Vernon Davis would be awesome but how about this underrated Tight End?
After the heartbreaking injury to C.I, I've been thinking about what the Eagles can do to replace him. Tearing your ACL in the same knee twice can't be good. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended his NFL career although of course i hope it doesn't. dday's earlier post about Vernon Davis reminded me that there was a tight end that was on the trading block in April. That tight end is the highly underrated Tony Sheffler of the Broncos.
This is the trading block report from ESPN in April.
Tony Scheffler, tight end, Denver: Scheffler has reportedly been on the trading block because new Denver coach Josh McDaniels uses a system in which only one tight end is used. The Broncos starter is Daniel Graham. Scheffler, meanwhile, is close friends with Cutler. The former training camp roommates could both be former Broncos if the price is right. Scheffler is a solid field stretcher who could attract interest around the league.
In the 2009 draft, the Broncos surprisingly draft another tight end Richard Quinn in the 2nd round, 64th overall. This is the story from Pro Football Talk.
The Broncos reached a contract agreement with second round selection Richard Quinn, one of the new regime's most surprising draft picks.
Quinn was taken 64th overall, the last pick of the second round. Denver traded two third-round picks (79 and 84) to move up for Quinn, a player that was not expected to be drafted particularly early. They also received the No. 132 pick back in the deal.
Quinn had only 12 catches at North Carolina, but is known as a punishing blocker. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels likes to use two tight end sets and Quinn should help in the running game eventually.
Quinn will learn from Daniel Graham, one of the best blocking tight ends in football.
So apparently Mr.McDaniels has the hots for blocking tight ends and not so much for incredibly athletic pass catching tight ends. Tony Sheffler is now definitely expendable for the Broncos. Reports were saying earlier that a 4th rounder maybe 5th could net Sheffler but i would give as high as a 3rd rounder for the 26 year old. Let's take a look at some stats.
2007(2nd year) 16 games 7 starts 49 catches 549 yards 11.2 avg 5 tds
2008(3rd year) 13 games 7 starts 40 catches 645 yards 16.1 avg(wow) 3 tds
If the stats are not enough for you watch this video.
Tony Scheffler Highlight (via schacher10)
That catch at 1:15 is one of the best you will ever see.
This is a report from rotoworld.com from April 27th.
The Eagles could reportedly still make a move for Tony Scheffler involving a 2010 draft pick. Philadelphia drafted a similar vertical tight end in Cornelius Ingram on day two, but he may sit out the season if he needs more ACL surgery. The Eagles are reportedly willing to pay a 2010 third-rounder for Scheffler. They'll likely see how Ingram's knee holds up in minicamps before making a move.
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
According to that report, the Eagles were interested in Sheffler. Ironically, Ingram is sitting out the season for an ACL tear, his second in the same knee. Does that mean the Eagles will try for Sheffler again? I sure freakin' hope so. Sheffler would easily get the starting job over Celek. Celek is good but Sheffler is a "stud". lol. thats from my JIBTA vocabulary. Who needs a blocking tight end anyway when we got the Weave!?
via s.wsj.net
Vernon Davis would be awesome to have. Truly athletically gifted. 6'3 250lbs solid muscle. 4.38 40 yard dash with a 42 inch vertical. Great blocker and pass catcher. He is seriously one of the best all around tight ends in the league. Singletary just doesn't know how to use tight ends, that's why his numbers dropped so much last year. Plus we all know how Singletary humiliated him in front of tens and thousands. If San Francisco would like to trade Davis i would trade next year's 1st rounder in a heartbeat. A 2nd rounder and Reggie Brown would be a good offer too since Crabtree is a no-show and Brandon Jones is out for 2 months. If not i will gladly take Sheffler for a 3rd.

I agree with getting him but...
no way he starts over my boy Brent Celek, Celek has bled and cried for the Eagles and has worked his ass off, plus now he can block and Schfeter doesn’t.
we haven't seen Celek block in a real game yet...
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
Celek is no better at blocking than Sheffler is.
“Tony’s a very, very highly skilled player,” McDaniels said. “He can do a lot of things. He can run, he can catch, he can block. We’re going to take advantage of every skill that he has. He’s made a good impression on our team here.”
How would he take advantage of his skill if he is playing behind a blocking tight end like Daniel Graham and he just drafted another blocking tight end Richard Quinn in the 2nd round.
Trade him to us.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
By drafting Ingram ...
… we saw where “blocking” ranks on the list of things the Eagles look for in a TE.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
If San Francisco would like to trade Davis i would trade next year’s 1st rounder in a heartbeat.
you honestly must be on crack

