If the Saints win...how will go down?

Saints fan here...not meaning to invade your space or anything, but I'm curious how y'all see this game unfolding. Obviously there is a chance of either team winning; but whatever the outcome, there's got to be a good reason for it. So if the Saints win...what will be that reason?

I'll offer this first: if the Eagles win, it will probably be because their coverages confused Drew Brees into seeing things that weren't there and throwing multiple picks. I'm a big Brees fan, and think he's probably the best player we've ever had (sorry, Rickey Jackson), but he does have a tendency to be up-and-down from one week to the next. On the road, in a hostile environment, facing a dynamic defense, he may have one of his down games.

But for the Eagles to win, you'll also need to have an offense for four quarters. Can your running game dominate? Can Kolb (I'm assuming here) pick up the slack in the passing department if the running game falters?

Anyway...with all due respect, if we win, how do you see it happening?

Well brees is good but he isnt 6TD's in a game good

he was playing against detroit. He is more of a 2TD a game QB with the occasional 3TD.

Against our secondary you also have to take into account that we have 3 probowl quality players in Brown, Mikell and Asante. Harris is a rookie and will be viewed as the weak link unless he makes some good plays. He was also a ball hawk in college and can hit which makes eagles fans pretty happy lol.. If brees rushes the ball and tries to make something happen we’ve got the D to make him pay for it…

Then our DL and LB’s are going to most likely get pressure. Your OL is good but Our DL is just better and our LB’s are always hungry. If they rattle Brees we will most likely cause alot of Turnovers…

As for your “offense will need too play…” comment. Your D isnt exactly scary in any way. We should be able to do whatever we want here..

If you guys do infact win though it will be a very close game.

oh and I forgot to mention your running

game is pretty much non-existant. Reggie cannot stay healthy and Pierre is hurt.. And the bell guy scares me about as much as a box of care bears…

Shockeys also hurt so there goes your TE making big plays.. our D will be all over him.

I discussed how our Secondary is prolly the best

Brees is going to face all year, how our DL and LB’s are going to be everywhere and how there D and running game are non-existant…

I pretty much implied that the only way they can win is if brees does it all. But since your obviously the one who failed 10th grade english you wouldnt know by context clues what someone was implying.

No offense to your team

But, there’s only one player I see on the Saints that can hit us good: Drew Brees. That man is a beast.

WITH THAT SAID, he’s your ONLY weapon. You take him away, you take everything away. He’s, basically, your Brian Westbrook. As Jake Delhomme saw, our defense will NOT let up. Not even for a measly 6 points that would mean nothing to the game (see the end of the Panthers game).

Honestly, this is probably my favorite game until we start playing within the division. It’ll be a classic, I’ll tell you.

I guess that would mean

that in order for the Saints to win, we have to shut down Westbrook?

Brees is certainly the cog that makes that O go, but they are a good cohesive unit. They are hard to cover because there is little dropoff in receiving ability between Brees’ 1st through 5th option. Respect for the passing game also opens up the run for them.

This is a huge challenge for McDermott. He must be very careful with his blitzes, as Brees reads D’s very quick and is good at hitting the check down. Sean really needs to pick and choose his spots. Also, the Eagles D needs to hammer Drew when they get the chance. It may be worth an early 15 yarder just to get a good, solid hit on him.

For a week 2 game, this is certainly a good matchup. Let’s face it, that Panthers team was not the same team from last years regular season. While the Eagles D deserves their credit, Jake was just plain awful. The Saints were in a similar situation last week with the Lion’s D. Drew seemed to have 2-3 guys wide open on every play. Eagles D vs Saints O will certainly establish the true identitys of these units, and show who is for real.

The Saints D also has an immense challenge after going against a team who is not only winless in their last 18 games, but also starting a rookie QB.

I know my fellow birds fans will disagree, but I pick Saints by a TD if Kolb starts. With a healthy McNabb, I would give it to Philly.

Fair analysis

Sometimes when the two stud units, in this case Saints O and Eagles D, are facing off, it’s sometimes the other side that determines the outcome.

