Player by Player analysis

Here are two links from Philly.com going through player by player on both sides of the ball from the Saints game.  I suggest that you read both of these as they are pretty good but for those on limited time I will highlight them after the jump.

Offense

Defense

Star-divide

First the Offense.

Kevin Kolb - Have to start with him, right? Overall, he had good spots and bad spots, but exceeded expectations. Let's start with the good. When the game was still in hand, Kolb did a good job of taking care of the ball. Two INTs came in the final 1:16. He displayed good toughness in the pocket. On a third down in the second quarter, Kolb absorbed a blow from blitzing DB Randall Gay but still delivered a strike to Jason Avant for a first down. He did the same thing when DE Will Smith was in his face, finding LeSean McCoy. Kolb's 71-yard pass to DeSean Jackson on the Eagles' first drive was pretty. On the final drive of the first half, he made quick decisions and good throws to set up a field goal. Now on to the bad. Late in the second quarter, bad decision on the 14th play of the Eagles' drive. He was looking in Celek's direction and should have been picked off by Anthony Hargrove. That would have been a devastating turnover, but Hargrove couldn't hang on. Kolb struggled throwing the slant, once missing Brian Westbrook and once missing Jackson. For his first start in the NFL, Kolb played well. Andy Reid is right to give him the start next week if Donovan McNabb can't go.

I'm in the Kolb did well camp, where I know many are still skeptical and rightfully so.  Things could have been a lot worse and he didn't get much help, long fields and a deficet from the very start is tough for any QB.

Winston Justice - He was a major bright spot on an otherwise dim day. By my count, Justice got significantly less help than a week ago. In the second half, particularly, he was on his own, mostly lined up with Grant. In the run game, Justice looked powerful on the Eagles' second drive, moving Saints defensive lineman Bobby McCray out of the way on a 6-yard Westbrook run. He created space for a 4-yard Westbrook run in the third quarter and a 6-yard gain by McCoy in the fourth. Good recognition and execution in picking up a blitzing Scott Fujita on a second-quarter completion to Jeremy Maclin. Even more encouraged by Justice than I was last week.

There were a lot of people worried about Justice but I for one think he has done a pretty darn good job.  The Saints brought pressure and Justice was up to the challenge.  I still think he needs help with his run blocking but we'll see.

Brent Celek - Maybe someone on the Saints' defense made fun of him as a kid or stole his girlfriend in high school because Celek was playing like a man possessed. As a receiver, Celek caught eight balls for 104 yards. On 2nd-and-6 in the second quarter, he caught a pass from Kolb at the line of scrimmage, met Saints CB Jabari Greer 2 yards short of the first down and just battled his way to the marker. On 3rd-and-7 in the second quarter, he did the same thing, but this time to linebacker Scott Shanle (6-2, 245). Reid patted him on the backside after the play, and a pumped up Celek seemed unsure of what to do. He ended up delivering a rather tame first-down signal. Celek also did a better job as a blocker, specifically on a couple Wildcat runs by Westbrook and Jackson.

Haha I had to put this up everyone knows about my man crush on Celek.

Now on to the Defense:

Asante Samuel - A day to forget for Samuel. On TV, it was tough to tell what kind of defense the Eagles were in when Drew Brees hit Marques Colston on the opening touchdown, but he was the closest man to the Saints' WR. It looked like he thought he had safety help from Quintin Mikell. Samuel had a chance to bring down Reggie Bush for a loss on 2nd-and-1 in the first quarter but was the recipient of a stiff-arm. He was matched up one-on-one with Devery Henderson on a 3rd-and-12 in the second quarter and was nowhere near the receiver, who picked up 17 yards. Samuel also gave a big cushion to Colston on a 13-yard gain in the third quarter. If you re-watch the game, you'll notice that Samuel stayed in for the next play but then was replaced by Ellis Hobbs for the remainder of the series. He didn't appear to be injured. This was before he suffered the stinger. Was this Sean McDermott's way of sending a message to Samuel to not give up so much ground? Or was there another reason for his removal? Samuel did bring down TE David Thomas 1 yard short of the marker on third down later in the game. It wasn't exactly a textbook tackle, but it got the job done.

This was a horrible game for Zont, it looked like he was trying to set up Brees but then never made his move.  I don't know what was up with him but I don't expect to see a game like this from him again .... ever.

Sheldon Brown - Solid tackle on Colston down near the goal line to save a touchdown and force a Saints field goal. Brown was right on Henderson on a 3rd-and-11 play that went for 38 yards in the second half. I’m still trying to figure out how Brees fit the ball in that space. It looked like the Eagles played Brown at safety at times and had Mikell cover a Saints receiver or tight end. Also, did you notice who was one of the guys most excited for Kevin Kolb after his first touchdown pass? That's right. It was Brown pumping up the young QB on the sidelines.

I thought Brown had a very good game, when he got beat it was almost like magic.  I couldn't believe that play, overall I wasn't that upset with Brown.

