Introducing Tony Curtis, the Tight End

It is my pleasure to introduce to you Eagles fans, Tony Curtis

I have been following his career since he came out. He is going to give you guys a tough, physical, blocker who can double as a leaping jumping bean in the red zone. He was caught in a numbers game in Dallas which is unfortunate. He beat out their former 2nd round pick in Fasano and had the position, then Mr. Jones goes and drafts a physical beast (Bennett) in last year’s 2nd. Tony proved himself but took a backseat to the 2nd round pick. If you watched HBO’s training camp reality show, you saw the coaches enabling the heck outta Bennett. No matter what that kid did, the silver spoon was never taken away and he was given everything to him. The TE coach literally had to plea with him to come back to practice and tuck his jersey in. C'mon! Are you serious? Well, he is Jerry Jones’ guy and he’ll keep his job before the coach will. Shame… So, now Tony has found a home in Philly. I'm excited to see Tony again on Sunday and hopefully he'll contribute a lot to you guys' run to 2nd place in the NFC behind my Niners.

Strengths: Blocking in all aspects. That's what he's known for, that's what he's good at. Will get beat to the inside on occasion when the defender is slanting inside. Will drive smaller opponents down the field. Shows good pass protection when staying in to block. Flatbacked Michael Strahan in playoff loss two years ago, made the highlight reel when trying to display the nastiness of that game. In 2007, caught 3 passes for 3 TDs. 2 of them he was uncovered Video at 1:53 but the 3rd one against Philly he leaped 4 feet off the ground. Ok, maybe I’m stretching it a little, 3 feet sounds more like it. Look at 1:38 Video  On the goal line, you will be hard pressed to find a better drive blocker like Curtis at the TE position. He simply owns the defenders and will stay low, and squat those fat 300 pounders into the endzone. Video Look at 3:16 and see the technique. The biggest plus with Curtis is that he’s a playmaker. When put into make-or-break situations, Tony is going to MAKE the play. For example, the game versus the Buffalo Bills and the Cowboys had to recover the onside to have a hope to win: Video  It was Tony Curtis who came up with it to give them a chance. They say it was Nathan Jones but it’s Tony.

Tony1234_medium

Weaknesses: He's going to have to learn the playbook and practice it a lot before he completely understands his role. We'll see what offense Coach brings. From what I'm seeing, he's going to have a lot more 2 TE sets with the two blocking TE just signed. When catching the ball, he’s not going to make anyone miss, but will try and bulldoze the tackler. Has to cradle the ball when running with it and protect it like his newborn baby. He’ll lose sight of that if he’s going to get the ball more. Gotta concentrate Tony, do your thing boy. So, as with most of us professionals, communication is key. He did miss his block last season on a punt that lost the game. But what you don’t know is that the left side of the line was blocking inside the whole game as an adjustment and blockers were replaced due to an injury. Well, when you replace and shuffle an entire side of a line, don’t you think it would be wise to ensure everyone is on the same page? video 4:47

Tony12345678_medium

Overall: He could explode and show everyone that a small school kid can beat the odds in the NFL and actually be given a chance, or he could get caught up in another numbers game. He's big, he's strong, he's got hops, good hands. I'm really excited! The redzone is going to be a gimme! Video They nicknamed him, "Some like it HOT!". Anyways, I’m a fan of his and I’ve broken down every film of him for the past 3 years so I may be biased, but he’s gotten a bad wrap by the media in Dallas. He’s been called a potentially good 2nd stringer, but you know what. He beat out Anthony Fasano for his spot and Fasano was traded to Miami. Fasano started in Miami and caught 3 tds last season. I’d actually give him a chance as the starter.

Formerly posted on the Chiefs board. Since he sprained his ankle and the emergence of Sean Ryan while he missed opps, Tony is now an eagle. You guys remember how high off the ground he got against you?

MYERS

I actually liked wat i saw out of MYERS in the colt game. I know it was only 1 game and a preseason one at that but the kid looked good and basically caught everything that came his way. I must say I dont kno 2 much about him besides wat i saw in the colt game. Can he block and wat r his chances of making the team now with the addition of Curtis????

Magua, are you still touting Michael Crabtree too?

You’re just trying to divert our covetous gaze away from Vernon Davis, aren’t you? Truth now.

Davis

There’s no way you’re getting Big Vern. He’s going to be a stud. Draft him as your 1st TE this year, trust me. Ok, that may be a reach but seriously. Frank Gore is going to be the top producing back this year.

I like it...

Don’t know much about him until I read this Post. But we can certainly use more bodies at the TE position. The backups we have do not look like players… especially Schobel and Bright. Myers showed flashes last week against the Colts.

