I've lost even more respect for ESPN today.

The NFL just lost one of it's greats and what dominates the headlines? BRETT FAVRE!!! The fact that ESPN was composed of bad journalism was no secret, but today the buried the news of Jim Johnson under Brett Favre announcing he's staying put... Oh, and Michael Vick's next team was in the mix there, followed by Plaxico Burress news, as well as other trivial news...I find that extremely distasteful and ESPN should be ashamed.

Ditto for NFL.com

Favre, Favre, Favre… wtf? Some loser that isn’t coming back is more important than Jim Johnson’s death? The hell?

Fuck both of them. They lost my support and views.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Sports Illustrated.com have about 4 articles on their page about Favre, one little sidelink for JJ. Sad, sad world we live in.

"If they end up 2-14 and both of those wins came against Dallas, that's a pretty good year."

ESPN Headline

Favre passes.

I know ESPN means it as a pun, but it’s in poor taste, considering.

yeah i saw that...

what ignorance. you would think that amongst all the “experts” over there at espn, someone would have the common sense to change that picture. horrible.

Nfl Network Too

NFL Network discussed it briefly, which is sad…I think the Eagles should wear JJ on the helmet the whole year and we should retire Dawks and him JJ in back to back weeks. I have more respect for Couglin then any of the networks, JJ was a gentlemen and scholar.

good thought but i think we have to wait till a player retires before retiring his number

at least that, i dont know if the eagles have a HOF requirement for retiring numbers

eesh

I hope Farve announced his plans before he knew JJ passed on, or he’s an even bigger SOB than I thought. I think the media has a huge obsession with Farve which really clouds their judgment. The rest of America is sick of him.

On a positive note, it makes me very happy to see that many other fans around the league knew how great JJ was and are coming to this site and others to pay respect to him. It’s something you don’t see all the time when a tragedy like this happens.

I feel the same way

Just head over to our blog, Stampede Blue, and you will see BBS, the head blogger have a huge rant on ESPN. I mean Brett Favre has no impact on a team right now since he is not playing, but Jim Johnson was still coaching and his passing does have an impact. This isnt like a retired player or coach passing, where you have a small tribute and thats it, this is impactful for the upcoming season., Shame on ESPN for having such little regard for one of the greatest minds and very important person for the Eagles success.

Hopefully they will catch wind of how big a deal this is ...

… not just to Eagle fans, but to fans of the game.

If it makes you feel any better, put in the position to make the same decision, I would go Johnson 100 times of out 100 over re-treaded ground like Vick and Favre any day of the week. Sometimes there are stories you can’t get enough of (McNair) and sometimes there’s overkill.

you also have to see it as a sensative topic

yes those who care most like us have been informed by out local medias … but there is a possibility that the networks want to take a pre meditated approach when giving tribute to a genius of football … give it time … they will acknowledge jim in a fashionable way … and if they dont ? then slander away … not defending espn or anything of tha nature … its just sad and im not in any rush to be reminded of our loss more than finding out here

I was about to post an article that said almost

the same thing…

FUCK favre
FUCK vice
FUCK gloxico

I can even put in words what JJ has done for the eagles. He has 5 assistants who are in good positions BAL HC, STL HC, SD DC, MIN DC.. and now PHI DC…

McDermott is now under alot of pressure. But the good thing is JJ hand picked him many years ago and taught him everything. JJ scripted the games and did was amazing at it.. Hopefully McDermott will be too. You just have to think that something is there(in McDermott) that made JJ want to teach him everything he knew, there has to be something..

