Juqua Parker arrested for possession
The hits keep on coming from what is turning into a rather tumultuous Eagles' training camp. The latest problem is DE Juqua Parker, who was arrested late last night after police found a small amount of marijuana on him.
Juqua Parker, whose birth name is Juqua Demail Thomas, was taken into custody during a traffic stop around 12:30 a.m. on N. Mountain Drive at Route 378, which is near the Eagles training camp on Lehigh's Mountaintop Campus.
Lower Saucon Township police said Parker was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation, and he had a small amount of marijuana in his possession.
With Victor Abiamiri injured, Parker is almost unchallenged for the starting LDE job which it makes it hard to either get rid of him or deal with him being suspended. Either way, it's another hassle that the team simply didn't need.
After this arrest and the aforementioned Abiamiri injury, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that the Eagles are shopping around for another DE.
Let's take Parker to task after the jump.
The stupidity of Parker in regards to this incident really does astound me. Not only is he out and about after midnight in the middle of a week full of two a day practices... he's out with weed on him. This is guy supposed to be fighting for his job. I can only presume he was smoking the pot or planning on doing so, since I can't really think of any other reason you'd drive around with a small amount of pot on you.
Plus, it's Bethlehem, PA. Where on earth are you going in the middle of the night? There's nothing there, which is probably the reason the team has camp at Lehigh.
It's simply inexcusable. Not just because of the little weed he had on him, because of the complete stupidity and total lack of judgment. This is a 31 year old man, he really has no excuses.

What an idiot. Things have really been going downhill since the start of Camp. The offseason went really well, but the optimism around this team has to be/is fading.
I'm not ready to move on from #20.

YA'KNOW, I'M ONE OF THOSE...
I’m never quite ready to forgive McNabb for this: the day he got drafted, no.2 in the first round, many Eagles’ fans booed. I’m one of those, in fact. But, how doesn’t he get it yet, we weren’t booing him… we were booing the organisation, and it had nothing to do with him personally (outside of his being a quarterback). Guess what, Donovan… YOU are the exemption that proves the rule. Look at your classmate quarterbacks… The Greatest Quarterback Class Ever!, and look at the Eagles’ history… how could we know you would actually pan out?
Dam’mit, we wanted Ricky Williams!

Uhm
Not to say I smoke, or to say that Juqua should have been smoking, but that’s a common misconception of a statistic.
Researchers found that 42% of people surveyed in the U.S. had tried marijuana at least once, and 16% had tried cocaine. About 20% of residents surveyed in the Netherlands, by contrast, reported having tried pot; in Asian countries, such as Japan and China, marijuana use was virtually “non-existent,” the study found. New Zealand was the only other country to claim roughly the same percentage of pot smokers as the U.S., but no other nation came close to the proportion of Americans who reported trying cocaine.
Source: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1821697,00.html
Now, we can argue about “use” vs “tried it once,” but then, we could argue about the same semantics with Parker. If 42% have tried, you can bet more than 5-10% “use” on any type of regular basis (i.e. have done it more than once? or do it once a month? once a year? you get the idea of why it’s difficult to quantify usage quantity)
The article goes on:
Just over 20% of Americans reported trying pot by age 15 and nearly 3% had tried cocaine by the same age. Those percentages jumped to 54% and 16%, respectively, by age 21.
According to the American Lung Association,
Each day, nearly 6,000 children under 18 years of age start smoking; of these, nearly 2,000 will become regular smokers. That is almost 800,000 annually.
http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=39868
That means given a start age of 15, you’ve got a 33% chance of smoking the rest of your life. I guess the numbers are a bit smaller for pot since it’s “more” illegal than cigarettes are (although for minors both are illegal and thus difficult to obtain, so I would guess the numbers aren’t that much smaller), but it’s safe to say that around 1/3rd of those 20% of Americans who try pot before 15 (i.e. at least 6%) continue smoking pot on at least a regular basis. That’s JUST that demographic — most people don’t start smoking until after 15, and in all probability something closer to 15-20% of Americans use pot on a regular basis (depending on how you define regular).
So, before we go on comparing Parker’s little amount of Weed to rape & Hitler & stoners, let’s consider the facts — a sizeable minority of Americans smoke weed on a regular basis, larger than 10% but less than 40%. It’s more than “you and your stoner friends,” it’s like you and every 5th person you look at (depending on age) — the demographics of 18-24 have significantly higher proportions of weed smokers than older demographics, next highest being 25-31 (and so forth).
Again, I’m not condoning it — we’re paying this guy a ton of money to NOT do stupid shit like get caught with weed in the middle of anywhere, let alone nowhere (although if there was ever a time & place I wouldn’t blame someone for wanting to get high, it’s at humid, 90 degree weather training camp in the middle of nowhere… again, not condoning, just pointing out it’s not that crazy for someone to want to escape a place like that).
But, all things considered, there ARE far worse things, unforgivable things he could have done that could have wrecked not only our season but his own life and one to hundreds of millions-to-billions others (e.g. a rapist or Hitler). So it’s not a bad idea to keep it all in perspective.

