Alex Smith: Better than advertised?
Smith Article from PhiladelphiaEagles.com
Smith: This Is A Big Year For MeI don't know about you guys but after reading that article I'm pretty excited about Smith. Six different quarterbacks in just 4 seasons? That explains why he has not met his potential. The guy was a third round pick so we know he is talented. To tell you the truth, i was never big on Brent Celek(sorry Whodie, JIBTA i know you agree with me). I always thought he was a good second tight end, not a starter in a Superbowl contending team. You never know, he might prove me wrong and continue his run from the playoffs last year to have a monster season. I doubt it, he showed nothing in the preseason. He is still nursing a sprained shoulder; If Smith starts and excels versus Carolina i would keep him as the starter.

Tight end Alex Smith has caught 129 passes for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns in his four NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As good as those numbers have been, the former third-round pick believes that he hasn't "met his potential." The 6-4, 258-pound Smith signed a one-year deal with the Eagles on Tuesday. The Eagles released tight end Tony Curtis to make room for Smith on the roster.
"I would say (my career is) a work in progress," said Smith, a 2005 draft choice out of Stanford. "By no means do I feel like I've met my potential. I don't ever like to make excuses for why that is. Every year I continue to try and get better. This is a very big year for me. I've been blessed to have this opportunity. I think I can take full advantage."
TE Alex Smith One of the reasons for that is the Eagles' stability at quarterback. Donovan McNabb has been the starter since the end of the 1999 season. In Tampa Bay, Smith worked with six different starting quarterbacks.
"To have that constant rotation and never having chemistry with a quarterback, it speaks volumes when you don't have that chemistry, when you guys aren't always on the same page," Smith said.
Smith's tenure in Tampa Bay ended when he was traded in April to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round pick in 2010. It was around that time when, Smith said, that he had his ankle scoped. The Patriots had a bevy of tight ends in their training camp and Smith was released in the final roster cutdown. Smith acknowledged that he didn't feel completely healthy from the ankle surgery until there were two weeks left in training camp.
"I might have been a little behind the 8-ball just trying to catch up to the guys and get a hold of that offense," Smith said. "I have no ill feelings. For whatever reason, it didn't work out as planned. They've moved on in their direction and now I'm here with the Eagles."
The Eagles have two tight ends on the roster in Smith and starter Brent Celek. A third tight end, Rob Myers, is on the team's practice squad. Even though Smith wasn't in camp with the Eagles, his familiarity with the West Coast offense from his time in Tampa Bay should make his transition a smooth one.
"(Coach Andy Reid) doesn't see any problems throwing me in the mix and getting things done," Smith said.
If Smith's reputation has been altered by moving on to his third team in such a short amount of time, he is confident that it can be reversed very quickly.
"I think it's just more important for me to just get out there and play," Smith said. "I think the rest will take care of itself. Once I'm back out there making plays, everything from the last six months will be forgotten."
Here are some info on Smith.
Adam Caplan for Scout NFL had this to say...
As a rookie in 2005, Smith finished second on the team with a career-high 41 receptions for 367 yards (9.0 avg.) and two touchdowns while playing in all 16 games with 10 starts. His 41 receptions led all NFL rookie tight ends that season and ranked third among all league rookies, while standing as the highest reception total by a Tampa Bay tight end in 10 years. As a blocker in 2005, Smith helped open holes for running back Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, who had six 100-yard games and won the NFL Rookie of the Year award.
Via USA Today, Smith was the 3rd highest ranked tight end in the 2005 draft behind Heath Miller and Matt Jones(he is a converted WR).
With Utah's quarterback in the mix to be chosen No. 1 overall, Stanford's three-year starter is "the other Alex Smith" in the draft. But Smith has made his own name. With 52 catches in 2004, he became the first tight end to lead the Cardinal in receiving since Bob Moore in 1969. Until last season, Stanford hadn't had a first-team all-Pacific-10 pick at tight end since Greg Baty in 1985. ...
| Heath Miller | Virginia | 6-5 | 256 | Soft hands but lacks burst for deep seams |
| Matt Jones(QB,TE,WR, Freakish athlete) | Arkansas | 6-5 | 239 | Stud athlete has an erratic arm for a quarterback |
| Alex Smith | Stanford | 6-4 | 258 | Gets quick jump for precise, polished routes |
From Patriots.com...
CollegePlayed four seasons at Stanford (2001-04) after redshirting in 2000 ... Was a three-year starter who was considered to be the premier tight end among college football's seniors in 2004 ... Awards included 2004 runner-up for the Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end ... Became the first Stanford tight end to be named First-Team All-Pac-10 since Greg Baty in 1985 and the first tight end to lead the team in receiving since Bob Moore in 1969 ... 2004 second-team consensus All-American, 2004 Team MVP, 2003 Honorable mention All-Pac-10, 2003 Honorable mention academic All-Pac-10 and 2002 Academic All-Pac-10 ... Played in 44 contests with 32 starts ... Finished his career with 107 receptions for 1,291 yards and eight touchdowns.
Wait, didn't somebody make a post like this for Tony Curtis? Gee...wonder what happened soon after. lol
I hope that wont be the case for Alex Smith. Smith averages 30+ catches a season, Curtis averages 3.7

