Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

An open letter to Eagles fans jumping off the ship

Dear Eagles Fan,

I know you are upset with the Eagles signing Michael Vick.  I know this man has messed up but are you so self righteous that you have never made a mistake?  What Vick did is certainly disgusting and I was one of the upset citizens when this went down.  I also know that I myself have done things I have not been proud of. I am willing to put this aside and look past it to give this man a second chance.

I implore you to give him a chance.  This man went to jail and paid for his crime, there are players in the league who have killed people and no one bats an eye.

Let us support our team in this time of hardship and back them in there decision to give this man a second chance.  If our FO and Team is willing to accept him than so am I.

I have argued both sides of this and maybe let emotions get the best of me what matters now is that we move on.

Sincerely Yours,

Professor Whodie

REC'D

Society determined a penalty for him, and he accepted and served that penalty. Not really sure what more people want from him. It’s like me spanking my kid, sending him to his room, and still being pissed at him after I let him out…

Maybe people don’t think the penalty was tough enough, but at the end of the day, the people that know Vick believe that he is remorseful, and that he is being proactive in giving back to humane societies. Time will tell, but I’m on board with giving a man a second chance….

The good Lord knows I’ve needed my second chances too!!!!

ESPN was dropping emails like crazy from people saying they were no longer Eagles fans so I felt the need to write this.

I was very critical of Vick when this went down but I’m ready to move on.

I can’t believe people would give up on the Eagles over this.

This is my first post on this site, although I have been following it for quite sometime. “Helped” kill two people? I don’t know all the details of that horrific accident BUT I do know that he reached a settlement with one of the guys daughters and an undisclosed settlement with the families. Civil proceedings are one thing but why pay out families if you are not partially guilty? Then to receive MVP the next year?

And one thing that irks me just thinking about it is when the Titans played the Cowboys and Haynesworth stepped on Andre Gurode’s head. That to this day disturbs me. He only forfeited $190,000 and was suspended for 5 games. 5 games? Can you imagine getting stomped on straight to the head without a helmet on by a 350 lb man!?!? He could of killed someone! But no one ever talks about that and now hes making $115 mil! Go figure.

If these guys can move on and be successful, there is no reason why Vick shouldn’t be able to. I do not consent to Vick’s behavior but he’s on our team now and we have to support him. So hopefully after tomorrows game, he shows us hes ready to concentrate on football and we can all move the heck on.

I think it gives us a lot of options on offense, like a dual qb set, with options

I think its good for Vick b/c he can retool his technique and strength under a great qb with a similar style of play & he can go on to bigger & better things….

I totally called this earlier today… i’m just saying…not JIBTA “i told you so”… I brought it up earlier on apost.

What if…
when the NFL declined Nagy’s contract, we signed Vick for a camp arm & released him when he got an offer from another team?

Vick, no reproach

Yes, I agree everyone makes ‘mistakes’, but don’t you have any sense of decency? This ‘man’ abused and killed dogs for a game. What kind of a sick individual should be allowed to even walk amongst others let alone be ‘looked up to’ as an NFL QB.
Maybe if he showed some remorse and donated time/$ to the Humane Society, he’d be taken as a little bit ‘sorry’.

by NYGDOG on Aug 14, 2009 12:10 AM EDT reply actions

First of all, he has no money to donate. He lost all of it. Second of all, he has been donating his time to the Humane Society and other organizations of the like.

I am with you for the fact that I completely despise what he did and I do agree that he needs to show remorse publicly, but people need to give him a chance to do that. He’s barely been out a few weeks. He will speak publicly tomorrow and there will be an interview on ABC, as well as other chances in the future to show his remorse. People need to give him a chance to do that before they jump to conclusions.

Smitty: you say that he has only been out a few weeks, perhaps he shouldn’t be in society with 2-legged creatures until he can be trusted with 4 legged ones, I’d love to get a hold of him and tell him to his face what a wimp of a LOSER he i! It’s unfortunate that he is going to bring the Eagles fans down, when HE should be goin’ down!

He did the crime and he served his time. He has been speaking out agaisnt dog fighting and doing everything he can. He made a mistake but he paid for it, it is time for people to move on. Plus just saying he should not be allowed in society is just a joke.

To those who are ready to jump ship...

