Didinger: Handling of Bradley Injury 'Unprofessional'
By Ray Didinger
CSNPhilly.com
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – I don’t have a cell phone. I don’t have a BlackBerry, nor do I Twitter. I guess that’s how I missed the memo.
I didn’t realize that coming to the Eagles’ training camp meant I was working for Andy Reid. I thought I was here as a reporter. Silly me. Well, that’s OK. Andy set me straight after Monday’s practice.
We’re expected to take orders from him – all of us in the media. We’re supposed to do what we’re told. If we don’t, there will be consequences. Reid made that very clear.

Gotta love Ray Diddy – Tells it like it is.

Obviously, Reid is the one with all the info, so…
It would make sense that if you do what he asks, you get what he has.
You don’t work for him, but it’s supply and demand.
The more you go around him(which could take a while)
The harder you make it on yourself….
Suck it up and play ball Ray.

Nonsense....
Reporters of all people should know not to push buttons with the guy that feeds them their stories. I dont know if Andy lays down a lot of other ground rules like this, but i highly doubt it. I dont think his request was outrageous, and i think that his reply was perfect. “You didnt do as i asked, now i wont tell you anything.” A nice, professional “F.U.”
Clap, clap, clap. Great response, Andy. Treat yourself to a cheesestaek!

The problem is that the info given in the press conferences is not solely for the reporters. It is for us, the fans. In spiting the reporters whom he felt crossed a line, Andy also slighted the fans, who deserved to hear the official word on whether or not of their beloved players had a season ending injury.

i'm with you...
i think he thinks he’s (pardon the grammar) punishing the media for breaking his pact, but he’s punishing the fans who really want to know what the situation is. i hate it when reid does this.

Gimme a break
To anyone siding with A.R. on this did you even read the article?
I guess you would have preferred to wait all day for Reid to confirm the injury… right?
Why did the reporters seek to confirm the news of this injury?
Umm, because its their job to provide Eagles fans with news ASAP.
We are the reason, bottom line.

really?
you seriously believe the sportswriters here care about the fans? please don’t be so naive. the media is only out for themselves in the guise of being “about the fans”, the fact that he made the article all about how he was slighted pretty much backs it up. i think andy’s request is pretty fair seeing how a lot of guys around the league give their reporters nothing.
by zerofischer on Aug 4, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
missing the point
I’m not saying they necessarily care about he fans. Although I think Ray Didinger does.
If the eagles fan base were not so rabid there would not be so many reporters covering them. The point is the reporters have a job because of the fans.
Didingers point is not that he was slighted. Its that Andy may be pissed at the media but its unprofessional of him to withhold information simply because he’s mad.
Why isn’t he mad at Eskin? Why isn’t he mad at the fans?
And what coach gives you less than Reid? Bellichick?

i disagree with you entirely…..
Andy is proving a point now. His request was to let him do the talking on a specific subject. He cant force them to listen to him, so takes control of the situation by “shutting the door.”
Who was unprofessional first? The media that ignored his request would be my guess. Andy is just reacting. He wants the info controlled from the top. Especially on something as touchy as injuries.
I’ll bet that the media goes through the correct streams next time when trying to gain information. Andy Reid – 1
Media – 0

i'm with Andy 100% on this one
If i were in his position i’d have done the exact same thing. Stop acting like Reid wasnt going to confirm the Bradley injury under normal circumstances. But some (or several) idiot reporters had to try to jump the gun to be “the first one to break the news”
That would have pissed me off too. Andy is pretty vague normally in his PC’s. Ok vague isnt really the word :)… but he has promised time and time again to be truthful and open about the injury front as long as reporters wait to get it from him. Remember how NOBODY had any official word on the TO injury until 2004… then we all gathered around the TV to watch the PC with Reid and Burkholder. Thats because thats the way it should be. Let everyone come to one sourse at the same time and get the right story. In theory that should remove any chance for a story to be reported incorrectly.
Andy Reid for the win

i’m with you. Andy controlled a situation the only way he could. How good would his word be if he “warned” reporters to only get info on injuries from him, and then they went about it without any response?
He handled it the same way that i would have….