I SAY WE GO WIN THE SUPERBOWL AND PLACE THE TROPHY ON JJ’S GRAVE…

Sad Day in Eagle Nation

First off my condolences to the Johnson family, my the peace of God that passes all understanding keep your heart and mind. As a human I am shcocked and appalled how the ESPN company higher up’s, cause I can not believe that the sports reporters choose which stories to run. Even the Vernon Forrest tragedy was swept under the rug so to say. I do want to thank JJ for the last 10 years that he was on loan to the Eagles and the city of Philadelphia. You will be missed

im sorry

im not gonna be an asshole .. and i am extremly sad .. i loved JJ .. hes one of the best coordinators for a long time .. but honestly .. if im running espn .. what could possibly be a bigger story than favre .. the man has been on the news every day for months .. and finally makes his decesion .. thats breaking news .. and has to be the first thing on espn .. i know it sucks we lost JJ .. he was a great coordinator and looked to be a great person .. i didnt know him personally but ive gotten that impression .. but espn is a national media market … so they have to lead off with national storys .. if the seahawks d coordinator dies .. its not going to trump favre .. i mean were all biased beacuse we love JJ .. but favre is bigger news .. and so is vick .. i know it sucks JJ died and for once i am not taking the asshole approach .. just merly defending ESPN .. because they covered the national storys first .. which is what any good national media network would do ..

by jack is better than asante on Jul 29, 2009 1:16 AM EDT reply actions

I can see your point somewhat.

I do agree it was ok for them to lead with the national headlines, even so ESPN should still have more then a 10 second moment of silence leading to a commercial on NFL Live. I would have liked to hear what Herman Edwards or Mark Schlereth would have had to say about the subject. Even let Wingo say something. I just hope they come around tomorrow and have a longer segment on the morning Sportscenter. If nothing is done, however, that is very shameful on ESPN’s part. Also, they did broadcast the Andy Reid Joe Banner press conference live on ESPN News.

Because they sat down and said “Well, Favre and Vick are the bigger stories.”

I agree

I understand why they talked about Favre and Vick but you also have to take into account that there shows are done live 1once everyday then they replay it all day so they dont really cut in there, they just make it scroll across the bottom.. They should say something today though..

But as far as there website, they normally just put side links for people who die. Also I was pissed last night about it but after a night of sleep and thinking about it, its the fact that we actually knew what he did for us and we actually “knew” him that were so outraged about them not saying anything. But im still upset they didnt give him the respect of saying something yesterday, if they would’ve broken in and said “jim johnson the eagles DC from 1999-2009 has died after his fight with Cancer, there will be more on this later” that would have been good enough.

by wild_eagle on Jul 29, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

what could possibly be a bigger story than favre

…someone’s death…

and finally makes his decesion .. thats breaking news

A jackass making his decision to whether or not to play again for the third season in the row. Where the news in that?

i mean were all biased beacuse we love JJ

Can you NOT call us bias in one bloody topic? Or, hell, just stop posting in topics.

but favre is bigger news .. and so is vick ..

Former is a self center diva that treat himself like a God. Latter is a convicted felon. That’s not “bigger news”. That’s “flashier news”. Talking about them doesn’t make anyone upset like it does when you talk about someone’s death. Not to mention JJ was one of the most well-known DC in the league…that’s national.

And it’s BULLSHIT that a couple of losers, washed up, good for nothing jackasses QBs is more important than someone’s death just because their name are “Favre” and “Vick”. Favre isn’t coming back so he affects no one. There isn’t a team stupid enough to sign Vick as a QB, WR, whatever is on their mind. Neither contribute to the seasons. JJ’s death does. It means we don’t have a brilliant defensive mind to coach or even just help out as an adviser to Sean and everyone on defense.

God, the “national media” pisses me off…

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Imp on Jul 29, 2009 1:55 AM EDT reply actions

but favre is bigger news .. and so is vick ..

I highly doubt Vick was even news. It was probably mindless speculation about where they think he’ll go. Which was probably also recycled garbage they’ve been saying for weeks.

As for the rest, I already disliked ESPN for their random biases like Favre and such, but this don’t change anything for me.

Favre was the flashier story, that was going to get them better ratings. I would have shocked if they didn’t lead with him. They place so much importance on random things with Favre, you knew the actual decision was going to be absolutely huge for them.

by FredEx on Jul 29, 2009 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Its a joke

That Favre keeps getting so much attention. Arguably the top defensive co-ordinator in the league, 22 years of service to the NFL, amazing community guy and leader….and Favre gets 2 stories, and the top 3 videos on NFL.com…..and Jimmy Johnson’s death is down the page

Where is the respect?