Odds are you are the same people that bitch year in and year out about the FO being too cheap, about the FO not signing enough playmakers, about the FO not showing enough desire to win the Super Bowl…

This move is entirely about trying to make the team better. It is entirely about trying to win the Super Bowl. People deserve a second chance. We need to get passed the disgusting, dispicable acts that Vick did on those dogs and start thinking about the endless possibilities that Vick brings to the team.

I hated this move when I first heard it, but after letting it sit I am now okay with it and anxious to see what kinda shape he’s in.

Having said that, keep in mind that the contract has no guaranteed money… if Vick isn’t in good shape or if he acts out in anyway then he can be dropped in a second with no penalty. My one piece of advice before you quit on your team… let it sit for a day or so.

Second chance?

http://www.turfshowtimes.com/2009/6/19/917396/of-pillars-and-paucity-part-1-of-2

Michael Vick had his own history. Of course, it all starts with the company you keep. In 2004, two of Vick’s homeboys were arrested for trafficking marijuana…. in Vick’s car. (That link details some of Vick’s accomplices that were with him from day 1 all the way up to the federal RICO case) There was Watchgate, an episode that saw Vick’s friend, Quanis Philips (who would later be involved in the dogfighting escapade), steal a security guard’s watch at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. There were the misadventures of Ron Mexico, a name Vick allegedly used in seeking medical treatment for herpes after (again, allegedly) knowingly passing it on to a "lady friend." Of course there were the dogs. Most importantly to me, was that even in the midst of the publicity surrounding his case, Vick still failed a drug test. This was not a mistake; this was a pattern.

And Wikipedia has the list in more details:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Vick#Early_incidents

Fail drug test, check. False identity, check. Having sex with someone without telling her he has herpes, check. Killing dogs, check.

So…yeah… This isn’t his first mistake. It’s not going to be his last either. This is going to end exactly like Pacman Jones’ second {*cough*fifteenth*cough*) chance with the Cowboys: an utter failure. Let’s face it: the dude is a douche bag at best.

No, I’m not jumping ships. I’m just extremely disappointed in our FO right now.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

play it out, lets say we rehab him, he turns out alright, but ofcourse we still want to go with #5 nest year. Can we say TRADE BAIT, as good as we are at drafting, he could land us some decent stock if he turns out alright, and keeps his nose clean.

Was Marcus, not Mike.

But yes, trade bait maybe next year. Mortensen mentioned the possibility of that this morning on ESPN Radio. If he works out, he could net us a decent return in a trade, considering that he’s not signed for a whole lot of $ (in football terms, again) next year.

Dungy

Do we all forget that one of the most well respected, dedicated and influential men in football, TONY DUNGY is in Michael Vick’s corner. He has spent a lot of his life dedicated to helping kids in inner cities and knows when someone is trying to pull the wool over on him.

If Dungy believes that Vick is on the right track then count me in as well. End of story.

Vick should read these posts

Michael Vick only cares about his career and money. He shows or has not spoken or done anything to prove he is remorseful. To know that what he did was ‘beyond cruel’, it was inhumane. Perhaps Vick should have been put through the torture-that he allowed those dogs to go through.
Then MAYBE, he’d feel a little bit of guilt or remorse.

by NYGDOG on Aug 14, 2009 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

He shows or has not spoken or done anything to prove he is remorseful.

This statement proves you have not paid any attention.

Vick’s prison sentence for dogfighting ended last month, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced his conditional reinstatement in the league a week later. Since then, Vick has made two appearances — one in Atlanta and one in Chicago — on behalf of the Humane Society of the United States. His alliance with the animal protection group, with which he’ll work to combat dogfighting, was announced in May.

The significance of Vick moving to Philadelphia isn’t lost on the Humane Society’s president and chief executive, Wayne Pacelle. “It’s a city we’ve been looking at very closely because it has a major dogfighting problem,” Pacelle said in a phone interview today with our colleague Sam Farmer. “So Vick’s landing there has the potential to turn around the issue. This gives us a big boost.”

Many initially scoffed at the unlikely partnership between Vick and the Humane Society, guessing that Vick’s willingness to participate in its anti-dogfighting efforts was calculated to regain favor with the NFL. But at least one observer, David Squires of Newport News, Va.‘s Daily Press newspaper, believes the fallen star has truly reformed. His time in prison “made me become a better person,” Vick told Squires in an interview. "Because of what I went through, it’ll make me smarter about everything else now. Not just football."

