Checking up on Jason Peters

Hi guys, CBF here from the Buffalo Rumblings.  I just came over to check in on your (not so) newly aquired left tackle.

Star-divide

I just wanted to know how he was doing in your camp.  Is he the LT that we all think that he can be, or is he looking like he'll be lineing up another 11.5 sack season?  I ask because from what I've been reading over at the Rumblings, and at PFT, and ESPN.com... pretty much everywhere actually... is that Peters showed up to camp severly out of shape (again!) and will be riddle with muscle injuries (again!), as they have already started.

To be totally honest, if what I have been reading is true, the I truly feel sorry for you Eagles fans, as you will now know the headache that is Jason Peters (just as I'm about to find out the headache that is TO).

But honestly, I hope that he does play well for you... just you know, not too well ;-)

Oh and thanks for the draft picks!

Don’t know where you got the “showed up severely out of shape” thing but no one has said that. He currently has a quad injury.

Other than that, not much to say yet.

by JasonB on Aug 22, 2009 3:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A quad injury is the sort of injury that someone would incur if they showed up to camp out of shape, however, especially since he hurt himself during the conditioning run.

I hope it’s not the case, but Peters DID just get paid, and he wasn’t a "work ethic guy to begin with.

Good thing he has talent.

by UnclaimedFright on Aug 22, 2009 6:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

See that why it appeared to me that he showed up to camp out of shape (for the third year in a row). Actually scratch that, he didn’t show up to camp at all last year, and showed up severely out of shape for the regular season.

And I honestly think that Peters may be the most talent LT in the NFL. He just doesn’t have the drive or dedication to bring that talent onto the feild with him on a regular basis. At least that is my humble opinion.

Reid is being cautious in not playing these guys(Peters included). He said “a good number” of the 13 injured players from Thursday night would have played if the game counted. I think that includes pretty much everyone but Andrews.

by JasonB on Aug 22, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope that thats the case for you guys, because Peters did miss big stretchs (both on and off the feild) last year because he was out of shape. He had a way of just disapearing in games for us. I sincerily hope that this changes for you guys.

Ok I actually came here to ask your guy’s honest opinion on Peters so far. I really didn’t mean to stir up shit with anyone. I mean if I can go over to the Phinsider and have an actual respectful conversation with fans of my biggest rivals I figured that I could pull that off here. I guess not.

It IS Philly fans,

and also, Peters is a big part that means a lot to their success. That he’s been such a questionmark has them on edge.

There’s no real backup plan if Peters really does turn out to be a flake (like his bookend mate seems to be).

Unless you consider Winston Justice a backup plan

Winston Justice? Oh you mean the kid who let 6 sacks fly past him in one game against the Giants. Yeah he’s a terrific backup.

by Remis on Aug 22, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, while I’ll admit that my team’s OL is horrible, I wouldn’ be boasting too hard if I was facing the possibility of Winston Justice spending a large part of the season starting at either one of you tackle positions.

And While my team’s offensive tackles are slow and un-agile, they are dependable (aka they won’t give up too many sacks), and the Bills interior line may be one of the meanest in football this year. So while they might not be the best line out there, as long as they can give Edwards 3 seconds to make the throw, then my team will be fine.

Besides, you don’t need a great offensive line to win. I think that both the Steelers and the Cards proved that last year.

Justice is not even a LT backup, he’s a RT. You guys might want to at least glance at the roster before you come on here and make such a sad attempt at a cheap shot.

either Tuck, Osi or Kiwi will make sure he remembers the last time he played the Gints.

Ok guys I get how I could have come across as a troll, believe me, that was not my intention. I am genuinely interested in knowing how Peters has performed and how serious his injury is (since i can’t seem to find any specifics anywhere).

And the “thanks for the draft picks” comment was more refering to the fact that the two picks we got from you this year helped us draft the future of our interior line this year (Eric Wood and Andy Levitre), and not as a stab towards you guys.

I’m saying this because I want to make it clear that animosity was not my goal.

honest opinion....

i think when it comes time to play for real, peters is going to be a stud. with training camp going the way it is, i don’t blame the guy for missing time. he can sit out the rest of the time if means we can keep him healthy for the season. also, i always pull for the bills. good luck this season. i took lee evans as my third receiver in my fantasy draft. so you guys better produce.

Glad to see that not every here’s is disrespectfull (and yes I know that I’m not any better). And thanks for the support for the Bills. Personally the Eagles are the only NFC East team that I can stand. I hate the Cowboys and the Redskins and I think that the Giants are full of it. So you guys win out by default.

As for Peters, in theory that is a good plan, in theory. I honestly hope it works for you, I really do, but if last year was any indication then you might be in rough tourrain. I say this because Peters has shown repeadedly that when he doesn’t play, his physical upkeep goes right out the window. Here’s hoping for you that that was a 2 year thing while in Buffalo.

