Predictions for week 2 against the Saints

Piggy-backing off the "Bold Predictions for the Season" post, here's a few bold (and not so bold predictions for Week 2):

The Big 5:

  • Donovan McNabb will not play at all, but he will be dressed and very vocal on the sidelines mentoring Kolb
  • Leonard Weaver will be a big part of the offense and perform admirably as Kolb's primary safety outlet
  • The defense will give up another lengthy opening drive, but this time they'll hold to a short field goal
  • Either Bunkley or Patterson will get a sack
  • Reid will lean heavily on the running game in this one, and we'll see a lot of McCoy
  • Final Score Prediction: Good guys win this 20-16 in a close one.

Douchebag Announcers Prediction: Aikman will be very critical of Kolb but otherwise be reluctantly supportive of the Eagles. Buck will continue to annoy every time he opens his mouth.

    i love my eagles

….but i gotta level with ya, joe buck and troy aikman are my favorite commentators (nfl)

also i see i big game from the LBs..something tells me that mcdermott will have a lot of LB blitzes particularly from the left side (see jammal brown)

Troy Aikman is at least tolerable in my opinion. Joe Buck….not so much. Every time I see his face I want to hurt something.

I actually like Aikman. I don’t think he’s biased against the birds. Buck on the other hand, he just pisses me off. I like when they show Aikman and Buck standing next to each other. Aikman makes Buck look like a fetus.

    Aikman and Buck

I thought Troy did a very good job during his Eagles games (correct me if I’m wrong but he announced the game in which we trounced Dallas at the end of the season?) and didn’t seem biased at all.

Joe Buck is scum and needs to be fired… NOW.

I like Aikman he is never biased he draws from experiences without annoying me. Standing him next to Joe Buck definitely makes it easier for me to like Aikman.

Joe Buck only has a job because of his father, and how in the fuck he made the jump from baseball to football is beyond me.

    I don't know about this.

I really see this game hitting into the high 20s, more like a 28-24 game. And I’m leaning more towards the Saints mainly due to the Brees pulling a 2nd half gun show. I see it being 17-14 Eagles at half, and Brees putting up 14 unanswered in the fourth after an Eagles score in the third.

My predictions never really come true nor are they close, so let’s hope things don’t change and the Birds do go 2-0 after two weeks.

I think Westbrook and McCoy will have trouble establishing the run early on, but as the game trudges on the Saints run-stoppers will soften up and we will get our offense moving. By then, we will be behind by 7-14 points, so it will be up to our defense to harden up and let us climb back into the drivers seat by the 4th quarter. Finally, the defense will stop Drew Brees on a potential game-winning drive that never comes to fruition.

    Without McNabb

If we win it’ll need to be something like 21-17…. the defense needs to be huge for us.

    Bold Prediction:
Kolb has a reception from Desean running out of the WildCat (Which we will use more this game than ever before)

    Point by point

    Nice post

I’d love to see Donovan McNabb do more active, game-time mentoring of Kolb. I never see him doing that. Maybe I’m missing it.

“Leonard Weaver will be a big part of the offense and perform admirably as Kolb’s primary safety outlet” – It’s what he was hired to do. Will Kolb have the situational awareness to use him?

“The defense will give up another lengthy opening drive, but this time they’ll hold to a short field goal Either Bunkley or Patterson will get a sack.” – They are due. Doesn’t really matter though, as long as they keep collapsing that pocket and forcing the QB out of the tube like a wet weasel.

“Reid will lean heavily on the running game in this one, and we’ll see a lot of McCoy” – That would be great to see.

“Final Score Prediction: Good guys win this 20-16 in a close one.” – As Mr. T once said, “I predict pain.” It’s gonna be a good game.

“Douchebag Announcers Prediction: Aikman will be very critical of Kolb but otherwise be reluctantly supportive of the Eagles. Buck will continue to annoy every time he opens his mouth.” – Again, I predict pain. I’d listen to Merril Reese if there wasn’t that pesky lag.

