I come bearing an Olive Branch.. Re: Westbrook
Hello Eagles Fans. I'm coming to your fine blog not to talk trash but to get Eagle fans opinions on Brian Westbrook for a piece i'm doing on my blog about Villanovans in the pros. It's very hard for me to balance my love for Westbrook for my hatred of the Eagles but I'm able to find it.. So anyways I have a few questions for you, I know most of the answers but i just need to hear it from you.
- What is your most profound Brian Westbrook memory in an Eagles Uniform?
- How does Westbrook embody the spirit of the city of Philadelphia?
- What is Westbrook's importance to the success of the birds?
- Where would you rank him in the terms of great Eagles in history (recent or otherwise)?
- Do you think he's been underutilized by a coach who's obsessed with throwing the ball?
Thanks for any input you guys have.. I appreciate it. I hope your team can stop catching all these bum breaks they have recently. When the Giants play the Eagles, i want it to be the competitive type of game that has made this the best rivalry in sports during recent years.

Are there even any other “Villanovans” in the NFL?

There's a guy you might see on TV every once in a while
I believe his name is Howie Long.. I believe he’s in possession of some sort of Yellow Jacket. But seriously.. the list is fairly long and not too distinguished, but it is impressive when you consider the size of the school.

“In” was the operative word there.
I know Howie Long is a Villanova guy, but he’s been out for a long time obviously.

Oh yea
1. Its definitely the punt return but i remember this one play vs the dolphins and we were at about the 20 yd line and they handed it to Westbrook and he juked a few guys and broke a couple arm tackles for six.
2. No matter what he wants to be on the field and will play if the trainer gives him the okay. He is also a hard worker and a team leader. A classy guy that also gives back and is a team player
3. He is very important, we struggle sometimes without him because opposing defenses will make gameplans around this guy. Wheither he is in the backfield or in the slot or out wide they absolutely have to adequately account for him. He also plays as decoy by drawing coverage autibles when he is motioned out of the backfield and helping other guys get open.
4. Gotta go with everyone else….number 2 RB.
5. No, I actually feel we’re using him to his full potiential. He is a multi-purpose threat and we will get the ball in his hands one way or another. I will admit it wouldnt hurt to run a lil more but he will still make plays as long as he is healthy.

and he’s primed to get a lot of action this season with the injuries they’ve sustained at Wide Receiver. There’s also Ventrone who’s a special teams ace for The Pats who happens to be one of Belicheat’s favorite players.

What is your most profound Brian Westbrook memory in an Eagles Uniform?
Either Westbrook’s punt return for a touchdown to be the Giants in 2003 or Westbrook’s knee down at the one to save a win against the Cowboys in 2007.
How does Westbrook embody the spirit of the city of Philadelphia?
He’s a hard working guy who gives it 100% everytime. That’s Philadelphia.
What is Westbrook’s importance to the success of the birds?
No disrespect to McNabb, but Westbrook is probably our most important offensive weapon. Heathy or not, defensive coordinators always keep two guys on Westbrook, drawing away coverage from someone else. He’s also gives us our running game, so defenses can’t just play pass all game long.
An example of what Westbrook can do for our offense and what happen when he’s out of the game comes from first Redskins game from last season. In the first quarter, Westbrook was 100% for the start of the game. Our offensive was explosive; was rushing well so we had balance in the offense. We score a touchdown on the opening drive, but Westbrook got injured while scoring the touchdown. After that, Westbrook wasn’t the same. Couldn’t run well so defense played off the pass and offense didn’t score anymore points. And we lost to the Redskins 23-17 (where 10 points came from special teams).
Where would you rank him in the terms of great Eagles in history (recent or otherwise)?
Second best running back in history behind Steve Van Buren; fifth best player overall behind Buren, Harold Carmichael, Brian Dawkins, and Reggie White.
Do you think he’s been underutilized by a coach who’s obsessed with throwing the ball?
2008: 287 touches (14 games)
2007: 368 touches (15 games)
2006: 317 touches (14 1/2 games)
I think that’s good enough.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

the knee killed me
i lost my fantasy championship by five points.. i was one touchdown away from winning 450 bucks and i had to walk away with only 50.. So i got my buy in back, but needless to say I wanted to blow my brains out. The PR TD against the Giants was ridiculous. First off, I didn’t understand why they punted to him and second the return itself was incredible. These days people tend to forget how dangerous he was in that role. Back then I didn’t understand why Andy Reid had the nerve to have Duce Staley starting while they had the most dynamic open field running back in the league who wasn’t named Ladainian Tomlinson. It’s good that he finally got the clue.

I agree
with the knee at Cowboys 1 yard line. It was absolutely him in a nutshell. A great player willing to sacrifice stats for the greater good.
But I disagree that hes in front of McNabb on the list of great Eagles, and one could make a case for Jaws.