According to the Associated Press, Vick expressed remorse for his involvement in the Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting ring in a “60 Minutes” interview scheduled to air Sunday. In the interview, he says he feels “some tremendous hurt behind what happened,” adding that “I should have took the initiative to stop it all … I didn’t — I didn’t step up. I wasn’t leader.”

this post

is kind of similar to my wife’s reaction. It’s certainly a valid POV, and it might be where I come down when I’m done sorting it all through.

My brother called me tonight around quarter to nine to tell me the news. As Eagles lifers and people who care about animals, we were both disgusted, and it sat badly with me for a few hours. Watching clips of the Reid and (especially) McNabb press conferences made me feel a little better about it—I’ve always admired #5 as a standup guy and a leader, and that he was onboard with this, even lobbied for it by his own account, matters to me. And I’d be lying if I denied being curious about how they plan to use him.

I guess we’ll all see if Vick is the same cretinous person he evidently was before going inside. It isn’t hard to understand how so much fame and wealth at admiration at that young of an age can turn someone’s head; here’s hoping he has grown up as much as the Eagles must believe he has. We’ll also see if this organization is as “strong” and prudent as they and the national media claim that they are.

You can hate Mike Vick and hate this move. But don’t hate a TEAM that you’ve loved for years and abandon 53 other guys not named Michael Vick that you’ve enjoyed rooting for (or at least tolerated…Matt Schoebel I’m looking at you) faithfully during the Andy Reid era.

I hate the shitstorm of controversy this brings. It’s going to be annoying walking through protesters to get into the stadium (but the Eagles do deserved to get protested for this!) and I can’t till people in the grocery store that I don’t even know are asking me how any self-respecting person can still root for the Eagles.

This will not be fun. BUT MICHAEL VICK IS NOT BIGGER THAN THE TEAM.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

I hate the Eagles, but I always had some modicum of respect for them with their coaches (JJ, Reid, Vermeil) and players (Carmichael, McNabb, etc.), but now, they’ve brought the overall class of this division and the entire NFL down a peg.

Eagles should soar, but not with Vick

My point is that he shouldn’t even be allowed back to the NFL.
One observer feels he is remoseful, gee that tells it all NOT!!
Fantasize all you want over that loser, but he is going to bring nothing but negativity to the EAGLES and their fans. God bless you all.

Here is my simple feeling.

What Vick did was despicable and I think he got off easy. I don’t think he deserves this chance.

BUT, if you disown the Eagles over him, I hope you aren’t a Phillies fan. Because that means you condone beating women. If you didn’t disown the Phillies when Myers beat his wife, then you shouldn’t disown the Eagles now. I am not saying what Vick did wasn’t worse (it was) what I’m saying is that if a heinous crime is worth disowning a team over, follow the logic all the way.

by NOLACuse on Aug 14, 2009 12:55 AM EDT reply actions

I get the comparison—and a lot of us have always felt kind of icky about Myers since then. But it’s not a perfect equivalency: most obviously, Kim Myers evidently forgave her husband, and more than three years later they’re still married, raising their kids.

Yes, the sort of mentality that could contemplate striking a woman, a much smaller one at that, is entirely repugnant. But Brett Myers didn’t kill his wife, he didn’t torture her, he didn’t make her fight other women to the death. The matter was adjudicated and, by all accounts, resolved. The dogs that suffered and died as a result of Vick’s actions and non-actions had no such satisfaction.

by dajafi on Aug 14, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say the actions are comparable.

But if you are willing to disown a team for one, but not the other, you implicitly condone the other. I understand all the differences: Myers didn’t kill anyone, his wife forgave him, etc. It’s still horrible. What Vick did is about 1000x more horrible, true. But if supporting the Eagles means supporting Vick, then supporting the Phillies means supporting Myers. One crime maybe worse (much, much worse) but that doesn’t mean the other is acceptable.

Personally, I think that logic is ridiculous. Supporting the team does not mean supporting every player on it. I actually don’t really care if Vick fails miserably. If he does I hope Reid will have the sense not to play him. And I don’t care if Myers ever comes back from injury. Yea, he’ll help the bullpen, but I think we’ll get it figured out anyway, even if it means a few tense games.

How would you feel if....