I like this move, but I don’t want the FO to shut their eyes to other options now. There’s always a chance that a team will drop a better TE than Curtis. If that happens, I hope we look to bring them in too.

woot!

blocking TE! and (hopefully) the end of Schobel! Good move…at least until we sign a legit #2 TE fingers crossedBEN WATSONfingers crossed

in all seriousness

he is a good blocking TE, and this leaves the depth chart looking (in my mind)
1. Celek
2. Myers
3. Curtis

I think Curtis is ahead of Myers but I agree that those three are going to make the team

myers is a good reciever, so I think he’d be on the depth chart above Curtis…but curtis would see more action in special teams and as a blocker

I really liked Myers during that Colts game. He seemed to have caught everything that was thrown his way. I can’t really say much about his blocking. Didn’t pay too much attention to that.

I hope this is true… we could use a good blocking TE.

Wow, so untrue...
C’mon! Are you serious? Well, he is Jerry Jones’ guy and he’ll keep his job before the coach will.

He beat Anthony Fasano? Wow… Curtis was always the 3rd TE with Fasano on the lineup… Fasano went as a Free Agent to Miami and that’s what this guy believes to be the reason behind him beating Fasano? Better make it: Dallas didn’t wanted to resign Fasano and was looking to add someone else in the Draft.

Curtis took a back seat to Bennett? Why!? One guy is on his way to being a pretty good TE, the other? Well… He was signed as a street FA after being cut from a very talent poor TE franchise…

Strengths: Blocking in all aspects.

LOL.

Fasano was a very average blocker and became a pretty solid blocker after changing colors, so there’s a chance that Curtis will develop, but Curtis wasn’t known for being even average as a blocker in Dallas, he had his moments (like the Freeney block) but he had much more bad moments.

Fasano went as a Free Agent to Miami?

He was traded dude. it was fasano and a linebacker for a 4th round pick

by DeSmac on Aug 25, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, true, Fasano and Ayodele

Still, he was gone because the team grew tired of him, his poor blocking and stone hands got to the nerves of the Cowboys brass.

Good for the Dolphins, they managed to get him to perform better.

by Chandus on Aug 25, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

He's right

Curtis got cut because he CAN’T block. They drafted Phillips this year for that very reason.

He’s a decent pass catching TE, but you guys didn’t get a diamond in the rough here.

by ChrisRichey on Aug 25, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, so true...

… And your evidence is the fact that the Cowboys gave the number 2 role to Curtis with Fasano off the picture, right? Or the fact that Curtis outproduced Fasano last season?

Fasano is a very average TE, you’re right on that account, but he was still better than Curtis. One of the front page posters over our team blog (Rafael) heading to the 2008 draft said: “don’t be surprized if the team picks another TE… And don’t throw the remote to the TV if it’s high…”.

He has some Cowboys scouts connections and the fact that they took Bennett on the 2nd told me everything that I needed to know, they were still looking for a TE to implement the 2 TE corps that Parcells wanted to use.

Why did we sign an injured player?

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Just another

way for Coupon Andy to say he addressed the addition and be able to save money and draft picks and say that he likes the group and likes the addition. What else is new? Just like he does with the linebackers.

by macjack09 on Aug 25, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

coupon andy...

give it a rest. he believes you win games in the trenches. that’s why he doesn’t pay out huge contracts to skill position players (unless you count westbrook, mcnabb, asante, of course). he signed jason peters in a huge deal. what do you want the guy to do? give every disgruntled player all the money they could dream of?

by eagleyosh on Aug 25, 2009 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoever said that....

I never said to go out and get Brandon Marshall, Anquan Boldin, Julius Peppers, etc. So dont twist my words. I’m not saying get a superstar But fact remains that he puts little emphasis on positions other than QB, OL/DL, and CB. Brian Westbrook developed into a superstar, if we had a Julius Jones, Marion Barber, or a Ronnie Brown it wouldn’t make much difference to Andy as long as they could do the serviceable job at blocking and pass catching. For the tight end position, he went out and got a player that was rejected by Dallas and released by KC AFTER Tony G was traded. I don’t know how I can feel safe with that in my head. I’m more concerned with the linebacking core than anything. Am I saying that he should go out and trade for a disgruntled Channing Crowder, Manny Lawson, or Will Witherspoon? No. Just put more emphasis on it later in the career and stop believing these guys from no name colleges (Gocong, Mays, Akeem, Daniels, Hughs, and White) will come in a be these great linebackers. And also stop trying to convert every player that comes to you to play another position. Is that too much to ask for? Personally I think it would be easier to teach a LB the LB position rather than a DE the LB postion.

by macjack09 on Aug 25, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s not like the guy is starting. he’s coming in to be a backup or even third stringer. our number two who was supposed to be have a great rookie campaign tore his acl…hard to prepare for that.

