Heyward-Bey signed by Oakland
Espn is reporting the signing of Oakland's 1st rounder, Darrius Heyward-Bey. Although the terms were not released, his deal is said to be garanteed to be worth at least 23.5 million. Since he was picked 7th and Maclin was picked 19, Maclin has to be expecting to get less money.
Wasn't Maclin the 3rd WR taken? So, he should now have a contract to go off of. Does this mean that we are one step closer to having our much coveted WR in camp?
I really hope so.

It's crazy
It’s almost a curse to have a top 10, maybe top 15 soon, draft pick. If you end up busting, you end up paying a dud a lot of money.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

i’m all about a rookie cap. it’s insane that a top 10 pick can make more than a five-time pro-bowler. rediculous.

nothing wrong with it
it may be his only big pay day .. and he earned it by becoming a top 10 choice .. if those other players arnt selected in the first round than its thier fault they didnt get the big pay day .. its fine the way it is .. and btw if im maclins agent i want the same deal heyward bey got .. because maclin should of went 7 .. and the eagles said he was top 10 talent

If your Eagles you want to pay him as close to pick 19 as possible, so every rookie doesn’t claim they should have been taken higher.
It would be interesting if we overpaid (we’re in a great situation to do so) to see if there would be a ripple effect with the other rookies.
However I’m not for that, since it might cause its own negative effect within the team, with more guys wanting more money.
Also, Maclin going 7 is based on Al Davis being ridiculous. Maclin was suppose to be the 2nd WR off the board, which puts him at 10 at best. But like I said Eagles are probably trying to pay for what he was, the 19th pick.
by FredEx on Jul 31, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Either way he was the
19th pick… he should be payed like it.
Its not our fault he slipped, its how the draft fell into place.
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right
but unfortunately that’s probably not how Maclin and his agent see it. They see it as Maclin being a top 10 pick and they want to be compensated as close to that as possible.
Just like Crabtree wanting Top 3 money when he was picked at 10.
Bottom line is that something needs to change.

yea
well he wont sign till crabtree does. . and i think crabtree gets a lil more than heyward bey .. and since heyward bey and maclin haave the same agent .. hes gonna want close to what heyward bey wants since he was a projected top 10 pick .. prob holding out for atleast another week if not more
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
eventually andy will
get into it and just say “look you went 19 like it or not you need to be payed like you were taken 19th”…. maclin wont like it but hey it’ll give him a chip on his shoulder and maybe he will understand.
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
bs
if you told me that shit i would just hold out .. he will get somewhere around heyward beys money .. esp since i think crabtree gets more than him

I wouldnt mind giving maclin
a contract that you would give a #11-15 pick or Freemans contract.
He has great talent and is smart, he also SHOULD have gone in the top 10 but didnt… the Eagles obviously have the money to give him a contract from that range but we dont want to…
bottom line is at some point we just need to meet them about half way, give them the garenteed money were looking at, then put a shit load of incentives and stuff so it looks like its more than it really is… you know what im saying?
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The problem is that Crabtree wants more money than he should be getting as the #10 (i think) pick because he was projected to go much higher. Of course, what he gets influences what maclin’s contract should look like. The 49ers camp doesn’t start till saturday so Crabtree isn’t holding out yet but its screwing up over since the eagles camp already started so Maclin is missing practice. Hopefully Heyward Bey signing speeds this along so we can move along.
by whiskeybill on Jul 30, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This whole thing is a mess. Crabtree wants top 3-5 money supposedly.
Maclin and Bey’s agents are from the same firm. I can see Maclin trying to get something close to Bey’s deal and missing a good chunk of camp.
As soon as Maclin signs his big deal – how long do we have before DJax starts griping? A season? Two?
by andyreidswaistline on Jul 30, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think if Desean
does well this year the eagles wont have any problem extending his deal and giving him more money. Djax doesnt seem like the “i want the money right now or im not playing” type. After this year I wouldnt be suprised to see him sign and extension, if not the following year definantly.
Maclin should just man up, sign a good 4 year deal(I think the eagles normally pay fairly) then get into camp play well(if he see’s the field) then next year play very well then ask the eagles for a new contract/extension if they say no he’s still making alot of money then once the 3rd year is over if he has done pretty well he will get an extension and alot more money..
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
fuck that
man up? this is millions of dollars .. if im maclin im not going to camp untill i get what heyward bey got .. well around there
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
eh, well thats the difference
I wouldnt expect someone in the NFL to pay me a shit ton of money when I havent even stepped onto the field for them…
he was taken 19th, he needs to be payed like it, then when he out does his contract we give him a new one.
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
nope
thats a stupid perspective .. you get paid what you deserve .. and when people fall they generally get a little more money .. so i can see him getthing close to beys money or holding out
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My perspective
may look stupid to you, but yours looks stupid to me, there is no need to be like that, everyone is entitled to there opinion, someone is going to be wrong, “close to beys money” could be 1/2 of his garenteed up to 1mill short…
for you it could be different. I think he deserves to get payed like the 3rd reciever taken

i love the wild_eagle vs. jibta rivalry that's brewing...
it’s like punch out!! little mac (wild_eagle – 17-year-old, never backs down from a fight) vs. don flamenco (jibta – 23-year-old, completely in love with himself).
by awd777 on Jul 31, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
dude
no way .. if im maclin why the hell would i take less money when crabtree the second reciever taken is going to get more than heyward bey>?
by jack is better than asante on Aug 1, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have to half agree with what JIBTA said. Maclin needs to play his cards like it could be the last contract he ever signs.
The reality is that Heyward Bey got his coin. Crabtree is putting up a stink and it’s likely he’s going to get top 6-8 money. Once that shoe falls, Maclin has an argument. And they’re both CAA clients.
by andyreidswaistline on Jul 31, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I forgot about Crabtree going at #10
I don’t know but I don’t think that this is going to end up good for us. If he was a RB this would be different.
Well all know that this system isn’t simple, and players need a lot of reps to understand it.
Let’s hope that all of Maclins confidence isn’t some front. Let’s hope that everyone saying that he is really smart isn’t some bullshit either.

