Seven Eagles Destined for Success

As a passionate Eagles fan, it's tough to select only a few players on the team that are "above the rest". And, once again, we have little to discuss in this "dry" part of the offseason, so I have taken my time and chosen seven members of the current roster that I believe are destined to succeed, in both 2009, and the future. The players selected are not the ones you expect to succeed, like Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, or Asante Samuel, but are some that may experience a great deal of success for the first time. So, cure that offseason cancer with a quick look at some of the Eagles that we should be on the look out for in the near future:

Four Eagles destined for success in 2009...
  1. Victor Abiamiri, DE, #95: With 2 years of experience under his belt, and a lot of knowledge gained from watching the starters, Abiamiri (see picture) is set to begin a heated competition with fellow DE Juqua Parker for the starting left end spot. His size and speed complements the Defensive Tackles well, and whether he beats out Parker for the starting spot or not, I think he'll prove to be a dominant force on the defensive line.
  2. Kevin Curtis, WR, #80: Although Curtis has already shown that he can be the "go-to guy" as a receiver (see 2007 season), a 2008 preseason injury cost him nearly half of the regular season. According to doctors, Kevin is ahead of schedule and is ready to get on the field, and he said so himself during a recent charity event. I see Curtis returning close to his '07 form, and providing Donovan McNabb with another great offensive target.
  3. Trevor Laws, DT, #93: In his rookie campaign last season, Laws was unable to find the field much of the time, but became a late-season force as a quality backup, recording a total of 16 tackles. With Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley secured at the starting DT spots, Laws can take advantage of the backup battles by facing off against rookie Jervonte Jackson and perhaps gaining the number 3 position on the DT depth chart. If he does so, which I am confident he will, look for Laws to see a major increase in playing time, and become a very beneficial factor on the defensive line.
  4. Lorenzo Booker, RB, #25: Yes, yes. I know what you're all thinking..."You put a guy who failed to gain even 60 rushing yards on the 'Destined for Success List'?!". My answer: Booker displayed a lot of potential while performing for the Dolphins in his 2007 rookie year, and now with rookie LeSean McCoy and Eldra Buckley on board at the runningback position, Booker will have to give all he's got to make the team. I have a strong feeling that he will open the season as the backup to Westbrook (with McCoy being the 3rd back), and if he can stay healthy, a productive reserve season should be on the way from Lorenzo.

Three Eagles destined for success after 2009...

  1. Macho Harris, CB/S, #35: Because of the depth at the Safety positions the Eagles have at the moment, I don't foresee Victor "Macho" Harris to play a whole lot in 2009. But with his versatility and determination, Harris should find a spot on the roster good enough for a decent amount of playing time in the coming years, and when he does, expect an explosion of talent. He is a ball-hawk and has quick reflexes, which should prove to be a key in the defense in the years following '09.
  2. Bryan Smith, DE, #63: When looking at Smith's 2008 rookie year, you don't see alot of anything. In fact, you don't see anything at all. He was inactive for the majority of the season, and spent time being mentored by defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. But once the likes of Darren Howard and Juqua Parker are gone from the team (I'd give at least a few more years), expect Smith to step into a backup role that spells the starters for a few plays. With his athleticism, Smith should be able to shine while taking backup reps, and could work his way into a very good reserve player, and eventually the starter.
  3. Quintin Demps, FS, #39: Although I see Demps as a quality starting safety in 2009, I believe his better years will come after this upcoming season. Once he has some experience as the lead guy, he should be able to throttle his immense amount of talent, and turn it into that of a great professional. No, I don't think he's the second coming of Brian Dawkins, but he should mature into a feared player within the next few years. But not in 2009.

After evaluating this brief look at some Eagles expected to break into a successful pattern within the next few years, we have seven great Eagles destined for success.

Booker

Agree with Abiamiri, Curtis, and Laws, but here’s my issue with Booker…

Recently I was debating with some of the Skins fans about the likelihood of Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly turning into great receivers one day, and their spin was the time-tested argument that “it takes 2-3 years for a receiver to get acclimated to the NFL.” Now, I do believe in that theory, but along the way, I have to at least see flashes of greatness at some point along the way, and I’d never seen that out of Thomas or Kelly.

The same thing can be said of Booker. Booker got plenty of playing time early in the season, and I know it’s a complicated offense, but he showed me absolutely nothing. Nothing.

exactly

go back and watch the week 2 eagles-dallas game last season

first or second drive, eagles in the redzone, pass to booker with one guy between him and the endzone and he was tackled for a gain of 2, eagles settled for the field goal.

you need to make those plays or at the least make it look like it was hard for the guy to tackle you

I disagree with Lorenzo Booker. What makes this season any different from last? You ‘feel’ he’ll be second string. It’s time to face facts. It’s his third year in the league and he still hasn’t shown he can be considered a legitimate rushing threat if Westbrook goes down. If he were really destined for success any not just a backup, he would have shown some sparks of brilliance already.

Good point

I know that Booker has not looked anywhere near a great RB, but I had to throw something in there to make this unique. And with the presence of McCoy, I think he’ll feel more obligated to perform at his highest.

I expect Curtis to have modest success this season. The offense has a lot of weapons, and the Eagles like to spread the ball around. I think he will finish the year with respectable stats, say, 55-60 balls for 700 yards. But, he will be a fantasy nightmare, as his production is sure to come in bursts.

Regarding Booker, I have to take the consensus view. I just did not see anything at all last year that shows he is destined for more playing time. I would not be shocked if he is not on the 53 man.

I do like Macho Harris. I really think he is going to be a good pro.

Bookers not even a lock to make the team this year. no way he’s destined for success.

Booker makes the team just incase because he has slight experience with the offense in the event of a tragety i wont even speak of at the RB position.

Is it just me or did booker seem to run right into people, and just fall over without making any type of attempt whatsoever?
