No Shawn Andrews.... Jon Runyan ??

No Shawn Andrews in Philly Posted by Mike Florio on September 11, 2009 12:05 PM ET Reports are coming in, Twitter-style, regarding the status of Eagles right tackle Shawn Andrews,

Per guys like Sheil Kapadia of philly.com and Adam Caplan of Scout.com, Andrews is not at practice on Friday.  He also missed practice Thursday, due to his ongoing back problems.

The development likely means that Andrews won't play Sunday at Carolina.

And maybe it means that the Eagles will get Jon Runyan signed in time for kickoff

I have been saying this for the last 2 months

Sign Runyan- Andrews is a head case, no more investing in this guy
We need our Seasond Vet back. Big Jon is the way to go

I dunno about you but. . .

Shawn Andrews is starting to get under my skin. We have given this guy every excuse possible that he needs in order to get him back on the field. We gave him his time of depression, we catered to his every need if injured and we even went out and signed his brother because A) His damn good and B) to help Shawn get his head back in the game and play for us once again.

But after I heard about the news that his back “flared up” when he said he is “back baby” and will let his “game do the talking”. . . . . .i dunno. . . im just getting skepitcal of this guy.

We need his dominance on the o-line in order for us to be the most dynamic team in the NFL. Maybe im just getting frustrated but I can’t stand this kind of “I’m playing. . .oops im hurt again” BS.

GO EAGLES and show how good we are by taking down the pussy Panthers!!!!

Couldn't Agree More

It started to irritate me when he reinjured his back during the sideline sprints in minicamp. It irritated me when he sat out the entire preseason getting his back healthy and now it’s pushed me over the edge after reading what he had to say about Peppers being pretty damn good, but he (Andrews) being pretty damn good too. There’s lots of players that WERE good 2 years ago. Get on the f*cking field, stop whining because you’ve been medically cleared to play for months, and do what you’re collecting huge paychecks to do.

So yes, he’s fully under my skin. Let’s bring back Big John. He’s the man and wouldn’t be crying about a back spasm. He’d rub some dirt on it, grow a patch of hair over it, chug a pint of whiskey and go out there and kick some a$$.

by rharris0127 on Sep 11, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

At this point...

We need to hope for two things:

1) No one signs Jon prior to Sunday. (Because we know the Eagle’s aren’t stupid enough to do that if they can wait 3 more days so that they don’t have to guarantee his contract)

2) No other OT’s get hurt this weekend.
2b) No OL’s struggle bad this weekend.
If one of 2 or 2b happen, Jon’s price tag will go up and that will decrease the chances of us signing him.

The way Shawn’s back continues to flare up… I don’t see the reasoning for NOT signing Big Jon after this weekend. Do you?

And I don’t wanna hear "well Jon isn’t 100%." Jon wasn’t close to 100% last year in the playoffs and look how well we played. I’d take Jon at 75% over a lot of guys at 100%. You disagree?

by Smitty2K3 on Sep 11, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

couldnt agree more

Andrews is fine, its all in that screwy head of his. If the “big kid” doesnt want to play its time to get the Grown Ass Man back out there
Jons going to show these guys what a O Line Bully is all about!

Exactly

Say Shawn comes back healthy and starts in Week 2… Jon still isn’t a bad depth guy to have around to be a leader in the locker room and to help that O-line get a nastiness attitude about ’em.

Big Jon + MJG + Cole = Nastiest Depth Oline in NFL

Damn…. just the idea of it. and truly at this point I dont see Shawn playing more than 5-6 games

The Eagles won’t sign Jon prior to Sunday. He’s not ready to play Sunday so there’s no point in signing him today and have to guarantee his contract.

In fact, I don’t think any team will offer him a contract before Sunday. The Eagle’s will wait until Sunday night or Monday to offer him anything (if they’re going to sign him).

I think they will

Runyan knows the system, hes ready- more so then Andrews…. but that aint saying much

Just so we're clear

You’d rather have a broken down 36 year old tackle who hasn’t even finished his rehabiliation start without having had any practice, than start a 24 year old tackle who has fresh enough legs to keep up with the Panthers’ pass rush?

