The Keys to Sunday's game
First I just wanted to say that I could not have imagined a better week one, aside from donovan getting hurt. Sean McDermott showed that he knows what he is doing and was groomed very well by JJ. One of the things I was thinking about during the game was if they were playing defense like that with Gaither in the middle, how good could they have been with Stew in the middle? Before the game at carolina I thought Desean was gonna be a stud this year, after the game i think he is gonna be a MONSTER. He is so versatile and can hurt defenses and score points in so many ways.
This sunday is going to be very exciting. Our first home game of the year against the highpowered offense of the saints. Our defense will have the task of trying to stop arguably the best quaterback in the league, Drew Brees, and our offense will have to put points on the board (likely) without Donovan. It's gonna be a very exciting game that could go either way. There are a couple of Key things the eagles will need to do to secure a victory.
1. Get Pressure on Drew Brees
There is no question that Brees is the engine that makes the Saints offense go. We need to pressure him consistently to prevent him from getting in a rhythm and marching down the field. The Saints will be without their Pro Bowl Left Tackle Jammal as he is not expected to play until October 25th at Miami (according to profootballtalk.com). Backup Jermon Bushrod will start at LT and that definitely makes Trent Cole a happy man come sunday. I think Sean will do a great job calling the plays and dialing up the blitzes.
2. Performance of the Offensive and Defensive Lines
I think the performance of the O-line will be the most important factor to getting a win. With Donovan battling through the rib fracture, it is more than likely that Kolb will start. The O-line needs to create a clean pocket to let him go through his progressions, make the right decisions, and most importantly keep him off his back. It will be a long day on offense if they cant give kevin time. One of the factors to whether or not Kevin will have time to make his reads is the ruling on the Starcaps situation regarding New Orleans Defensive Ends Charles Grant and Will Smith, Kolb should have all the time he needs if they are unable to play.
This relates to what i said before about Trent Cole. The D-line needs to get consistent pressure on Brees, collapse the pocket, and keep him out of a rythm. I think its safe to say that Sean will try to exploit Jermon Bushrod at LT with Cole going against him and blitzes to that side, but it isn't just the Trent Cole show anymore. Bunkley and patterson are pro bowl caliber DT's will have to come up big by getting pressure up the middle, flushing Brees out of the pockets for Cole and Abiamiri and the rest of the defense.
3. Ball Control
I expect to see a large dose of Westbrook and McCoy on sunday to take some of the pressure off Kolb. We need to run the ball effectively to keep our drives going and to set up play action. The last thing we can afford to have are 3 n' outs and turnovers. We dont want to give Brees anymore oppurtunities to score than we have to, its also important to avoid those two things because it would be a confidence booster for Kevin to know that he can lead the offense down the field for a score. He hasnt exaclty been impressive in the chances we have given him during the regular season, but this sunday (if he is starting) will be the first true test of what he can do. He'll be taking all the reps for a full week with the first team in practice which will allow him to get on the same page as everyone else and potentially be more successful.
4. Stop the Run
Although the Saints do most of their damage through the air, Mike bell had 28 carries for 143 yards on sunday against the Lions. I don't expect them to have that type of production against us at all but if we can shut down their running game and force them into passing situations i believe our secondary will defend well and frustrate Brees. The defense played the run pretty well allowing 86 yards and one TD against Carolina but there were a bunch of missed tackles and we cant afford to do that this sunday.

I think our secondary will be great again..
against the ‘Aints… I would LOVE to Garcia start but it won’t happen.. but if I see Kolb struggling early I HOPE we throw Garcia in there.
Another thing that I’m thinking is that the loss of JJ is fueling this defense along with all the critizism it has gotten all offseason and I’m ready to see this defense come out at home and lay the wood and get constant pressure on Brees and win this game.
A critique from a Saints fan
For the most part, I agree with the broad strokes of your strategy; but you’ve got it wrong in some of the details.
1. Pressuring any quarterback helps, but Brees is the best in the business right now. He knows where his guys are going to be, he knows how they’ll adjust their routes under pressure, and he can go through four progressions correctly faster than Kolb can go through two. The key is going to be not so much getting pressure, but doing it in such a way that it disguises your coverages. Brees is aggressive and confident, and if he thinks he sees an opening where there is in fact a linebacker lurking, you can definitely score some picks.
2. Grant and Smith are not our best pass rushers. Bobby McCray outperformed both last season, and McCray and Hargrove looked good in preseason. What’s more, Gregg Williams can also find creative ways to bring pressure. It’s true that the performance of both offensive lines will probably be the key to this game; but I seriously doubt that either team relies on its down linemen to get to the quarterback unassisted.
3. It’s true that you need to be able to control the ball; but the Saints have been pretty good so far at stopping the run, and it goes back to last season. They shut down Adrian Peterson better than anyone last year—he had a 1.5 average against us. Of course, we still lost due to other factors. If Kolb plays instead of McNabb, and if he’s as ineffective as everyone assumes he will be, it’s going to be tough for Westbrook and McCoy to pick up the slack.
4. The key to shutting down the run against the Saints, surprisingly enough, is going to be shutting down the inside. Guards Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks are our best linemen, and either of them can blow his opposite number off the line (especially Nicks, who is a mauler). If the inside running game occupies too much of your linebacking corps’ attention, Jeremy Shockey may have the game of his career catching passes between the linebackers and safeties.
For the Eagles, the real key may be special teams. The Saints looked horrible last week; and given our special teams problems under Payton, I doubt it gets fixed in a week. We have a good punter, but not a good punt coverage unit; we have a good kicker, but not a good field goal unit. If you can exploit the Saints’ kicking game, win the field position battle, and maybe score some special teams points, you will have more than just a good chance: you could blow us out.

