Breaking: Eagles sign Michael Vick to 2 year deal

This new is just breaking as we speak. Michael Vick's agent has confirmed to ESPN that the QB has signed a two year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sal Paolantonio called into ESPN news and says that half the crowd at the Linc has abandoned their seats and taken to the concourse just to talk about the signing and get what news they can. He said he's never seen anything like it. Sal speculated that Kevin Kolb's injury could be worse than originally though, but he stressed that that's pure speculation.

Vick's agent has confirmed that Vick is in Philadelphia right now and will meet the media tomorrow.

I understand that this is a big story that is going to generate a lot of passionate response. I welcome all views, but I simply ask you to please be mature about it.

[Note by JasonB, 08/13/09 9:12 PM EDT ] Contract details have leaked

Vick will earn $1.6 million this year with a $5.2 million option for next year. It seems to me that he's a cheap insurance policy for this year and likely gone next year. I don't see the Eagles keeping him around for $5 million next year.

[Note by JasonB, 08/13/09 9:29 PM EDT ] More details...

ESPN is reporting that Vick arrived in Philadelphia on Tuesday and was here all day Wednesday. He will be allowed to participate in all team practices and activities and will be allowed to play in the team's two final preseason games. After that he will start to serve his suspension

The Eagles started negotiations about a week and half ago, before Kolb went down with an MCL sprain. Sal Paolantonio quoted a senior Eagles official who said

"Andy Reid has a specific visions for Mike Vick in the offense, we're not just signing him to sit on the bench."

Tony Dungy will be beside Vick when he meets the Philly media tomorrow morning.

[Note by JasonB, 08/13/09 9:37 PM EDT ] Over the past few days the Eagles have reportedly started to do community outreach in anticipation of the Vick signing. They've reached out to local animal rights groups and shelters as well as talked with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter before signing Vick.

[Note by JasonB, 08/13/09 10:12 PM EDT ] More on Vick's suspension. Roger Goodell has said that the latest he will decide whether to re-instate is week 6 of the regular season. There is no minimum for the suspension. If Goodell is satisfied with what he hears from Vick, Reid, Dungy ect... He could allow Vick back in week one. He could also decide to not re-instate Vick if he doesn't like what he hears.

hunters

plenty of nfl players hunt. they sell meat at the supermarket. it’s not 1754. why is dog fighting worse than hunting when u don’t need meat? gimme break.

by DeafJesse on Aug 13, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

That is just stupid. I hunt. I can’t get deer meat in the supermarket. On top of that the animals being hunted have a sporting chance to get away. We don’t lock two deer into a small chamber to watch them fight each other for the “sport” of it. Just because you are too nearsighted to understand the difference dosen’t mean you should post such an ignorant view. Equating what I do by sitting in a tree for hours with a bow and taking the life of an animal that I am gonna eat vs. someone betting on two domesticated animals ripping each other apart are hardly the same.

This guy is crazy^^^

How can you say that he shouldnt be banned for life.

Its like I always said. If I am convicted of a crime I will lose a job that pays me 38,000 a year, but he was convicted of a felony and still gets to make Millions. I dont get it to be quite honest with you. Just think about it. He is a convicted felon and he is allowed to play something that he loves to play and get paid for it. What does that say to the kids growing and looking up to NFL players as role models. “Hey I can be like Vick, do crime and still get paid millions.”

I know the argument will be, “People change” bull he knew what he was doing was wrong and believed that since his name was Michael Vick that he would be able to do what he wanted to do.

And I am a crazy die hard Eagles fan but this just has me dumbfounded

and if one of them made a mistake, I would be pleased to see him or her get a second chance.

I most certainly wouldn’t label him or her for life as a lost cause/thug/whatever. I can understand not wanting to root for him, not wanting to see him regain his previous status in life, but understand that there ARE people who believe in second chances (and third chances), and not just for athletes … and that doesn’t make THEM bad people either. Maybe just a little too trusting about human nature.

Mike Vick is a human being

You know all this talk about M Vick is crazy. You know when someone is convicted of a crime they go to jail and they serve there time. The only thing is M Vick is a celebrity. I agree with you that people would hope that a judge and society would give their kids a second chance. Isn’t that what religion is all based on? God forgives and forgets. I just think people are going overboard with this. Would people be reacting this way if this man was white. I heard a sports announcer say he was shocked about the signing. You know. People need to realize that life goes on. All these people who are mad about Mr. Vick’s dog fighting issues need to get a life. There are millions of people around the world starving to death. What about helping to feed the hungry? Save a human life. I like animals but do we as humans value a human life over a dog? Come on please let’s put this in perspective.

