A Modest Proposal to Improve BGN

So with the start of the 2009 Eagles season, I have a modest proposal that I think could make Bleeding Green Nation even better. It started when I was thinking back to when we lost the NFC Championship Game last year and some Giants, Cowboys, Cardinals, etc. trolls quickly made BGN accounts to rub it in our faces that we had lost. So I thought about how we could avoid that situation this year.

On Blogging the Boys they have a smart feature when you try to create a new account: they activate your account only after 24 hours. I'm pretty sure this is the only positive thing the Cowboys have contributed to the NFL in the last 20 years. I kid, I kid.

But I think this is a good feature; it prevents trolls from coming on and creating an account in the aftermath of a bad loss just to talk shit. Also, it prevents people who don't regularly post on this site from creating an account just to blast the Eagles over a recent decision they have made (i.e. how many people did just this after the Michael Vick signing!). In short, preventing the creation of instant accounts would probably stop a lot of dumb posts.

I don't mean to be stepping on Jason's toes here, but I wanted to throw this idea out there and see what you guys thought. It's not a huge deal because trolls and dumb posts are just something you have to live with, but if this little feature could reduce both then I think it would be worthwhile.

I don’t care so much about the opposing fans. Bring it on. However, I think back to the dog people that came out of the woodwork after we signed Vick – I’m picturing a fired up house mom getting her thoughts together for a great post, so she signs up… And then… Oops, have to wait a day! The thought of that makes me smile.

So agreed.

I have another proposal for improvment

Jason, I don’t know if the admin tools of this board allows for it or not, but it would be great if there was an ‘edit’ option for all fanpost replies. Personally, I hate making typos, and would love the ability to correct them.

by captain nodar on Sep 11, 2009 8:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Each individual site doesn’t get to make that choice. SB Nation has chosen not to allow edits, and personally, I’m perfectly fine with that, for a few reasons…

- First of all, there’s a “Preview” option. If the typos are that bothersome, use it.
- Secondly, we as fans hold players and coaches accountable for dumb things they may say in press conferences or interviews. Once it’s out – That’s it. They can’t take it back. And I’m not referring to typos here. If you say something you wish you hadn’t, then too bad. People are going to jump all over you. You shouldn’t then have the option to change your post and have the people’s comments after yours now not make any sense.

I like that

I usually have plenty of typos, but I like that people can’t back out of what they have said.

by Smallbugger on Sep 11, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do use the preview, but a lot of times I am in a rush.

Regarding not being able to take back what you said, that represents a fraction of a percent of edited posts. While there can be hot debates on occasion here at BGN, based on the type of board this is I would guarantee that > 99% of edits would be to correct typos, links, and other mistakes. I have been on plenty of message boards that allow edits and post retraction has always been a non-issue.

I agree with your point, but I believe the people who would edit to retract what they said represent such a small fraction of the posters that it is moot.

Are typos really that big of a deal though?

I mean… it’s a football blog, not a college essay.

Some people here like to be dicks about it.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Sep 11, 2009 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If there’s a typo here or there, you typically won’t hear anything. But if a post is thoroughly riddled with grammatical disasters, then that’s when people will poke a little fun. But even in those cases, you can either write, or you can’t – So even if you have the ability to edit, you’re still going to F it up.

true

For the most part a few mistakes will be overlooked. But some bloggers insist on not using a space between words, or abbreviate every word like their texting their girlfriend from their phone….very annoying.

I can’t spell very well, but for some reason the three "there"s being misused always gets me. Maybe because it’s so easy. I’m not sure JIBTA has ever managed to even accidentally use the correct one.

by AZ Eagle on Sep 12, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t care about a misspelled word or punctuation error. Perhaps typo is not the proper term and I should have used ‘mistake’. Such as typing the wrong players name, bad url in a hyperlink, a hotlinked image that does not allow remote linking and shows up as something different after 10 views, various Cobbs (I still find it funny how ‘Cobb’ has took on its present meaning here at BGN), things like that.

Either way, it can’t be changed so I guess it does not matter.

