The Morning After: Eagles Week Two Injury Report
Last night's heartbreaking 48-22 loss against the Saints wasn't the only bad thing to happen to the Eagles last night. According to a post game release on PE.com, three players came out of Sunday's game nursing injuries. Star receiver DeSean Jackson left the game in the beginning of the fourth quarter with a groin injury and is currently listed as day-to-day. Brian Westbrook also left in the fourth quarter as well with an ankle sprain. According to reports by ESPN, the surgically-repaired ankle was swollen but coach Andy Reid said it would not require an MRI. Westbrook is hoping to play next week, but whether his ankle will allow it remains to be seen. Perhaps the worst recipient of injures though was reserve cornerback Dimitri Patterson, who fractured his hand during coverage on a first quarter punt return. Patterson's surgery is scheduled for today and he is expected to miss the next few weeks.
Cornerback Asante Samuel also sustained a stinger during a collision the fourth quarter, but he shouldn't miss any playing time.

I’m pretty sure Jackson did play after he banged up his ankle. So I’m guessing that means it wasn’t too serious.

Are you talking about Jackson’s groin or Westbrook’s ankle?

Asante is one tough guy.
For his size he brings everything when forced to make a tackle. He also seems to be willing to play banged up. I know he didn’t have a great game yesterday, but he is becoming a favorite player for me. Shame on me for questioning why we signed him. Not that I questioned we signed a good guy, but seemed odd at the time.
Exactly
That’s exactly how I feel about him, and he has already become one of my favourite Eagles too. I for one really wanted us to sign him and even mentioned it to a friend during his franchise Tag dispute with NE. I never knew how awesome he was until I watched him for 16 games last year though, I knew he was good but now I consider him great.

Man i love Asante but he truely needs to stop leading with his head during tackles. The guy is just not that big, and he throws his head and neck around like it is made of steel. I would really hate to see him have a serious neck injury and be unable to grab them Pick 6’s all day
paterson
bye bye patterson .. hello jack? it could be coming ;-)

I hope so
If Patterson is out I hope it’s jack that gets the call.

I tend to recall during the preseason
I was very worried about the vanilla defensive play-calling scheme McDermott showed us.
For a week, those concerns were obviously curbed. But again, it revealed itself this game. I saw no exotic blitzes, no extreme pressure like I had seen the week before. And let’s face it, Carolina’s offensive line is significantly better in talent than the Saints.
The real difference between McDermott and Johnson, as of right now, is if the defense got in a hole, Johnson was incredible at halftime adjustments. He was a wizard at many aspects of being a defensive coordinator, but this was truly his calling card; he would find some way to get to the opposing quarterback and shore up the defense every single half.
We got used to this every-Sunday excellence. So yesterday, when we saw this embarrassment, you have to wonder: what kind of halftime adjustment did McDermott put forth? It involved a lot of blitzes, but not enough misdirection and overload to make Brees pay. And, quite frankly, that’s the only way you’re going to beat Drew Brees.
This game scares me. And I’m really scared about next week, too. If McDermott is put into a similar situation, will he take his foot off the pedal and continue to be tenuous? Or will he devise schemes that Jim would take pride in?
This defense has the talent. That talent just needs to be utilized – they played about as bad as they could play last week from a technical standpoint. The players are certainly not being let off the hook, I grant you – but for a scheme devised with a clear primary goal of disrupting the quarterback…it didn’t come close to accomplishing that.
Hopefully, we’ll chin up. Because while everyone is saying the next few weeks are easy, the eleven after that? Not so much. We can’t afford to lose these games. Period. And with a defensive effort like the one we saw this past week, we’ll be splitting.
We would be lucky to split.
To get out this fix, someone has to light a fire on D. This is the leadership issue that so many brought up after B.Dawk, Runyan and Thomas left and JJ died. Is the talent there? Without question. Are they capable of shutting down a team like N.O.? Probably, on a good day, definitely. But someone has to step up and drive that defense in order to save the season, and that hasn’t happened yet.
I liked where things were headed in the pre-season when we heard all the noise about Asante and Sheldon Brown stepping up, but last yesterday, well let’s not talk about yesterday.
So now AR has another major challenge. He never ends the season with the same problems he had at the beginning, so I am really interested in seeing how he addresses this one. I’m sure he has some tricks up his sleeve. I sure wish Jon Runyan was passing on some good ol fashioned meanness to the FNG’s right now, even as a coach.

all I can figure is he backed off because the TEs were killing us and then he never went back … it was frustrating but to be honest he wasn’t the reason Asante was 8 yards off his man (sorry Zont). At some point the players have to make some plays regardless of the play call.

Say what . . . ?
The reason that McDermott didn’t blitz is because he knows that Brees is the best QB in the NFL (besides maybe Manning) at hitting the ‘hot route’ and getting the ball away. When the Eagles did blitz (9 plays), it was a complete and utter failure. Brees was 7 for 7 with over a 1 TD and nearly 100 YDs throwing.
The real issue is that the Eagles’ front 4 can’t generate any kind of pressure consistently and Cole was largely a complete non-factor. Plus, the Saints line was clearly superior at pass-blocking last week than the Panthers were in Week 1.
As for Johnson’s “halftime-adjustments” do you remember watching just last season when the defense got off a rough start including getting largely embarrassed by Dallas on MNF early in the year? Johnson’s greatest strength as a coordinator wasn’t so much in making in-game adjustments as it was getting better as the season went on. Just look at the numbers from the NFC East games where the defense would almost always put better numbers in the 2nd matchup during the season.
The problem largely wasn’t McDermott’s play-calling. It was poor execution across the board including some really poor zone coverage (Harris is clueless right now in coverage and basically got benched for Jones), lots of missed tackles, poor containment on running plays especially misdirection plays. Short-field position didn’t help the defense either.
Basically chalk it up to a team and QB who executed well, has the Eagles’ number, and poor execution across the board by the defense. Defense isn’t nearly as bad as it looked this weak but it isn’t a Top 5 unit in the NFL either.