    To Donovan's defense

The last two times McNabb had the opportunity to mentor Kolb during any relevant game time were last week (when McNabb was pretty much grimacing in pain from the broken rib) and the Baltimore game last year (for which I don’t think McNabb was in any mood to do much of anything after getting benched).

Other than watching Kolb do some clean-up duty here and there, I really don’t think McNabb has had the opportunity to mentor Kolb.

That being said I fully expect McNabb to be all over Kolb on Sunday, otherwise I begin questioning his integrity as a leader.

    My predictions:

    1) McNabb will play, and throw for 250 yds and 3 TDs, 0 Ints, going 14 for 20
    2) BWest runs for an incredible 8 YPC, finishing with 88 yards total on 11 rushes
    3) The D holds the NO offense to 10 for the first 3 quarters, then lets up in a big way for 17 in the 4th, making the game seem closer than it is
    4) DJax scores 2 TDs on offense, 1 in return game
    5) Final score: 35-27 Eagles

The Eagles can win this game with Kolb, even though it will be tough. Play great defense and run the ball and we can win this even if mcnabb doesn’t play. If we can pull this one out, we will start the season at least 5-0.

by eaglesinmd on Sep 18, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

The Saints are going to destroy us. Kolb is going to have to take his lumps. The Saints know the secret to defeating JJ/McDermott’s defense; dinking and dunking. Jeremy Shockey and Lance Moore will likely lead the team in receptions and the ToP will be a vast advantage to the Saints.

I have it as 34-20 Saints. What I hope for is that no one on the Eagles gets injured in this game, a game which by all accounts is pretty futile if Kolb starts. Brees can kill any defense; Kolb would probably struggle against a Pac 10 defense.

Are YOU an Eagles fan? Did you watch our defense last year? You can defeat the blitz with quick tosses, slants, and looking for the TE. Even with Stewart Bradley in the lineup, the Cardinals had an answer for our blitz on every play. While Fitzgerald had 159 yards in that game, most of it came on one reception. We could not stop them on third down.

High powered offenses will be successful against us because there will always be free receivers underneath. Our LB coverage is terrible. They are excellent against the run, but will let just about any WR run behind them. Our defense is strong but it has a weakness and that weakness can be exploited by a team like this, and it will.

Being an Eagles fan doesn’t mean calling every other team a joke and expecting us to go 16-0 and score 50 points a game. I don’t know how anyone expects us to win this week. I don’t even know why I gave the Eagles 20 points in my projection.. with Kolb under center the Eagles have scored a grand total of 0 points.

by ZorkNemesis on Sep 18, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

In addition I think you guys are way too reactionary. Before the season started everyone thought our defense was going to be terrible and our offensive line was going to be pathetic, and now everyone thinks that we’re invincible because of one game. Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe the Panthers are not a great team this year? They have injuries, they have a confused QB, they have aging receivers. That team has alternated between 11-5 and 5-11 every season. Look at their season by season records this decade: 2000 – 7-9, 2001 – 1-15, 2002 – 7-9, 2003 – 11-5, 2004 – 7-9, 2005 – 11-5, 2006 – 8-8, 2007 – 7-9. They have not had back to back winning seasons in the short history of their franchise.

I don’t know why you guys think that that game can be applied to just any game. The Panthers’ success depends on their ability to run the ball, and we have a great rushing defense. The Saints succeed by slinging the ball all over the field, and it’s not just one guy, they spread it around. 8 different people caught a pass from Brees last week. They are not some one dimensional team like the Panthers. Yes, the Panthers have Steve Smith, but Steve Smith can only do what he does when the playaction works. The Saints DONT NEED to run the ball to win games. They could take every snap from shotgun and probably still score a lot of points.