The headline read “Michael Vick signs with Dallas Cowboys”? Would Professor Whoodie be complaining about self righteous Cowboys fans who said they were done supporting the team?
The only thing anyone has to do in this world is die. If someone wants to dislike Michael Vick because he bankrolled an organization that tortured animals, they are free to do so. If they don’t want to root for Michael Vick’s employer any more, that is their choice. If they realize that they would react with righteous indignation to a Dallas signing of Vick and recognize that the awful taste in their mouth is rank hypocrissy the moment they find themselves even thinking about rationalizing a home town team signing of Michael Vick (“Sure, Vick is a bad guy, but he wears my team’s color’s, so he is our bad guy now, let’s support him.”), don’t call them self righteous. Call this person consistent. Call this person honest.. Consider carefully your reaction to the question “What if the Cowboys signed Michael Vick?” before criticizing an Eagle fan for asking out loud whether or not a game is worth betraying some other conviction that they might have.

by micka on Aug 14, 2009 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

I came out before Vick signed with the Eagles and said I believe he deserves a chance after I was one of the most vocal about how repulsive his actions were. So yeah I’m pretty comfortable with my stance.

I think it’s pathetic what he has done but I’m pretty sure if half the people condemning him took a look at the skeletons in their own closet they’d be quick to slam the door and lock it before anyone else could see.

And you obviously missed the point of this open letter.

Stallworth got off way too easy in the courts. What you are saying then is is that sometimes we ought to hold people’s past conduct against them, even if they did their time and say they are sorry?

by micka on Aug 16, 2009 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Charles Manson was a burglar, a pedophile rapist, ran a under 18 prostitution ring, and a murderer if you want to put him in the same class as Vick and others than you are delusional.

Second I didn’t say that Vick should be freed, he is free and thus deserves a chance to become a contributing member of society. It’s somewhat insane that you can’t see the difference in a man who served his time and a man still serving.

Jim Johnson 1941-2009

Now you have missed the point

The point is that every person has a line for what they will not forgive. No one forgives Manson, no matter how many skeletons are in their closet. Many will not forgive Vick, and their own imperfections are not relevant.
That you drink beer and play poker ( the hypothetical skeletons I will propose are in your closet for the sake of illustration, no character assasination is meant or implied in any way) does not mean you have to forgive despicable people who do dreadful things. You would not be self righteous if you boycotted a publishing company for publishing a collection of Charles Manson love poetry. You would have just said " this crosses the line for me, and I am not doing business with Publisher X.", and that is your right to do so. That you have occasionally drunk too much beer or lost too much money at cards does not mean that you can’t meaningfully conclude that Manson is a horrible person and anyone who gets what they want by dealing with him ought to be called out (Yeah, that means you Geraldo Rivera) for doing so.
Some people feel that the Vick signing crosses the line for them, and they want out. That is their right. That people are not perfect does not make them wrong to stand by their convictions. You can call out Manson for being Manson, no matter what you have in your closet, and you arte not self righteous for doing so. People can call out Vick for being Vick, no matter what they have in their closet, and they are not self righteous for doing so. They just drew the line somewhere different from where you did..

Actually

I am tired of the way the game.

When I was an assistant coach in college a few years ago, I got stuck with a player from the previous staff. He took a year off with, um, legal issues. He was caught stealing O2 tanks from the geriatric unit at the university hospital. He was allowed back on the team.
This dude stole oxygen from the part of the hospital that treated the elderly. He was stealing breath from grandma, all to make a few bucks selling hot O2 to a local oxygen bar. And, oh yeah, he let down his team, coaches and team mates by depriving them of his services and talents (which is a very small footnote in this matter)because he wanted to make a few bucks by stealing air from old people.
This sorry excuse for a human being and mediocre at best football player was allowed back because that is what the game does. It looks the other way and holds its nose. I was once part of the problem, and I hate that about my past.
I just don’t want to be any part of the problem any more, even as a casual spectator. Football is just a game, no matter how hard we try to convince ourselves otherwise.

I have worked for many companies that hire felons, a lot end up fucking up and either getting fired or going back to jail. If you see it the other way well then maybe your glass is half empty.

