Kolb Performed Well

Deal with it.

Star-divide

Let me start by saying, it was his job not to lose the game.  None of us expected him to win it for us.  We asked him not to lose it, and this loss is far from his fault.

Around half time, he had about 196 yards through the air and no interceptions, along with a TD.  He had made excellent decisions throughout the game.  Thanks in large part to sustained drives we seldom see, we were down just 17-13, in spite of the defense holding up as well as swiss cheese.  During the first half, the saints were held to 3 and out just twice, had a sustained drive near the red zone end with an INT, and scored on their other three possessions.  Not impressive.

After half time, we all know Ellis Hobbs fumbled providing a short field for NO, which they scored with.  Then Kolb made a terrible throw, and lead to another 7 points for NO.  No defending that.  It was poor, bad job Kolb.  However, he came back out there, and by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, we were down just two scores.  Good job Kolb, you kept us in the game.  You didn't make any more mistakes.

The defense did not do their part.  According to my count, the Eagles D allowed the saints to score on four of the six posessions they had in the second half.  Maybe McNabb can keep up with that, but Kolb can't just yet.  This was his first start, and to expect him to lead the team to 40 points is ridiculous.  He made a couple of mistakes, but people who are accentuating his pair of INTs at the end of the game are just stubborn (especially the game ending INT...seriously, who cares?).  Those were meaningless.  It is more representative to look at the first three quarters, during which he performed admirably.  Had the eagles D held the saints O to a field goal at some point during the game, or decided to stop them at any point during the game, Kolb could very well be a hero instead of a scape goat today.

All I ask is to give the kid a fair shake.  I put Kolb down for a little under 60% completion percentage along with an INT and 2 TDs and just over 220 yards.  This was considered crazy.  As it turned out, however, he completed the game with 60.8% completion percentage (those who say he's inaccurate...wrong).  Through the first three quarters, according to my count (which may be flawed) he had 222 yards (before garbage time).  Not bad.  He had one INT.  Not bad (although it was costly).  Overall, he had a good game.  Garbage time didn't go well, but by then the game was so out of hand those stats don't count for much.

Someone needed to give him credit.  This one is on the D.  They didn't rise to the challenge.  They stopped no one.  Blame them, leave Kolb alone for once.

yeah i agree

im hearing so many people saying kolb “played not good not bad”…i think giving the circumstances, the numbers, the hits, the pressure, 51 attempts, down pretty much the entire game and a million other things he played well for his first start

...plus...

there are so many QBS (farve, manning, mcnabb, brady, namath, and a few others i can’t think off) that have done far worse in their first game and/or season. if he had the same stats and won, everyone would have said he played great, is a future HOFer, or at least future QB

in there first games as starters

Kolb did better than Stafford, Russel and Quinn… Just naming a few.

yes but

Kolb also had 3 years to learn the system, mature to the NFL speed, etc….just naming a few.

Russell, Quinn and Kolb were all drafted the same year. The only person he names that fits your argument is Stafford.

well I just thought that it was a pretty fair analysis to say

stafford but you can take him out and I still win this arguement…

Kolb put up better numbers than Russel who started late in his rookie season.

Quinn just won the starting job this year and had only a few starts last year.

WTF

why the he;; does reid have our backup QB throwing 51 times…we have arguably one of the best running backs in the league and he has 13 attempts, andy seases to amaze me, i know thats his game, passing but, how many games have we lsot due to the fatc that we play one dimentional games.andy needs to smarten up

maybe because we were down the entire game, and the only way to get back in it was to attempt to stretch the field

Yep

when the game was close, it looked like they used the Wildcat a lot and used a lot of short quick passes to take pressure off Kolb.

Thought that was one of the bright spots actually

I think is showed confidence in Kolb, not lack of.

McNabb has a problem with short quick throws, but can avoid rush better, and is a big play guy.

Kolb excels in short quick throws, and doesn’t complaine about the wildcat. Why not roll that out with Kolb. He doesn’t care about the play calling, he’s just happy to play. Where Donny probrably would have gestured to stop to the sidelines.

Agree

I don’t think Kolb played terrible, but far from great. He missed a lot of easy throws that NFL quarterbacks make. For instance, going in to half time, missing Desean who was that open in the back of the endzone was just a poor play. Hitting Westbrook in the back foot with the ball on a 10 yard in route that would have gotten a first down also comes to mind. That being said, it was his first game and I understand.

I cannot, however, understand why we didn’t use the run game and screen game more that what we did. There’s no way in hell he should have been asked tot hrow that much. I know the Saints scored early, but our first drive should have been a clock eater with LOTS of runs. I loved the home run ball, but after that, we really needed to slow it down and control the clock. Poor game planning, terirble defense and WAY too many penalties on special teams.

My only real disagreement with your post, eagleyosh

Is you forgot to give some blame to special teams. They totally ate a bowl of dick salad today.

I agree that Kolb wasn’t terrible. There was a situation or two where Kolb could have stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush in stead of rushing his pass. But, I thought he did a pretty good job on that last scoring drive at the end of the first half. I was actually fairly impressed with the Eagles clock management on that drive.

Couldn’t have said it any better, thanks for a much needed post.