Dude, I’ve been watching Gresham. Dude’s a serious player. I’m so happy that he got hurt because it means he’ll drop out of the first where we definitely wouldn’t have been able to take him. Imagine an Ingram Gresham TE corps… dude
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.
ok iron hank
do u agree .. gresham is better than celek .. thats my point

Gresham has the POTENTIAL to be better than Celek.
Completely different than actually being better than Celek. Gresham is a fuckin beast and it would be absolutely insane if we could pick him up. I agree he could become a huge upgrade over Celek but he could also be a huge bust.

One more thing guys...
I seriously think Kevin Curtis ordered delivery last night from where i work at Cafe Spice in Old City. I looked at the order and it said Kevin Curtis, address was somewhere around N 2nd st, and guess where his billing address was? Someplace in Utah. He is born in Murray, Utah and went to Utah State. I asked the delivery guy if he was white, 6 ft, slim/atheletic looking and he said yes. I have his phone number at work, I’m gonna call him to confirm. I swear I’m not making this up.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
A year ago i delivered food part time and ive delivered food to akers and mitch williams a couple of times.
hahah
dude ill top that.. i work at applebees and akers came in to eat with his family .. and i was like o shit david akers .. yea a kickers not that exciting but still .. my boy works at pf changs and he said dawk freddie mitchell and donavon came in there a few times .. all i got was a kicker

yea? well...
Now i got the address, phone number, and credit card number of Kevin Curtis! Top that!
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
A Kicker?! I may be a little bias because I’m a big Akers fan – even though he’s “just” a kicker – but he has the most career/season points for the Eagles, has the longest kick for the Eagles, and is a pro bowl performer. We gotta give credit where credit is due because too many times do we win games by just field goals and Akers has been a big part of those wins. There is a lot of pressure on a kicker and I would of been exstatic if I got to wait on him or see him like that.

I met Westbrook once at a Bonefish Grill in Deptford, NJ. My aunt who works there knows I’m a huge Eagles fan, so she called me as soon as she saw him walk in. Got his autograph, so it was worth the trip.
Other than that, my cousin delivers pizza to Jimmy Rollins’ house all the time.

Didn’t we have another TE Smith who never seemed to “meet his potential?” I hope this isn’t this case with #82 this time around…
+1 I’m not taking the bait on this deja vue.