The point is

People sometimes change. Normally they don’t. The people that change stand out in our minds because they are the exceptions that prove the rules. ( 95% of the people that enter AA and get through one month in the program do not make it through one year sober. The 5% are the exception. The other 95% are the norm.)
That is why we don’t invite crack addicts to stay in our houses, pedophiles to baby sit or thieves to house sit. Sure, they may do the right thing and be responsible, but let us be honest, we don’t expect that outcome. We would like to see it, but we know the odds are terrible.
Note to the hysterical: These are examples for illustrating a point. No one is being called a pedophile or crackhead or a thief.

If Michael Vick becomes a better person, it is up to him to do so. Nothing that I or you can do can improve him or make him a better person. His struggle is internal and personal and you and I have no part in it.

I am just not inclined to spend my entertainment dollars or free time supporting Michael Vick or his employer/ If Brad Pitt ran BadNewz, I wouldn’t see Inglorious Basterds either.

what you need to do is look back at our season, and look at all the games Plaxico did not play in. (did not PLAY in at all, not games he didn’t start). tell me what you find out. and to supplement that, look at games that Plaxico did not start in…. for example the Steelers game, when the general public, the media, and the steelers knew plax would be benched.

after, research our pass rush from week 13 and on. then compare it to week 1-11. you’ll notice something amazing. and then you’ll understand why we fell off so hard, and why we went and signed 3 line guys.

but this is for another blog

by cybercybe on Aug 15, 2009 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

the highest paid player in the league is Carson Palmer, if you look into it. and if you look into those games I told you to, you would realize that we performed better offensively without plax in the game (not to say we’re a better team without him, though… a team with plax is a much better team than without, this is just how it breaks down). what you would also realize is that our d-line’s efficacy went way down and we couldn’t generate a pass rush (fred robbins injured, tuck injured…).

the point is your entitled to your opinion but this is an analytical and smart football blog, you’re better than just regurgitating what ESPN and casual football fans mistakenly take to be the reason we trailed off at the end of the season and lost to the eagles in the playoffs.

carson palmer or not though, 97 million is a ridiculous number for any Qb to be paid, but in a league where QBs like stafford and sanchez never play a down and ink contracts for 65k, a proven franchise QB is going to get around 130% of that from now and on. The markets trending towards these huge contracts… philip rivers will ask for big money around eli’s or more for sure.

I never said anything about Eli. To the point:

In response to the way you suggested he “chose” dogs: It is not as if Michael Vick invented dogfighting. It was something that he or his friends likely grew up around.

That is not to say that I consider him to be a victim of circumstance, as everybody acknowledges that he is guilty of both federal crimes and animal cruelty. What I am asking you is whether gaining a second chance after beating a defenseless human (i.e. a linebacker beating his wife) and gaining a second chance after committing acts of animal cruelty (i.e. bankrolling a dogfighting ring) are really any different.

I don’t see why one should, in your opinion, get to keep playing and the other ejected from society forever. And I really don’t understand why you draw the line at dogs but not at humans.

I'm not saying he was right

But it doesn’t matter if you shoot, electrocute, drown, etc. whatever (animal or anything that breathes). Murder is murder. And in my opinion, the murders he committed to those dogs was just as bad as hunting for sport or killing a horse because it has a broken leg. Does that mean he was right? Hell no. Does it make it right anyway killing any animal (whether its sport or to get your rocks off)? No. But someone has to step up and say I forgive. In the holy book it says “Forgive and Forget.” But since he’s a public icon people will never let him live it down. You can’t change yourself and convince everyone you’re changed if no one gives you a chance. I got a rap sheet longer than the lyrics for Rapper’s Delight. And when I finally wanted to change someone said ok. We’ll give you a shot. Now, I’m one of the top students in the state of Tennessee and studying to become a Neurologist. At least give him a chance is all I’m saying. And I’ll be one to give it to him.

But on the who Dog Killer thing…. I was ready to hang him right off the bat but he paid his debt, and what can you say? Dungy who i believe is one of the greatest judges of character ever!

It’s actually kind of fun. Grab the biggest knife you can find, push it gently through the live lobster’s back, and pull it directly through the middle of its face. Then wait for it to stop squirming before you rinse it out and put it on the pan. Make sure to use plenty of clarified butter!

