Could Michael Vick End Up in the NFC East?

061029_vick_hmed_130p

As you all probably know by now, former Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick has been officially released from house arrest today after serving a 23-month sentence for dogfighting charges. Now, only two obstacles stand between Vick and a return to the NFL:

  1. Convincing commissioner Roger Goodell  to allow him back into the league
  2. Convincing head coaches around the league that he is ready to play again after almost two years out of football

Assuming Vick can worm his way back into professional football, there are a few teams who might give him a look to help out at quarterback. Keep in mind that Vick might have to settle for a #2 or #3 position on a team, because the problems his signing will cause will surely keep the pickings slim. The United Football League has already extended an invitation to Vick should he not be allowed back for another year by Goodell, but you can be sure that the ex-Falcon is itching to earn back his once illustrious position in the NFL and will pursue that to the best of his abilities.

What concerns the Eagles fan base, though, is whether or not the Birds will have to face Vick at some point during the upcoming season. Here is a look at how likely that scenario will be:

The Washington Redskins:

They are the only NFC East team consistently mentioned with Vick's return to the NFL. And why shouldn't they be? Owner Dan Snyder and Head Coach Jim Zorn have been pursuing a new QB to replace the less-than-stellar Jason Campbell for the entire offseason. It all started with the failed attempt at trading for the Broncos' Jay Cutler and continued throughout the draft, when the Jets snatched away the coveted Mark Sanchez. Although the Skins' front office claims they aren't interested in Vick, the reality is that this could very well be Campbell's last year in Washington. His contract ends after the 2009 season, and backup QB Todd Collins turns 38 in November. The only quarterback left on the charts will be young Colt Brennan, who has yet to play a snap in the NFL. The Redskins need some insurance for the future, and fast. Vick will start to look pretty tempting down the road.

I think [Vick] deserves a chance to play again and I think somebody will take a run at him and I think he could be a great producer in the NFL. Obviously we've seen him do that before, but I think it's gonna take the right team right place, and I think he deserves another chance.

-Former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs

The Dallas Cowboys:

In an article that enraged users over at BloggingTheBoys, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio claimed that the Cowboys might be interested in Vick because his skill level is comparable to Tony Romo's. USA Today also thought the Vick-to-Dallas idea had some merit, and had this to say:

Like Jerry Jones has ever run from a public relations challenge. It's also easy to see Vick's talents incorporated into an offense that lacks proven receivers and would rely on Jon Kitna if Tony Romo goes down again.

While the Cowboys' fan base would likely be against Vick's acquisition, it would certainly bring more security to the QB position. Kitna turns 37 in September and spent most of last year on injured reserve. Vick could easily oust him and Brooks Bollinger for the backup quarterback spot, leaving rookie Stephen McGee time to develop in the 3rd position.

The New York Giants:

While Vick might be a tempting option to replace the 30-year-old David Carr in the #2 spot, it is highly unlikely that the team will put up with any more problem players after the departure of Plaxico Burress. Or, to put it in the words of Giants Owner John Mara:

"No. On a lot of levels, no."

The Philadelphia Eagles:

Andy Reid and the front office pride themselves in having a roster full of classy players who cause little to no off-the-field issues. Donovan McNabb is the clear-cut starter for this team, and the staff still has high hopes for the young Kevin Kolb. Although most people would think that Vick has no chance of coming to Philadelphia, USA Today conjured up this scenario:

Andy Reid knew how to deploy Donovan McNabb back when he ran and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn while passing. And RB Brian Westbrook could easily reprise Warrick Dunn's role as Vick's backfield sidekick. But this only seems like a practical marriage if McNabb goes down and Kevin Kolb and A.J. Feeley are stinking up the Linc.

Right. I think the Eagles pass on that one, thanks.

Although Vick's return to the NFL could take another year (or not happen at all) you can be sure that teams around the league are looking at him and adjusting their strategies around his return. So, where do you think he will land?

I think the Redskins have said publicly that they have no interest in Vick.

However, if another NFC East (the Eagles excluded) wants to sign him, by all means… I’ll be more than happy to see it happen… The Eagles have always had his number, and quite frankly, it can’t be easy to just jump right back into the saddle after being away so long (especially for a QB).

Redskins Maybe... but other than that no one in the NFC East

I coould have seen him with the Vikings, but thanks to Brett Favre….

I would love to see him in Buffalo w/ TO, that would be a nice reality show, probably not good for children

he'll go to the ufl...

it would actually be perfect for him. he would probably get paid around $1 million to play a short season that ends around thanksgiving. at that time (assuming he played well, demonstrated good behavior, and was reinstated into the nfl), he could sign with a team in need of a qb.

by birdsflyinhigh2590 on Jul 21, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

actually i think your right...

wikipedia had this quote…

The UFL has a proposed structure by which each team will operate… They hope to be paying at least 10 players on each roster in excess of $1 million.