Me too

I have been a fan since 1976. This disgusts me and Andy Reid clearly deserves to have the family problems that he has. There are very few things less important to me than an Eagles SB. I have always been proud that Andy supposedly only brought on high character guys. It was obviously a lie on his part. He may have paid his debt to society based on the law but he certainly cannot be perceived as a decent human being.

Throw out the moral argument that I know most of you disagree with, how does he even help this team? Does he play RT? LDE? Tight end?

Good bye Bleeding Green. It’s been great being a part of this but I refuse to do it now, no matter how hard it is.

by Dawk on Aug 13, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

So what's the line for you?

What do you think is “acceptable” and what do you think should cause a player never to get a second chance?

If serious, you’re not, and you never were, a real fan. Period.

by wildcatlh on Aug 13, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Second chances

I believe in second chances – but shouldn’t he pay his dues and do something worthwhile for society for a few years? Give him 10 years of community service and then consider him as a role model for our kids. To hand this man $1.5 dollars after he behaved like an animal is a ridiculous decision by all involved. I am going to have a hard time respecting the Eagle’s admin at this point. If anyone knows how the players feel about it, please do let me know..

by melvinthecat on Aug 13, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

My line might be different but we all have one

I laugh at all the bashing I have gotten because of how much I disagree with this move. Eagles fans bashing other Eagles fans, saying I am not a real fan, etc. Hilarious. I can bet I have shown more loyalty towards this team than most on this site. Especially the ones ripping on me who I have never even seen a post from before.

I would guess everyone has that “line.” If he raped and killed your daughter would you want him to have a second chance? I understand that is the ultimate extreme and far worse than what Vick did but it is just said to make a point. I think we all have some point where we would say this is not the right thing to do, no matter how loyal we are. And if we feel strong enough about that point (see the daughter analogy), then you feel you have to take a stand, no matter how hard it is. So to say I was never a “real fan” is “retarted.”

As to the arguments about Donte, Ray Lewis, Little, who said I wanted them on my team either? I sure didn’t. That does not even get into the intent issue which everyone sweeps over out of desperation for wanting to feel that because the Eagles did this, it is ok. If Rae Carruth was free and available, of course I’d be 100x more pissed if the Eagles signed him.

As to showing the support of the other 52 players, this was never about the players for me. This is about what the organization did and what it clearly stands for. I am not anti everyone who disagrees with me. I am not a PETA supporter. I am not anti McNabb. I AM anti the people who made this decision and it disturbs me to no end. And I am not even saying I want Vick to continue to be crucified. The media exposure over this was absurd. That does not mean I want him on my team, nor do I want my kids to see me cheering for a team that says, “Hey, what you did was ok, as long as you say, ‘Oops, my bad.’ Here’s a few million…”

And again, getting back to football, I don’t see him as the missing link. We don’t even have a starting caliber tackle at the moment, we have one tight end who was signed last week because no one else wanted him, and we have a kicker who cannot make a field goal past 40 yards. He does not solve those problems and I don’t see him making a big difference for this offense. Is that worth all this?

Honestly, what I hate the most is that this has been something very important to me for my entire life. I will admit that I won’t be able to stop watching. It is part of my DNA. I will want the team to win, despite my earlier comments. But I won’t do it with the same passion I have always had. And I refuse to financially support the Eagles while he remains on the roster.

Vick did a horrible thing, and you may consider this move to be horrible on many levels, but don’t take that out on Westbrook, McNabb, Jackson, Akers, or any of the fine upstanding citizens on this team that you’ve rooted for many years.

I'll say...

That I was a big fan of Vick before the whole dog fighting scheme. I am a big person on forgiving people because I work at an alternative school full of kids who half have done jail time for a myriad of things. I am really excited to see Vick being picked up by the Eagles. I think he deserves this chance and I’m glad my team gave it to him!

by justyn725 on Aug 13, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

It is surprising

how many people apparently don’t believe in second chances, although I bet that number grows when people get behind a computer screen.

I guess it’s easy to say you believe in redemption when it wasn’t your dog/family member that got hurt/killed, but it’s just as easy to say you don’t believe in it, that this guy is evil forever and incapable of change.