Yeah that will work out real well.

dumbasses

runyan is old .. was horrible last year .. and didnt even practice one time this year .. justice is a hell of a lot better option . he played one game .. he will do ok this weekend .. that giants game was not his fault .. his first start against osi .. and he wasnt even workin wit the first team then .. hes improved a lot

Justice is much better suited to start Sundays game then Jon. Justice has been playing football for the past 2 months and didnt recently have his knee opperated on, more than we can say for Runyan.

I ACTUALLY AGREE W/ JIBTA

It would be foolish to trot JR out there right now without even breaking a sweat with a practice . Now i know veteran guys dont need practice as much as younger ones do, but in this case Runyan is gonna be way to rusty to go against one of the best. If we thought Winstons Osi game was bad, that would be nothing compared 2 wat Peppers would do to JR this weekend.
Winston Justice might be the most improved player on this team , and im anxious to see if he really is gonna turn out tobe a good find. ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT. BETTER LATE THEN NEVER

by goldenbird09 on Sep 11, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Aren’t we all talking about signing Runyan after week 1 anyways? So why are we even discussing him matching up against Peppers? I say we sign him for depth and insurance because I honestly don’t see this whole Shawn Andrews thing working out the way we want it to. Correct, Justice might be physically a little more prepared than Runyan as of today but truth be told, I would trust Runyan to be better in the long run and give a lot more to our OL than depending on Justice for the rest of the season. Even giving Justice a chance, which I’m all for, why not have Runyan there just in case?!

Runyan played with a broken tailbone in ‘07 while almost never practicing. He plays pissed off and wins many battles before the ball is snapped because he scares the shit out of people. Yeah, I’d take him over a 24 year old that doesn’t have a proven record of being a grade-A bad ass.

I bleed green and I piss silver and blue

by oldasquick on Sep 11, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

So were clear

Runyan is proven- hes done this with a broken tail bone, stress fractures, swolen knees, ligament tairs, concussions, etc. Hes more man than anyone on that line. Hes matched up against the best in the leauge year in and out.
Justice and his go ahead blocks wont cut it, hes shown that last year. Ruyan may have lost a step but he wants to play- unlike Andrews. And he knows the position and has shown he can play it- unlike Justice.

no he isn't and no he hasn't

Runyan has tenure and a reputation, and you think that tenure and reputation can overcome any obstacles. But there is no such thing as a proven commodity in the NFL, especially not aging tackles.

How many 36 year old tackles have held up in the course of an NFL season? Walter Jones and Orlando Pace have not been able to hold up, and they were All-Pros (and Pace is 33). I don’t see what makes Runyan different other than you like him a lot. “I like his moxie” isn’t a good enough reason. Jeremiah Trotter had moxy too but that didn’t mean he could play his position anymore.

And that’s ignoring the fact that he only was cleared to run a month ago. He is not ready to play, and the amount he’ll be able to contribute for a team at this stage of his career is questionable.

by ZorkNemesis on Sep 11, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Reid will be that judge

if Ried signs him I have no doubt he can still contibute
It was onlky a few months back he was still pan cakeing Tuck….
I do like his moxie, I like that term too Kudos
But Runyan is still a monster on the Right

This really is fukin bullshit, time to cut our losses with Shawn. Imean wat the fuk , is this guy gonna, ever play a game again ??? i think not , also i dont think Winston justice is the answer either. He may turn out to be eventually and he is vastly improved but maybe we should start looking into next years draft. Shawn Andrews Out, Justice to Start Against Carolina
Andy Reid has just announced that, due to continuing back problems, right tackle Shawn Andrews will miss week one’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Backup Winston Justice has gotten the nod to start.

Andrews may be done, or may need more rehab...

But who the hell are you guys to call that monster a pussey? Back injuries screw up lives whether you are a professional football player or a poodle-herder like JIBTA.

Andrews was a gamble this year, it looks now like he might not pay off, that has yet to be fully determined, but he is still a better athlete than anyone posting here could ever have dreamed to be. And the guy has MILLIONS of dollars on the line in getting back into action.

I’d love to throw the screwheads on this BBS who are calling him a loser and pussey into a steel cage with him. Let’s see how long you’d last against that ‘loser’.

by IggleGrrrreen(F-da-rest!) on Sep 11, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

difference

We’re not getting paid to play football. I’m not saying I necessarily agree with people calling him a baby for not playing (back injuries are dreadful), but to say others are wrong in being upset with him is like comparing apples to oranges.