…but it’s from a 2-year-old article, so i’m sure things have changed. still, $620,000 is a nice pay day for such a short season. i wouldn’t be surprised if it happened.

he's gonna be suspended for a year

so this isnt really relevant but if the football gods granted vick reinstatement this year i could see him in a skins or a cowboys uni… are the 49ers a reach? maybe the texans? theyve both got some pieces to put together a run but both need a decent qb and vick could fit in

cowboys

cowboys just went out and got kitna as insurance .. hes one of the best back ups in the nfl .. vick would only go there as a return man / wr

i was assuming a romo

injury early to mid way through the season (pinky again?)

i forgot to mention the raiders… al davis is probably salivating over vicks blazing speed waiting for goodell to reinstate him so he can then sign him to a ridiculous, blockbuster contract

by RIP26_litodoin'work on Jul 21, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

i doubt vick at 29 has the “blazing speed” that he once had. plus, he’s always been a qb. to assume that he would go anywhere to be a wr or return is pretty absurd.

by awd777 on Jul 21, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

youve got to take into account the other qbs in the league tho

when you factor vicks speed into the equation… no other legitimate qb would come close to him in a footrace (not saying he’s a legitimate qb but he’s better than a lot of starters out there, a lot)

by RIP26_litodoin'work on Jul 21, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

i do agree that vick would still be one of the faster/fastest nfl quarterbacks if reinstated back into the league. i was mainly commenting to that i doubt anyone would legitamately look at vick as a wr/return man. someone may like him as a twice a game wildcat option, but no more than that.

by awd777 on Jul 21, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

First of all, he won't be in the NFL this season.

I just don’t see Goodell giving him the greenlight yet. Probably a year long suspension if I were to guess. Secondly, bring it on. I hope someone in the NFC East signs him. He was overrated before he got busted and with two years out of the game, he’ll be damn near useless. He might still have some speed, but we’ve proven we can deal with that, especially with the way he uses it.

by NOLACuse on Jul 21, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

I highly doubt he's coming to the NFC East

If he does,it’ll be with the Cowboys, but I don’t think thats going to happen. I definetly expect him to be in a Raiders uniform at the start of the 2010 season,if he even gets reinstated. It may add some more pressure to JaMarcus Russel, like bringing in Jeff Garcia did,and it’s Al Davis,I don’t think he’ll care about the public backlash that will come along with signing him.

i would take vick

hes a weapon .. use him in the slot .. he would be quite siruptive .. kordell steward did it .. randell el made the trasition

by jack is better than asante on Jul 21, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

kordell stewarts receiving stats…

1995 – age 23 – 14 receptions
1996 – age 24 – 17 receptions
1997 – age 25 – no receptions
1998 – age 26 – 1 reception
1999 – age 27 – 9 receptions
2000+ – age 28+ – no receptions

total: 41 receptions over 11 seasons.

randle el receiving stats…

2002 – age 23 – 47 receptions
2003 – age 24 – 37 receptions
2004 – age 25 – 43 receptions
2005 – age 26 – 35 receptions
2006 – age 27 – 32 receptions
2007 – age 28 – 51 receptions
2008 – age 29 – 53 receptions

total: 298 receptions over 7 years

basically, stewart really wasn’t a wr weapon. randle el is average at best. signing vick (age 29, two years away from football, only qb experience, horrible press) for the sole purpose of playing wr would be foolish.

you’re right though… he would be quite siruptive… or something like that.

by awd777 on Jul 21, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

As awd777 pointed out, Kordell was not a good example.

If you want a weapon in the slot to be siruptive, just use Maclin.

Maclin is actually a WR by trade. Even if route running is a work in progress I assume it’s better than Vick’s.

Maclin’s will probably learn the playbook faster. He if nothing else has a head start.

He doesn’t come with bad PR (I knew you don’t care about this, but throwing it out there for everyone else).

Related to PR, he hasn’t be sitting in jail, he’s been playing football. Maclin should be in top shape and have zero rust (two things that may likely come into play with Vick)

Maclin is taller than Vick.

vick

do you all forget how good vick is in the open field? is he the same .. i dunno .. but if he is he will help any team that signs him .. he can play trick plays and the slot .. it makes a lot of sense to me

by jack is better than asante on Jul 21, 2009 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

If Vick can’t run routes, get open, and/or catch the ball he’s never going to be in the open field.

by FredEx on Jul 21, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll agree with you.

When the Cowboys or the Redskins inevitably sign him, I’m going to be a lot more scared of those teams.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Jul 21, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, he’s great in the open field. Question – How is he going to get into the open field?

by JimmyK on Jul 21, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Oops, FredEx beat me to that point.

by JimmyK on Jul 21, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

He was always coming from a position of a broken play though.

His open field success came when the defense was on their heels. One thing that sticks out in my mind is how he carried the ball. If he was a RB or WR that ball would get knocked loose 6 or 7 times out of 10. Not to mention the beating he would take that he has never been all that used to. He doesn’t scare me one bit. Bring him in. The Eagles D would devour him.

by NOLACuse on Jul 22, 2009 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

yea..

in a wildcat formation, with actual play calling, vick would lose so many fumbles. he’s know for making something out of nothing and not usually for something out of something

by RIP26_litodoin'work on Jul 22, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it's just me...