I dont think this guy has paid until hes out of the NFL. He doesnt belong in Green. Its an honor he doesnt deserve. I will support My Eagles but not this decision. I dont like the vibe it brings. He may work out great but I love my Eagles for alot of reasons and one is I know Im always cheering for a good guy, this is no good guy and a yr in a cushy white color prison wont change that. I agree he should be out of jail but I dont agree with him as an Eagle, just like I dont think possesion, manslaughter, spousal abuse, weapons charges, assult, and Staroid use should be a slap on the wrist.
This is a job, an amzing job where you have to accept responsabilities like any job- in this particular job you serve as a abbasador for your city and a role model (you know it going in)- ecspesialy if your a QB. I dont want this guy represnting the City of Philly. Thats fine he got his 2nd chance but in our society your second chance is being aloud to become a citizen again not a multi million dollar contract QB for a superbowl contender. Sure he served his time now hes out so Godell and our FO says ok yuor good enough to represent us again. The NFL policy is still a joke.

Do you mean Leavenworth Federal prison? The man did two years in FEDERAL prison. I dont know if your just not intelligent enough to grasp what the means or you just want to turn a blind eye to the facts but either way you sound stupid with that remark. Look I dont know how I feel about this signing myself. I think he deserves to play because he served his time. Whether you can acknowledge that or not it is a fact. Right now, as a fan, im more concerned about how he fits into the Eagles game plan. Does he take throws away from McNabb? Does he take carries away from Bwest and Shady? Does he take receptions from DJax, Curtis, Avant, Celek, or even Maclin? I dont know but I hope not. Even considering all that… the man CANNOT be in football shape at this point. It’s just impossible. There is alot of crazy talk going around for a guy that we probably wont even see on a gameday until late October early November. If you are a fan you support your team… WHENEVER. Thats how it works. You can hate Vick all day but guess what the man is an Eagle now so get over it.

Pause

All of you need to pause and think. This man made a mistake, he acknowledged his mistake and he paid the price. Now, he is just trying to make it back to his prior livelihood and play the game he loves.

Now, I know that none of you would ever put yourself in such a position but just imagine for a second, what would you do if you were in his situation?

Michael did something wrong, haven’t we all? He deserves a second chance just like everybody does. If you were in his shoes wouldn’t you want people to understand? Wouldn’t you want people to leave you alone and let bygones be bygones? Wouldn’t you want people to understand that you’re sorry and that you’re truly regretful?

All of you who are bashing him and claiming that you are done with the Eagles should be ashamed of yourselves because not only are you proving to be self righteous, but you’re also proving that you’re fair-weather and front runner fans. Toss aside your self righteous attitudes and support your team in a time where they’re going to need all the help they can get and more importantly support a human who has the weight of the world on his shoulders.

hello all

I can honestly say I was probably the most vocal anti-Vick person on this board. I even wrote a post about how he is a terrible human being, not just because of the dogs. However, to those eagles fans jumping ship, just realize that there is a genuine possibility he changed. The eagles have been known to keep a classy organization and shy away from controversy. The fact that they felt comfortable signing him to me indicates that he may have actually changed. My judgement is clouded by 21 years of eagles fandom, but it can’t end now. I know I won’t love Vick like I love the rest of the eagles, but I trust the team to do what’s best. Go eagles (and that statement now includes Vick).

For everyone who is making light of his 23 months in federal prison I invite you to go comit a felony and serve just 1 month and tell me if it really was as “cushy” as you believe.

If Vick messes up not being an Eagle is the least of his worries he is on probation for 3 years during which if he fucks up its back to federal prison to serve the rest of his time (4 years)

Wouldn’t survive 1 day in Leavenworth.

It’s a 1 year deal that’s probably going to be worth $1.3 million in the end (I’m going on the assumption the suspension will end after week 3). In football terms, he’s not getting a lot of money. And if he screws up, the Eagles wash their hands of him, and he’s back in Leavenworth.

Look. He’s got Tony Dungy in his corner. He’s got the head of the Humane Society in his corner. That’s good enough for me.

I just want to make a point about your letter. First let me say I am all for giving the guy a second chance, hell I don’t even think he deserved the 6 week suspension, now that doesn’t mean that I wanted to sign him on my team, but he deserves to play. My problem with your letter is that he did not make a “mistake” a mistake is one lapse in judgment, this was premeditated, thought out, and planned. He knew what he was doing was A) wrong B)illegal anc C) inhumane, or else he would not have gone through the lengths he did to try an cover it up.