Classy,
Except I COMPLETELY disagree with the inside of your O-Line being able to “blow his opposite” off the line…you’re referring to Bunkley and Patterson who are also the best in the business…think Jacobs and Eli bto 4th and 1 in the playoffs

BLITZ , BLITZ, BLITZ.................
And then for good measure……..BLITZ somemore. I trust our secondary enuff to blitz the hell outta their Offense.
Also its obvious we have to use the same gameplan we had in the first victory over the gints last year where we controlled the shit out of the clock and TOP. 20 carries for Westy and 15 for Mccoy, and then 2 each for buck and the weave. This is def a winnable game but to say its gonna be tuff would be a understatment.
It will be tough
If McNabb weren’t injured, I would say this was an Eagles win. I still think the birds win if that defense plays like last week. Other than that first drive, they were just all over the field. If they repeat that, they’ll carry the team (don’t think it will be 38-10 though)
Its tough to measure the saints because they played the lions in week one. Granted they played great but that was against the league’s worst team. The saints get a break if Kolb starts because he’s unproven, although the saints defense is only mediocre so he’s probably going to make a few plays. Westbrook and Shady will need to shoulder the extra load.
Prediction: If the Eagles play a clean game and make the saints earn everything, Philly’s defense will carry them to a close win.
haha i remember.............
when the eagles scored like a million points agianst the lions a couple years ago while wearing those horrible jerzeys, only to come back and lay a egg against the g-men the next week. So yeah even tho the Saints are a force to be reckoned with, those 6 TDs by Brees are kinda questionable. I guess wat im tryin 2 say is good teams should embarass shitty teams. The saints cant put to much stock into their win just like we cant put to much into destroying a QB who i beleive is finished, however the Panthers are much better than the Lions

I agree with you, but I think it was the rams that we put a beatdown on….

Rams were last year...
He’s talking about the first game of the 07 season.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
im pretty sure it wasn't the first game
wasn’t the first game the packer when andy “showed” everyone you don’t need real punt returner.
It was either the second or third game. the game where curtis got half of his stats..

No it was lions we beat down. I think the score was 56- to something, this game took place in 07 where Curtis caught 3 td passes from donny and westbrook ran all over them. If saint fans think brees is gonna throw 6 tds on our secondary they r out of their minds, I love brees, but the man is going to have to do work if they expect to win. With that said I still think eagles win, we slaughtered the panthers who lost only 1 home game last year and shut down the best rushing attack from a year ago.
Ps. If there any spelling errors srry I’m typing this on my phone.
I feel kinda bad for Kolb to have his first start in the NFL in Philly. We are notorious for booing our team if they arent playing well and that stuff might affect how Kolb’s mindset during the game, especially if he gets off to a slow start. I can already hear the chants for Garcia coming after a Kolb fumble or interception.
"I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care. "
kolb
Kolb has a slow start, he’s not making it to the end of the game anyway. I dont think Andy will let this one get away if it’s close, he’ll put in Garcia.
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

he let the ravens game get away
granted it turned out beautifully but he still let it get away when the score was really close.

Fortunately, I think Kolb is determined to prove himself. He will only be fueled by the boo’s to do better. At least thats what vibe I get from him. Hes had a rough couple games when he went in and he will do his best. But I don’t really see him making it the whole way through the game either. He might have a couple plays but I see Garcia making a small impact as well.
In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: Hit the line hard.
-Theodore Roosevelt
I'm just concerned about the defense
Clearly, the Eagles offense is a mess without McNabb. I don’t trust Kolb right now, and Garcia needs some time. I just want to see if the defense can hold up.
