Something important to know regarding Kolb

There's a million fanposts about Kevin Kolb right now, and instead of posting this in every one of those topics, I thought it deserved a fanpost of its own.

The Eagles don't have to decide if they want to re-sign him or trade him this year. Yes, next year is his fourth year, and normally he would become an unrestricted free agent, but when the owners opted out of the collective bargaining agreement, all that changed. Players at the end of the 2010 season will need 6 years in the league to be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent, and Kolb will not qualify. This means we can tender him as a restricted free agent, all but guaranteeing his Eagledom.

This is, of course, assuming there is no new collective bargaining agreement in place before the 2010 offseason. However, most people get the feeling the two sides will NOT be able to come to terms before 2010 because of the lack of the sense of urgency.

This isn't to say the Eagles won't make a decision before then, but Kolb would be a maniac to extend right now, and I just can't see the Eagles fully committing to Kolb unless the wheels completely fall off our boy, #5, Donovan McNabb.

That being said, the Eagles have to be happy right now. They have two quarterback with which they are comfortable playing, and that's never a bad thing. They will not walk away empty-handed when they decide which quarterback will depart.

What do I think will happen though? Honestly, I think if McNabb plays well enough, and there's no reason to think he won't, they keep him and trade Kolb for a couple of draft picks (maybe a low first and third). McNabb's only 32 and he could very well have another 4-5 years in the tank, which is plenty of time to develop another quarterback the same way we groomed Kolb. It's all too early to speculate now, but that's how I think things will shake out.

*edit: Players need 6 accrued seasons in order to become an unrestricted free agent. I could've sworn I read somewhere it was 5 years in 2010 and 6 in 2011 but everything I looked at today says 6 seasons, so we'll go with that because I'm sure that's right and my memory sucks.

Well....

All my earlier posts this week about deciding which QB to keep after next year are all shot to hell.

Yup. I’m the dumba$$

Good info, dude. Yeah, this basically buys the Eagles all of 2010, too to waffle on their QB situation.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

NO WAY.............

Will the birds trade Kolb. But good read 4 the most part. Andy Reid as we all know is 2 stubborn to give up or give away players he chooses. And he actually looks like a genius now drafting Kolb after JRussell and Brady Quinn. I would have to say that as of right now Kolb is light years ahead of those guys. You dont have 2 be a rocket scientist to know that Donavan probably wont be back once this contract is up, so unless the birds are blown away by a offer for Kolb i dont think there is any chance he goes anywhere. If anything the more logical thing 2 do would be 2 let Vick play a little and get his stock back up, this way we could trade him for a 2or 3 and draft a new RT because the future does not look 2 good for Shawn Andrews and possibly Stacy either.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

My theory on Kolb...

is that he’s a great QB out of shotgun, and Andy has adjusted to his abilities out of it. I don’t think he’s all that great undercenter. I wanna see the stats of him in shotgun vs. undercenter. I guess Kolb feels out of shotgun he gets a better view of the coverage the D is in than he would undercenter, and quite frankly, I think this could very well be true. Therefore he is probably much more confident in shotgun than undercenter. Didn’t he run exclusively shotgun in college, almost like a “passing wildcat” if you know what I mean?

by eaglemaniac814 on Sep 30, 2009 7:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so?

If we have to put him in shotgun every play, of every game, and he continues to put up numbers like he has been, I fail to see where this is a problem.

by cybercybe on Sep 30, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was just saying...

that if he were to be traded to a team that uses little to no shotgun, he would be a mediocre QB at best. I think that’s what the Marty/Andy combo was doing, making him dropback, something he’s probably not comfortable doing. I also fail to see this as a problem. I actually like a spread, shotgun offense better than a basic, west coast offense.

what the eagles liked about kolb is the fact that at houston his coaches made him get comfortable with pro style offenses

I have no problem with him playing outta the

shotgun every play… but I though he did OK undercenter though.

You can’t run an NFL team and win a title out of the shot gun every play unless your QB is Peyton Manning

why couldnt Kolb do that?

Except Peyton Manning was pretty darn good in college…I think even the most optimistic Kolb fan (Mcnabb hater?) would call that a pipe dream beyond pipe dreams.

He has held his own against mediocre defenses – I wouldn’t put him in canton just yet

Trade?

Kolb’s a work in progress, but he’s doing quite well. And that’s cool. But think about this; Tim Tebow.

Now, looking at the work Kolb’s done, and the way the Eagles are playing under McNabb (33-14), I think we’ll get a high 20s draft pick, at least. If not better.

What if we traded our first round draft pick and Kolb for a high pick (we could always add a Kevin Curtis or someone else here if needed) ? And grab Tim Tebow?

DeSean Jackson for 1000 yards this year!

I've said this on the other post...

The only way that would be great trading Kolb is for a 1st rounder and drafting Case Keenum out of ironically University of Houston. Mark my words…this kid is the best QB in college ball. He was overlooked last year because of his conference but is in running for the Heisman this year after beating OK State and Texas Tech. Led nation in total offense last year. This way Mcnabb can finish out his contract and (fingers crossed)Keenum will be ready to start in 2011-12 for the Eagles.

Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.