This might sound stupid, but sometimes I think people on their second chances are more trustworthy than some of us on our first. They know the stakes and what they have to lose.

Safest place for a dog right now is near Mike Vick. Dude won’t even look at one funny.

My guess is...

maybe Kolb’s injury is a bit more serious than was reported. Maybe he is back up insurance. Or, I know it’s a hefty price, but maybe he was signed to keep him out of the camp of opposing teams… ie the Redskins (D Snyder loves grabbing headlines more than he loves winning).

I’m not sure … I’m still in shock.

by J800 on Aug 13, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

First off, we already run the Wildcat

with DeSean Jackson, as opposed to Maclin.

Second, DJax threw an ugly INT in the end zone to then-Brown Sean Jones last year, so I think we see the value of having an actual quarterback run the Wildcat.

Plus we’re obsessed with speed, and in theory Maclin is on the field along with DJax, Westbrook and Kevin Curtis when we run this package. YOU match up with that.

I believe the Birds said they didn’t “bring him on to ride the bench.” And for the PR hit they are going to take, they’d better get a return on this buy-low investment.

Over the last few weeks/months since he got out of jail, most people have come over to the “he deserves a second chance” line. If he’s truly remorseful, which it seems like he is, and he’s truly working to stop this kind of thing from being done by other people, which it seems like he is, he’ll play. If not, he’s not getting reinstated by Goodell.

Seriously. Did Kolb look that unimpressive in camp or are they that worried about his injury? Has Andy had his fill of A J Feeley? Or, does he keep Weaver and Kyle Eckel as fullbacks, Westbrook and McCoy as RB’s, and use Vick as an extra RB/QB/Wildcat specialist?

Ok, who’s going to be the first to get a Vick jersey?

RB/WR/QB/Wildcat

Think of this. McNabb, Westy, Desean and Vick all on the field for a play. That’s absolute mayhem. Who do you cover? Anyone of them (assuming the talent is still there in Vick) can take it to the house. Maybe have Vick as a WR, have both him and Desean come back for a double reverse. I’m getting giddy with all the possibilities that Vick (stigma asside) brings to this team.

He's going to do more than that

And he may play sooner than week 6. Goodell said he would make his final decision BEFORE week 6, not AT week six. Most analysts agree that Goodell will probably fully reinstate him sooner than week 6. Also he’s been in jail for two years, do you know what you have to do all day in jail? Workout. I bet he’s in good shape and will be ready to go pretty soon, plus he used to play in a west coast offense.

He’s going to be in more than 1 down a game. He is going to be in a lot because he is a playmaker, QB/RB/WR put him in wildcat formations, he can do a lot for this team.

Agreed

Most of the analysts (who may or may not be full of bull) agree that he will probably be reinstated before game 6. Plus Dungy and Goodell are firmly in his corner, they want him to succeed.

Agree or disagree with this move but you cant deny that this is going to be a huge distraction to a young team in need of cohesion.

McNabb had suggested before that he thought Vick deserved another chance. I’m sure he knows that Vick isn’t on the team to compete for a starting QB job. First off, the offense Philly runs opposed to what Atlanta ran with Vick is way more technical. No way could Vick come in and take McNabb’s spot from him. My guess is Kolb is more hurt than they reported.

well, i mean I run less risk of certain illnesses and ailments. And statistics have shown that it adds a couple years onto ones life.

let me clarify a little. I also don’t have oily foods, salty ones, etc. My dad had a heart problem for many years and I was raised to eat in a healthy diet way. I guess its more of the way I eat, as opposed to what I eat.

Statistics may show a correlation of a longer average lifespan but that doesn’t prove it’s because you don’t eat meat. I’d wager it’s because you watch what you eat more than the average person. You’re taking the average lifespan of vegans versus the average lifespan of non-vegans, there’s a ton of people in that mix that live off McDonald’s. You don’t need a clinical study to prove that someone who watches everything they eat will live longer than the average slob.

true story. and that’s a problem with statistics, I agree. But considering there is a limited variety of things Vegetarians can eat, and assuming that one doesnt just eat sweets, don’t you think one would be “watching what they eat” if they were vegetarian?

it’s true what you say about chickens, cows, pigs etc. but dogs as well as other animals are considered pets. pets have a very special place in peoples lives. they are like members of your family and to think that someone could be so cruel as to torture and kill them for sport and money is the true test of their evil nature. michael vic is a dangerous person because he has no empathy for other living things. this team has just awarded him for his behavior. i really don’t know what else to say. i’m totally depressed.