Trent Cole - As usual, the energy was there from Cole, but the Saints did a good job of keeping him away from Brees. That included reserve left tackle Jermon Bushrod really competing. I thought Cole would eat him up, but it didn't happen. The Saints gave Bushrod help at times, and Brees was a master of getting rid of the ball quickly and feeling the pressure. Cole did sack Brees once during the Saints’ second offensive drive. And he was credited with a tackle for loss.

I can remember several times seeing two ... that's right ... two running backs chip Cole.  The Saints did a great job on him he was pretty much a non factor.

Omar Gaither - He got pushed around on most of the Saints' effective run plays. Gaither was nowhere to be found on Bell’s 23-yard run in the first quarter. He just looked to be a step or two behind on several plays and performed poorly against the run.

It was a tough day for Gaither he seemed to over pursue many times and fell victim to play fakes.  I am a Gaither fan and think he has the skills but he does tend to have these games where he just looks lost, not something you want from your defensive QB.

** The Eagles had only 10 players on the field during a 3rd-and-goal play in the first quarter. Hanson tried to call timeout but didn’t get the referees’ attention in time. The defense stopped New Orleans short of the end zone anyway.

I didn't realize this ...

Anyway check back for this guys assessment each week, I'll post the links in the fanshots if I get around to it.

I'm not a fan

Of Gaither. Quite frankly, I’m not a fan of any of our linebackers except Bradley be we don’t know how he’s going to be when he gets back. No one comes back from an ACL injury to an all pro the next year. Akeem Jordan is starting to win me over since he’s the only linebacker who showed up in both games. Otherwise we need to revamp the core next off-season. Rolando McClain, Eric Norwood, Dekoda Watson, and Navorro Bowman are all possible draft choices (I would crap my pants if we got McClain). I think Moise will be great in the future since Maryland has done a pretty good job over the decade putting linebackers in the NFL.

Bradley, Matt Ware and Quintin Caver were the only LB’s that we took in the 1st three rounds. O yea, Gocong, while a DE in college, is now a LB, so make that 4.

Since Caver and Ware were busts, and Gocong is average (I still say he should have been a DE in the NFL), Bradley is our only really good LB drafted in the last decade. I suppose Gathier was a decent pick in the 5th.

I know Reid’s philosophy is the game is won and lost in the trenches, and I do not disagree, but the Eagles really do seem to sort of ignore the LB position.

I think it just funny how much Andy has looked over it

Over Andy’s tenure he has drafted (i counted) 9 linebackers and having one being picked up as an undrafted free agent. Of all nine 6 have been from actual notable colleges. The others Joe Mays-NDSU, Chris Gocong-Cal Poly, Matt McCoy-San Diego State, Akeem Jordan-James Madison? And most of the ones from big colleges are from schools that arent known for their defensive talent. Barry Gardner-Northwestern, Quinton Caver-Arkansas, Tyreo Harrison-Notre Dame. Only 3 players have come from schools who have been known for defensive talent. Stewart Bradley-Nebraska, Omar Gaither-Tenn., and Moise Fokou-Maryland. Seriously, who is Andy having scout these players? Why is trying to strike gold in all these small schools? I think Fokou will be great in the long run since Maryland has done a good job with the last decade of linebackers.

Here’s another messed up thing:

2005 NFL Draft: Eagles 3rd round pick: Ryan Moats (#77), next LB picked Kirk Morrison (#78),
4th round pick: Sean Considine (#102), next LB picked Brian Poppinga (#125)
5th rounders: Trent Cole (ok)/Scott Young(#172), next LB picked Michael Boley (#160)

2006 NFL Draft: Eagles 3rd round pick: Chris Gocong (#71), next LB picked Clint Ingram (#80)
5th rounder: Jeremy Bloom (#147), next LB picked Tim Dobbins (#151)

2007 NFL Draft: Eagles 7th round pick: Nate Ilaoa (#236), next LB picked Keyaunta Dawson (#242)

2008 NFL Draft: Eagles 3rd round pick: Bryan Smith (#80), next LB picked Cliff Avril (#92)

*Cliff Avril was named to the SI 2009 All-Rookie team
*Tim Dobbins is the reason Matt Wilhelm is unemployed right now
*Brian Poppinga is giving A.J. Hawk a reason to look over his shoulders

How is Andy missing all this talent. I’m not mad about taking Trent Cole over Michael Boley, but funny how most of the people we drafted aren’t even on the team or some of them in the NFL and all the linebackers I’ve named are no less than good players. Matter fact, most of them are great.

Sean Lee

Amazing talent coming out of PSU with Bowman. Had an ACL tear last year but seeing his performances at the first three games I would say he hasn’t lost a step yet. ACL tear and current left knee sprain my hold down his draft value.

It was a good post.

I agree with all of them but one.
Gaither isn’t doing it for me. I don’t get to rewatch the games but I don’t remember seeing him doing anything. Lets hope he comes back strong next week.