I think the Eagles O has the potential to put some points up on the Saints D if the Eagles call a good game that has Kolb getting it to playmakers and managing the game. It also might be time to buckle up and run the ball.

Somebody somewhere said the Saints aren’t all that good on special teams either.

But if the saints do beat us i think Reggie Bush will have a big game, yeah yeah i know he had a couple fumbles week 1 but straight up the man is DANGEROUS with the ball in his hands1!!!!!! Also if i remember correct , didnt he kill us in the playoff game after Sheldon killed him. Gotta give anyone credit that could come back and play a productive game after taking one of the sickest hits i have ever seen

The guy is an x factor on their team. Yeah, he isn’t an up the middle rb, but split him out and he causes match up problems. He isn’t a bust because if memory serves me right, he did have an impact on certain games. He was injured last year and injuries happen to the best of them. Do I think he is worth his 2nd overall pick and worth the money? I’m not sure, and for the record I think Mario Williams was the correct number 1 overall. But is he a bust? Not at all. The guy is still playing and we still have to game plan for him. That is not a bust.

He's a huuuge threat to run punts back.

He ran two back against Minny last year and was on his way to a third when he hit a slippery patch on the field. That’s where he scares me the most. I’d also hate to see him get the ball and end up in the open field against a linebacker. He still has plenty moves and is really, really fast.

For where he was selected I’d call him a bust, but he still has value and can still burn teams. You can write him off, but I’m guessing McDermott isn’t so stupid as to do the same.

We are so lucky to have you!

I can’t think of a better way to open the season here at home, than blasting out the best offense so far this season with the ’Jim’s Ghost’ defense. Our opportunity is fantastic. The Eagles – in one game – can become the 2009 ‘defensive team to beat’ after the performance of the Saints last week. If we stop NO Sunday, NOBODY can call this defense a fluke, beginner luck, or whatever. They will get their props.

The Eagles also have a great opportunity to go WildBird (screw wildcats, we’re eagles) all over the field. What a great week to test it out.

How can we lose? Dude, we are the Eagles. The Philadelphia EAGLES. We can find a million ways to lose.

Can your running game dominate?

In all honesty, we could be a top five rushing team. We have one of the best run blocking LT in the league in Jason Peters (remember, no one was bitching about his run blocking, just questioning his pass blocking). And rest of our offensive line is just fill with giant ass dudes. We have one of the most dynamic running back with Brian Westbrook and a young up-and-coming stud in LeSean McCoy. Along with that, we have one of the best fullback in the game with Weaver.

We could be a great rushing team.

Except Andy Reid likes to pass. 35-40x a game.

I just wanted to remind everyone that we had something like 185 rushing last week against a good defense. If we can keep moving the ball down field and control the clock, the saints wont have much time to TRY and score all those points. This game isnt about kolb. It shoulb be on our running game.

I’m glad Kolb’s first (and hopefully only) game this season is against the Saints D. It’s much better then him being thrown in against the Giants or somebody with an impressive D. I like his odds against this defense. And honestly, that’s going to be the difference maker. If Kolb can put together some drives and put up some points against a mediocre D that he’s actually had time to gameplan against, we should win. Our D vs their O is just going to be an all out battle though. Can’t wait.

by Q27 on Sep 17, 2009 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

True

Kolb doesn’t need to win it, he just needs to not lose it…maintain a few drives, get a few first downs, and let the running game do the rest…

THEN, we get McNabb back…and we’ll be rolling!

If the Saints win...

It will be because of poor game planning or poor QB execution of the game plan. The Eagles need to come out, rely on Westbrook, McCoy and Weaver to run the ball and catch a lot of short passes to move the chains and control the clock. Over the past few years, we’ve had mixed results in executing a good game plan. Garcia was able to do it over an 8 game stretch in ‘06 while throwing for 1310 yards, 10 TD and only 2 Int’s. 2007 was kind of rough with Feeley in there for 3 games, passing for 681 yards, 5 TD and 8 Int’s. We all know what happened to Kolb when he came in for the 2nd half of the Baltimore game last year, but that shouldn’t be considered because game planning was not a factor there.

