Lets talk Kolb

I know there are other post today about Kolb. But I don't want to go into a who post either defending him of killing him. There are soo many polarizing oppinions on this guy that its really confusing to know if the Eagles fans like him or don't.

Tell me what did you think of his performance? Is he the QB of the future? Was yesterday his fault? Where you excited by his performance or dissappointed?

I prefer to debate my opinion via comments, but not through the actual post. So please post your oppinions below.

Poll
How do I feel about Kolbs performance?
excited, he shows a lot of promise, maybe our QB of the future
63 votes
He was OK, should start some where, but I prefer McNabb for us
75 votes
Not impressed, although I am OK with him as our Backup
44 votes
Not impressed, but he may be a journey man backup in the league
25 votes
Not an NFL player, absolutely horrible player.

I agree with GCobb, and am a Kolb hater, and am admitting it. And will hate on him even if he performs well because I hate him.

I predicted 2 td 220 yrd, 1 int.

I also predicted that we would have 2 rushing td and 2 fgs.

Kevin performed even better than I expected. He had about 291 before he went into those aggresive Picks. He just lost focus and started trying to make plays. Although Sharper just jumped his route, but Kevin did make it obvious he was going to Celek. But Kevin will learn from that.

Over all, he did move the ball well, I give him a B- for his first start.

That first pick was just a bad through, he’s got to put that ball a little closer to the sidelines, but he will learn that.

Look guys, he is what he is. Brett Farve is a turn over machine, and Kolb will throw more picks than McNabb. McNabb is very carefull with the, but sometimes does not throw it to you unless you are wide open. Kolb does throw the ball to you, and this will result with more picks.

I fealt his pocket presence was better than the past. He has shown improvement. But I will admit, He doesn’t have a deep ball. But neither doesn’t Mark Sanchez in that case.

blind guess

I wasn’t able to watch the game at all yesterday just some highlights and was able to read the box score, etc. So I’ll be honest I was never really a Kolb fan, he never once impressed me even the slightest bit in his mop up duties. But I also knew he was put into some tough situations.

After yesterdays performance I’ll have to say he impressed me some and disappointed me some as well. It looked like he put up some decent numbers, although having to come from behind and passing a lot the passing yards will be up there most of the time. But can someone tell me, what is up with the interceptions? That to me is my biggest worry with him. He throws intereceptions like he’s handing out candy to kids on Halloween. What is up with that, just bad play by him or good defensive play on the part of the Saints? Like I said I wasn’t able to watch the game so I was just able to see that he threw 3 interceptions. I will say the TD to Jackson was a thing of beauty when I saw that highlight!!!

So overall I think Kolb could be a starting QB in this league if he can cut down on the interceptions.

by slandog on Sep 21, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he got sloppy at the end and lost focused. Kind of like Brett Farve.

Those are aggressive Picks, the score was out of hand and he was just trying to make plays. You have to consider that. Every QB throws picks bro, even the Golden child Donovan has thrown some bad picks in his life. But Kolbs last 2 were just a case of him losing focus and trying to street footbal (Very much like Farve)

Yep

I was impressed by Kolb. He’s a bit to predictable (only throws the underneath stuff) and makes some SH*TTY decisions, but he’ll play his way out of that.

The coaches certainly didn’t help him out by calling 51 passes in his first game.

But whatever Aaron Rodgers did to strengthen his arm, Kolb should do it double. He needs to prevent that shortcoming from limiting his starting potential

by DLawrence on Sep 21, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well...

He had enough arm to hit DeSean Jackson in stride. I think his arm strength is fine…what we saw was a guy that knows this is not his team even when he’s taking the snaps with the first team. It is not that Kolb is average, it is that McNabb is a Hall of Famer and he can still play ball.

Its not fare to Kolb, McNabb is a HOFer.

Sanchez and Breese have no arm as well.

Both are performing well. Its not about arm strengh.

Aikman couldn’t throw a bomb if his life depended on it. Brady really doesn’t have a big arm either.

I can't see videos, but will most definately peep that at home.

I most have missed it if it was a big arm throw. But maybe I’m wrong on my assessment. But I have to see the video first.