The man gets paid to play football. No one else here does. That means he gets paid to lift weights, work out every day, and just about learn to maul people (on the field, of course).

The posters on here have other jobs. Some are in school. Some are accountants, businessmen, journalists, etc. None of them are being paid to perform on a football field. And you can bet your ass if one of us tried to get out of work for 1.5 years and get worker’s compensation for that long, our asses would be fired/failing school.

Again, I don’t necessarily agree with them, because you need your back to play football more than you do to work at a desk, but people are right to be upset that it’s gone on this long. With all the medical attention he’s received, and all of the time he’s had to rehab, he should be at 100% going into this season.

by eagleyosh on Sep 11, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I can't argue with you. (Except for the last paragraph.)

You have the right to be upset about anything you want to be upset about, but what is it gonna get you? It just looks like Shawn’s medical intervention didn’t work. Or it didn’t work fast enough. That happens, too.

Andy gambled with him and the payoff hasn’t been great. Eventually you gotta cut your losses and step away from the table. I think that’s probably what’s gonna happen here.

I wish I could get paid for slacking for a year and half. But the guy isn’t a bum or a loser, though. It’s a damn shame for him, the team and the fans, is what it is.

Wow, thanks for the insight

I think you may have misunderstood my post, I certainly meant no offense: So please let me gently clarify...

I read this part of your profile: " if I see Jimmy Rollins, I’ll shake his hand for that hilarious Dick’s commercial, but then pul him into a sucker punch right before twisting his right arm out of the socket. "

And I had this thought: Here’s what you have a right to as a fan of any team. You can choose to watch a game or turn it off. You can choose to buy a licensed product or leave it on the shelf. You can choose to watch how the season progresses or act like a hooting mandril, jumping up and down shouting how some player who is down on his luck, but clearly your superior by any measurement, is a loser, throwing batteries, and drinks and generally acting like a tiny-brained wiper of other peoples bottoms; making childish empty threats at people (Rollins) who play a kids game for a living, when the fact of the matter is, again, you are nothing, do not matter, and a truly a fly speck on the ass of anyone who has ever professionally played or coached the game.

Who cares what teams you like? Who cares if you grew up in North Jersey? You don’t matter, your opinion is sh*t, and you are an embarrassment as a fan. That was the point of my post.

And for the record, I am not a moron. I am an imbecile. Get that straight.

Nyuck Nyuck

Jimmy, is that you????

Did I hit a nerve? That’s quite the hissy fit. Must be the Rollins sister because Jimmy would recognize that quote you pulled as a joke and laugh rather than going into a 4 paragraph diatribe. Your opinion matters to me and you’ve officially hurt my feelings.

not a problem

as a new england sheetrocker…i essentially AM a professional athlete(cuz i sure as hell aint selling my brainpower in this trade) Ive been doing it for 12 years and have worked through
1. A blown out punctured bursa( the fluid sac that lubricates your elbow)
2. A fractured orbital (the bone right under your eye)
3. A sprained back with spasms ( albeit i had the help of percocets on that one)
4. A right arm contusion that had my whole arm turn black
5 over 112 STITCHES in various different places
6 and to many little bumbs bruises scrapes and cuts to list
the point being to all this is as someone who also DEPENDS on their body as their main tool i sucked it up an did what i was PAID to do ( like BIG JOHN ) but i dont get paid millions ( about 55k/yr) and i dont have a bunch of team doctors rubbing my vag all the time….I just got me and thats enufff as it SHOULD BE for mr SHAWN ’big squid" Andrews

OK, I'll take your word for it.

I think I’d still rather be ‘the big squid’ (love that one) than you, but not big Jon. From the interviews it sounds like Runyan’s nothing but a big ball of hurt and pain when he isn’t playing. Living in pain and rich must be better than living in pain and … well… average.

Shawn Andrews will play again, and he will rape the world. Again.

I don’t understand whiny folk complaining about wanting to cut ties with a top-5 lineman in this league. I don’t care if he’s a headcase, offensive line is the most important part of a team, and we have an amazing one in Shawn. He will get better, and you all will be dead fucking wrong about this.

by cwel87 on Sep 11, 2009 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

Probably so,

And I expect that the Eagles won’t be able to afford keeping him much longer while they wait. When they give recovery prognosis for musculoskeletal procedures like his, they do it in a range of time because every body reacts differently. And sometimes it just doesn’t work.