I don’t think I’m being defeatist, I’m just not expecting Kevin fucking Kolb to keep up with Drew Brees. If Kolb even gets us to 200 yards of offense I’ll be amazed.

by ZorkNemesis on Sep 18, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever you think of McDermott's D

the fact remains that Brees looked great against what last year was the worst defense in the league.

I liked Brees ever since he played for Purdue, and thought the Chargers were crazy for letting him walk. But he’s better against crappy defenses than against good ones.

Last year, his worst games were against TB, Washington, Chicago, and Minn. What did these teams have in common? All had good to great defenses last year. His only really top game against a defense which was even average was against Green Bay. The rest of his great numbers last year were against teams like Oakland, Denver, Detroit and San Diego. What do these teams have in common? Really, really bad defenses!

    See these links for backup:
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/splits?playerId=2580&sYear=2008
    http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef2008

I know making the point that QBs do better against bad defenses than good ones isn’t rocket science, but if you think the Eagles D is better than average, you cannot think Brees will march up and down the field on us.

I don’t know why you guys think that that game can be applied to just any game.

Ok but the fact that Brees threw 6 TDs against the Lions means he is going to pick us apart?

You are right the Panthers and Saints are different teams but just because one team is a run heavy team and one is pass heavy doesn’t mean they can beat us. Bell had 143 rushing yards against the Lions you don’t think that helped open the passing game? Do you think we will give up that many rushing yards? Look at the whole game not just pieces my friend.

Saints depend on the long ball, the Eagles don’t give up the long ball. Dink and Dunk is not how the Saints win games they had 3 guys with over 19 yards per reception I doubt they repeat that.

I don’t think I’m being defeatist, I’m just not expecting Kevin fucking Kolb to keep up with Drew Brees. If Kolb even gets us to 200 yards of offense I’ll be amazed.

First off I always think my team has a chance to win. I’m not delusional I just have faith in my team. Picking another team to defeat your own isn’t a defeatist but it is a cop out. Now if your team loses you can play it off and if they win you can run your mouth. Saying they will win might mean you have to eat crow but who the fuck cares that is why they are my team.

If Stafford can put up 205 through the air then Kolb will be fine. The NO defense picked on a rookie who IMHO wasn’t good enough to be the number 1 overall pick but was gifted it. I’m not worried as much as most people are about Kevin Kolbs ability to manage our high powered offense.

The hell the saints are going to destroy us. no one is going to destroy us this season, because we are one of the best if not the best team in the league. we have one of the best defenses in the league, without question. mcnabb has gone down before and the eagles have been able to cope with it. kolb doesnt even have to play that well for us to win, as long as we run the ball.

    Good Answer Z

The Cards tore us up with the short passes and Drew Brees is by far the best Qb in the league. I love DMc but when brees is hot! Also I recall the aints beating us the last 2x we played 24-17, the second time with Jeff. I recall Akers missing a kick or 2. I think Kolb has the tools, lets see him use them to keep Drew off the field using the same gameplan we used against the Patriots 2 years ago by not allowing the Saints offense on the field!

the last time we played the Saints was in 2007 we won 38-23 and McNabb was a much better QB in that game than Brees.

    well yea....

    McNabb.

The Eagles defense will keep them in the game, but the point is Kolb blows and unless he finally shows why the team thinks he’s the future at QB (not unheard of, the Saints D is pretty suck), Brees and the O will score points.

If the Eagles had McNabb, I don’t think anyone would be on the Saints. It would have been a good game anyway cuz the Saints are pretty strong, but I doubt anyone would be picking them to win.

Without McNabb, the team is not as good overall. You’re gonna have trouble scoring.

The defense is probaby gonna be on the field a lot and that more than likely will take its toll.

Kinda like how Im looking at the Giants game tonight, if they win you can chalk it up to the fact they are a great overall team because there are so many injuries. If the Eagle overcome McNabb being out/not close to 100%, the Eagles are just that good.

But if they lose, well the team had a ton of injuries/ one big one in the case of McNabb. Tho…..losing to the Cowboys is just plain torture.