If last week was any indication of how our defense is looking this year, your offensive line, and subsequently Drew Brees, are going to be in for a long day. For our sake, I hope it wasn’t a fluke and this game is essentially a matchup of the Saints D and Eagles O. Tom foolery (Def: Wreaking Havoc/causing general chaos/shennanigans, taking the piss, etc… ) will undoubtedly be part of the Eagles’ grand plan.

in order for the saints to win this game......

the saints will have to force turnovers. i don’t see brees throwing 6 TDs. the saints d-line will have to make our o-line flinch….but all kolb has to do is not make mistakes. throw the ball 10-15 times, let our run game do the rest. also….bold prediction….macho harris gets his first pick this week.

The only drive Brees will see the base defense is the first one. Jim Johnson always sees how the other team prepared for them before dialing up his complicated blitzes, and from what I saw last week, McDermett does the same thing.

3 things to lookout for if you a Saints fan:

1. One of the eagles favorite things to do is to bring pressure up the A gaps. It is usually the fastest route to the cornerback, and also one of the hardest to block if the RB has to pickup a blitzer in the middle because he has to go around the QB taking his drop.

2. It’s one thing to try and confuse Brees, and a whole other thing to try and confuse the offensive center. The Eagles will show blitz in the A gap, but that doesn’t mean that is where they will be blitzing from. By showing the blitz in the A gap, the center is going to have to call for help for one of the gaurds, who will have to block the other A gap. The OT will then have to slide to block the b gap, leaving the DE either 1 on 1 with a TE (often times the RB will chip block in these situations), or 1 on 1 with a RB. If the center plans for this, but then the guys in the A gap don’t bltiz, the O line now has to scramble to block on the outside, where the eagles have small, quick DEs and LBs bringing pressure.

3. The best way to confuse Brees is to switch up who is covering the hot route. If the Eagles are able to bring pressure, and get to Brees a few times, he will start looking for where the blitz is coming from and throw to the hot route in that direction…which usually leaves a TE or RB in the open field with room to run. In the past, the Eagles have shown blitz on one side, but then had someone you wouldn’t expect to be covering, like the DE cover the TE hot route. If the QB gets rid of the ball in a hurry, this usually can lead to a pick for one of the big men.

The reason I point out these three tactics is to show its not only about confusing Brees, but also about confusing the O-line.

That is some excellent info

That also explains how the Panthers looked like contenders in their first drive, and charlatans for the rest of the game.

I’d still point out, though, that Sean Payton knows the Eagles’ tendencies backwards and forwards from his days at New York and Dallas…plus the three games we’ve played against you in the last three years. I don’t think there will be anything in theory that the Saints won’t be prepared for…but in fact they might not face the challenge very well. A lot of teams don’t.

To beat the Birds, the gameplan against Minny last year might work.

Prioritize stopping the run and make Kolb beat you. If Kolb proves competent, the Saints could be in trouble because we have a crazy number of weapons. But if Kolb struggles and the Saints can get a turnover or two, they could win. Also, like in the Minnesota game last year, Bush having a big day returning punts would go a long way to help you out. Whether they are TDs or just big returns. The Eagles D is so incredibly better than the Lions D it isn’t even funny, but I still think Brees and the RBs put up some points (probably not 45 though, sorry). The Saints D wasn’t bad last week (waaaay better than last year), but it didn’t have to win the game for you guys. The D (and special teams) will probably be asked to win this game.

Personally I don’t see it happening, but considering we don’t really know how improved the Saints D is and we don’t really know that Kolb can be any good, you never know.

by NOLACuse on Sep 18, 2009 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

This will be the first time that Kolb has

had the chance to prepare with the 1st team. He will not be put in a situation where he has to win the game(hopefully)… Our OL should destroy the saints DL, there should be no compition up there.

Our run game should be established early to allow Kolb to run some PA and help to kinda keep the DB’s thinking run.