I'm a Saints fan and wanted to put in my 2 cents worth

I thought Gaither had a really bad day, I am not impressed with him, but instead of debating his skills, it is obvious the rest of the season will decide that issue. I think Reid should have kept Wilhelm. He’s not phenomenal, but he could help you with Joe Mays out. I think Wilhelm is better than Mays, but possibly Mays has more potential. Regardless it seems like you are desperately thin at LB and safety.

Chris Gocong is somewhere between a little below average and a little above average. If you had Ray Lewis next to him, it might work. But with someone like Gaither, it could be tough. Also, if Jim Johnson and Brian Dawkins were with you, it would all be more likely to work.

It’s just my opinion, but I think your safeties are weak. Having a rookie start at Safety is always a tough situation. But, if Q Demps were really special, he would be starting. Something is wrong there even before the injury. Again, if Jim Johnson were running the show it might work. And if Sean Mc Dermott can fill JJs shoes, it might just work. But, and I don’t mean to be talking trash, but I think Jim Johnson and Brian Dawkins were that unbelieveablly good, that it could be a tough year for you guys. The Eagles have made a living off the blitz, but blitzes are risky and create opportunities for the Mannings, and the Favres, and the Bradys, and the Brees’es of the world. It is a thin line between success and disaster in that world. Eagles teams have been able to win that battle because of the schemes and personnnel they have had. I’m not sure this defense can. And, an Eagles defense that has to back off from blitzing is not an Eagles defense.

Trent Cole is very good. He doesn’t seem to me to be Julus Peppers or Michael Strahan, or Usi Ameniyora, but he’s close and maybe he will be just as good, it’s hard to tell. But, the supporting cast on the DL, in my assessment, is a step down from Cole. But, you put it all together, and I think you will need to have a Jim Johnson type effort from Sean Mc Dermot for it all to go as well as it has to. I think he did wonders with players that were good but not great. And, until I see otherwise, I think sean Mc Dermot is no Jim Johnson. Jim Johnson’s 2nd half was always scary. He always counter punched and had the upper hand and found a way to exploit the other team. You just knew it was going to happen. I think teams went in the locker room not saying “what adjustment should we make?” but they said “what adjustments will Jim make?” Now I know this was only one game, but the defense played so-so in the first half and fell apart in the second half. I never rember seeing a Jim Johnson defense do that.

Well, anyway, I hope you don’t mind my comments. You may disagree, but I know they are well thought out. I know the Eagles well. But, I am a Saints fan through and through and I know we have something special this year There haven’t been many years I could say that

Now I know this was only one game, but the defense played so-so in the first half and fell apart in the second half. I never rember seeing a Jim Johnson defense do that.

That’s actually what happened in our horrible blowout against the Ravens last year.

First Half: Allowed 10 points on defense (1 Touchdown, 1 field goal)
Allowed 141 total yards of offense.

Second Half: Allowed 17 points on defense ( 2 Touchdowns, 1 field goal)
Allowed 185 yards total of offense.

It may not look like a huge example of falling apart until you look at the drive summary.

1st Half: Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Field Goal, TD
2nd Half: Punt, Punt, Field Goal, TD, TD

The Ravens time of possession was drastically larger in the 2nd half also, indicating that we could not get our men off the field on defense. The Ravens managed to sustain a 12 minute drive on us, which to me looks like a defense falling apart. At the end of the day, all defenses have a few poor outings. What really matters is their performance over the course of an entire season. For example, despite the above statistics that point to a terrible day on defense, we managed to have one of the elite units in the league last year. I guess my point is that I have no reason to worry about our defense just yet.

Got to hand it to ya...

Pretty good analysis. Best of Luck for the rest of the season and I really hope we get to revisit this question down the line, perhaps in the title game. I am a fan of Gocon, however. I agree with you on him, but remember he is still coming into his own. I think people forget how hard his transition was. He really has just started to feel a little comfortable. Definitely wasn’t his best game, but got to say that after the first drive or so, Shockey disappeared. Haven’t got the tape to analyze, but that would be Gocong’s man most of the time. And I believe it was Shockey that made the Eagles go out and get Gocong and convert him in the first place. Dhani Jones anyone? He sucked so bad, he routinely not only took himself out of the play but he would fall and take out two more of our guys as well. Congrats! See you around the bend.

"That’s actually what happened in our horrible blowout against the Ravens last year."

If I remember correctly, Kevin Kolb’s record setting 108 yd interception for a TD kind of turned that game around. Well, actually it was a close game until a 53 yd td pass from Flacco to Clayton? But then the interception a few minutes later did you guys in. I think those two plays were the end of it. But it was close for 3 qtrs. Seemed like it was a closer game. BTW, Kolb kind of gives up some pretty big interceptions, doesn’t he. Seems ti have a knack for it. I guess he’s young and inexperienced, but those 2 that total 205 yards must haunt his dreams.
