Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Andy Reid has just announced that, due to continuing back problems, right tackle Shawn Andrews will miss week one's matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Backup Winston Justice has gotten the nod to start.

I was hoping we move Stacy to RT, and start MJG at RG. Umenyura (sp?) all over again?

I think it's his heart...

Not his back. I’m no longer interested in retaining #73’s services past this season… And from this point on, Stacy Andrews will now be referred to as “Andrews,” and the other guy’s name will not be spoken.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

This is stupid

Andy better tell us soon what the hell the deal is with andrews im getting pissed, hes always keeping things out of the fans reach

by rainvillefromottawa on Sep 11, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

He told us...

73’s back flared up, he didn’t practice yesterday or today due to aggravating it at practice on Wednesday. He will be out on Sunday and Winston Justice will start in his place.

What more do you want to know? How many tampons 73 uses per day? How heavy his purse is?

This man needs to be cut

I don’t care how good he was, he could be a cross between Anthony Munoz and Larry Allen, doesn’t matter because his HEART and his HEAD are not committed to football, and it’s becoming disruptive at this point. The NFL is a cutthroat league and the Eagles need to take off the kid gloves when it comes to this guy.

cut? how will that help the team? when he plays, hes a monster. its quite possible that he wont play another snap in the NFL, but its also possible he gets healthy halfway through and helps us win a championship (but im not banking on it). you want to cut him and officially have justice as the starter? at least we can hope for the future as of now

by ego on Sep 11, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

“when he plays”? HE DOESN’T PLAY! Cutting Shawn Andrews (and bringing back Runyan) would…

1) Save $ and a roster spot

2) Find out right now what we have in Justice – the guy was a first round pick, if he’s really as big of a stiff as he looks, we need to figure this out before we waste 6 years on this guy.

3) Send a dang message to everyone that just because you’re an Andy Reid favorite son doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want and not face consequences.

Potential never once pancaked a DE in the NFL – it’s about results and this guy isn’t giving you ANYTHING. Bye, bye Shawn!

wasn't

justice a 2nd round pick?

RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.

Redemption

If I’m a player and I’m in Winston Justice’s shoes I am absolutely salivating at the opportunity to redeem myself against one of the better DE’s in the game. If he’s able to neutralize Peppers it would be the first step in much needed turnaround.

That being said, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

As far as Andres goes – Eff him. The only “beasting” he’ll be doing this weekend is Milwaukee’s Best.

I offically want Runyan back

I had actually agreed with the idea of moving on, but we need the old warrior back if for only for a season (maybe even a few games).

We work with Runyan and Andrews (when/if he ever plays) at RT this season then go into the draft looking for another OT (I’m starting to think Peters might make a better RT anyway if we could draft a LT)

by Smallbugger on Sep 11, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

It appears Buffalo has a really strong interest. I don’t think we get him now even if we want him.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

Justice > Runyan, Runyan was bad last year and after surgery and another year, he’s only going to get worse.

by Team Serbia on Sep 11, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Runyan was bad last year???

Yeah he might not have been as good as he’s capable, but the OL allowed a franchise low 23 sacks last year and we made it to the NFC CG…

Tell me how you do that and you end the season as a top 10 offense with a bad RT starting every single game?

Nonsense. Runyan, hurt, is better than a lot of people in the league.

The Steelers won a Super Bowl with one of the worst offensive lines in the entire league, fyi.

by ZorkNemesis on Sep 11, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Your point?

The Eagles had a GOOD o-line last year… 23 sacks allowed… with Jon Runyan.

That’s my only point.

by Smitty2K3 on Sep 11, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

They absolutely did not have a good offensive line last year. Has last year already faded from the public consciousness? Do you not remember every short yardage play? Do you not remember McNabb running for his life week after week? The injuries to Andrews and MJG? The best players on the line last year were Jamaal Jackson and Todd Herremanns. McNabb had to do more scrambling last year than in any of the past 4 seasons. That they only gave up 23 sacks says more about McNabb’s abilities than it does about the line. They could not win at the point of attack, could not hold their ground for longer than 2 seconds, and had trouble even with 4 man rushes. Their YPC was the 8th worst in all of football. No lanes, no protection, no push. It was the root of all of their problems.

The Steelers had an even worse line (although Big Ben largely got sacked because of his refusal to quit on plays). Despite being a smashmouth team, their YPC was 4th worst in all of football. And both teams managed to win games mostly because of their defensive pressure, red zone defense, and turnovers. The Eagles offense ranks high every season, because they enjoy a sizable ToP advantage, they throw the ball deep and often, and they have explosive playmakers. But that doesn’t mean they had a great line. I can even point out other offenses that fired on all cylinders that had poor offensive lines, such as Cincinatti in 05, San Diego in the heyday of LdT when they had an absolutely atrocious line, the Cardinals’ comedically bad offensive lines of the last 5 years, the Texans of any year of their existence, and now the preseason success that Cutler has had despite no skill players and no line.

