Really interesting series of articles on factors to success
Over at this guy's Colts' blog http://www.stampedeblue.com/section/winning-stats (HT to Football Outsiders.com)
Yes, this guy says about 13,594 times that Peyton Manning is great, but if you can stand that, there's a bunch of facinating points he makes by analyzing the last 8 years or so of games and seeing if there is any correlation between conventional wisdom and actually winning football games. The most intersting thing that I found was that neither Yards per Carry nor RB Success (the FO stat) correlate very strongly with winning. The #1 factor for winning? Drive success rate, followed by Adjusted Net Passing Yards per Attempt.
I know that correlation does not equal causation, but it really struck me just how much more important passing is to winning than almost anything else in the NFL these days. Far, far more than running, red zone effeciency, or other old chestnuts we hear every year from the talking heads.