Entirely disagreed.
I’m not constituting a basic 5-man rush as a blitz. Overloads and misdirections, by definition, require 6 men gunning for the line of scrimmage. How many of those did we have yesterday? The entire point of the Eagles defense during this run of success is the uncanny ability to disguise blitzes. If a blitz is properly disguised, there’s no way in hell a quarterback is going to consistently hit his hot route.
Also, “largely a complete non-factor” is not in any way proper English.
Disguised blitz?
“I’m not constituting a basic 5-man rush as a blitz.”
Anytime you rush more than 4 guys (even in a 3-4 base), it is likely going to create an opening in the passing game even if to a RB who is a check-down option in the flat.
“Overloads and misdirections, by definition, require 6 men gunning for the line of scrimmage.”
The last thing you want to do on a misdirection like a trap or a counter is blitz and get too far upfield. You don’t want to attack the line of scrimmage as much as hold the point of attack & close down the lanes.
“If a blitz is properly disguised, there’s no way in hell a quarterback is going to consistently hit his hot route.”
What? That is the essence of being able to be an effective QB at the NFL level. That and being able to read through 3-4 progressions when you have decent protection.
Brees is very good at avoiding pressure in the pocket and if the Eagles had blitzed much more it likely would have lead to similar results. What don’t you understand that blitzing was a failed option against Brees this past weekend when it was used?
I’m hoping this game can be chalked up to the players on defense playing bad and Brees being a quarterback god. If McDermott is a fraud we have no SB chance.

It's week 2
Can we eagles fans remember that. Their defense didn’t play well but the two turnovers to start the second half were killer. Down 17 and a guy at qb making his first NFL start, the outcome wasn’t that surprising. Honestly if I were a saints fan I’d be more concerned. They’ve played two qbs both making their first NFL starts and had trouble stopping them. Talking heads like matt millen picking the saints to go to the super bowl after beating the lions and the eagles without mcnabb is insane. Their defense isn’t any better than it was last year. They got a lot of breaks against the eagles and the biggest was mcnabb not playing. So what I’m saying is get some perspective.
Westbrook . . .
Given that McNabb is likely going to be a question mark from a health perspective for a good part of the season now, I was really hoping that Westbrook would provide this spark this team desperately needs. He showed a little of that in Week 1 and I was hoping that Reid could limit him Westbrook to 15-20 touches as Westbrook rounded into playing form.
Now Westbrook hurt that same ankle and is back to square 1 again. Eagles do have McCoy but this offense is going to struggle mightly this year if McNabb/Westbrook spend the better part o the year banged up.
BTY – Buckhalter has been running hard and effectively in Denver in early action. It mystifies me why Reid utterly refuses to run the ball especially with a supposed solid FB this year.
"and let's face it the Panther offensive line is significantly better than the Saints?"
give me a break, the Saints O line gave up only 13 sacks last year. All returned. Our only Pro Bowler (besides Drew) didn’t play a snap yet this year. We had absolutely no problem running the ball on either you or Detroit, in fact Detroit’s defense made it harder on us. Even Reggie ran on you. You guys gotta be realistic. You are way overestimating your defense, your linebackers are mediocre at best as well as your safeties. You will have huge trouble executing your blitz packages this year without Dawkins and Jim Johnson to find a way to get your other D line players to perform on a level with Cole, who is very good but not among the top 10 in the league, and he can’t carry a defense like a Rewggie White or an LT could .
Andy Reid really screwed up 1) Shawn and Stacy Andrews?? WTF
2) O Line- where’s Runyon??
3) Starting a rookie at safety and letting B Dawk walk??
4) LB depth is deploreable- should have kept Wilhelm as backup
5) Letting go of Feely was stupid- at least he has started some games . Neither he nor Kolb are the future, but Kolb holds the recorsd for the 2 longest interceptions in the NFL history and his confidence is shot.
6) It’s going to be tough with Omar Gaither
7) Assante Samuel will struggle against tall/ big receivers and there is no B Dawk to bail him out
8) No one can replace Jim Johnson’
sorry, you don’t want to hear it, but it’s true and you got me going saying the Pathers oline is better than ours (think
like if I said dallas Oline was better than yours!)

Not even addressing that nonsense you wrote...
Let’s focus on something different…
Phillies, Sixers, Flyers… and Saints?!? You’ve lost your Phillies priviliges.
And let’s get another thing out of the way… The Saints absolutely destroyed us Sunday. Agreed? Agreed, ok great. How much of a dickbag do you have to be to come over to BGN hoping to talk shit, realizing that you have to wait a day before you can post anything, sitting by the computer for 24 hours counting down the seconds until you can really rub it in, and firing off a fairly weak post that’s riddled with complete nonsense? On the official dickbag scale, I’ll go with an 8.2, meaning that your attempts at dickbaggery even somehow fall a little short.
Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(
I’m going to go ahead and say that nothing you say should be taken seriously based on the fact that you didn’t watch either of the Saints games. I say this because of the ridiculous statement you made:
We had absolutely no problem running the ball on either you or Detroit, in fact Detroit’s defense made it harder on us.
Detroit gave up 157 rushing yards
Eagles gave up 133 rushing yards … so how is it that Detroit made it harder on you?
Our defense got worked, I’m not going to sit here and act like they didn’t but let’s not make rash statements like the Lions did better in an attempt to attack another team. Deal.

at least Phillies fans and Flyers fans have some class. Eagles fans are pathetic. They always boo their own, just takes time.
