Turns out, holding out of camp doesn't really affect a guy's career in any quantifiable way.

Iggles Blog - Philadelphia Eagles Blog: Gaither / Bradley Statistical Comparison
The Football Outsiders' numbers give a clear edge ... to Omar Gaither. He was better against the pass (which I expected) and the run (which I definitely did not).

That Gaither and Bradley comparison

made me feel way better.

RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.

I think Gaither will be great again.
NFL stands for (Not for Long)
This is his chance to shine again, let’s hope he makes the best of it and he ends up in the Pro-Bowl.
Who knows, our biggest battle next year could be Gaither and Bradley in the Middle…. Just saying…

My point is, WhoTheFukKnows?

I find Twitter generally moronic, but I can support almost anything that punctures coaches’ deeply held conviction that they are protecting the nuclear codes from the KGB. It’s football; there’s less at stake here than in the average Planning Board meeting.

They really do go overboard sometimes.

Not to be a Debbie Downer on Gaither...

…and I respect Football Outsiders to a certain degree, but going from Stewart Bradley to Omar Gaither is a MAJOR, MAJOR downgrade. Here are my reasons why…

- Bradley never came off the field. Stayed on in the base D, the nickel, dime, etc., and was the player that not only relayed the plays to the defense, but also called out all the pre-snap adjustments. Now you have a situation where Gaither (or Mays, or whoever) will not be in a role where they never come off the field, and the resulting potential confusion could lead to issues. For example – 4th quarter, 3rd and 7, Mays/Gaither comes out of the game, the QB calls an audible and the offense resets to a new formation, and now all of a sudden Quintin Mikell is now forced call out adjustments after not having done so all game? I formerly dismissed that the defense would suffer significantly because of the losses of Jim Johnson and Brian Dawkins, but this loss is huge.

- Gaither (as the statistics will show) has very similar numbers to Bradley. However, the main reason Gaither lost both of his starting jobs was because of his unwillingness to take on blockers. Bradley was incredible in that regard, and I just don’t see Gaither stoning Chris Snee or Madison Hedgecock in the hole and bottling up running plays. Bradley’s value in this regard will never show up on a stat sheet. Gaither’s athleticism is nice, and maybe he makes some plays, but it was his toughness that cost him his job… twice.

- On a side note, “tackles” is a pretty useless stat. Guys on bad teams usually lead the league in tackles because their defenses can’t get off the field. Of the 10 leading tacklers last season, anyone want to guess how many went to the playoffs? 2. 2 out of 10. That’s it.

Now don’t get me wrong… I like Omar Gaither, just not as a starter. I like him as a guy that can fill in mid-game for any one of the 3 LB positions. But to go into a season with Omar Gaither as the starting MLB as opposed to Big Stew… Huge difference. The only silver lining (and it’s not an especially shiny silver lining), is maybe we find out Joe Mays is a player.

Bye, Big Stew and JJ :(

I'm with you, Bye, Dawk

Bradley was a player with an expected upward arc. A lot us had pro bowl aspirations for him this year if he continued to improve off his really solid first year as a starter. Gaither is likely at a plateau. He’s a solid player, but does anybody think he’s likely to be a pro bowl caliber player?

Last year JJ replaced Gaither in the middle with a completely untested second year player, and then benched him mid season for another very inexperienced player. Obviously, JJ, whose judgment is not in dispute, saw that Gaither wasn’t accomplishing the unmeasured things that you’ve identified in your post. That’s why I think Mays is getting a real shot to run with the first team D — his upside is potentially better than gaither’s known ability.

I certainly agree that Bradley is the better player, but I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say it’s a “major major downgrade.”

Actually, I called it a MAJOR, MAJOR downgrade. We’ll chalk this one up in the “agree to disagree pile,” but I have absolutely no confidence in Gaither as our starting MLB whatsoever.

Well said

I’ve heard Shaun O’Hara talk about how big a pain in the rear Stew is, because he plays hard and is always up in his face. He’s a major loss to this squad. Especially heading into this year without JJ and BDawk.

If you had to think of the face of this defense over the past few seasons it’d end up being one of those 3.

The void seems almost insurmountable at this point in time.

Plax

Yes, Im going to defend him. How can Vick get about 2 years, and Plax could get 3 and a half at least? Shoting yourself in the leg is worse than KILLING a bunch of dogs? Huh?

Plax had the option to plea bargain for 1 year, but gambled and may have lost.

That and...

the gun laws in New York are some of the worst in the US. If this would’ve happened in another state, this would be less of an issue.

Burress the Burro

Hey, if it had happened outside the City, it would be less an issue.

True, and...

I’m just glad this hasn’t turned into a gun rights discussion like the Parker post has for weed. This is not a politics site. This is a sports site.

vick didn't go away for killing dogs
On August 24, Vick filed his plea documents with the federal court. He pled guilty to “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture”. In addition, he admitted to providing most of the financing for the operation itself, as well as participating directly in several dog fights in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina. He also admitted to sharing in the proceeds from these dog fights. He further admitted that he knew his colleagues killed several dogs who didn’t perform well enough. However, while he admitted to providing most of the money for gambling on the fights, he denied placing any side bets on the dogfights. He also denied actually killing any dogs himself.42

and yes, carrying a loaded gun with the safety off in a crowded night club is worse than killing dogs. it could have easily gone off at a different angle and killed a person.