To me, its the fact that he was out late driving around, less the weed. It brings into question his commitment to becoming a better football player and his commitment to helping his team win. He is not taking his role seriously as a, potential, starting member of this Eagles defense, a defense that is injured and looking for leadership, I might add. Especially right now, there is no room for this kind of crap. And at 31, what kind of example does this set for the younger guys on the team as they see that Parker is out and about late, smoking weed in the middle of the week with practice tomorrow.
Also, what I do not like about these kind of things is that it gives the team a bad image. JP has to realize that, at all times, he is representing the Philadelphia Eagles with the things he says and does, not just himself. It is selfish and frustrates me. I do not condone smoking weed, but I am all for these guys having fun (responsible, legal fun that is). They work hard and deserve to enjoy their lives. They just need to learn how to have fun and be smart and stay the HELL out of trouble!

was that really necessary? someone on your team gets in trouble, and you make some comment about the Boys? No can you name the last Cowboys player to get arrested during pre-season or the season?
In case you were looking for it, it was Marcus Coleman back in November of 2006 for a DWI. I am not saying that the Eagles have a record for players getting in trouble either, but at least pick a team that actually has players getting in trouble.
Dallas may take a chance on players who got in trouble in the past, but the fact that none of them got in trouble while here is a testament to the program JJ has in place to assist these type of players.

his drunk in public? that was dropped? no I went during the season because that is when teams have much more control over their players, the same reason I didn’t bring up Mike Patterson, his was in the off-season too. I also think that if anyone looks into the laws about drunk in public you would find that you can pretty much be arrested for being drunk, period. That would get most of us, and that charge was dropped if I am not mistaken.

i'm guessing it was referring to the criminal pasts of signed boys
as you said, your organization doesn’t mind signing players with pasts plagued with run-ins with the law. that alone suggests that your organization doesn’t care so much about off the field actions.

I’m gonna go ahead and disagree with that. As he stated, their record of players who get into trouble WHILE they are Cowboys is actually pretty commendable. I’m by no stretch of the imagination a Cowboy supporter, but if you’re gonna give ‘em shit, there’s plenty of fact-based insults we can throw at them, this just doesn’t happen to be one of them.

once they’re on the team, you’re right, they do better. however, signing guys like pacman jones, to me, doesn’t send the message that you’re interested in what your players do off the field. maybe i’m wrong in this view, but to me signing players with pasts as troubling as jones signifies disinterest in off the field actions. i do see your point, though.

I wouldn’t want them on my team but I don’t think most of them would be a problem if we did sign them. May I respectfully disagree
These guys have a full time training staff at their beckon call who are able to give them much better painkillers than weed.
The painkillers that one can take in pill form (vicodin, oxycontin) are far more addictive than the THC in cannabis. In general, opiate-based medicines are harmful and in many cases less desirable because of the side effects.
To be honest, I’d much rather see a player on my team smoking a little weed to take the pain away than building a dependance on pharmaceuticals.
NOTE: Yes, you’re correct, getting caught was the real problem. I was simply taking issue with your first statement.
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.
by IronHank on Aug 5, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Agreed completely with Hank
The getting caught is inexcusable. The putting yourself into a position to get caught is inexcusable. The weed is eh. Bad, but could be infinitely worse.
As far as a painkiller, there’s a reason weed is prescribed as a cancer treatment drug instead of others. In addition to excellent nausea treatment, it’s a pretty powerful painkiller with extremely few physical side effects of other painkillers.

I love how the answer is always “Everyone else is doing it, so why not”? When has that ever been a legitimate reason to do anything past the age of 6 years old?
I’ve been through 2 a days with a professional sports team, and I’ve been through 2 NA meetings a day with my daughter. And I’ve been to city jail to pick her up out of lock-up.
Parker’s a grown man. He should be making mature decisions. If I had the choice of doing something illegal with a very small chance of getting caught or getting paid $2 MM a year, I’m taking the cash and I am not doing anything to jeopardize it.
Whatever happens to him, he deserves for his simple foolish and moronic decisions.

Calm down, man. I know it’s been over a half hour since I posted but I had to get a shower and drive to work. Sorry I couldn’t stay and point out all the flaws in your logic the entire time but I’m glad to announce that I’m at work and bored and will be for hours.

i love weed
but parker is very wrong here. many of us will be the first one to stand in court in support of legalizing it. but until it is, if your job is on the line, don’t freaking smoke it. don’t even have it. it’s your job we’re talking about here. your life. parker isn’t very smart.

What an IDIOT!!!!!
I don’t want him on my team anymore. I have nothing against potheads, but I can’t suffer fools.
TRADE HIM TO RAIDERS FOR BURGESS!!!