The Eagles certainly didn’t get to the NFCCG because of their offense. I would say that their offense was haphazard and flukish all throughout December and January. The screen to Westbrook against Minnesota was nearly an aborted play. The Westbrook rushing TD against NYG was the result of him having to wait 2 seconds behind the line for a lane to open. They largely won against Minnesota and NYG because of the defense, and they lost to Arizona because the defense failed— the one game that the offense actually DID come together (and it wasn’t until the second half).

Oh good. At least I wasn’t the only one watching the Eagles last year. Apparently people forget important details like our crappy offensive line during the offseason.

I believe this forgetfulness happened during the fifth game of the Phillies 10 game winning streak back in July.

Well this just goes down as shock of the year. Along with Brett Favre unretiring, politicians philandering, and players playing.

by joetimek on Sep 11, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

I dont know why...

But I really think Justice is going to do great tomorrow. He looked very much improved in the preseason and I think he’ll do what he needs to Sunday. Am I happy to see him go up against Peppers? Not at all but I do believe he holds his own out there.

by IgglesFanDeployd on Sep 11, 2009 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

I think the same people who think Osi is a dominant defensive player because of those 6 sacks also think Justice is a bust because of the same 6 sacks. Neither player is as good/bad as that one game suggests.

I hope this year both players regress towards the mean.

by UnclaimedFright on Sep 11, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think Justice is going to do great tomorrow.

I do hope Justice does great in practice tomorrow, but I’d actually prefer that he does better on Sunday.

by Smitty2K3 on Sep 11, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know that he does great...

but I bet he plays a lot better than we’re giving him credit for. You can’t hold one game against a guy for the rest of his career. He owned up to his mistakes, has done everything he can to improve and is out to prove a point. THAT’S a guy I want starting, not some heartless p*ssy who spends more time making youtube music videos than he does the job he gets pain millions for. Trade Shawn Andrews to Buffalo for a 3rd round pick.

by rharris0127 on Sep 11, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Now we know....

where our #1 pick is going next year. Cut "whats his face’ after the season if this continues. In fact, if the eagles want to put him on IR, just cut him instead and make room for a new young face to hopefully contribute….just gonna have to try and help out Justice with chips from the backs and te’s and sliding protection all year.

It should be about over from the "Big Kid"

I don’t know, but I don’t see how he needs soo long to heal. I don’t think he wants to play. Last year with his depression, and now with his phantom back problem, I just don’t think this dude even cares.

I am not one to mess with a dude because of his mental problems but I think he needs to show more. Until then, he will be called “The Big Pussy”, or someone else can find a better name.

about Justice's reputation

Don’t we get sick of people calling McNabb “mcpuke” and saying all he does is puke in big games? So why do you guys think that what happened to Winston Justice in one game two years ago is going to define his career? If he can play to the potential that he showed at USC, the Eagles would have a punishing 24 year old RT that they can lock up and have installed for a decade. If he can’t, then the Eagles can move on. But I want to know.

If the Eagles have to draft a tackle next year, the odds of him getting in the starting lineup in week 1 are relatively low to begin with, so I think it’s imperative that SOMEONE step into that role as soon as possible, whether it’s Stacy Andrews or Winston Justice.

by ZorkNemesis on Sep 11, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

“So why do you guys think that what happened to Winston Justice in one game two years ago is going to define his career?”

This is a good point. This is his chance to step up and make us forget about that game. I really hope he has made the strides necessary to succeed now.

I wouldn’t mind seeing them move Stacy to the RT position and replacing him at guard with Cole or MJG. I was surprised they didn’t experiment with this in the training camp (that I know of, anyway).

Smack it up, flip it, rub it down... OH NOOOooo!

His first real test. I, honestly, can’t wait.

It’s kind of like a retest…

by andyreidswaistline on Sep 11, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone needs a re-test every once in awhile. It took me twice to pass gen. chem…

by Serk on Sep 11, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree but it would be like taking the retest after 8+ years of gen chem classes in HS and college…

by andyreidswaistline on Sep 12, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

ALSO

The odds of the Eagles getting an elite tackle through the draft or a trade next year are pretty low. They are likely to finish somewhere around picks 20-32. The elite linemen are usually gone beyond the top ten. Even the headcases like Andre Smith were taken early.

They’re likely going to have to find their franchise RT solution within their own roster.

Im new here. But should he be cut?? that really dosent help anything

by jjrome on Sep 11, 2009 5:51 PM EDT reply actions

cutting him opens up a roster spot for someone who’s heart is actually focused on playing football

Depression

I am begining to agree with the idea of moving on as a BUSINESS decision. However, I am still uncomfortable moving on because of mental issues. I’ve dealt with depression. When it has a grip on you, you are almost helpless. Knock the back pain all you want, just leave the depression out of it.

insider source tells me...

the big kid is dealing with the realities of being gay and he (nor the rest of the locker room) know how to deal with it and be totally comfortable. it must be hard to be gay in the black community, but as an athlete, it’s magnified even further.

yup. you read right. shawn andrews might be gay, further contributing to and complicating the overall situation. that’s certainly not helping his mental state right now, though i’d imagine the genuine reason for his absence is physical.

just tellin you what i heard. hope he gets things figured out so he can get back to pancaking defenders on our way to the super bowl!
