First time Fantasy Football player
Hey everyone, I decided to give into the fantasy football craze thats been going on. This will be my first time playing FFB so I went with Yahoo sports and joined one of their public leagues. Just thought I could get some tips on what to do to have a good first season with FFB. I'll post the team I drafted (or should I say Yahoo drafted for me with my player recommendations) after the jump.
QB : Donovan Mcnabb - Phi (Alternate: Trent Edwards - Buf)
WR : Andre Johnson - Hou
WR : Eddie Royal - Den
WR : Desean Jackson - Phi
Alternate WR : Michael Crabtree - SF
Jeremy Maclin - Phi
RB : Pierre Thomas - NO
RB : Ryan Grant - GB
Alternate RB : Willie Parker - Pit
TE : Brandon Pettigrew - Det
Alternate TE : Brent Celek - Phi
Kicker : David Akers - Phi
Defense : Eagles
Alternate Defense : Carolina
So thats my team I guess. If you guys have any advice for a first timer, comment away.

Very Eagles oriented haha.
First of all, what type of league are you in and how do the points work for each position? Sometimes some leagues favor one position over another. Is it a PPR (points per reception) league?
I’m here to help since I’m a huge fantasy football guy.

You might want to trade for or sign another TE. While Celek’s numbers will certainly go up from last year, he might not be the best fantasy player at that position. Also, Pettigrew isn’t proven yet (and for that matter, neither is Stafford) it’s a risk, but it could pay off big. Still, you might not want to have two risky players in the same position.

true story. And with a rookie qb AND a rookie TE, the old saying “TEs are a rookie QBs best friend” doesn’t necessarily apply. It could work…but I don’t trust it. Depending on how your league works your strengths could be at RB or WR. For instance, if your league does give points for PPR and additionally it gives PPR points to RBs, RBs like Pierre Thomas are worth a little more than usual.

Having Crabtree and Maclin may be an issue down the line,
Both are rookies and may not play much. You may want to look into guys like Robert Meacham, Greg Camarillo, Ted Ginn Jr.
These guys all came on late last year, and are probrably available.
You are a little light at RB with Ryan Grant and Pierre Thomas. But runningback is hard to get. As they are drafted relatively high.
Guy like Derrick Ward may still be out there, he will have an increased load. Darren Sproles may be a good pick, but he was probrably gone by the time you picked.
TE is a crap shoot, other than Witten, most TE are terrible in fantasy, you can get the hottest ones durring the season. Although Celek is a solid choice IMO. Start him over Pettigrew.

Zach Miller gave me a consistent 10-12 pts a week. He came after I drafted and regretted drafting Kellen Winslow. You also forgot to mention Gonzo who was by far the best TE last season.
Crabtree isn’t as big a risk as Maclin because unlike Maclin, Crabtree will be starting week 1. Say no to Meacham. He is too inconsistent so he should only be looked to as a matchup play. He is only starting 2 WRs as par what he has put up. So no need to stack up mediocre talent compared to sleepers this early.

Start Willie Parker … if he’s healthy he’s a TD machine.

took the words right off my keyboard
dont go with grant, GB is a passing team first and probably going to have to be playing from behind as they get the kinks out of their new 3-4 defense

Hm...
QB: Okay. Better hope Edwards will provide nice numbers for McNabb’s bye week (or more), or else pick up a QB from the waivers right now.
RB: Okay. Pierre is somewhat overrated to be considered an RB1, but Grant and Parker are nice RB 2 options.
WR: Johnson is nice. The rest…two sophomores and two rooks? Kind of an iffy, risky move. I really like DeSean, and Royal was great last year, but year 2 is where things get shaky. Crabtree should get a little more looks than most rooks will this year, but still, two rookies that see less playing time than most WR2’s and 3’s on mediocre teams is a risky call.
TE: …really? A rookie TE? For the Lions? Might be a nice back-up if he produces by, I don’t know, week 10, but you need a solid TE. Fast. Look for Carlson, Scheffler, anyone.
K: Okay. No compliants. Kickers can easily go on good streaks and bad streaks, so change if needed.
Defense: Your best draft picks. Unfortunately, they really don’t produce enough to be considered fantasy game changers.
Overall grade: C+. I like McNabb, Johnson, and the Defense. Back-up WR’s lack consistency at this point, your RB’s range from mediocre starters to solid back-ups, virtually no reliable TE, and semi-weak back-up.
It’s not too bad for your first draft at all. And remember, Fantasy is the most unpredictable sport out there. ;) Good luck, and have fun! Hope you win.

QB : Donovan Mcnabb – Phi (Alternate: Trent Edwards – Buf)
WR : Andre Johnson – Hou this guy is a FREAK
WR : Eddie Royal – Den………..Eddie Royal? Bust.. better off with anyone Johnson is a HIGH pick but try to grab someone better at this level. Royal only makes plays because he doesnt demand a double team
WR : Desean Jackson – Phi great pick, took him as my last reciever last year and he produced just as much or more then my #1 T.O (vet). Double teamed and planed for yet still manages to sneak on by. 1300yd+,9TD,1TD pass from wildcat
Alternate WR : Michael Crabtree – SF You could not pay me to take this risk,
crabtree is fresh fish on the worst team in the NFL. go with the latter
Jeremy Maclin – Phi
RB : Pierre Thomas – NO Brian westbrook ALOT of yards and TD’s
RB : Ryan Grant – GB wont get them both
Alternate RB : Willie Parker – Pit
TE : Brandon Pettigrew – Det again way too risky, how about gonzo or gates if possible by some miracle?
Alternate TE : Brent Celek – Phi … Your choice its a tossup, he will be good but will he score enough TD’S with all the other action going on in the eagles O? Djax Westy and maybe avant will be taking tons of tosses (handoff), not to mention the addition of weaver which changes a bit more then most believe
Kicker : David Akers – Phi YES. .top kicker
Defense : Eagles Yes go with eagles, unavailable? Steelers..
Alternate Defense : Carolina
Just my opinion.. not like it really matters, I did take

Alot of people aren’t sold on Eddie Royal which is fine because I agree he did a lot as a 2nd WR to Marshall. But I want to point out what he did at the beginning of the season when Marshall was not in the lineup: 9 rec for 146 and a td Week 1 vs Oakland (alright its oakland but still he was targetted a lot and thats an automatic +).
Eddie Royal is a boss and with Marshall’s situation up in the air, Royal is definitely a great pick. Even if Marshall does come back, I expect Royal’s production to be the same as whats expected (regardless if its Orton throwing the ball to him).

Jeremy Maclin – Phi
Crabtree isnt on the worst team in the NFL, Pettigrew is. Also i would not take two recievers on the same team, lol. grab a number 1 and jackson, You should be able to make it happen if you select djax high enough. Stack your WR early