Again

I don’t like defending ESPN cuz they are the idiots running the Farve circus, as well as the Plax and Vick things, but who exactly knows when JJ did pass?

They usually do report breaking news like this right away, but I heard about this basically around 5:30 yesterday.

There was no news that JJ’s health really was headed towards end, so I don’t know if anyone really excpected it? I know I had the feeling he was at least going through chemo and all that.

If ESPN today continues to report Rachel Nichols from Farve’s bathroom, then they really should be ashamed.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 29, 2009 6:06 AM EDT reply actions

yeah i kinda feel the same way

but i guess the eagles were keeping it under wraps because they didnt want the traveling media circus all over JJ as his cancer took a turn for the worst.. JJ never took the spotlight during his tenure here and, even in his death, he took the quiet way out. that just seemed to be the kind of person he was, intentional or not, ESPN and others have remembered Johnson the way he probably would have wanted it. I mean, who in their right mind would want the media so involved in their lives as it has been in favre’s, vick’s, and plaxico’s this offseason. certainly, NOT Jim Johnson.

JJ will always be remembered and I hope the birds can win it this year for the man and his family. RIP.

i've been listening to mike and mike..

I admit I missed about 15 minutes of the show this morning, but so far I haven’t heard anything from them. They actually just used the hook “it is the end of an era, the story coming up after this”. They then proceeded to talk about the dodgers sports caster retiring next year.

i know favre’s decision to not make a change might be bigger on a national scale, but espn should at least have the respect to honor one of the finest dc’s of the decade more than they did. people are going to watch espn and go to its crappy, video-ridden website no matter what. it annoys me. whether it’s garbage like this or having to listen to chris berman’s “back back back back back back” every three seconds at the homerun derby… it just sickens me.

by awd777 on Jul 29, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, I did some reasearch

When Gene Upshaw died, they announced it in a quiet manner, then a few days later did one of those stories on him about how he played in the NFL and so on..

I would expect to see the same for Johnson.

Also you have to take into account that they tape there shows one time then play them over(sportscenter) and the other shows such as PTI and stuff are pre-recorded so they cant just go in and do that. They did however put some stuff on sportscenter this morning, they talked about his death and how he was an assistant for 22 years and his 10 years with the eagles. I would expect to see alot of stories about him during the preseason and most likely something honoring him during the first week or so of the regular season…

Im not defending ESPN 100% they should’ve at least done one of those “breaking stories” where they interupt the show and do a live thing just saying something. But you also have to remember they pre-record just about everything.

As for the Espn and NFL websites I really dont know, they update there websites 2-3 times a day unless something big happens. However they did put an article up there. Also the reason they have a video for Favre and Vick is because those are easy to make, you get favre talking over the past few months, you get all the vick stories and cut them up to make a video.. For JJ they are going to have to go into archives and pull video’s of him, edit them and then do a story on him. That takes more than 1 day. Also they released this at 6pm EST so by that time there pretty much done working for the day(if there on the east coast)

Im as upset as the rest of you guy that JJ wasnt given the respect. But you have to look at what goes on at ESPN to understand whats going on… Even when Sean Taylor died it took a day or to to get an in depth story so I would rather them wait a day, get an in depth story than to make an half assed on that doesnt tell us anything.

by wild_eagle on Jul 29, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

yea

out side of mcnair .. deaths generally arnt the lead story .. vernon forrest did not lead off sports center either .. and hes a bigger name than JJ

by jack is better than asante on Jul 29, 2009 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah you also have to account for the fact that

they have been preparing what they’re going to say about Favre coming back(or not) for weeks and weeks, either way they had something ready.
They also did the same for vick

It takes days to produce a video that pays tribute to someone.

by wild_eagle on Jul 29, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

idc

if your saying they didnt cover the story well enough than fine .. if your saying that JJ should be before favre than thats just dumb