From my standpoint, he did his time he has apologized for his actions (and they seemed sincere) and he should get a chance to play again.

Good luck with Vick, hopefully not too much luck, and we’ll see how it all turns out.

he had a lapse in character, which is shown through the number of bad choices he made in the past, including the company he kept and things he did

i truly believe his time in prison and with tony dungy humbled him enough to rebuild his character and become a better person and member of society

i just really hope he doesnt prove me wrong

Really?

“I may agree with you on (B), but not on (A) and ©. I hate to say it, but he was brought up in a culture where dogfighting was considered to be just something you did.”

Just because he grew up in a certain “culture”, saying to him it wasn’t “wrong” or “inhumane” JUST because of where he grew up, that sounds a little racial. We know where Vick grew up, and lumping all of these people together as not caring about dog fighting could easily be seen as a racial stereotype.

This is all I’m going to say regarding the Michael Vick signing.

From a football standpoint, great move. Got him for next to nothing, and he is an enormous weapon no matter how you use him. And no, you don’t just lose talent like that after 2 years – it’s still there, you’ll see.

From a moral standpoint, I could care less what he did in the past. The important thing is that he is remorseful, rehabilitated, and actively pursuing a different life for himself. He has done everything required of him by society, so let the man pursue his craft, damnit. And for the record, I am a dog owner.

Finally, why are so many people disappointed in the Eagles for this move? If anything, you should be proud of Reid and Mcnabb for going out of their way to support this trouble guy. This is a great situation for Vick to be in, and I’m glad our franchise is able to give him the extra support he needs to move on with his life.

I am so proud of the Eagles for being willing to bring in Vick to help him get back on his feet. The Eagles Organization is and has been one of the most quality and stand-up franchises in the NFL for years. I love that they take qualify character into such strong consideration. If anything, it makes total sense to bring Vick in to be apart of a team that, character-wise, is the NFL model and to be mentored by guys like McNabb.

This says a lot about the Eagle’s commitment to the important aspects of life beyond football.

I wont

leave the eagles for anything.. REAL fanhood is for life and you stick with your team through the 0-16 season and the 16-0 seasons. You stay with them whether they trade away all there good players or take a flyer on a man(vick) who did something horrible but payed heavily for his crime..

Im glad the eagles gave him a chance, I was shocked at first but the more I thought about it the more I figured it could be a good thing…

Once again Im not angry about this, the man served a 23 month sentence plus a few months of house arrest, he is also in debt BIG TIME… Goodell seems to trust him now so I think we should.

I say Eff those pussy’s who leave cuz Vick’s here, they can go root for the Steelers and Pats but when we smack them all over the place they better not return…

EFF ’EM WERE WINNING IT ANYWAY!!!!!!!

Don't say "No one bats an eye", Professor.

Incorrect. I bat an eye at the felons and murderers in the league. It’s abhorrent. Goodell may be a little harder on crime than his predecessors but the NFL is still desperate for clean-up. In my opinion, criminals — in particular, violent criminals — should be banned from the league. These guys were my heroes. These guys ARE my children’s heroes.

My initial reaction was shock and f this, so I can understand why people would think this way. But after reading a bit more on the whole thing, I think that is a pretty poor attitude. First, Vick has a lot of stand up guys pulling for him, including Tony Dungy, McNabb, a lot of the players throughout football etc. Second, I dont understand the move from a football sense, but with the recent and unexpected injuries to the team, it makes you realize that in the NFL you need good plans C and D. You never know what is going to happen, and the roster spot might be worth it. Going along these lines, using Vick as a run first QB (I mean him running) might not be such a bad idea. McNabb can still play, but there is nothing wrong with giving him a few plays off every now and then. That way, he can stay fresher longer, which can only be good. Westbrook is sort of in the same boat, and McCoy is a rookie, and Buckley/whoever else shouldnt be relied on heavily. Add in Weaver and that is a pretty deep running game, which is probably one of the most underestimated things to have on a team. Its just a simple fact that guys get tired, and that depth and less plays for everyone will help guys stay fresh. Freshness, everything else being equal, will improve the play of everyone on the team.

Also, I am really worried/hopeful that the O Line comes together. They could be so awesome, and it would be a shame really if they were just mediocre. I realize that is a tangent.