32 catches, 385 yards, 3 TD
That was Alex Smith’s best season in the NFL. I think we can consider him an OK backup, but I’d take Celek as my starter in a heartbeat over Smith.
Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(
Uhh....
“The guy was a third round pick so we know he is talented”
In other words, he’s as talented as Ryan Moats, Matt McCoy, Tony Hunt, and Bryan Smith.
except those guys have not been starters for long.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
Ingram was that guy.
Maybe now we can get Gresham, too.
PRETTY EXCITED.......
I dont know but ive always thought Alex Smith was a good player, and that was on a shitty Tampa Bay team that changed QBs every other week. Imagine when him and donavan get their chemistry down. I think hes way better then celek and he will be the starter eventually
Wow
Didn’t hear that coming from you lol. I thought you loved Celek GB09. Real talk though, I like this move. Whether he’s better or worse than Celek, he is in the same realm or even if he is better than Celek I can trust when he comes off the field that the offense shouldn’t miss a beat with either of the two on the field.
HAHA YEAH...........
ILL admit it, im a little bit of a flip-flopper, but then again who isnt? I do think celek is good but i think Smiths athletism and speed MIGHT ( hence the word MIGHT) give him the slight edge over celek. who knows, im actually really not that concerned with the TE position. Ya kno wat i mean dude, i dont think celek or smith is gonna be the difference of us winning a SB or getting there.
Anyway great game tonite in PITT huh???? i had Santonio Holmes on my fantasy team , he got me like 30 points 2nite so im suped about that. Plus i cant fukin wait for sunday, but i live like 5 mins. from Giants stadium and i might have to go to the bar to watch the eagle game and deal with all the doushbagg giant fans . hahaha peace bro

For a sh*tty TB team
Antonio Bryant managed to catch a few passes. I’m not saying this dude’s a bust, but he’s not all that great. He’s got physical abilities, but just can’t seem to put them all together. I guess all he needs to be is a solid backup; that’s fine.
One of my main concerns is that he doesn’t seem to be able to help us out as a blocker.
Plus, if he’s a decent receiver, for God’s sake cut some of the WRs
As a rookie in 2005, Smith finished second on the team with a career-high 41 receptions for 367 yards (9.0 avg.) and two touchdowns while playing in all 16 games with 10 starts. His 41 receptions led all NFL rookie tight ends that season and ranked third among all league rookies, while standing as the highest reception total by a Tampa Bay tight end in 10 years. As a blocker in 2005, Smith helped open holes for running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, who had six 100-yard games and won the NFL Rookie of the Year award.
He led all tight ends in the 2005 Combine with 28 reps at the bench press beating notables Bo Scaife and Heath Miller.
In other words, he can catch and block.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
Jusy sayin.........
i dont think celek is that great of a blocker either

Well, Celek's the starter like it or not
They’re going to have to gradually acclimate Alex Smith, basically one package at a time. It may take all season for him to get the whole offense, in my humble opinion.
Route 36
The TB press release saying he helped “open holes” (while pumping up stats from 4 years ago) isn’t too convincing. I’m sure the Bucs would be saying Celek helped open holes for Westbrook (if they had signed him), and we all know that’s marginally true.
I’m more inclined to believe this review of his blocking.

That's not a TB press release.
That’s Adam Caplan from Scout NFL.
Sorry, not an insider. What does it say?

o jeez
im not saying smith is good .. im saying celek is a back up.. so our te position is still pretty shitty .. ingram would of started but hes hurt .. pray for gresham …i still wish we took pettigrew
by jack is better than asante on Sep 9, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions
gresham
We’ll have Ingram back, and you want us to draft another injured TE that didn’t play his senior season?….Andy isn’t that insane. They’re not gonna go offense first unless its the line, defense is gonna get more picks next year.
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."
by greenbean#twoOH on Sep 9, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions
They won’t have to go “offense first.” Gresham had season-ending surgery. He’ll drop to the 3rd probably.
And we don’t know how Ingram will be when he comes back. Gresham is bigger and the guy is absolutely a player. Scored a touchdown with one shoe on in a game I saw.
And JIBTA, Pettigrew was a scrub. He’s too slow. We never needed him.
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.
lol
yea but i would rather have pettigrew .. monster blocker .. good pass catching te .. a better bubba franks .. i would take a good te over maclin only because we have soo many wrs ..and pettigrew would of started rite away and helped
by jack is better than asante on Sep 9, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s slower than Celek. (Celek ran a 4.75, Pettigrew 4.83)
Yeah, he’s tall and stuff, but the lack of anything that resembles speed and the fact that he’s already a pretty good blocker means he really might be best suited to doing exactly what he does. The thing is a pure blocking TE has no place in the Eagles system. If he can’t get separation on routes, what’s the point?
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.
joke
pettigrew is a better bubba franks .. celek is a back up .. no question .. pettigrew is legit

Greshams a senior and he’ll come out and fall just like Ingram did but maybe not as far because of the injury.