Heres my answers
1. Best Memory- 2007 Westbrook broke a 24 yard run with the clock running down and took a knee at the 1 to seal a 10-6 win over Dallas- John Ruyan told him to (classy)
or the 84 yrd return to beat the Giants in a comeback 14-10 in 2003
2. How does embody the spirit of the city of Philadelphia?- no drama all buisness Blue color workhorse, and he went to Nova
3.What is Westbrook’s importance? 1/3 of our O, nuff said
4.Where would you rank him- top 3 in RB’s with Van Burran as #1, Westy as #2, and Waters as #3. but toe to toe now-a-day Westy would take SVB
5.Do you think he’s been underutilized?- nO, He shines in a West Cost offense, we didnt have the support to run him in the last few years anyhow. now that we have younger more agile linemen and a great FB he will run alot more
Brian Westbrook is my favorite Offensive Skill guy of all time… coming from a 25 yr old
RIP JJ

i would hav 2 say my most memorable WESTBROOK moment is definetely the game winning punt return in a game in which we could not muster any O watsoever.
Now my friend i have a ?? for you………wat will the Gints do when we stack the box and shut down Jacobs and Eli is running 4 his life because he has pedestrian receivers???
hope ur defense can set your O up with short fields off takeaways otherwise i think u guys may be one of the biggest disappointments in the league this year.

well except that if you watch the video
every lineman is motioning for him to get down… it was clearly talked about in the huddle. Runyan even said so… but still to do that is different than just knowing you should.
And there was no better way to stick it to dallas than to do that in their building

when he did that he showed a selfless love for his team and not just wanting to run up his own stats. Class pure and simple.

1.What is your most profound Brian Westbrook memory in an Eagles Uniform?
Hands down the winner is the kneel down. I thought kneel down before even reading any posts, as I can tell many others did. The reason why is obvious, shows sacrifice for the team, and it was just clever overall, even if it was Runyan’s idea. Another more recent memory is of Westbrook exposing Antonio Pierce for the TD run this past season after a long grind of a game.
2.How does Westbrook embody the spirit of the city of Philadelphia?
Philaldephia clearly favors the “quiet grinder” persona, while being more harsh on the naturally talented. Luckily, Westbrook has both, which is why he’s so loved in this city. Basically, we love Westbrook for the same reason we loved Jim Johnson, they both let their actions do the talking.
3.What is Westbrook’s importance to the success of the birds?
He has given our offense a unique identity that few NFL teams can match. He may be a small guy, but he is a terror no matter where he is lined up, which poses such a difficult challenge for opposing defensive coordinators. Westbrook has been just a huge part of our offense.
4.Where would you rank him in the terms of great Eagles in history (recent or otherwise)?
Top 3 all time, numero uno for the last decade at least.
Do you think he’s been underutilized by a coach who’s obsessed with throwing the ball?
I think he has been used just the right amount over the years. Westbrook is not a pound the ball every down back, so he probably becomes less effective the more you use him. Using him slightly less than most running backs makes our offense less predictable and more potent.

Yes, it was a 62 yard field goal by Matt Bryant. I was at the game and it was exciting after he made the play and bascially the whole top section of the stadium was Eagles fans and we were all going crazy. Then, the kick came and, I would say, was one of the best kicks i have seen. That game hurt bad. Walking out of that stadium was a piece of crap. Damn Bucs fans, all they are a front runners and half of the stadium left after Westy scored on that play. What a play by Westy, but that was a painful loss.
by phillyphan9208 on Aug 11, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hated to take the loss
but that was the week Bryants son or daughter passed away (like a day or two before the game) so I really felt for the guy. I think that the Bucc’s weren’t even sure if he would be willing to play, and then he comes out there and puts a steak in our freaking hearts. Painful as an Eagles fan, but you had to give it up to Bryant for even being in the game.

I think you have your years mixed up a little bit man.
Matt Bryant served us that bitter loss in 2006 on our way to the playoffs where we lost to New Orleans (another field goal loss i think). However, he tragically lost his son this past season, in 2008.

Off top, mine were the Giants punt return
and the Tampa Bay play. For a second there, I thought that one was gonna get no love.
He did the same thing on a come-from-behind win against the Redskins in ’07 I think. The 33-25 game. And on the 70-yard screen against Minnesota in the playoffs this year.

One fhe Eagles Best.......
Is everyone here that young that they don’t know about Wilbert Montgomery. He was probably the Eagles 2nd or third best running back ever. What’s wrong with you guys. Wilbert Montgomery was one of the hardest running backs in the league at that time. He ran the ball 20-30 times per game. In my opinion he was far better than Ricky Waters. In the top 3 with Westbrook and Van Buren. Wilbert Montgomery gave his all every time he touched the ball. He could run over you, run through you or run around you. How he could be overlooked is totally unacceptable.
by Virgoman3 on Aug 10, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
1. My most profound memory of Brian was the Tampa game in Tampa when he broke that 52 yard touchdown with about 30 seconds left. I was there and it was the best play I have ever seen him make.
2. He is everything like Philly. Hard Worker. Keeps his mouth shut. Shows what he has on the field, not off of it. He embodies the city of Philadelphia.
3. Westbrook is one of the 2 most important players on this team along with McNabb. Though I put him just ahead because of what he brings to the offense. He brings his running ability, his patience, pass catching and his blocking. Also, he draws double teams all of the time, which in turn helps our offense out tremendously.
4. I would say 5 on my list. It would be for me, Bednarik, Van Buren, White, McNabb, and then Westbrook.
5. Andy Reid does not underutilize Brian Westbrook. Westbrook is one of our top pass catchers and can run the ball the way Andy wants to run the ball. Never in 100 years would Westbrook be underutilized in this offense.
