Let's Not Be Picky Now...
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Eagles worked out free agent Jeremiah Trotter on Thursday.
Right now this a good sign to improving the LB's. He was probably one of our best defensive players in this decade. Yeah we cut him two years because he was on the down side of his career. And he played reserve for the Tampa Bay Bucs last year. But hold on now. Before the end of the 08 season. The Bucs had a very good defense with talented LB's. Derrick Brooks, who Tampa Bay let go this season because he was on the downside of his career. We shouldn't complain about the Eagles working him out and signing him (maybe).
First, he's only 32, he can still (slightly) improve his fitness. There are guys older than him that still have impacts. Second, the average career in the NFL is 3.5 years. Anyone who lasts longer has accomplished a feet that wasn't a high draft pick. They have to be decent to play 10 years, which is how long he has played. Third, he has always been a play-maker in this defense. From 2001-06, just with the Eagles, he has had 415 tackles. Each one of those seasons he had over 100 tackles. From '98 he has had 11 sacks just with the Eagles, may not be that impressive. 6 FF and 9 INT's plus 2 TD's of turnovers. He is a beast. Fourth, our current LB's....
Chris Gocong (left), Omar Gaither (middle), and Akeem Jordan (right). This group is the worst on our Defense and probably we have had in while. Chis Gocong or Omar Gaither can't play the run, and Akeem Jordan is very inconsistent. In two games, Chirs Gocong- 5 tackles, 5 solo, 0.0 sacks, and 1 PDef. Sad. Omar Gaither- 9 tackles, 7 solo, 7 assists, 0.5 sacks, 0PDef. Akeem Jordan- 14 tackles, 12 solo, 2 assists, 1.0 sacks, 2 INT. Good, but the game play isn't as good as it sounds. 07 Trotter played 3 games and only started, 13 tackles, 9 solo, 4 assists, 0.0 sacks, 2PDef. A little less than Jordan, but Jordan started 2 games. Trotter can definitely contribute.
But I will agree, he is not the same "Axe". And he doesn't have to be. But he can have an impact like Denver is receiving from Brian Dawkins, leadership and tackles up the wazoo. Yeah he isnt very agile, but he can be situational. He can be on for 1-2 downs and put Gaither back on 3rd for coverage. We can be picky judging with what we already have, he is probably one of the greatest* Eagles ever.
*= he had a short but impact full career with the Eagles (Brian Dawkins is the greatest)

he has been out of the game for 2 years
with bad wheels and the eagles already let him go twice
the fact that the eagles are thinking about this scares me. we need linebackers who can cover the middle, and i seriously doubt the axe still has that speed. thanks for all the years in green (and the ones you effed the redskins over). i loved cheering for you and watching you play, but your career is in the past.

he didnt play in 08
made sure of that before positing bc i wasnt positive
the eagles are just looking at him because he played for the system longer than anyone else (like the garcia signing). i know the defense has changed since he left, but it would take him a shorter amount of time to understand the play calling and schemes than someone else

its cool, i had to make sure myself
but trying to bring in a guy that hasnt played in 2 years (because of retirement, not incarceration) during the season should bring up some red flags

If our knock on Gaither is that he doesnt like contact...
Then this guy fixes that problem. I hate how they always try this but for years JJ was putting in guys who could stuff the run on “running downs” and guys who were able to defend the pass on “passing downs”. Trotter may have lost some speed but does anyone question whether or not he can put up 80+ tackles on stopping the run?

whether or not he can put up 80+ tackles on stopping the run?
I question this vehemently … he had 13 tackles in 2007 and hasn’t played in the NFL since. No one else was willing to sign him? Zach Thomas can find a job but Trotter can’t … all the signs are pointing to him not being able to play at a high level.
Trotter is good in the run … our defense is good against the run we can’t seem to cover a Wide Receiver. If Trotter get’s signed it feels much to much like a knee jerk reaction to solve a problem that doesn’t really exist.

While we're at it
Let’s sign Troy Vincent and make him a Free Safety.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

I don't see any way we sign Trotter...
His game has serious deficiencies his last year here (and that was 3 years ago), he played 3 games in Tampa in 2007, got cut, sat out 2008, and put in no work during camp.
I think the Eagles made an attempt to light a fire under Shawn Andrews by working out Runyan, but had no real interest in ever signing him, and maybe we’re seeing them take the same lame approach here.
Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

ya know... the more i think about this...
Im actually starting to think that this will happen and im starting to like it.
Its obvious the eagles arent going to call on him to be the old trot, but this D does need leadership and this doesnt cost 9 million bucks.
I think they will pick him up, and while i dont think he plays very much, he can hopefulyl jumpstart this D

Wha?
I don’t think this is going to happen. They are just old buddies and Andy was probably like “Sure, come on down, we’ll give you a look.” The fact is this LB core is not that bad, still young and still developing, but they ARE probably the best group we have had in years, Albeit better with Bradley in there:
1) Gocong IS very good against the run and his Pass Defensed in the end-zone in game one attests that his ability to cover is improving. Do you not remember Dhani “Fall-down -on-every-play-and-take-out-two-of-my-teammate’s-also” Jones. Having him was like playing with 8 guys on D. Gocong is also going to show his skill as a pass rusher. Where he led the nation in college. You have to love that he is BIG and Fast. Granted he sucked week 2, but the whole team did and Shockey didn’t exactly tear it up, so..
2)Omar is a very vocal leader who was an absolute tackling machine in his year as a starter in the middle. 170 tackles. That is over 10/game. He is also way better that Trott was at coverage. Even when he was a back up, he was a “starting” nickel LB, so your assessment there doesn’t seem to be supported by the facts.
3) Akeem came out of nowhere to make this squad, push for time, won a job and is now developing into a solid play-maker.
When Trott was here last, teams would just pass on us if he was in the game and then run on us when he wasn’t. It became laughable that we had only situational LBs and is the very thing that precipitated over-hauling our LB core. It was a major blow to our depth and leadership and overall size when Bradley went out, but this group can and will get it done. I loved Trotter in his first stint here and was sad to see him go; glad when they brought him back and healed the rift. But if we are bringing him in, perhaps it is just to motivate an LB crew that knows there is no one behind them pushing for a starting role (Although Foukou could be before the end of the year), otherwise just bring him in as a cheerleader/mentor/motivator, ‘cause dude can’t run.

I still think
we’re overreacting about our LB’s. It’s only the second week. Calm down.
As for Trotter coming back, hey, bring him back. He’s an animal and can help us out, either as a situational LB or a special teams pro. Whatever.

um well
Chis Gocong or Omar Gaither can’t play the run, and Akeem Jordan is very inconsistent. In two games, Chirs Gocong- 5 tackles, 5 solo, 0.0 sacks, and 1 PDef. Sad. Omar Gaither- 9 tackles, 7 solo, 7 assists, 0.5 sacks, 0PDef. Akeem Jordan- 14 tackles, 12 solo, 2 assists, 1.0 sacks, 2 INT.
Omar and Gocong look like they can stop the run. I just think your being a bit to mellowdramatic about it. Gocong is prolly our best run player, Gaither is doing ok, and Akeem is doing very very well, they are the weak point on our Defense but not as big of one as your making it out to be.
and as much as I like trotter I dont think he has anything left in the tank and I will gladly eat my words if im wrong… meaning he comes here and has a monster year.