Let me also add
It really irks me the way that outlets like ESPN pretty much crucify anyone who ever mentions anything bad about the media. Its like they are all this big club that thinks there should be no private business in the world. Like, “How dare so and so not tell us this or that”
Face it. The media LOVES to start stuff, even if its not true just to get a reaction. Then they act like they’re the most innocent people on the earth. Just for the people or whatever. BS

It was a pissing match between Andy and the reporters. Andy was childish, but all this crying and whining by the local media is as well.
In the end, fans are the only ones who suffer.
by JasonB on Aug 4, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Who suffered at all? I only believe that Stewart Bradley suffered at this point. Perhaps SB was going to get a 2nd opinion, or perhaps Andy was afraid to show his hand as he reached out to other LB’s. (Cough, Wilhelm.)
I dont think that any suffered here except for the hurt player. We have no need for information immediately. We desire it, but i would prefer for the info to be 12 hours late and 100% accurate.
Think about all of those “trade offers” that the Eagles took part in for a #1 wideout this offseason. That was beyond annoying, and my best guess is that it was mostly fabricated by hungry reporters.

thanks.....
and to further that point…how many of us “didnt believe” initial reports and wanted to hold out until there was something official? Doesnt that speak for the validity of the reporters word anyway??

This is exactly why I believe Reid handled the situation incorrectly. I must have checked this site as well as PE.com 100 times that day, and I am certain I was not the only one. We Eagles fans are a rabid bunch, and Reid owes it to the hardcore fanbase that make it possible for him to have a 7 figure salary. To withhold an official statement on Bradley’s injury was poor judgment on Andy’s part, end of story.
by captain nodar on Aug 4, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly though, it’s the offseason, things are slow, it’s not the end of the world if we hear something a few hours later than expected. Reid was going to confirm the injury if the media stayed within their limits. I consider myself a rabid eagles fan, and I’m not going to cry if I have to wait for an official press conference for news of the injury.

also...
I also disagree that Andy is being childish. He made a simple request to people that he has professional relationships with. They ignored him. Shouldnt we be more upset with them, rather than Andy? What did Andy do wrong?
by GreenInBaltimore on Aug 4, 2009 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
While Andy Reid’s actions may be discourteous to reporters, this article is the only thing “unprofessional” that has happened.
They’re acting as if this information would’ve never been disclosed if they didn’t squeeze it out of Bradley ASAP.

Squeeze it out of Bradley?
I wonder if AR is pissed at Bradley.
After all the reporters called but he or his agent didn’t have to give them any information.

Nah but seriously I think the media was kind of in the wrong but I don’t know who leaked the information because it went from “minor” to devestating

wonder if Didinger would have a job with Reid
Yeah i know someone else is going to reply to this about whether or not athletes and coaches would have jobs without fans and reporters, but Didy lost my respect a little with this

i honestly can see both sides of the story. i really respect ray diddy. i think he has a tremendous knowledge of the game and is one of the finest eagles historians in the country. however, his article did seem a tad childish. he could have voiced his opinion a little differently.
having said that, reid is renown for withholding information from the fans who deserve to know the goings on of the team. i want to know about stewart bradley’s health straight from the horse’s mouth. i don’t want to be punished because some reporters crossed the line. i’m not in 2nd grade anymore. i shouldn’t have to put my head on the desk because three other kids were talking too loudly in class.
case in point. jason said it best…
It was a pissing match between Andy and the reporters.

Totally agree with Andy’s actions on this one. It’s not “unprofessional” to set some ground rules, in fact it’s just the opposite. It’s not like he was saying they’ll never get the news, he just wants to create some order out of the chaotic one-upsmanship that takes place in the media. Didinger just sounds like a whiny bitch in this article, and most of the time he’s complaining about the treatment of himself and other reporters, not the fans. What I find unprofessional is Didinger wasting his time with a retaliation article, as well as reporters basically harassing StewBrad after an injury that was surely devastating to him. Love Didi on the post game show, but he can shove it on this issue.

Andy Reid wants the burden of dealing with the media, and wants one less thing on his player’s minds. Less distractions = a more focused team. This could still be some of the fallout from the TO days. If players don’t talk to the media, they can’t develop gigantic egos that tear teams apart.
I mean, I know players still talk to the media, but you have to believe Reid has strict rules on what the players can and can’t say.

Agreed - total pissing match.
To me, the most fascinating part of the article was learning that R Diddy doesn’t own a cell phone. Wow.
Maybe he can trade in one of those god-awful brown suits of his and buy a damn phone!
