Celek's injury
Hey Guy's
Now with Celek out with an A/C joint sprain, which is the pulled separation of the Acromion and Clavicle conjuction, this leaves a gaping hole at TE. Celek should be fine in a week or two. I know we have all discussed this and it is an important issue, but I want to discuss the possible positive outcome of this injury. In my point of view it is almost a lock that the FO has to make a move for some Veteran TE. Bright looked lost and the other new kid is built like a receiver. I just see with all the moves we have made this offseason{now including MV} I don't see how we would do so much and then leave such an important spot such as #2 TE empty. Then again Klecko was our FB for a little...
Thanks for listening.... Any thoughts?

A 2nd rounder for Gonzales looks more and more like a steal at this point……

Gonzales?
He went to Atlanta.

Maybe you should keep reading before posting...
Hotlanta gave up a 2nd in 2010…..Pretty sure McCoy would have been picked up by then.

no way

Atlanta gave up a 2nd rounder next year.
I wouldnt trade Shady for Gonzo either but the fact of the matter is that its for a 2010 pick. Would you rather have a HOF TE or a late 2nd round pick next year???
by Iggles Fan 4 Life on Aug 14, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Our draft picks were probably worth less, therefore we’d have to give them more. As in it probably would have been a 2nd this year for us. That’s my speculation anyway.
And the HOF argument is a weak one, in my opinion. It’s all about how good you are currently, and how long you can stay at the level.
Would Tony G be awesome still with a new team and playbook? Does he have more than a year left in him?
Would he be better than Eugene Bright??
Absolutely!!!! Thats the whole point of my original post. How would our potential draft picks be any less valuable than a playoff team from last year??? I dont buy that.
by Iggles Fan 4 Life on Aug 16, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions
Eagles have been predicted to be in the Superbowl by several source. The Falcons, not so much. Thats why I speculated that our picks were likely worth less.
And being better than our at best 3rd shows nothing.
WTF????
Usually I think you have pretty good replies FredEx but you are way off base here brother. Gonzo would have been the best TE on our roster HANDS DOWN. My point was that maybe we should have made a bigger push to acquire TG instead of having to rely on a depleted, unproven TE corp. Gonzo would have came in and filled a void for one or two years while Ingram and Celek had the opportunity to develop alongside him. I dont care if you think Gonzo is the best in the league right now, the fact is that he is WITHOUT A DOUBT going to Canton on his first ballot. If you don’t believe that than I want some of whatever it is that you’re smoking.
BTW…..Your agruement for the whole draft pick thing is weak at best. Regardless of whether we were “predicted to be in the Superbowl by several sources” is irrelevant. Atlanta is returning nearly their entire team after reaching the postseason last year. Not to mention their draft class and offseason acquistions. Our draft values couldn’t have been that far apart to mandate that much of a higher pick for a future year.

I never implied the Falcons were terrible, or the value was completely different. It’s not unthinkable to say our picks might have been worth slightly less. If they thought that, then there is a decent chance they might have wanted the 2nd rounder this year instead of next. Like I stated before, pure speculation.
The fact is 2nd can still be very valuable, and if nothing else there is a least a chance it could have cost us this year’s 2nd, therefore potentially costing us McCoy, something I wouldn’t personally do. If you disagree with the whole draft pick asssment, that’s fine and I understand. My point was just that getting Tony might have in fact meant losing on McCoy.
As I mentioned previously, I find the future HOF arguments to be weak. The fact he is a lock to make Canton means he has had a great career, which he has. It doesn’t mean he’s going to be dominate for the next two years for us. HOF players get old and decline eventually. You don’t hire a guy for what he has done, but for what he’s going to do (this is especially true for the Eagles)
The non-trading for Tony G thinking was based on some trust of Celek’s development and his emergence late, and having a young 3rd round TE (or 5th) to have like (Nelson, Ingram, Coffman) for 4ish years or more instead of a rental in Tony G.
Is Tony G a better option for week 1? Most likely is. How long does he hold up for? Is he a better option late in the season? Next season?
Eagles like the play a balancing game of winning now while keeping a watch on the future. If you don’t think Tony G makes you substantially better for this one year, you don’t make the deal (the injuries and depletion and such are all hindsight)
Tony G was great. With another year older does he still have it? Would age, a new city, being in a new offensive, with a new playbook slow him down?
If you don’t believe he puts you over the hump, so to speak, then not acquiring makes a lot of sense.
I was never interested in when the price became a 2nd rounder (regardless of year). Maybe I just really dislike old football players.
Good argument but..
It doesn’t mean he’s going to be dominate for the next two years for us. HOF players get old and decline eventually.
What about his career makes you think that this is the year he will decline?? You have a valid point but he hasn’t even had a period in his career where you can indicate that this would be the year he declines. As you said in another point you made, “pure speculation.”
Maybe I just really dislike old football players
He is 9 months older than McNabb. I can’t classify that as old. Past his prime? Hard to say considering in ’08 he had the 3rd & 2nd best season of his career in receptions and tds respectively.
The only valid argument i will accept is $$$$$.