But don’t disregard the argument, you don’t need a big arm to be successful.

I take your word on it. I just never pegged Drew as a big arm guy.

I was always told that was his biggest knock and the reason he slipped in the draft till the second round. I was always told how hard he had to work to dispell those mythes that he didn’t have a strong arm. But I never really seen enough games with him at QB to determine either way. He’s always made good throws, with good velocity, but I never seen him air it out. Maybe I just didn’t see it, doesn’t mean he can’t do it.

When Kolb sets his feet and throws correctly, his arm is fine. Even when he throws on the run he can make strong throws. It’s when he has to throw off his back foot when he loses the zip on passes. Problem is, there’s about 7 or 8 QBs(if that) who can still put a ton of velocity on a pass thrown off their back foot. Ironically, two are on this team…

You don’t have to be one of those guys who can to be good. Manning can’t, Brady can’t, Brees can’t… Those guys don’t have that kind of ridiculous arm, and they’re obviously all great.

Brees...

does have a ridiculous arm. I’ve seen him throw bombs off his back foot and throwing across his body will moving sideways.

by Route36 on Sep 21, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree, I have never seen Brees throw deep off his back foot.

Brees has an average arm at best. I’m sure most would agree. But his game isn’t throwing deep, he makes great reads.

(Or maybe I missed the game where Brees let it rip of his back foot for 50 yards in the air)

Bleed green, or don't bleed at all!

by yophillybro on Sep 21, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Most won't agree with you...

Brees is known for having a great arm.

But his game isn’t throwing deep, he makes great reads.

Brees averaged 8.0 passing avg last year 5069 yards.

In comparison, Jay Cutler had a 7.3 avg 4526 yards.

You don’t get the kind of yards Brees had by making short quick passes.

Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.

let the people speak (Maybe I'm misreading Brees' style)

Can someone other than Route36 settle this? Does Brees have a big time arm? Or is he a read type couple back, with an average arm who makes good decisions by reading the defenses and putting the ball on good spots?

Bleed green, or don't bleed at all!

by yophillybro on Sep 21, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would say his arm is above average, but not really strong.

He can definitely throw a nice deep ball though. That’s for sure. He is more of a read the defense and find the good spots kinda guy, but you don’t rack up the yards he has without putting the ball up every now and then. He isn’t gonna beat McNabb in an arm strength contest, but he isn’t going to lose it really badly either.

by NOLACuse on Sep 21, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

8.0 yard passing average doesn’t prove a big time arm I can throw dimes 8-10 yards.

Brees has a strong accurate arm but he isn’t throwing lasers like Cutler, Palmer or even McNabb and Vick.

So can you settle this for me.

I never saw Brees as a big arm guy. Wasn’t that his big knock in the draft? He slipped till the second round as a result, and was allowed to leave San Diego because of it.

I always thought he has a NFL arm, but not one of the stronger arms in the NFL Am I wrong on my read on him. He is a good decision maker, and puts the ball in good safe spots, and really reads the defense well.

I would say he as an average arm at best. But so did Aikman, Brady, etc.

I never said he had a weak arm

You know what, I think we both agree strangely enough. When I use the word, he has no arm. I mean, he doesnt’ have McNabbs arm. Not that he has a bad arm. He just isn’t know for that uber strong arm. Most NFL QB have good strong arm, (they catagorize it as a NFL arm, or a live arm). I just don’t thing he has one of the stronger arms.

My arguement is, arm strengh is not important, it how you use that arm.

I’m sure you agree with that. But I think Brees has an NFL arm. I should be carefull when I say he has no arm. (I should say, he doesn’t have McNabbs arm).

that’s the thing Brees has a strong arm but he isn’t throwing bombs off his back foot or while rolling out like Palmer did before his knee injury.

70 yard strike to Colston sounds awesome but the actual pass was only 30 yards. An average NFL QB should be able to throw 50-60 yards accurate. While running forward like Brees did 30 yards is admirable no doubt about that but not impressively strong.

You know who had some of the stongest arms I have ever seen.

