McDermott to officially be named DC
The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have officially named Sean McDermott
defensive coordinator. Head coach Andy Reid will introduce McDermott at a press conference at 1 PM on Saturday which you can see live on PhiladelphiaEagles.com.
McDermott, 35, was one of the few NFL assistants to have successfully mentored two different position groups, after stints as a linebackers coach and a secondary coach. He worked closely with Jim Johnson in all phases of the defensive game plan and was the longest tenured defensive assistant coach under Johnson.
per PhiladelphiaEagles.com
The report also states that Andy will address Jim Johnson's status at the press conference tomorrow. This seems to be a clear indication that the organization does not expect Jim Johnson back anytime soon, if ever. I know everyone here at BGN wishes Mr. Johnson and his family nothing but the best, and we all hope and pray for his battle with cancer to prevail. It's impossible to replace a man like Jim Johnson, but Sean McDermott has the confidence of the players and the coaching staff, has been in the system for several years and by all reports is a bright, competitive coach ready to make this defense his own.

This is extremely sad news. It really seems as if JJ’s chances of recovering are very slim. But nothing is impossible. This isn’t the way that Sean would’ve liked to become a DC, but I hope that he comes close to being the next JJ.
I'm not ready to move on from #20.
or maybe he just needs time to recover

Given the success of some of JJ’s proteges (Spags, John Harbaugh, Leslie Frazier) I know that McDermott’s gonna do a great job. Sad to see JJ go, even though I think we all knew it was coming. :(

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
godspeed to JJ
i forgot that he produced Frasier…
What differences are you guys expecting from McDermot in scheme? I think a little more variation, maybe a 3-4 look a couple times a game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Sean McDermott has replaced Jim Johnson as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator, two days before the team opens training camp.
The 68-year-old Johnson took an indefinite leave of absence in May to continue treatment for a cancerous tumor on his spine. It’s uncertain whether he’ll return to the team in any capacity.
"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Jim Johnson and his family as they battle through this difficult time in his cancer treatments," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Friday. "I have been in constant communication with Jim and his wife throughout this offseason and they are thankful for all the support they have received from the Eagles organization, the fans and the entire NFL community."
McDermott, 35, will be introduced at a news conference on Saturday afternoon. He ran the defense in Johnson’s absence after serving as secondary coach last year.
McDermott originally joined the Eagles in 1998 as a scouting administrative coordinator, and has served in various roles as an assistant on the defensive staff.
"We have full confidence he can continue to lead this defense in his new role," Reid said. "He showed great command and presence in the offseason camps and has had an opportunity to learn from the best in the business. He’s very smart, works very hard, and has a good rapport with the players and the assistant coaches. He’s ready for this and I’m confident he’ll do a great job."
McDermott has big shoes to fill. Johnson is widely regarded as one of the top defensive masterminds in the game. He’s known for his aggressive, attacking style and his defenses have played a major role in the team’s success over the last decade.
Last year, the Eagles finished third in total defense and fourth in points allowed. They advanced to the NFC title game for the fifth time in 10 seasons.
Johnson spent two seasons in the NFL as a player with the Buffalo Bills in 1963-64. He began his coaching career at Missouri Southern in 1967, and was the secondary coach at Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish won the national championship in 1977.
Johnson spent the last 23 seasons coaching in the NFL, including 10 years as Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator.

hang in there JJ
he is an amazing coach and has groomed the Eagles D into one of the best in the NFL. i wish him the best of luck in his recovery.
Even though he has ENORMOUS shoes to fill (and I’m not sure enormous fully covers it), McDermott is the logical replacement. Hopefully he has success similar to Spags with the Giants. I believe Johnson’s coaching career is likely over (I really hope I’m wrong), but at this point I’m really praying the guy wins his battle. Get well soon JJ.