Unfortnately, the edit thing is a tech issue that I can’t control… but I could definitely do the 24 hour waiting period.

by JasonB on Sep 11, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Awesome

Like I said Jason, I’m sorry if I’m poaching on your territory here. I just vividly remember the trolls after the NFC title game and after the Vick signing and I thought a 24 hour waiting period would allow cooler heads to prevail. Thanks man.

by ajay on Sep 11, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i would also

like to see some sort of a quiz …. really hard digging deep Eagles fans would know kinda questions so that they have to spend time besides just clicking yes and waiting 24 hours …

that wasnt English sorry

Create a Quiz with questions that take a while to find the answer to if are not already known. Make them Eagles triva so that the obviously not interested would likely refuse to know anything about our franchise.

You would be suprized how much NFC east fans know about one another.

A test wouldnt work. I know more about the Eagles than I would ever care to admit.
As far as coming here to rub in a loss. Pure chickenshit by anyone who does that. of course it was chickenshit for some of your guys to do that after the 44-6 loss. I just dont know if you could idiot proof anything. The true assholes would wait a day and come back.

Yeah but if the true assholes wait a day and then come back, we would just sling insults his/her way on the basis of…“wow, you really registered, waited a day, and then remembered to come back to troll? Get a life.”

It’s a win win situation.

I don’t really mind when people come here from other blogs to talk trash. Typically they’ll say something dumb and get gang tackled by like 5 of BGN’s own haha for example: that panthers fan who decided to comment stuff about no name players that were gonna be a “threat” on sunday. The guy got attacked from all angles and in my opinion, pretty much embarassed. I get a kick outa that haha

by Q27 on Sep 11, 2009 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think we take pride in our trash talk

Personally I think the only day it got truly out of hand was the Vick signing because it wasn’t football related.

Beyond that I think we’re about as good as anyone at dishing it back to any troll in the forums.

by Smallbugger on Sep 11, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha agreed

i didn’t even bother with the vick stuff cause i know people are really passionate about both sides so i kinda saw that gettin outa hand lol

I don’t like the idea for a wait period. It would deter some new users and it wouldn’t stop anyone that wanted to troll. There’s no reason to put up a barrier for everyone when it will only stop those it’s not meant to stop. Trolls will get banned when they’ve done something, and we’ll deal with them until then. Not a big deal.

I am the people's troll :3â„¢

it doesn't matter whether the intent is to troll or contribute ...

… it would require an extra degree of commitment to join.

It would probably be offputting, especially for those who wanted to contribute on the day of a game. Not sure Jason would want to drive traffic away and hope it shows back up. But this is a good idea in theory.

I probably would’ve come back after a day, but I can see why people would be turned off and just wouldn’t.

Semi-related, I liked the 50 comments before you can make a fanpost suggestion. That means you at least have to hang around here long enough to learn not to re-post news that’s been posted, etc.

I don't like the "required to post 50 comments" thing

a lot of times, people from other blogs will come over and pay a visit for positive reasons before games to open a “questions about aposing team” thread (well, it is a trend that is common around the Falcoholic) that would no longer be able to do that if they were required to post 50 comments in order to provide that kind of an opportunity.

I think things are fine as is, I wouldn’t change them.

Quick responses

Re: yomjoseki – I don’t understand how this would deter new users. They would have to wait one day. That’s not really a big deal, is it? But you also say it wouldn’t stop trolls. Why not? I think a lot of trolls want to say something immediately after a loss or some other controversy. Most of them cool off after 24 hours and the ones that don’t are the ones, like you said, that get banned.

Re: Eagle_Man – This proposal doesn’t mean JasonB isn’t doing a good job. I’m not sure why you would infer that; I never said it.

by ajay on Sep 13, 2009 10:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i didnt mean it that way , what i meant is that i simply like it the way it is , it doesnt pertain to me anyway i am already a member and have been for a while , and have already signed up to sites like the cowgirls so i dont have to wait 24 hours to troll at will which i dont do unless they come over here and talk smack
but now that i think about it you might be on to something it most certainly wont stop the trolling but it may cut down on it a bit maybe as i do remember the random vick trolling post as well as the Championship Game stuff to

Semi-related, I liked the 50 comments before you can make a fanpost suggestion. That means you at least have to hang around here long enough to learn not to re-post news that’s been posted, etc.

i do like this idea

either way is ok i guess in regards to the 24 hour wait- when they troll we smack talk them back anyhow