the linebacking position is a concern, but there’s not much to do when your up and coming superstar MLB tears his acl.

all of that is besides the point though. I took issue with calling him coupon andy, because that insinuates that he is cheap and isn’t willing to spend to get a good player. he is willing to spend, just on who he believes is worth it. whether you agree or not, he thinks curtis will be a good second option and the LBs will suffice. that doesn’t make him cheap. if anything, it just makes him an idealist.

by eagleyosh on Aug 26, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Its hard to prepare for that, but the Eagles have all the pieces to make up for it. As for the Stewart Bradley thing…even before Stew went down I thought we had a weak LB core. I thought Stew was on the up and coming but the 2 guys outside of him were nothing special. Thats nothing new. I was voicing that we should have at least made a play for Leroy Hill because he is a definite upgrade over everyone (except Stew) of our LB’s. I don’t call him coupon andy because he’s cheap. I call him coupon andy because rather than look in free agency and draft high on players that fill in certain positions, he doesn’t. You said he thinks Curtis will be a good second option, well obviously. But past shows that he hasn’t been anything worth raving over. Is he idealist, yes. But do most of his ideas work? Not really. Greg Lewis fielding punts, Dan Klecko and Tony Hunt at fullback, Kolb, LB’s from small schools (except Gaither), Lorenzo Booker. Its my opinion. And in my opinion I have right to question his ideals. I apologize if it offends you. He’s not a bad coach, but he makes questionable moves in certain positions. He thinks the linebackers will suffice, well I think he’ll realize that without Stew and Dawkins to bail them out how weak they’ll be.

BLOCKING TE

If you don’t believe me, watch game film. Don’t watch film like a fan, watch it in order to critique the players you want to break down. For someone to say the kid CAN’T block, you’re talking outta your :x Don’t believe everything you believe on the internet guys. Believe your eyes and not your mouf. Writers write what is their perception and most of the time, people write solely on perception or an idea about what they believe is how their football team would run in their own fantasy world. Tony got cut in KC because under Pioli you don’t make the team if you don’t practice, injured or not… That’s plain and simple. That move was pure Pioli. Todd Haley called Tony and convinced him to sign with them instead of resigning with the cowboys for a chance to play a LOT more. He sprained his ankle and there’s Pioli with the scissors. Oh well, that’s the business. I’m glad Philly signed him even though his ankle is not 100%. Washington had him in last week so I didn’t think he’d make any more visits but here ya go. Welcome to Philly Tony…

I don’t have a crush on him. I have a vested interest.

by Magua831 on Aug 25, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

I've seen every Cowboys game...

… On the past 16 seasons…

I kind of know what a good blocking TE is… For example, Witten is a good blocking TE… Bennett had great moments last season and some awful ones, but he was a rookie and that’s to be expected… Dan Campbell in 2003 and 2004 was great… Fasano was bellow average… And Curtis was waaaay bellow average… David LaFleur had some moments before his injury… Eric Bjornson was a better pass catcher, but a very average TE overall… And finally we get to Novacek, a better pass catcher but a pretty good blocker, he had some vicious combos with Daryl Johnston…

And I’ve said this before the Eagles signed him, I’m in no way intending to bash the Eagles. He’s a decent 3rd TE, but there’s nothing in his past that should make Eagles fans forget that their blocking TE problems are over.

just below?

Just by saying Curtis below Fasano in blocking is silly. You must be watching brail football. Tape don’t lie. One guy blocks with the back of his left shoulder and gets shoved into the backfield, the other stays low, fires his hands and hips into the block and gets good push on the defender.

by Magua831 on Aug 26, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Then, Parcells and Sparano were stupid?

Because they kept playing Fasano over Curtis?

While Curtis only saw the field around 20 snaps per game (including STs plays)?

You have to consider that one of them is a HOF Coach and the other directed one of the best turnarounds for a franchise in this decade.

IMO, their opinion and my own opinion (out of seeing every game) tends to be more valuable, nothing against your film studies…

just checking … Fasano was a 2nd round pick and Curtis was an undrafted free agent so it makes sense that Fasano would be the more sought after option.

Coming from another person who has seen every Cowboys preseason and regular season game for 10+ years straight. Seriously, he can’t block. I’m sorry Ingram got hurt and you missed on Martellus, but Curtis got cut from the Chiefs. That tells you all you need to know about his game.

Right now, Curtis is a camp body for the Eagles

Nothing more, nothing less. You guys are sure to snag a half-decent TE after waivers, and it will not be Curtis.

In fact, Rodney Hannah from the Cowboys might be a good bet, he’s the fourth TE, will probably not make one of the 3 TE Roster spots, and has played fairly well in pre-season so far. 6-6, 258 out of Houston. He’s sure to be picked up immediately.
