Answer to: 2010 NFL Draft--Part 1: Team Needs

This fanpost got me thinking about our linebackers. Were solid at MLB, but inconsistent at OLB. We could fix the situation with talent on our roster. We could convert one of our DE's like Victor Ambimiri (do not like spelling that), Chris Clemons, or Darren Howard. Of course they will need time to transition. But if we put an athletic DE at OLB it could work. Just like Kapaman in the Green Bay's new 3-4.

Thoughts?

The 2010 post got him thinking about it, but I think he’s referring to this coming season

i couldn’t tell. my bad.

hm..

Chris Clemons would be better suited to play OLB than either of Howard or Abiamiri, who are larger guys who come in and rush the QB from the DT position on 3rd down. Clemons and Bryan Smith would be the best guys to try a little OLB

Obviously for one, it would depend on the talent/skill set of the individual. You need to be able to turn your hips and cover guys. Gocong was a converted a pass rushing DE, and that didn’t (to date) yield anything more than a solid OLB.

I don’t think OLB is a problem, although it’s our weakest spot and we could stand to improve the position. I personally wouldn’t want to sacrifice our depth at line. Unless they were sure Abiamiri, or whomever, would be an upgrade. And I want Abiamiri to stay on the line, as he actually posses good size for the DE position.

If they were to, I think Bryan Smith would be the most likely candidate. He was undersized (weight/bulk) coming out of college and was commonly projected as OLB at the next level. He has since been bulking up, but if this were to happen, I’d think he’d be the guy.

agreed

Gocong has been OK, but nothing spectacular. And if they were to sacrifice any of the DE corps, it would be Smith, who coincidentally is a 3rd round speed rusher from a smaller school (McNeese State) who was commonly projected as a 3-4 rush LB. Wait, doesn’t that sound familiar?

We already established that Klecko is moving to punter.

Side note – Anyone remember the old, old, old basketball video games, where you could make Michael Jordan the center, and the opposing center was like 3 times slower, and had absolutely no shot of covering him, plus none of the other defenders would help out, and you could basically put up 150 with relative ease?

King Dunlap to TE

Picture it… its beautiful. 9’11" 860 lb of the King making dazzling grabs on fade routes in the endzone using his superior athleticism and startling good looks to catch defenders off guard

In response to this post, we already moved a DE to OLB. Its feasible to think we might try it again.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Sort of. We moved a college DE to OLB, not an NFL DE to OLB.

Besides, this is probably Darren Howard’s last year here, and even if it was, it’s really that simple to just move a guy around. It’s a commitment that takes a couple years, not just one preseason. They aren’t moving anybody.

“was” should be “isn’t.” Oops.

I think JIBTA, Calibroncoboy, and KingMcNabb may be eligible for that 2015 draft.

Howard at Middle Linebacker. Who could throw over him?

In all seriousness...

If teams weren’t limited to a 53-man roster, you can be sure as hell guys like Manute Bol would be on NFL rosters just to try to block field goals. Frankly, I’m surprised college coaches don’t recruit abnormally tall guys throughout the world just for that purpose.

by JimmyK on Jul 7, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Yao is actually a pretty good center, he jus plays soft and guys that tall usually have nothing to go along with their height. They’re either really slow or don’t have enough coordination to play at such a high level. Also their body is their usual downfall bc they end up with knee problems and leg injuries bc of their unusual stucture.

by birdsflyinhigh2590 on Jul 9, 2009 4:18 AM EDT up reply actions

thats what I meant in retrospect..

I respect yao as a player, although he really didnt develop into the all star caliber player he is known for recently late into his nba career (aka ~2 years ago), however, his injuries (foot) seem to have ended his career right as he was hitting or about to hit his peak, which is unfortunate to say the least