But doesn’t anyone think he should be kept out at least another year on principle? NFL players need to learn that they’re not above the law…

o bs

let him play .. he already got punished too hard .. fuckin stallworth killed a guy .. vick killed some dogs .. and vick is soo fuckin hard to tackle .. you dont think a team can design screens to get him the ball in the open field .. thats wha we do for westy. .. disign plays specifically for that

by jack is better than asante on Jul 21, 2009 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

I must agree with Jibta

I think if Vick can get anywhere near his previous form that he can provide a threat at some offensive position. On the other hand he might just be a guy with amazing athletism who took advantage of the open field that QBs find during passing plays.

by birdsflyinhigh2590 on Jul 22, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Between bad PR and team chemistry (for those who believe in that kind of thing) and like you said the advantage he got from being a QB, makes signing him is a risk for sure. In addition to the fact its possible he’s no where close to athlete was back then, he also has ball security issues, and may have poor route running and receiving skills.

by FredEx on Jul 22, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

your right

But it could still go both ways. But like I said and basically you said only if he can get back to his previous form.

by birdsflyinhigh2590 on Jul 22, 2009 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it can definitely go both ways. I don’t want to imply otherwise.

Just pointing out all the flaws and what-ifs that make me think its a bad idea, especially for an already solid team (Based on past production (which is dangerous/unfair to do) Jackson, Curtis, and Brown could all surpass or at least flirt with 1000, Avant appears to be solid on 3rd downs, and Maclin has big time potential)) that doesn’t worry about ticket sales.

by FredEx on Jul 22, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

lol oh hell no

I was talkin about him playing for another team the only way he would be an eagle is every player bought a pitbull and decided to start dogfighting haha

dont you think teams have tried stuff like that already...

if vick could be used in plays like that, why wouldnt the bears just design screen plays for devin hester?

by RIP26_litodoin'work on Jul 22, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

they should do that. they’re dumb for not direct-snapping it to hester at least a few times a season

I'm kinda sick of the Donte Stallworth and Leonard Little comparisons...

Did Stallworth and Little choke their victims to death with their own hands. Did they purposely drown their victims? Did they own (and use) a device called a “rape stand?”

Look, I’m not saying Stallworth and Little shouldn’t be punished harshly, but at least what they did was accidental. Vick is an absolutely despicable scumbag for what he did.

by JimmyK on Jul 22, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

haha

yea me too .. i mean who ever signs him is gonna get a dynamic playmaker … u dont have to be a great route runner to catch those wrs screens and flea flickers .. he wont be anywhere near what he was .. but he can help a team .. and why not .. hes gonna cost basically nothing .. worth a shot .. if he cant play cut him . i think he will help some team .. he can deff return kicks .. and the only person he would beat out would be baskett .. but we have maclin for punts and hobbs for KR . . and westy and jackson can catch those screens .. but he helps someone

by jack is better than asante on Jul 22, 2009 2:20 AM EDT reply actions

I think it was the double reverse pass, worked everytime.

by birdsflyinhigh2590 on Jul 22, 2009 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

yea like the two times they did it that ONE season

im sure teams are aware of those kind of plays after the steelers burned them all in that one postseason run in like 05 or 06 or w e

its just not worth getting the man unless you’re THAT desperate at qb.. thats the position he can accel at because he had the potential to burn you with his feet or his arm (not as much but out of the pocket he was decent enough) and that gave defenses nightmares

by RIP26_litodoin'work on Jul 22, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Im betting on the Patriots to eventually sign him

Patriots were interested in Pat White for some wildcat action. Probably want to give the Dolphins a taste of their own medicine. Besides, Bill Belichick turned a certain “thug-like” player into having one of the most if not most successful season of all time for his position. Mike Vick would flourish in the wildcat in New England.

Also...

Vick has always been an average QB. Strong arm and great rushing skills. That’s about it. Career 75.7 rating, passed for 20 tds only once, and never crossed 3000 yards passing.Criminal record and jail time aside, I wouldn’t want him as my starting QB anyway. He would best fit at 2nd string or Wildcat formations.

Vick has said he wants to play QB

and I know beggars can’t be choosers, but if his only option is playing somewhere not in the NFL for a year, he’ll go there to show he can QB.

After the initial furor dies down, i.e. if an NFL team with a good rep signs him and doesn’t need to use him right away, it could be a good long-term investment.

Vick is physically gifted. He’s out of football shape for sure, but it’s not like he became an exceptional athlete solely through hard work.

You could almost make the case that the lack of pounding his body has taken for two years (snicker here for jailhouse joke) is a positive for a QB.

32 teams are going to publically say they aren’t interested. But it only takes one crazy GM to buck the trend, especially if the price is low enough, stash him and see what they can get out of him.

In the East I would say only the Redskins

Snyder could get real crazy, sign Vick, and trade for B. Marshall. I’d like that offense a lot more than what they have going on now. Highly doubt that happens.

My guesses for landing spots:
Cleveland, Buffalo, St. Louis, Carolina.
