Think and contextualize -- don't react

I can tell the storm is already brewing and it's going to be a big one. So, we signed Michael Vick -- I understand why that might strike nerves with a few people but let's just think for a second.

a) It's a one year deal, if he acts up he's gone faster than he runs away from lineman.

b) He served his sentence in jail, still serving other oustanding debts to the court and lost all his money. In other words, he's paid his debt. Every great spiritual leader including Jesus, Krishna, and the Great Budha said the ultimate act is the act of forgiveness. I guarantee he's on a short leash (no pun intended) and will pay more prices if he doesn't shape up.

c) He has the opportunity to make this team better. You can never have too many play makers on the team (have you guys noticed all the injuries we've had)? Many of you will be the first to execute the GM for not getting enough talent via draft or FA when we don't win.. Furthermore, many of you will go on to claim how cheap the FO is.

d) Don't bring up Dawkins or Tra Thomas. We replaced Tra with an all pro Tackle and we offered Dawkins a lot of money. In my opinion, the money we offered Dawkins was already slightly over paying for a 37 year old.

e) Do you guys REALLY think that they brought Vick in to challenge McNabb for a job? Get real.

f) No one cares if you're not rooting for the Eagles or protesting in some fashion.

Just relax, 5 CGs in 8 years, I think the FO has a good handle on how to run a team... More so than a mob of angry Eagles fans.

The deal is two years for cap purposes

It’s actually a 1-year deal. He’s not going to see the $5.2 million option. If he’s good, the contract gets renegotiated. If he’s not, he gets released.

Thank you

Finally some rationality here.

well written joe and i agree. Further more Tony Dungy of all people would not have attached himself to Vick as a responsible party had he not seen\thought that Vick learned his lesson

Thank you

For posting a rational post instead of: OMG I’M NEVER ROOTING FOR A TEAM FULL OF DOG RAPISTS EVER AGAIN! MAILING IN MY FAN CARD HOW COULD THEY DO THIS TO ME???!?!?!?!:!?

Maybe this will weed out some of the crappy fans we don’t want anyway.

The Vick signing is great and brings so much versatility to the team with an already dynamic offense. Having Jackson, Westbrook, Vick, McNabb, Celek, Curtis all out on the field at the same time will give Defensive Coordinators head aches all season long.

I love the Eagles

I hate what this does to our image, Im not a nut job who is pushing histeam to the wayside I just dont like Vick. I didnt like hiom before the Dog thing and the Dog thing made me hate him. I Bleed green and I am thinking rationaly- this is going to be a disturbance. please dont question my fandom because of what I said- I am a tru Die hard Philly man and because of that im intitled to say that I dont like this move.
Vick does not embody the image of the Eagles, and with everything changeing on this team I think it looks ugly. I have faith in myt birds but like I said I dont respect the guy and I hate the idea of him oin Green

Point F is my favorite. No one gives a damn if you stop rooting for the birds. One less person ahead of me in the ticket line

And PETA is a screwed up organization that will fight to death over whether you left your dog in the car for 15 minutes on a hot day, but is composed of people who are openly pro abortion.

How the hell does that work?

I am an Eagles fan... therefore I am now a fan of Mike Vick

The PETA

The PETA wants us to kill livestock painlessly, right?… show me a painless way to kill cows fast enough to meet the demands of 300 million hungry Americans, please? the food chain is a cruel thing, indeed, but it is what it is.

ill be with you… we shall wage war on the hypocritical semi-hippies known as “peta members”

Nothing to do with abortion

It’s irrelevant. But PETA has killed far, far more dogs than Michael Vick ever has (google it). That’s relevant.

I hunt, I hate peta

But I still hate mike vick. There’s a difference between killing an animal, bringing it home and eating it, and what he was doing. To me, dog fighting is not that big of a deal. Tax evasion, lying, illegal gambling, drugs, and all the other shit he’s done in his past is why I don’t like him. I just plain don’t like his character and his “talent”. Plus I feel that the eagles didn’t need this kind of PR hit. Save that crap for the cowboys and raiders

But the Vick signing is an example of how cheap the FO is

I appreciate what you’re saying, Joe D. We are all doing a lot of reacting, myself included. I just wanted to say that us signing Vick is the PERFECT example of how cheap the FO is. We won’t pay for the athletes that all of the other teams want — we’ll sign the one no one will touch with a 10 foot pole. Because he’s inexpensive (relatively).

It’s like the “mad cow disease” scare. Everybody stops buying beef. Until the grocer cuts prices by 85%. Then suddenly the risk seems worth it.

we’ll sign the one no one will touch with a 10 foot pole

LOL you realize it’s being reported that the Bengals had already offered him a contract and he chose the Eagles because of the reputation of the organization and the leadership. Not to mention he had calls from other teams too.

Peoples continual criticism of the FO being cheap is the funniest thing to me. All of a sudden being smart with your money is being cheap but throwing it around like Dan Snyder is “trying to win a Superbowl” …

Additional we had a team a lot of people liked, and many thought were potential Superbowl contenders. They could have sat on their hands and spent nothing more, but instead they spent some money to try to make the team better.

I just wish the Raiders or Cowboys had picked Vick up

Good point/well said Whodie and FredEx. This is all good….we are talking this out as fans, together. Look, I am just hurting because we signed someone who I am personally ashamed to have signed. We were in a good place!! Why of all the 32 teams did WE have to take Vick?? Let me put it this way: When Vick is on the field in an Eagles jersey, I will be rooting for the Eagles but also rooting for Vick to get decimated. And if/when Vick scores, I won’t know what to feel. And I think a lot of Eagles fans feel the same way.

Vermeil never would have signed Vick. I believe Vermeil went on to win the big one (albeit with another team) in significant part because he is the type of guy who would never sign a guy like Vick. It’s not worth it to win that way.

by LordCarmichael on Aug 17, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s funny you said

Vermeil never would have signed Vick.
because you must of missed when Vermeil came out and said

“If I needed a quarterback, I’d sign Michael Vick,” Vermeil told the station. "First off, we know he’s a talent, he’s taken a team to the NFL playoffs.
“I would sign him in that, when I was around him personally, in broadcasting, he came across as a humble, good kid.”

Before the Eagles signed him.

I'd say yeah

Very similar at least… In the end if we win games, get into the playoffs, and potentially win the big one… all the baggage that vick comes with, goes away.. it’s funny how that happens

Representing CANADA eh?