One thing I actually do like

Whether or not you like the decision on Vick, one thing I do love and its that just about every time I turn on Comcast, or ESPN, they are talking about the Eagles. As Jerry Jones put it so delicately, who cares if its bad press – its still press.

And while I’m typing a post, I think Stallworth should go to federal prison for 23 months for that terrible performance he had with the Birds…glad we got rid of THAT guy.

Mistake?

having a bad night with the boys can generate a mistake. 6 years of cruelty is the man. he’s a pervert who got off on death and torture. mistake my ass.

ray lewis- i saw some quotes on here that were totally made up. he’s innocent. he made a one night mistake. wrong place wrong time wrong “friends”. could happen to anyone if their drunk and hanging with dudes they don’t really know. i doubt ray knew anyone would pull a knife. obstructing justice charge? pick your poison- nark on gang members or mislead police. trouble either way. ray got a great lawyer sorted it out and won. one night.

jamal lewis- a “friend” called and asked where they could get drugs. he told them. OMG. lock him up. call any college dorm and ask where you can get some weed. BFD.

did ray or jamal carry their actions out for 6 years. no. young dudes making rookie mistakes. vick- older, “team leader” with premeditated and long lived crimes. mistake?
have fun and paint this as rosey as you want to if it makes you feel good about your teams ownership.

LOL he rolled over on two of his friends in order to get the murder charge dropped. Get your facts straight bro.

Jamal Lewis help set up the drug deal he didn’t just point him in the right direction. So who is painting rosey pictures. Listen what Vick did in funding the dog fighting and allowing it to happen is despicable and I’m not defending that. I am defending his right to move on and make amends just as Ray Lewis was allowed to and Jamal Lewis and countless others.

To all the Eagles fans jumping ship

I throw you exploding life vests.

You don’t deserve to be football fans if you don’t root for your team based on this.

well Im a football fan

I hate the Eagles (and Cowboys….the Cowboys much more tho….), but if your a football fan and jump ship from a team, you don’t deserve to watch football.

Granted there are plenty of people that do this, but as a diehard Giants and football fan, they make me sick (at least when the game’s on….given that most of these folks are females, I can’t rip on em….)

Does this mean he gave the dogs herpies too?

By the way im on ship as i said before, i dont totally root for this guy because giving someone a person an STD knowingly is attempted murder… isnt it? And lets not mention the dogs.

All in all everyone deserves a second chance, and i have faith in the F.O becides that CURSE of a quote from banner.. bla bla bla most talent .. yea all the talent is sittting on the BENCH

You can’t die from herpes, so no its not attempted murder.

Ok some of the talent is sitting on the bench…. ALOT of guys are sitting on the bench… I saw we sacrifice booker and use the parts to rebuild the injured team

by Qu1nTeR on Aug 21, 2009 11:13 AM EDT reply actions

I agree we

should sacrifice Booker but mixing his parts with our non-sucky player’s parts will infect them with bookers sucky-ness… We need so sacrifice someone with some sort of talent and ability thats just underutilized… Reggie Brown maybe?

Do Andy's sons deserve a second chance?????

I wonder how many people who are against Vick joining the Eagles have the guts to tell Andy that his sons don’t deserve a second chance. How many have the guts to do that? Based on Andy’s press conference, he started looking at Vick’s situation around the same time he had to deal with the drug charges against his sons a couple years ago. If anyone remembers, that was a down year for the Eagles. Andy’s mind wasn’t in the game and the team suffered….which is understandable. He had to be in court with his sons and coach the team at the same time…….How many of you would leave your job to be in court with your son/daughter if they had been arrested for drugs.??….or would you have turned your back on them and say…..‘they don’t deserve a second chance". Andy loves his sons, he stood by his sons, he supported his sons. He had to deal with the court system because of his sons. His sons went to jail……Now…..I dare those who are against Vick being on the team to go up to Andy and tell him his sons don’t deserve a second chance. We all know the affects of drugs, the lives that are lost because of drugs….what drugs can do to a peson. In my opinion anyone who deals with drugs is a low life…..but, if they are looking to turn their lives around, they deserve that chance. Andy’s sons deserve that chance. I’m also a dog lover. I’ve had dogs and cats all my life…but I also believe that Vick deserves a second chance. Hmmmmmmmmm….wonder how many of those jumping ship have skeletons in their closet that they’ve been hiding….hmmmmmmmmmm……….
