Taking Stock of Training Camp: Aug. 4th
A lot of roster moves took place over the past two days after Stewart Bradley was lost for the season. While not all of the newly signed Eagles were able to take part in practice that day, the defense had a new look to it with the additions of MLB Matt Wilhelm and DE Jason Babin. Here is a brief rundown of who's stock is on the rise and who's stock is falling.
Stock on the Rise:
Willie Williams- Initially little more than an afterthought addition to the Eagles roster, Williams has impressed at defensive tackle so far, already outlasting competitor Jervonte Jackson in the battle for the 4th defensive tackle spot. He has been working with the second team defense as an LDT and putting some nice pressure on Kevin Kolb.
Eldra Buckley- Buckley has been proving his tenacity throughout training camp, running hard and smashing up the middle for big gaines. He has been proving particularly useful in third-and-short situations, an area where the Eagles struggled last season.
Kyle Eckel- Not to be undone by Buckley's stellar performance, Eckel provided one of the offense's few touchdowns during goal-line drills. Eckel recieved a handoff from Kolb and easily plowed past the defense, which had been shutting down virtually every play up until that point.
Macho Harris- Harris is finally back as a full participant in practice since sustaining a high ankle sprain during the rookies and selected veterans portion of camp. It's good to see such a promising rookie back in action.
Jeremy Maclin- Maclin finally got himself off of the "Falling" list by agreeing to a 5-year, $15.5 million contract. Hope the wait was worth it, Jeremy, now get your butt on the field.
Stock Falling:
Winston Justice- While Justice remained with the first team offense and performed well in pass protection, he committed some costly mistakes. In one-on-one drills, he was repeatedly bested by Jaqua Parker, and then committed a facemask on Chris Gocong which initiated a shoving match. That wasn't the only fight Justice was involved in, either. The young lineman also was a main player in a large fight involving Omar Gaither. Too bad this isn't the Jets' training camp or Justice would be at the top of the class.
Marcus Thigpen, Jervonte Jackson, and Courtney Robinson- This is about as far as a player's stock can fall. Thigpen, Jackson, and Robinson were cut from the 80-man training camp roster to make way for the signings of Maclin, Babin, and Wilhelm. None of the three rookie free agents were making a splash in camp, so it's no surprise that they were let go.