Randal Cunningham has a cannon bro. Donovan McNabb, Mike Vick, Vinny Testeverde, and the strongest I have ever seen was actually Kyle Boller. Dude threw a ball from mid field through the uprights on one knee during the combines. Dude has a monsterously strong arm, but he was a head case.

That’s a common misconception. Having a big arm is more about throwing the short stuff than it is the long stuff. Pretty much any qb that makes it to the NFL can chuck it downfield. The guys with the cannon arms are the ones who can throw the deep out against good coverage.

Brees can make every throw, don’t get me wrong on that. He’s not deficient in any way. Saying he doesn’t have mcnabbs arm strength is no knock. Not at all.

Jeff George had one the best arms in NFL history and that guy sucked.

Kolb threw what the play calling dictated.
I feel he did really well and his pocket presence was great.
Our O-line was terrible yesterday.
ST’d blew nuts, penalties and turnovers lost this game.
Giving Drew Brees the ball on our own 20, 2 times in 2 minutes will NOT win the game.
Prior to that we were well in it.
Our D needs to learn to tackle and was NOT agressive enough with Drew.

even though we gave the ball up in the 30 yard line 2 times.

You gotta hold a TD to a FG at least once. Giving 2 TDs is still inexcusable, as the redzone is supposed to be a hard place to move the ball in. At least its hard for us.

Kolb was fine

He’s a starter, and could be a special one, in this league IF he’s given the support and time. We’re lucky to have him as a back up.

The D was so awful yesterday, that I don’t want to think about it. I’ll call it an anomaly unless it becomes a trend.

The ST coach should shot, stabbed, and then put through a wood chipper. After that he should be shot again, and then burned. Somebody’s Andy’s ass-burger today.

interesting fact...

What did Kolb have yesterday…390 yards ? Lets say 100 of them were when the game was out of reach.
Heres Mcnabbs first start…
8 of 21 passes for 60 yards
9 carries for 49 rushing yards

Eagles won that game against washington but the D and special teams helped out a LOT.(pretty much the opposite of yesterdays game) So maybe Kolb isnt so bad…hes just not ready….YET. No way can he compare to mcnabb now…down the road ? Time will tell. I think it was a decent first start. A solid “B” IMO..

but I think its fair because we gave McNabb a chance and Kevin has never gotten that.

I don’t think it unfair to consider life after McNabb, although he is our best ever, there will be a time when he can’t play anymore either through injury or age. Its not a diss to McNabb that we evaluate Kolb.

Is he the QB of the future? Who knows? Has he been given a fair shot here? No!!! Fans have trashed him, even when he performed well, we find holes and complaints.

The point is a vaid one mad by Gdog2009, McNabb wasn’t a world beating QB at first, but he devoped into one. What did Kolb due yesterday to make you think he is a bad QB and may not develope into a good QB? Lets be fair in evaluating Kolb.

ITS JUST ONE GAME...

Kolb had a good day … not great … good. He made a lot of mistakes but the one thing i am not seeing in any posts are the good decisions he made. He threw the ball away when he needed to instead of throwing more picks. Yes, he relied a little too heavily on his receivers to be in the exact place they are supposed to be on the timing route. But lets face it, without that int, and without the last int that came on a hailmary (i never count those when judging a performance – anything can happen there), he did a great job. He just needs to relax a little when he is under the gun. He wanted too much to win. He did not need to win this game to prove himself to the fans …. a W would have been nice, but he made his talents known. He is young, he will learn, and THIS IS JUST ONE GAME. We will get another chance to see him play this weekend against a less explosive team, and when we win that game, all those fickle McNabb haters out there are going to be screaming for this guy the second McNabb throws his first INT when he comes back.

IF you want to compare him to any quarterbacks, lets not compare him to a HOF’er, how about Eli Manning…. who started off making just as many if not more mistakes…. or Phillip Rivers, etc.

I mixed some numbers together to get the stats, not necessarily based on 100%.

For instance, I added those who think he should start in philly with those who think he should start somewhere else. As they both think he should start.

I added those who think he should start with those who are OK with him as our backup. Assuming that if he is good enough to start, then they should all agree that he is a suitable back up.

These combination of stats give us a scale of what the people actuall fell.
You can get the scale based on 100% right off of the poll though.
