Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Where each team stands right now

Keep AJ!

My Stance: Trade Kolb, Keep Feeley.

We just "locked down" McNabb with a nice off-season contract upgrade.  That pretty much cements him as our #1 for both 2009 and 2010.   But who's to say that he wont stay longer?   Barring 2 superbowl victories in the next 2 years, i dont see McNabb not continuing to play, and i dont see the Eagles giving him the "Brett Favre" Treatment either.  Players (especially quarterbacks) are playing longer these days.  Improved treatments, and conditioning can keep a QB playing into his late 30's.  With McNabbs drive, i can easily see him hanging around.

But let's just say that i am wrong.   Lets say that McNabb does retire/move on after the 2010 season.  At that time, we'll have Vick and Kolb as our options to be the #1.  I know that Vick is a project right now, but lets just say that this gamble does work out for us.  Andy is continuing to pound into our heads that Vick was brought here to be a QB, so lets assume that he regains his previous form, and then improves under McNabbs mentoring.  Would anyone in their right mind be arguing to start Kolb over Vick for the 2011 season?  Pretty doubtful.    Vick has a cannon of an arm, and if he has even 60% of the natural athletic ability that he once showed us then the guy will still be a defensive nightmare.  (But with weapons this time.)   As good as Vick once was, he never displayed any work ethic.  With good coaching, a great mentor and a sense of needing to "redeem" himself, i just cant see this guy not assuming the #2 QB spot within the first month or so of the season.

So where does that leave Kevin Kolb??   Still riding the pine and waiting for his opportunity through 2011?  Through 2012?   When will enough be enough?  How long can the Eagles really think that they are continuing to groom this guy for a starting position?

The fact is, we are stacked at QB.

The problem is that we have 3 guys who want the starting position within a reasonable timeframe, and 1 guy who knows the system and is prefectly content being the backup.

Between Kolb and Feeley going onto the trading block, i see Kolb being the one who can get us the most in return.  Sure AJ is still good trade bait, but with Kolb young age and a lot of potential, i think that he'll yield us a better return.

Trade Kolb, keep Feeley, and then draft a QB in 10, or 11 when AJ calls it a day.  Start grooming someone else.   Kolb was drafted at a time when we didnt need a QB on this roster and now we just need to acknowledge the mistake and let him move on...

Dont be confused.....I do like Kevin Kolb.   I just dont think that he fits on this team anymore.

THANK YOU

I completely agree. We need to start a petition. I would much rather have AJ on the team then Kolb. I don’t see him ever being a starter for us, and if and when that day comes there will be some ugly eagles fans out there disappointed once the season is over. No disrespect to him cause he could quite possibly be an amazing quarterback with some time but I don’t want to wait and find out. He needs to be traded.

Respectfully disagree...

Here’s the bottom line… We (as fans) don’t know what we have (or don’t have) in Kevin Kolb. We don’t. And I’m not ready to part ways with a former high 2nd round pick that we’ve been grooming for 3 years and the coaching staff seems to love in favor of a dime-a-dozen career backup, just so that I can get a slightly better draft pick in return.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

My question is…
Would we really want to keep a guy who is content with being a third stringer on the team, who never pushes to improve, or have 3 guys who all want to start and increase thier level of play and competition in eachother.

I want the best players on our squad, unless, the price is right.

thats a good point...

But, my question still remains. WHEN does Kolb take over on this team? 2011? 2012? We’re going to have a guy being groomed for 4-7 years before ever giving him the opportunity to start. Can we agree that drafting a QB at that time was more than unnecessary?

by GreenInBaltimore on Sep 3, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Unnecessary, maybe, it still happened though and the game changes everyday.
Let’s watch tonight and see what Kolb can do. 2 full quarters. Sure it’s second string but still. I really want him to succeed, no matter where he goes. He has been more accountable for the way he plays and fired up than a lot of other players, McNabb included. I like that.

It’s not like either is going to start for the team in any situation other than emergency. I guarantee you the Eagles will be scouting Kolb’s replacement for the 2010 NFL draft. They’ll be giving Dan LeFevour a good look. And don’t be surprised if McNabb is actually on board with it this time.

were talking about our 3rd string QB

we need to understand how lucky the eagles are to have 4 QBs right now that are as good as they are. I have not been impressed with Kolb and my first thought was to trade him and keep Feeley, but after thinking about it, it doesnt make sense.

Kolb is younger, motivated, and wants to be a starter eventually. Feeley has been absolutely content with being a #3, now a #4 after his failed stint in Miami as a starter. We know what we have in Feeley, but we dont know the ceiling for Kolb yet and he is still motivated.

Its sad to see ya go AJ, but its for the best

HA!!!

Yeah he sure was motivated in ‘08 when he went in for a benched McNabb. Let’s all face facts we have a solid “team” player in Feeley. I think that trading Kolb would help the team and get them in a better position to win a SB ring…

So ur gonna judge a young QB on his first 2 full quarters in a real game

against the number 2 defense in the league? thats pretty fair. Guess you would have traded Elway, Favre, and really any other good/great QB then. I like Feeley a lot. I tried to buy his jersey in 2002 but they were sold out. Kolb has more potential right now and if McNabb were to go down week 1 (knock on wood) Id rather have Kolb starting (ignoring the whole Mike Vick for now, he wouldnt be ready to be a starter by week 3 so lets not even get into that one)

Exactly

It’s ridiculous how people judge him off of that game. He was thrown into a game replacing the benched starter, in a game where we were getting shelled, where one of the best defenses in the game KNEW that we had to pass the ball, and you’re judging him off of that? Really? I don’t know of a QB who would’ve succeeded in that kind of position in their first real NFL action.

No

I just watched him throw this SWEET pick to a Jet defender. It is his arm strength that I have a problem with.

by Cowboy KILLER on Sep 3, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

that's pretty crazy

according to NFL.com, he didn’t throw a pick….

8/16 (meh) for 110 yards (not bad) and a TD. I thought he looked pretty decent

Kolb all the way once McNabb's done.

If we keep vick he will continue in the role of just playing 10-15 snaps, which is good for him.

Believe it or not Kolb has done well during this preseason, if McNabb goes down, retires, etc.. Kolb is the man, Vick is the backup/“spelling” QB/Wildcat QB… nothing more really.

What you all forget is that this offense is pass happy, we pass more than we run. Vick isnt exactly the greatest passer, sure he has a cannon arm but where is the accuracy? I can see some of that getting better but once he gets comfortable where he is at he will only look to run the ball and be a ball hog.. Kolb has the intangables to excel in this offense…

And vick had weapons: Roddy White, Warrick Dunn, Joe Horn(breifly) and Crumpler along with a ton of other decent recievers, he just didnt pass to them.