Davis's 2nd season...
14 gms 52 catches 509 yards 4 tds. Plus we already know he is a dominant blocker. His numbers only dropped because of Singletary who runs a run first offense and does not use tight ends for receiving. Think about it. If in only his 2nd season he got 52 catches with the measly 49’ers, don’t you think he would be much better with Mcnabb and the Eagles? I would easily give a 1st rounder for a 25 yr old stud tight end that will give me 60-70 catches 5-10 tds and is a dominant blocker.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
If he had a good qb and a system like ours you wouldn't be saying that.
I also did say…
A 2nd rounder and Reggie Brown would be a good offer too since Crabtree is a no-show and Brandon Jones is out for 2 months
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
we wouldnt even trade a second for tony gonzalez when he was available.gonz is the best tight end in nfl history, who just put up one of his best seasons in the nfl. what makes you think we would trade a 1st for a te who is nowhere nearly as proven as tony.
"I Think I'm Pretty Nasty" - Jason Peters
why would we pay a first
for a te whos current coach thinks that he cant “play with him”,“cannot win with him”, and “cannot coach with him”.
singltary’s feelings toward davis

Singletary over reacted.
No coach should ever embarrass his player in front of tens of thousands of people. That was just plain wrong. On the news the next day, nobody agreed with Singletary’s actions and thought what he did was wrong.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
it doesnt matter that he over reacted. that is how he feels about vernon and means that he would obviosly trade him for less than a first. so why should we overpay?
"I Think I'm Pretty Nasty" - Jason Peters
So if Singletary would only trade him for a 1st
would you do it?
Why would i want to give a 1st if they would accept a 2nd or less? My point is to say i would give a 1st for him,not give him a first even if a 2nd rounder would do the job. That’s just stupid.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
no i wouldnt do it when you could possibly get scheffler for a 3rd or 4th.
"I Think I'm Pretty Nasty" - Jason Peters
Alrighty then.
Bringing up Singletary’s comments was unnecessary. I would be happy either way. Sheffler for 3rd/4th or Davis for 1st/2nd.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
i just brought up his comments to show that he would probobly trade him for less than a 1st

davis value
is not worth a first rounder anymore its more like a low 2nd or high 3rd with a 4th or a fifth as a complement
Look at it this way...
The Eagles trade their first-round pick in the 2010 draft for the full-package tight end, it’s a late pick… maybe 32nd.
Or… they can hold onto that pick and maybe it’ll be an early 1st round pick.
Oblique question:
As a way of dancing around the injury issue, I’m wondering can anyone remind me who was the tight end on the Giants’ team that won a Super Bowl with Jeff Hostetler at the helm?
Look at the history of Super Bowl winning teams. I argue tight ends are crucial. Of course, my thinking on this means Earl Morrell should have been able to beat Joe Namath.
On a side note- whereinthehellis Hollsopple, PA?
Typo...
That’s Earl Morrall, sorry.
As to Hollsopple, it turns out it’s between Pittsburgh and Altoona, right there in the region that gave us Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Len Dawson, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Joe Montana, Randall Cunningham (oops! Sorry, California boy, my bad)… so Hostetler is one of those (that’s his hometown)?
there is NO way
that we don’t sign another TE I dont know whats going to happen but there is no way
Let's get it.

Tony Scheffler would be a great addition.
I wouldnt pay anything above a third rounder for Davis. I just dont think hes worth it. But his play could be a negative consequence of the horrible QB play in San Francisco.
RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.
Davis doesn’t perform consistently and he’s got an attitude problem. I would much rather have Tony Scheffler. Another guy that I feel is underrated by the league, but whose value is well known by his own team is Owen Daniels.
There’s no way we need to go for a guy like Vernon Davis when we can just as easily go out and get a TE who is lower profile, costs less, and demands less in trade value.

I dunno'...
Caught this interesting little blurb on Wikipedia, regarding his college career:
In 2003, Davis saw the most consistent action of any true freshman, playing in all thirteen contests. He had five receptions for 87 yards (11.8 avg) and led the kickoff coverage unit with eight solo tackles. (emphasis added)
I’d say, “hey big guy, you wanna’ earn the big bucks” because that skill wouldn’t hurt us at all.
As much as I would LOVE to get Scheffler for a 3rd rounder, I don’t think it’s going to happen. There’s a chance, but I doubt it. As for Davis… not a chance… especially not for anything higher than a 3rd rounder.
My feeling is we will wait for a decent TE to get cut that can come in and compete for the backup job. Andy & co. love Celek as the starter and I don’t think they’ll bring in a player of Scheffler’s caliber which would almost be guaranteed to push Celek to #2. I’d love to see it, don’t get me wrong. Having two TE’s at that skill level would be amazing, but I don’t see it happening.
So, what do you think? Are you okay with turning another team’s trash into our treasure or do you think we NEED to trade for a starting-caliber TE?
I think a safe assumption would be that Andy will not go into the season with our TE corps being Celek, Schobel, Bright or Myers. They will add somebody. Who it is? Who knows…
The Eagles have a history of starting a season without a capable player at certain positions (KR/PR in 2007, FB in 2008) but they can’t go into this season with that TE corps… can they????
I think you answered your own question

I’m sorry to break this to you guys but there is NO way we get Davis…
first I dont think we are even considering him and second why the HELL would SF want to move him??? Just because our backup TE went down doesn’t make every good TE that we want available this isn’t Madden.
We are in a tough position we are trying to find a BACK up TE so do you really want to give up draft picks for a back up TE?… I give an outside shot of trading for Sheffter even tho at this point broconos might not want to deal.