Not a bad idea… he’d fit in well with the Raiders right now.

you are an idiot of the highest degree. I smoked pot a bit when i was younger. Then, i got to the “real world” and understood that simply catching a little buzz isnt worth the penalties that i would face if caught. So i stopped. It’s called judgment. JP didnt display any here. You can say all you want how minor an offense it is, but the fact is that its illegal. Now, he’s going to be suspended for 1-4 games WITHOUT pay. Wanna take bets that he wont be puffin’ the ganja….or at least just NOT CARRYING it! This “minor” case will end up costing JP a few hundred thousand.

Is there anyway to bounce idiots off these boards? Something like reverse ‘recs’ or every week we vote one poster off the island.

Best idea ever
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

And to further your point
I smoked A LOT of weed in my youth. I stopped when I had kids. And not that this is even remotely the point, but I think it should be legal. That being said, he didn’t just hurt the team by getting arrested, he would also hurt the team by smoking. I played college ball and yes, I went through 3 a days. It was painful. But I always, always laid off weed during the season. When the season was over, I was happy to partake but during the season, I would never do that to my team. It may take the pain away but at its worst, it makes you lazy. At its best, it makes you sluggish and tired. Just what we want in our starting LDE. So yes, this is asinine on JP’s part on so many levels and does show a lack of commitment. Dude should have been in bed resting up by 12:30am.

He just made bad decisions. Flat out, and on several levels. Being out at 12:30 on a work night is just dumb. My job doesnt require me to be in tip top physical shape like his does, and i still know the benefit to a good night sleep.

you wow me with your experience and insight into this incident. after this post i feel well informed about some notion that making things seem worse then they are and blowing things way out of proportion is the wise thing to do… i never said anything about this being a minor offense btw. you dont even know if the charges are correct. or if the search was legal. i care enough to waste my time here…

bad judgement
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/20090805_Police__Eagles_Parker_admitted_pot_was_his.html
- Parker had pot
- Heremans was drunk (for a guy that big to blow a 0.05, you know he had more than just a few beers)
- Making an illegal turn while driving without headlights
- 2 young women in the van
They basically had 30 minutes to drop off the women to make it back in time for curfew.
The story is comical, like something out of a Dave Chappelle comedy routine. However, when it comes to our beloved Eagles, it’s not funny. We’re dying for a championship. There’s been so much anticipation for this season, it kills us to see players that clearly were not taking their jobs seriously.

“During the stop, police said they noticed a “small amount of marijuana” in the vehicle."
So the dude just left it sitting out? To me, that’s the most foolish part of all this. I have no problem with him smoking some weed during camp, but put the sack in your pocket. They’re not going to search you if you’re not driving. I don’t care that it’s illegal- most of us take similar risks and I’d rather live how I want to live, even if I have to pay a fine or spend an hour or two in the county cell a few times. So the dude makes several million dollars to play football. So he put that in jeopardy to smoke some weed. Let him; it’s his life.
He didn’t hurt the team and he’s not going to get a suspension for having a nug on him. Santonio Homes was actually driving with a blunt and he’s in the clear. This is way less egregious an offense. The biggest problem is ESPN slapping this on the bottom line and people thinking less of the Eagles… do any of you honestly care? It’s not like we haven’t had negative press before.

I think...
I think that the people who are making this an opportunity to talk about marijuana “rights” are just missing the point. Right now, it’s illegal. Juqua Parker was caught with an illegal object. Regardless of how we may feel about that, that’s the bottom line. He was stupid, and he should be in trouble (and is).
This has literally nothing to do with the pot debate. It has everything to do with common sense.

by andyreidswaistline on Aug 5, 2009 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Common sense
Something that people who are drinking or smoking up exhibit a distinct lack of. Regardless of how it makes you feel, is anybody here arguing that inhaling smoke of any kind into your lungs makes you a better athlete? Or that smoking up makes you quicker and more coordinated? The guy is competing for a starting job with possibly millions of dollars on the line, and he can’t resist lighting up? If the guy was on my team, I would be pissed at his stupidity.

Homer: Woo-hoo!

if the guy wants to smoke on his down time.....let him.
my issue is with the fact that he galavants around philly with a dimesack in his car like it’s no big deal. it’s just not worth it when it’s so easy to be careful.

Is Juqua a philanderer, or not?
I like hanging out with chicks, why can’t he? Kinda’ curious… sounds like they met at a bar and they were bringing them up to see camp pretty near curfew (and Todd’s gotta’ practice- at Left Tackle, no less- in the morning). Were they gonna’ call ’em a cab to get home?

@ Lehigh - There's Starters, a few other good restaurants, & the new Sands Casino
Plus, it’s Bethlehem, PA. Where on earth are you going in the middle of the night? There’s nothing there, which is probably the reason the team has camp at Lehigh.
I resent this statement
but not much else going on since it’s summer semester. But, they might have been coming back from the Starters bar on that side of the mountain, or the movie theatre, but there’s nothing on that side of the campus except 1 small shopping outlet
