Eagles re-work Jason Babin's contract
Those who wanted their Babinback ribs will be happy to hear this...
The Eagles announced Friday evening that they have re-signed defensive end Jason Babin to a contract with a set of new terms. Babin was originally signed by the Eagles on Aug. 4, and played in all four preseason games this summer, recording 14 tackles and three sacks.
Babin earned himself a spot on this roster the old fashioned way, he went out and performed in the preseason. He did everything he was asked, was arguably the Eagles' best defensive lineman in the preseason, and was justly awarded with a new deal and a spot on the 53 man roster.

Position switch
Babin plays on the same side as Trent Cole. How much success do DEs usually have switching sides? Could he eventually start on the other side?

I don’t suspect he’ll switch sides. In the Eagles D Line rotation, the only guy that almost never comes off the field is Trent Cole. Cole is a high motor guy with a ton of energy and has the capability of always staying on the field, but I think that maybe one other reason we never saw Trent get a breather was because there wasn’t anyone ready to step in. Maybe Babin is that guy to give Cole a few plays off here and there.

Ever wary of the salary cap...
Since Babin was just signed as a ‘camp body’ they did not apply their normal ‘incentives’ to try to stash cap room if any becomes available, like they did with Klecko and Akeem Jordan after they resigned him from the practice squad.
I actually would not mind having Babin take some third downs away from Trent. He could use a few plays off each game.

Of all the newcomers this preseason, I think Babin earned his contract extension the most. I love this guy’s attitude and the way he played his heart out during each preseason game. He should fit in very well with our D-line. Congrats, Babin, welcome to Philly!

Glass Half Empty
Okay, so let’s just play devil’s advocate to be fair. Is this another Jerome McDougle situation? Is this guy just a training camp darling? I’m worried that he is, but if you can make me think otherwise, I’d appreciate it. For example, did he get sacks against first team players, or was it against scrubs? (I’m abroad right now and haven’t been able to watch any games so I really don’t know).
That being said, if he does turn into a great DE, imagine how pissed the Texans, Seahawks and Chiefs would be…I wouldn’t blame them either.

I saw some true talent there, ajay. I’d think it’s fair to say he was pretty dominant during the preseason, regardless of who he played against.
Maybe he just wasn’t a good fit in the Texans’ 3-4 scheme. He played DE in college, and they moved him to OLB in Houston. That of course doesn’t explain his complete lack of production in Seattle and KC the last 2 years, but I digress.
The bottom line here is that he’s probably not going to be expected to do very much. He’ll be playing behind our best player on defense (in my opinion), and if he makes some plays here and there when he gets his chances, fantastic. If not, we’re no worse off than we were last year at that position.
Otherwise, it’s a guy that clearly gives a ton of effort, and I’m sure they’ll utilize him effectively on kick and punt coverage.

Thanks man
Like I said, I can unfortunately only go by what is written and some minimal game highlights. I heard that no matter what he seemed to always be in the backfield. Would you say that’s the case?
As for where he fits in, like you said, he seems to be a good reserve. So if he chips in a few sacks and gives Trent some rest, I’ll be happy. Of course getting 10 sacks wouldn’t hurt either…

If he’s strictly 3rd and long fodder, I’m absolutely fine with that. Trent is a great DE and all but there are better pure pass rushers out there, and I think that’s what we got in Babin and Clemmons. That’s when I think we’ll see most of their playing time.

Take these preseason stats for what they're worth, but...
14 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles. He was very much consistently finding his way into the backfield.

Good point
And the photo of him taking down Manning is gold.

Cole at DT on 3rd and long?
Clemons at LDE
Howard at LDT
Cole at RDT
Babin at RDE
I think it’s worth a look.

Hell, if we’re gonna do that why not just run a 3-4 D on passing downs, Gocong as the other OLB
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.