Besides J Peters, Sammuals and when we went after TO we dont usually go after others goods
RIP JJ
Best. Blocker. Ever.
John Crumpacker, San Fran Chronicle Staff Writer:
In a remarkable bit of unsolicited praise, coach Mike Singletary said the blocking that Vernon Davis did Sunday against the Jets was the finest he’d ever seen by a tight end.
“I don’t know if there’s ever been a tight end that can block better than Vernon Davis,” Singletary said in his Monday (12.08.08) news conference, a day after the 49ers defeated the Jets 24-14. “It’s the best I’ve ever seen, period. For him to be on a defensive end, linebacker, he was on him, driving him, moving him. He did an exceptional job.”

Remember the Cliff Lee trade!
Told of his head coach’s comments, Davis said, “I accept that. I agree. It doesn’t surprise me at all. It is essential to the game. I can catch the ball. I can run the routes. I can run by anybody who’s on me. To be able to block, that sounds like a complete tight end to me.”
Such a head case, we could do with.

I love Davis
But its not gonna happen unless they want like a 4th or 5th for him but I think we could pull off the tony trade. I wouldve liked to have Winslow if it wasnt for his injury issues.

davis
is extremely talented but i think he would be to pricy. i would NOT give up a 1st for him. I think we could probably steal Scheffler and he would be very productive for us.
Good thing I'm not the General Manager...
I’d give up the 1st plus the 2nd plus Reggie Brown plus Hank Baskett… and my favorite, Jason Avant if that would get it done. I guess you could say I place great value on tight ends; especially one about which Mike Singletary said “I don’t know if there’s ever been a tight end that can block better”…
if you put stock in singletary’s words you probably shouldnt want davis at all haha

I think we have to make a move soon, I’m pretty sure that the FO is calling people and trying to work something out. I’d take Scheffler for a next years 3.
Astra Inclinant, Non Necessitant
I backed this move
on Day 2 of the draft, and I still do now.
Even if Ingram were healthy, it would have made sense if the price is right.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
More speculation on something that will never happen...
Fitzgerald, Boldin, Gonzales and now Scheffler and Davis. The Eagles FO NEVER does what the fans want/expect…I wouldnt get your hopes up. They have made some very good moves overall…but signing a TE hasnt been one of them. They took a chance on Ingram(a 5th rounder)…didnt work out. Theres a reason a guy that explosive fell to the 5th round…
They never make the obvious move ...
… but they usually fill needs with young, affordable players.
Sheffler would fit that description.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Unlike Fitz, (I assume) Boldin, and probably Davis, I think Scheffler is also actually available.
They were interested in Tony G for the right price. He’s bound to seriously decline soon, and drafting a younger TE matches the Eagles style of helping the team win now, while still worrying about later.
As for the all caps never: I’m sure the front office made lots of fans happy with several moves over the years. Just because they didn’t make a big trade to settle the ‘true number 1 WR saga’ doesn’t mean they won’t entertain trading for a TE.
I agree with the last graf
Also, FredEx, did I just see your comment on Vick on PFT?
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
The fans wanted...
Jason Peters, Leonard Weaver, and a number 1 wideout this year. They got Peters, Weaver, and Maclin in the draft who might be our number 1 in a couple years. Desean is our #1 this year without a doubt. The Eagles was going to draft Knowshon if Denver didnt rob him from us. BGN was crazy for Knowshon before the draft.
The Eagles sometimes do want the fans want/expect, just not that often.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.

Did you hear Andy Reid when they asked him about Knowshon?
His words and face said it all. He would’ve drafted Knowshon without a doubt.
Felix is better than Brian. You can call me FIBTB.
The fans will never seemed satisfied because 1.) they will always want more 2.) fans wants will never be universal.
For example last draft, you have people wanted to use the 1st pick on RB, TE, or to trade for a WR.
And sometimes the most vocal fans know the least.

So your the only person on the planet who wants the eagles to do something and then they magically go out and do it ! OK so being the eagles always do what YOU want…what do YOU want the Eagles to do with their tight end situation ?
wrong question to ask me I happen to be the biggest Brent Celek fan in the history of fandom.