It was widely agreed upon that Kolb was not expected to actively win us this game in Tom Brady fashion. He was only supposed to limit mistakes and give us a shot, which he definitely did. The only reason we didn’t have a shot is because our defense was a steaming pile of shit today. And no, the defense wasn’t tired because Kolb was keeping them out on the field. They looked like shit ever since the first series. The defense was tired because they couldn’t get themselves off the field.

I agree.

Kolb didn’t lose us the game, the D did.
By the way, is anyone else gettin a little tired of the repeated wildcat formations, etc? I mean i’m all for confusing the D, but in my opinion we did it a little too much. I guess you can’t argue that we did pretty well with it, but i’m not so sure these types of plays should be used quite so often in our offense. I’m hoping it was strictly because Kolb was in and they wanted to mix things up more often for the defense, because in week 1 it didn’t seem like we did these plays quite so often.
One play i did appreciate was when Kolb lined up at WR and ended up throwing the ball after receiving a pitch. It ended in an incompletion, but that was one play that I actually enjoyed watching unfold.

by Q27 on Sep 20, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i dont know about you all, but that third quarter interception was the dagger in the heart. very poor time to give them a gift after already coughing it up minutes before.

I cant blame the D on this one (at least when the game was in reach). look at the facts. Eagles D made key stops in the first half but the offense couldnt take advantage and get the ball rolling. that 2 minute drill with the jackson drop sucked and we should have gotten that first down and at least prevented NO from scoring that last minute touchdown. ball control is key, you must respond when your D gives you opportunities. Ball control is one of Andys biggest weaknesses…

i have to blame Kolb for that poor read and ill advised INT which pretty much put the game out of reach. and dont forget Andys crappy red zone plays where he puts the ball in the hands of a back up QB is a key ingredient for failure, poor – very poor coaching. what do you expect, its andy’s team and kolb is his guy. i thought AJ was a hell of a lot better then kolb.

there were good moments for kolb today and i was admiring how accurate a passer he is. i blame the coaching above all.

by fitzy first on Sep 21, 2009 12:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so the fact that our D gave up 288 passing yards and 133 rushing yards and 41 points means that this wasn’t there fault? How about the fact that they let up 6-13 on third down 8.5 yards per pass and 4.6 per rush.

Kolbs INT was bad, but the D I know would have held them to a FG. Kolb did his job.

thank you.

that what I said, even though we turn the ball over with a short field 2X. In the past, 10 points is the most we give up, not 14. There still is no excuse for the defense allow the NO Offense to march in for 2 straights scores. We had to hold at least 1 or those drives to just a FG. I mean, NO had to drive the ball in the redzone, with a tighter field to work with, this is usually the hardest place to move it, they did it with ease. But we always come out of redzone appearances with FGs, they came out with TDs. Our Defense did not perform yesterday.

It all started with Asante playing off, and allowing those huge 3rd down conversions.

He still needs to work on those interceptions…. At the beginning of the game I will say I would admit I was impressed, he held his own. But everyone is saying that since the D and ST didn’t step up that gives him an excuse to suck at the end? If he is ever gonna be the future or starting QB he needs to learn to play a whole game. He needs to watch his passes foooo shooooo

And let’s not forget…
Desean, Celek, Curtis, Andrews? and a bunch of others got fined 10 grand each for excessive celebration lasty week, and you’re calling out Kolb for being happy he threw a td? Man…I celebrated as much as he did when he scored.

+1 - I thought Kolb was getting a raw deal and said so.

Speaking of haters, JIBTA, The entire defense failed, not just Asante. I don’t think Jack Ikeguana (thats as close a spelling as you’re gonna get) would have fared any better, but I do think he has a future on the team.

its just bad coaching and bad play this week...

it was just bad on special teams and on defence, but at the same time, the defence did hold the saints and the offence didn’t come through…i think its just that the play calling was all messed up…i mean, like was said, didn’t use westbrook enough, no screen passes to him, too much wildcat against a defence that they could have just smashed with true “Eagles” offence, you know?…..too many trick plays and not enough basic Eagles football….just wasn’t our day!…but still, we will smash once the team is back healthy and rollin again…Go EAGLES!!!!!…lol

Kornheiser was annoying. Reminded me of Dennis Miller. I don't need jokes with

my football. I LOVE Gruden as well and Jaws.

I even enjoyed Huge Douglas, as he gave you insight on how a player thinks.

I think it speaks volumes that Aikman actually liked Kolb. He wasn’t a big fan of Donovan. I wonder if he thinks he is the possible future? He is a true expert, some of the fans and radio show guys (Cataldi, Eskin) are uneducated football zombies. I hate that they can’t even explaine what a cover 2 is, and don’t understand wildcat. But they trash Kolb, and Andy regularly with out understanding what they are trying to accomplish. They the talk up McNabb, but trash him the second he fails. Unless your name is Brian Dawkins, no one gets any love on the radio. I love WIP but can’t stomach some of the uneducated trash that goes through the radio waves.

Whodie, Bye Dawk, DKeith, NPK, Foos05, Jason, and even Jibta should be on the air. Not Cataldi and Eskin. I think Eskin is actually Evil Banner.