My beef with Peters lies with how he treated the team in the last year and a half. Now I know that team alligiences don’t mean much anymore, but if it wasn’t for the Bills giving him a shot, he wouldn’t even be in the NFL. And how he treated the team in the last year was discusting; first holding out for the entire camp, then obviously not giving it his all during the season. Then he almost held the team at ransom for a huge contract. It became obvious that he wanted ou of Buffalo. I can accept that. But if you want out, say that you want out, don’t mess with the team for an entire season.

Could it be? The early 90s have something to do with your opinion?

About Peters, I’ve been following the story closely and it’s interesting, especially because he struggled against Ware in their matchup in Peters best season in pass protection…

He indeed has potential to be the best, but he still needs work, work that he isn’t putting on.

I have no idea what could possibly make you think that! LOL

And I’ll totally agree on Peters. To me he’s the type of player that will just put in the required amount of effort to earn his paycheck and not get cut.

From PE.com
Left tackle Jason Peters returned to practice this afternoon and Stacy Andrews, who has been practicing in all non-contact drills all preseason, said he expects to be on the field this Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

T.O., Shmomo

Yeah, we loved him in Dallas, but then ran him out out town too.

Interestingly, the question that always followed his departure was:

How can the [49ers/Eagles/Cowboys] replace the T. O. production?

Why doesn’t anybody ask the question "What will happen once T.O. does not have a Pro Bowl QB passing to him?". Since 2000, with Garcia, McNabb and then Romo, he has had 9 straight seasons with multiple Pro-Bowl nominated QBs passing to him – and passing to him often!

The role the QBs played in helping TO get his stats is vastly overlooked and underrated. Or how do you think he would have fared in, say, Detroit or Oakland?

by One.Cool.Customer on Aug 26, 2009 6:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or how do you think he would have fared in, say, Detroit or Oakland?

Honestly, it might actually be fun to watch Jamarcus Russell sling the ball 50 yards and having TO catch it. Plus TO would draw double coverage, taking coverage away from the already dangerous three headed backfield Raiders have. TO could’ve done lots of good for Oakland if he went there instead of Buffalo.

Of course, it wouldn’t do shit for their biggest problem (stopping the run, ranked 31th in league last year), but it would make a fun offense to watch.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Imp on Aug 26, 2009 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good point

TO in Oakland next year might have been interesting, but they already have DHB, so let’s just sit back and see how that pans out :-)

My thought was the following: If TO would have been with Detroit or Oakland instead of Philly and Dallas (04-08), would he have been able to get the numbers he did? I think not.

by One.Cool.Customer on Aug 26, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And what makes you think that TO can’t do exactly the same thing in Buffalo, where we also have a 3 headed monster at RB (Lynch, Jackson, Rhodes) and a much better supporting cast at WR.

Captain of the "Promote Bob Sanders to Deffensive Coordinator" band wagon.

by CanadianBillsFan on Aug 27, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I really doubt Edward has the arm strength (or anywhere near that of) JaMarcus Russell. That takes the fun of throwing it 50 yards and having TO catch it. lol :)

And you guys don’t have a three headed monster. Marshawn Lynch has 2151 yards in his career, or about 1056 yards a season (mediocre) with a 4.0 ypc (mediocre). Fred Jackson doesn’t even have 900 career yards in three years (although he has a good 4.4 ypc). Rhodes has 840 yards in the last two years and a below 4.0 average. I wouldn’t exactly call that a “three headed monster”.

Not to mention Lynch is going to be missing the first three games of the season because he, quite frankly, is a dumbass.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Yeah

Most of us did too. Hell San Fran and Dallas loved him too, AT FIRST. But like I said he is a CANCER and it takes sometime for him to become a tumor and by then you’ll be willing to part ways with your right arm just to forget his name.

Hence the beauty that is his 1 year contract. The tumour has no time to develop.

Trust me

by Cowboy KILLER on Aug 23, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My two cents

It seems that his injury is pretty minor and he would likely have been playing if it was the regular season, so that part doesn’t concern me at this point. In fact, I believe he will be practicing this week, so I wouldn’t say that he is “riddled with muscle injuries” right now.

As for his level of play, it’s way too early to tell. Still, I’ll try to humor you and speculate base off what I saw in the handful of plays he had in the first preseason game. He did give up one sack to an outside speed pass rush, which was my main concern. Still, he did very well in rushing attempts and was especially impressive in the screen attempt to his side (which is a vital skill for the Eagles).

During passing downs sure he’ll probably get beat off the line sometimes in pass situations, especially since the NFC East has ton of quick pass rushers, but Reid is great about adjusting the OL. Worst case, they’ll probably have someone chip the DE inside into Peters or bring over the LG a little bit more to let Peters go a little wide.

Still, considering that it’s still preseason and the starting OL is still weeks away from being on the field together, it’s too early to determine very much.