What about his career makes you think that this is the year he will decline??
He answered this …
Which I think is fair … he has played his entire career in the AFC West and for the most part has been the focal point of the passing game for KC. Many players have moved on to other teams only to diminish or he could be like Jerry Rice and have another 2-3 great years. It’s a risk though probably not as risky with Tony G but still a risk.
Would age, a new city, being in a new offensive, with a new playbook slow him down?

I didn’t realize FredEx had someone checking his replies for him. I will address the both of you next time. LOL. Im j/k.
Would age, a new city, being in a new offensive, with a new playbook slow him down?
If you noticied in my reply, i said
pure speculation.
There is nothing pointing to the fact that he would start to decline other than speculation. There is far too much upside with a player of his caliber. I have watched Gonzo since his rookie year. The past two seasons I have seen an invigorated, fresh, dominant TE. While he has been the focal point of the KC offense, he has also been the focal point of every other opposing teams DC. He was covered by Ndami for god sakes!!
BTW….I said
The only valid argument i will accept is $$$$$.

Everyone declines. There are no facts or information to suggest it will happen this year, and I’m only saying it’s possible. TEs typically decline after 29, according to Football Outsiders. Tony G has been an anomaly, but obviously it won’t last forever. One of these years it will happen. He’s 33. Is it this year? Does he have one more year? Does he have 5? Anything is possible, but just because he’s had a HOF career doesn’t mean he’s a guarentee to continue to be productive.
On old players: 33 is up there for a NFL non kicker. I don’t dislike all old players, but more often then not I prefer to let the old move on (Dawkins, Thomas, Runyan, Not acquiring Tony G)
And are you really blaming money for this? The Eagles trade and sign for Peters, sign Vick, signed past free agents like Asante. Just because they don’t trade for one particular player doesn’t indicate that they are too cheap. They also inquired about him, so his contract was mostly not an issue, it just cost too much in terms of what kind of young talent they could draft. As I previously mentioned they do have a habit/strategy of worrying about the future while trying to field a winner.
Everyone declines. There are no facts or information to suggest it will happen this year, and I’m only saying it’s possible.
Of course its possible, but would he not be worth that risk?? Or is Vick a safer bet?? There are always risks with bringing in new players but you can’t have rewards without risks. Gonzo is/was worth that risk. As I stated previously, he would have a short contract (1 or 2 years) to allow Celek and Ingram to develop, while also adding a dimension to our offense that has been missing for a long time. He would have been another “weapon” on our offense. Isn’t that why we signed Vick (who is really close to your old age mark)??
are you really blaming money for this?
Absolutely. Not in the way you are suggesting though. I have never thought of the Eagles FO as cheap and they clearly were not this offseason. I just feel that the FO thought the combo of the high draft pick and expensive contract was too much for them. That is a valid argument. Do I agree with it?? No way in h-e-double hockey sticks. But I doubt anybody will change my mind on this matter.
“Agree to disagree.”

I don’t think either of us are off base, we just have different opinions neither of which would be moved.
I set my price at no better than the rumored 3rd we were offering when the rumors came up. Is he worth the risk? Likely is. I was personally hoping to use a 3rd-ish round pick on a TE such as we did in Ingram (5th I know) (I liked Nelson a little more, heard bad reports on Ingram’s personality, love of the game which seem to be incorrect) If Ingram stayed healthy it could have been a great non-trade decision. You never know with football.
I think Tony G is/was a safer bet than Vick. Gonzalez is actually good and deserves his hype. The only question with him is for how long, and what is it worth to get him. As of now, I can’t say the same for Vick. He’s average at best as a QB, and I’m not convinced he can contribute in other areas.
But anyways, agree to disagree indeed.
Let’s hope for some (TE) health, a possible smaller scale (or large scale perhaps) trade, and for Celek’s late season emergence to be a sign of things to come.
+1 to Celek
I actually have extremely high hopes for Celek and hope that he continues his post season success throughout season.

I’m saying the Risk that Tony G declines this year or the next 2 years is not worth a 2nd round pick to me. I understand people think it is and that’s cool just not me.

A Wide Receiver
is the last thing the Patriots need. I think they have enough WRs already.

Well
Randy Moss is 32 and Joey Galloway is 37. They could use some youth in that position.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
Fuck Vick.
well Reggie Brown is 28 going on 29 so it’s really a youth movement.

Denver was looking to trade Tony Sheffler
Maybe Reggie Brown and a 5th or 6th for him? Or Lorenzo Booker and Reggie Brown for Sheffler flat out.
Scheffler is an athletic, TE that reminds me a lot of Antonio Gates for some reason. But his blocking could use some work
RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.
Very true
and I get the same impressions as Antonio Gates and also Dallas Clark. And I think the coach’s here could work on his blocking.

As much as I
would like to get The Scheff, we waited to long and reports say he is impressing the coaches with his play. If this were a over a month ago we would still have a chance but to get him but McDaniels said he’s not on trading block anymore.