I disagree with the top QB bit...

but other than that. Good thinking. The top QB’s in college football are Tony Pike and Colt McCoy in that order. I would love to have another Cincy guy (Brent Celek and Trent Cole) in Pike and McCoy is just plain great.

heres a question

if kolb starts against the bucs and does well … would you look at trading him now ? and maybe keeping vick to groom in to our offense ? we could wind up in a situation next year trying to trade him when teams know we have to get rid of one qb … i say we take out shot now while is stock is drastically rising … look what it did for the pats

I don’t really think there’s a such thing as player stock. While the Eagles could possibly get something of value in return for Kolb, he is already of tremendous value to the Eagles. He’s cheap, he’s good, he’s rolling with the punches, he knows our offense, and he’s pretty much stuck here as long as the Eagles want him.

I don’t think he’ll get the chance to start against the Bucs. Why bother? He can’t really display anything he hasn’t already, except for maintaining a level of play consistently. All that could really happen from the Eagles starting him would be to mess up something good. Right now, given the limited sample, I think his stock is about as high as it can get as trade bait.

Regardless, I wouldn’t trade him this year at all. Moving him would be a postseason move. I would not want to go into a game with Michael Vick as our backup QB. We’re incredibly fortunate to have all our quarterbacks, let’s keep them happy, healthy, and here.

Either way, I think we draft a QB next year.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Oct 1, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

to clarify:

We move Vick no matter what. I think this was the goal from the beginning. His contract was set up brilliantly so that in year 2, he’s a cheap starting QB, but too expensive to be a backup. Someone will want him, and someone will give up a draft pick for him. I believe we get at least a 3rd round pick for him (unless Vick plays terribly, and I mean terribly), but it could be a much better pick than that.

By the end of next year, maybe even before next year starts, we’re definitely going to have a decision on McNabb/Kolb. Now that Kolb has had a taste, he’s just going to want to be on the field every week, and there’s likely someone out there willing to pay a nice ransom for his services (as stated by many before, the Rams would be a great fit).

On the other hand, McNabb would have good value in a trade, too. The reality of this is that McNabb is getting older, and while his skills may not be on a decline yet, Andy Reid might not want to take the chance. It would be an incredibly difficult decision to make (emotionally, financially, would our team actually be better with Kolb starting), but he MIGHT decide to go with Kolb, and if he does, then McNabb would get traded.

At the same time, it’s a great thing and it’s a very difficult situation for Andy Reid. This will eventually work itself out, and I don’t think he can make a wrong decision, but no matter what he does, some fans will be upset. I definitely think we’re in for a dramatic offseason.

So, like I said earlier, I think with McNabb being only 32, and with the history he and Reid have, McNabb is the guy for another two to three years. I think we draft a QB and keep Kolb as the backup for one more year unless we’re blown away with an offer, in which case we sign Garcia or somebody as a backup and groom the drafted QB in 2010.

In 2011, if we weren’t blown away by an offer and didn’t trade Kolb, Andy Reid decides whether to re-sign McNabb or not. The drafted QB, now in his second year, becomes our backup to whichever QB we decided to go with. If we re-sign McNabb, we re-sign Kolb and trade him.

It would be unrealistic to keep Kolb on the bench without going insane any longer than next year. Romo and Rodgers each sat patiently for three years, but even that’s pushing it. I don’t know if we’ll be forced to make a decision before then or not. I hope not, because our backup QB situation becomes a problem next year if we get rid of McNabb or Kolb, but then again, it’s something I’m sure Andy Reid can handle.

If McNabb were 35 RIGHT NOW, I think we’d have a different story on our hands, but this is just how I see it. Obviously, this is all speculation on my part, and it’s really pretty pointless because it’s assuming no injuries to McNabb or Kolb and that everything just goes swimmingly well. Of course, real life isn’t that way, and there’s too many variables to make a definite assessment, I just see this as the most likely outcome.

Vick's 2nd Year...

is a team option at 5.2M. That means they would have to sign him then trade him, which would defeat the purpose. He is signed for 1 year with a 2nd year option. Not signed for two years.

by TwoTonsOfIrony on Oct 5, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

how does that defeat the purpose?

we resign him to the 2nd year team option, and then trade him to another team which takes that contract or, more likely, signs him to a new contract

Draft Picks

I am of the mind that they should trade him as well a la Matt Cassell of last year. However, you suggest a 1st and a 3rd for him whereas the Patriots only managed a 2nd rounder for both Cassell and Vrabel. And Cassell showed an entire season vs Kolb showing 2-3 games this season. I don’t know that he would get that much on the open market.

by TwoTonsOfIrony on Oct 5, 2009 12:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I remember there being something fishy about the Cassel trade. Conspiracy theorists believe McDaniels in Denver was supposedly offering a first round pick, but supposedly Pioli and Belichick had an agreement in place before Pioli was even actually general manager in KC. It kind of blew over though after the whole Cutler thing went down.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Oct 5, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

(and everyone thought Cassel would be worth at least a 1st round pick)

Worth is all relative. The Rams would know exactly what they are getting in Kolb, with Spags playing against Kolb in practice for a year and with Whipple coaching him for two years, and the demo they received this year. I think he may definitely be worth that much to a Rams team that might NEED a QB and not want to draft one and develop one that might be such a perfect fit.

no, dont want him at all

no harris

he leaves too much air under the ball, has a hard time reading defenses, cant handle the blitz/pocket breakdown, and has stared down a receiver or two in his day

this is his first year starting (not counting the bowl game last year) and is a good leader, but unless he really improves the next year or two i dont want him
