The Rise Of Brent Celek

Brent CelekWhen the Philadelphia Eagles selected Brent Celek in the 5th round, they were not expecting him to evolve into a top tier NFL Tight End. Just like the rest of us, the Eagles figured Celek could compete for a roster spot behind then-starting TE L.J. Smith. But what none of us expected, at least not so soon, was the emergence of Brent Celek (pictured) in the Eagles’ offensive schemes. After L.J. Smith received word that he would be released, and eventually signed with the Baltimore Ravens, Celek took the opportunity that was placed in front of him, and grasped it with open arms.

Star-divide

The former Cincinnati Bearcat has had an eventful career leading up to what he is today. As a backup to L.J. Smith in previous seasons, Celek never received many opportunities to shine on Sundays. But in the 2008 playoffs, he made a name for himself. He finished the playoff run, which was cut off by the Arizona Cardinals, with 19 receptions, placing him third on the All-Time receptions list for a Tight End in the playoffs. This is where a star was born.

With all the postseason success for Celek in 2008, the off-season in 2009 gave Celek the opportunity of a lifetime, the chance to become a starting Tight End in the NFL. His hard work, perseverance, and mental toughness has gotten him to where he is now: an elite Tight End.

As of this very moment, Celek is leading in many statistical categories. Here are the following categories that Celek is listed under…

 • Leads all Tight Ends in receptions (22), 2nd is Jason Witten (19)
 • Leads NFC Tight Ends in yardage (245), 2nd is Chris Cooley (189)
 • Leads NFC Tight Ends in yards per game (81.7), 2nd is Chris Cooley (63.0)
 • Tied for NFL lead in touchdowns (2), 10 others tied with two
 • Tied for NFL lead in receptions resulting in a first down (12), 2nd is Antonio Gates (12)

As you can see, Brent Celek is quickly going from the mid tier for Tight Ends, to elite tier for Tight Ends. The NFC East undoubtedly has the best group of Tight Ends, with Jason Witten, Chris Cooley, Kevin Boss, and Brent Celek all being go-to-guy’s for their respectable teams. One thing that may have helped Celek was the injury to Donovan McNabb. As strange as this may sound, Kevin Kolb has helped Celek out more than expected. Kolb has targeted Celek more than any other player on the team, and has gone to him in crucial situations. In the last two games, Celek has gone over the century mark for yardage, and with McNabb most likely returning following the Bye Week, it will be interesting to see how Celek performs during the next part of the season.

Even though its early in the season i’m surprised at all the categories hes leading. Hope he keeps it up and we get him into the pro bowl!

Same here..

At the rate he’s going right now… he’ll be in the pro bowl with ease, hopefully this isn’t just a spurt and his great performance continues. He reminds me alot of Witten with the way he runs and fights for every inch.

I wanted the eagles to draft celek

I thought that he could be that special player to get us to the top fast. He is a damn good weapon and if he keeps up the work he will be a 1st team all pro…

Celek doesnt remind me of 1 specific TE, he looks like Gonzo, witten, clark etc at different moments based on what’s needed, he’s different from the rest of them but still amazing…

I think Celek continues to be a big part of the offense when McNabb returns.

Actually

Celek is second in the NFL among receiving yards for a tight end ( 245, Dallas Clark has 284) and he is second in yards per game (81.7, Dallas Clark yet again leads 94.7). Still, Celek is a badass though.

Witten and Gonzalez are locks until they retire...

They either have to be hurt or they’d really have to fall off sharply not to get voted in. I know you’re a big Vernon Davis fan, and although he’s off to a nice start, he’s been a bust so far.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

He’s been a beast so far, I think he has come a long way physically and mentally. He knows he’s a beast now, when the ball is in his hands he knows he can drag those three defenders an extra yard and goes for it. It’s a major confidence thing that’s been talked about a lot recently regarding Celek, McCoy, Jackson and Kolb.

I hope to see this production continue, between him and Jackson we really have the potential to have 2 1000 yard recievers this year. I don’t think much will change when McNabb comes back, Celek is still an excellent safety valve.

ive been a fan since his first TD of his career.

the last game of the 2007 season against the Bills, just awesome.

He had that really clutch diving catch to move the sticks at the end of the 2007 game at Texas Stadium, preserving along with Westbrook’s famous kneel-down the Eagles’ ultimately meaningless but still very enjoyable 10-6 win over Dallas.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

3 games into the season folks.

He has played great and his ability to carry tacklers has been awesome. But we are 3 games into the season, let’s not get carried away with probowl talks (and try not to jinx it).

I just hope when McNabb comes back we still use Celek…. I don’t know about you guys but I wasn’t impressed at all by McNabb when he played against the Panthers

by Eaglesfan10 on Sep 30, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

Uhhhhhhhh

It’s not McNabb’s fault the defense gave the offense short fields to work with consistently.

In regards to your concern, I tend to remember McNabb going to Celek in last year’s playoff run. If Celek gets open, Donovan will find him. The criticism/doubt is unwarranted and silly.

not exactly QBs do tend to have there favorite receivers. You are right if he gets open Super 5 will get him the ball but it’s the close balls that he has to have comfort with him or he won’t throw it.

While I still am not a Kolb fan...

…I have to give it to Celek. He manned up out there and seized the tight end job by the balls. He is a good player.