Just because hes VERY athletic, doesnt mean hes going to be a good RB or WR (ie FredEx). I highly doubt hes going to be able to run up the middle or block, so hes useless to us as a RB because it will be obvious to other teams what our play is.

That leaves WR. IMO, the only other guy you can compare him to is Hester, and Hester wasnt so good last year, so I dont think hes going to help us that much.

Football players as role models.

What kind of role models is the NFL portaying by doing this and some of the other criminals that are allowed to play. What a crock of S#@$.

by Emmy on Aug 13, 2009 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

Hey you know the cool thing about role models is they don’t get to choose the people that look up to them. So if you raise a kid who looks up to a murderer or a wife beater or an animal abuser and they don’t know that those things are bad, he’s a fucking idiot and it’s not Mike Vick’s fault if someone thinks it’s ok to do.

It’s all about personal accountability. You’re saying the man shouldn’t be allowed to do what 1) He wants to do and 2) what someone wants to pay him millions of dollars to do. Where do you come into this? I don’t see you in the equation at all.

If you have a serious problem with this, notify the Eagles. Then stop watching them. Otherwise you’re bitching about something you’re not willing to do anything about and that makes you rather sad.

I am one, and for those who use the argument that it’s for food and everything, you still don’t realize that even those that are used for food (eggs, milk, etc) are tortured. I had a guest lecturer at my college that went into everything about it. I honestly don’t care what others eat, etc. I have my own beliefs and respect everyone elses but don’t disregard the truths/facts.

Vick? I don’t care. Honestly, there are worse people out there. Be the bigger person and just forgive and forget. It’s about the now and future. Condemning someone of a 2nd chance justs makes people look bad.

They aren’t tortured, they’re bred and killed for the purpose of eating. What’s the difference between how animals are mass produced and slaughtered and harvesting agriculture? Is it that the animals move? That’s silly.

Nah bro. Don’t get me wrong. I honestly have no issue with the mass production. And agriculture is different. Depending on how plants are bred and such, they aren’t killed. (not a fan of chemicals and all, bad for health as well, nah mean?)

My issue is with the ones that give milk and eggs and stuff. I’ve been to a farm and the condition they are kept in, is terrible.

This line of argument is absolutely foolish and I hold no stock in it, but factory farms ARE torture. Small family farms probably aren’t, but the conditions factory farm animals are kept in, yes, that too counts as torture.

Millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees. Two words: Michael Irvin.

by UnclaimedFright on Aug 14, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t like the move. I don’t think Vick, after a 2-year layoff and possible suspension, is going to be worth whatever he adds on teh field to justify the amount of controversy and distraction this brings.

I can understand the “he’s done his time/deserves a 2nd chance argument”, I just wish it were elsewhere because I don’t look forward to having to root for him.

But, there are a fair amount of Eagles fans who for whatever reason are saying “I can’t root for them after this”, including CavortingEagle, who’s one of the best posters on this board.

I hope that after the shock of this wears off, people will remember that Vick is just one of 53 guys on this team. That doesn’t mean that this isn’t a big deal or what he did wasn’t horrible or that everybody has to agree on this.

But the Eagles are bigger than Michael Vick. You’ve rooted for them for a long time. Brian Westbrook, Donovan McNabb, Desean Jackson, Sheldon Brown, David Akers, Trent Cole, Kevin Curtis, and the vast majority of the dudes on this team are still good people who are very much worth rooting for.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

by BrianS on Aug 14, 2009 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

I definitely back that

you can’t disown years of Eagles rooting over one move that may or may not turn out to be ill-advised.

i watched the news conference today with reid, vick and dungy. of course reid can see that vick should be given a second chance. both his kids are going to need second chances after they screwed up their lives with drugs and firearms convictions. i really don’t think reid is the one to help vick straighten out .he didn’t do such a good job of guiding his own sons. and dungy is taking the attitude that he should be forgiven. and he might be right about that. however, don’t just try to brush off the fact that vick is a vicious killer and did this not once or twice but for YEARS. he never showed any remorse until he was caught! that should tell you how much he regrets what he did. the only regret that he has is that he got caught. period. it’s a disgrace that philadelphia gave him a place on the team and it’s an insult to the rest of the team that they have to face all the grief that will come their way because of vick.
