A Response to JIBTA

This is a response to JIBTA's recent fan post on the Vick situation.  Enjoy.

JIBTA posted a rather passionate (some would argue indecipherable) post on the Vick subject.  I thought I would respond.  I have attached several quotes from other posters who SELDOM agree with anything I say, so I hope they don't mind.  The first is from BroadSt, who may have agreed with me once (if that), but I agree with him here.

"i agree, killing a person is much worse than killing a person, but that doesnt make killing dogs inconsequential.now i agree that vick served his time, i just didnt like the way he got to pick up the pieces like nothing happened. whether you think killing a dog is a big deal or not, he still fucked up. i didnt do anything wrong to lose my job, the economy fucked me over. why does this asshole get the second chance?"

FredEx also makes a good point when he writes: "To me, the Vick signing was a like the Eagles drafting a player I didn’t want. He’s here, I’m not happy, I’m not going to suddenly by into the he’s a super elite playmaker hype, but if he does well, and I was wrong, it’s a good thing for the Eagles."

You see, JIBTA, there are a few eagles fans represented on this board who see the Vick signing for what it is...completely foolish.  On this board (which is populated by diehards), you are forgiven for mistaking the vociferous pro-Vick rants of a few to indicate blanket approval by the masses.  This is not so.  The majority of Eagles fans do not want this, and if you need further evidence, note that more people call into WIP than post to BleedingGreenNation.  Those callers made their voices heard in a big way yesterday and on Thursday evening when the signing was made public.  They do not want him, as I also do not.

I can already anticipate some voices (Whodie, EaglesGreen, Censorship Man, etc) who will say, "But EvilBanner, WIP's call screeners callously manipulate who goes on the air, so you are not getting a true public opinion."  This is true to a certain extent, but is it not so that the only people who post to BGN are die-hard Eagles fans who (in most cases) agree with the Front Office on everything?  The Vick post from May is far more instructive reading than any of the current Vick posts.  That post, from the halcyon days when Vick was far, far away from the Nova Care complex, indicated that the majority of us despise Vick for his actions.  But there are many people who are willing to abdicate their personal principles regarding right and wrong for a misguided perception that Vick will actually help the Eagles win.

This is not so.  Vick has never been a "good" quarterback.  In fact, most experts (Ray Didiger included) do not even place him in the "average" category.  I know there are people who think Reid "has a few tricks up his sleeve," because, after all, "we didn't bring him here to sit him on the bench."  But Andy, if that is so, why the hell did you bring him here?  To replace Donovan?  If Donovan spontaneously contracted an advanced case of Lou Gehrig's Disease while having both of his arms slowly ripped off by rabid lions, he'd still be a better QB than Vick.  To replace Kolb?  Hell, if you want to replace Kolb, I hear Pat Ryan or Bobby Hoying isn't too busy these days.  To me, this is a pointless and damaging act by three guys (Reid, Lurie and Banner) who should know better.