Something needs to change
You’d think that DHB’s signing would help the Maclin talks move along, but the fact that his contract is about a 20% increase over last year’s #7 draft pick actually might hurt the Eagles I think.
The typical difference between one draft pick and the same pick from the year before is usually about 10%. This HUGE contract that the Raiders gave to DHB is only going to force agent’s of players before and after the #7 pick to ask for more money.
I am going to Training Camp tomorrow morning/afternoon hoping to see Maclin in his #18 jersey, but unfortunately I think I’m going to have to “settle” with seeing the rest of the team without 18 present.
Here’s to hoping I’m wrong. C’mon Maclin get there! We need you!
by Smitty2K3 on Jul 31, 2009 9:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
could the eagles use the argument that oakland is clueless, and probably didn’t need to pay that much for DHB?
by eagleyosh on Jul 31, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hahaha I wish.
They are absolutely clueless though. They start off by REACHING for DHB then they pay him better than some of the best WRs in the game before he has even played a down in the NFL.
… Ridiculous.
by Smitty2K3 on Jul 31, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hey hey hey
DHB as 4.3 speed, it doesnt matter if your retarded and never played football in your life, if Al davis hears you can run fast then its over.
also dont get pissed at al davis, without him we couldnt have gotten Maclin…
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
wonder how much he'd pay for usain
by RIP26_litodoin'work on Jul 31, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
are you kidding,
Al davis would would give him like 100mill garenteed just because hes fast. lol
by wild_eagle on Jul 31, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he’s also 6’5" 200 lb. So there’s your height/weight/speed
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.
by IronHank on Aug 1, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i could see him and vick
working out for davis within the next few weeks as soon as his QB and WR options pan out terribly over the preseason. Also, look for him to work out Phelpsie in the near future as well. His world records will just be too tempting for Davis to pass up and his transition from the water to the turf will be flawless….. guaranteed….
by RIP26_litodoin'work on Aug 3, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
heyward bey
hes going to be good .. he has a good chance he is going to be better than maclin .. al davis is an idiot i agree .. but not because he took him ..its where he took him .. he could of went down and got him from 12 to 19
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
now
mitchell in the second round .. im defending you on that al davis .. or the fact that you gave moss away .. went out and got hall and cut him after half a season .. or cut gibril wilson after a 130 tackle season .. and overpaid half your defensive line
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
heyward bey
hes going to be good
Is someone writing this stuff down? Bye Dawk?
And JIBTA (or JA is new one I guess) I’m not rooting against your prediction to spite you, but between the reach on draft day and the big contract, It would be very amusing if DHB turns out to be Troy Williamson-esque.
by FredEx on Jul 31, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea
everyone uses that comparison .. but heyward bey is also big .. not just fast .. i think hes going to be a very good wr .. but he took him a little too high .. if crabtree was gone and he took him it wouldnt of been that big a deal .. because i think maclin and heward bey are debatable .. i would prob go with heyward bey because of his size and speed .. but crabtreee was clearly the best wr in the draft .. and thats what was shocking .. and the fact that he could of got heyward bey at 10-19
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That comparison is used a lot because their size and speed are comprable. Troy Williamson wasn’t small. DHB is only a quarter of an inch taller than he is.
I agree that I don’t think people would have made a big deal if Crabtree was off the board. Not to the extent it happened anyway. Some people did have Maclin as top 10 talent wise, so the Raiders would have got some flack for passing on him, but nearly as much as passing on Crabtree.
by FredEx on Jul 31, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea
but heyward bey and maclin are close .. they both were arguably the second best wr in the draft .. everyone knows crabtrees gonna be a stud tho
by jack is better than asante on Jul 31, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
everyone knows crabtrees gonna be a stud
Much like everyone “knew” Ryan Leaf was going to be a stud.
Look, it’s the draft. Nobody is going to be automatically going to be a stud. Outside the fact that there’s always first round busts, nothing in the draft is guaranteed. Just saying.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

noo
calvin johnson was a guarantee .. so was larry fitz .. so is crabtree .. hes going to be great unless he gets hurt .. qbs are a lot differnt .. the bust factor is higher because a guy like leaf or carr .. could be good if they are in right situation .. if carr went to pats. . he could of easily been as good as brady .. but he went to a bad texans team and got sacked 100000 times
by jack is better than asante on Aug 1, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Charles Rogers, Reggie Williams, Mike Williams, and Troy Williamson were all supposed to be great wide receivers They were all busts.
http://profootball.scout.com/a.z?s=127&p=9&c=12&nid=83&lnid=124&rc=4&pid=16&yr=2003
All ranked highly there.
As for QBs…meh, I’ll give you Carr. But Some quarterback will be busts no matter what. Ryan Leaf and his attitude wouldn’t make him as good as Peyton Manning if Colts selected Leaf instead.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Indeed, busts happen.
And it’s not like Crabtree is a complete freak with no question marks.
Questionable speed, decent size, only 6’1 1/2 (just under actually), ran in a brilliant passer friendly system at T-Tech where anyone can go nuts.
