Outtake's Pre-Training Camp 53-Man Roster Prediction
With training camp still nine days away, I have decided to subject the good people at BleedingGreenNation to yet another 53-man roster prediction, only this time with a depth chart! Hopefully, this will provide a little entertainment during a slow news period. So, without further ado, let's get started:
Quarterback
Projected Stater: Donovan McNabb
Backups: Kevin Kolb, A.J. Feeley
Analysis: Since the release of RFA Adam DiMichele, the roster has been set at the above three QBs. McNabb is the clear-cut starter, and the coaches are high on Kolb, who will be chomping at the bit to prove being worthy of his 2nd-round draft status. Feeley remains a reliable, if aging, number three.
Halfback
Projected Starter: Brian Westbrook
Backups: LeSean McCoy, Lorenzo Booker
Analysis: While Westbrook and McCoy are all but guaranteed the top two spots, Booker has raised questions ever since his less-than-stellar performance last season. A failed kick-returner coming off a 2.7 yards per carry season where he was projected by some to be the eventual successor of Westbrook, Booker has yet to win over the Eagles faithful. However, the coaches are not ready to give up on the young RB, who turned 25 last month. With the only other options for a number 3 RB being Eldra Buckley and converted fullback Kyle Eckel, Andy Reid is likely to stick with Booker for one more year.
Fullback
Projected Starter: Leonard Weaver
Backups: None
Analysis: Since his acquisition from the Seattle Seahawks, Weaver has been heralded as the first "true" fullback to hit the Eagles roster since the release of Thomas Tapeh. His starting spot is all but solidified, leaving competing fullbacks Kyle Eckel and Marcus Mailei to battle it out for a backup spot. However, with all the talent the Eagles have added to their roster this offseason, keeping a second fullback around just seems foolhardy.
Tight End
Projected Starter: Brent Celek
Backups: Cornelius Ingram, Matt Schobel
Analysis: Assuming Ingram fully recovers from his knee surgery by the start of the season, he and Celek will hold the top two spots. Longtime dud Matt Schobel will stick to the third TE spot, since converted DE Eugene Bright will likely need a year on the practice squad to develop into an NFL-quality tight end.
Wide Receiver
Projected Starters: DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis
Backups: Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Reggie Brown, Hank Baskett
Analysis: After a sensational rookie season, Jackson has secured his position at the top of the Eagle's WR pool. Curtis will likely act as the #2 while Maclin gets acclimated to playing in the big leagues. Don't be surprised though, if Maclin bumps Curtis back to a slot receiver position midway though the season. Avant's sure hands will keep him around for a while as a backup and 3rd down receiver. Baskett's special teams play will likely keep him around for another year as Brandon Gibson learns the offense. Finally, barring a trade with the Ravens, Reggie Brown will stick around and fight for playing time as the coaches give him one last chance to prove that he is worth his paycheck.
Offensive Tackle
Projected Starters: Jason Peters, Shawn Andrews
Backups: King Dunlap, Fenuki Tupou
Analysis: Assuming Jon Runyan doesn't get re-signed, Andrews and Peters are locks to start. Dunlap the behemoth has sat on the injured reserve for a full year, soaking up all the football knowledge he can. By now, he should be ready to take the field by storm, and will likely beat out Chris Patrick for a spot. We haven't seen much from rookie Fenuki Tupou, but it is likely that Winston Justice will have worn out the coaches' patience by the time preseason is over, thus opening up a slot for Tupou to slip in.
Offensive Guard
Projected Starters: Todd Herremans, Stacy Andrews
Backups: Max Jean-Gilles, Mike McGlynn
Analysis: After a broken ankle ended his season last year, Jean-Gilles should be ready to resume his role as a reliable backup guard. McGlynn saw minimal playing time during his rookie year, but should beat out both Mike Gibson and Paul Fanaika, who have no on-the-field experience.
Center
Projected Starter: Jamaal Jackson
Backup: Nick Cole
Analysis: After proving himself last year when Shawn Andrews and Max Jean-Gilles went down, Nick Cole will push for a starting job this season. However, Jackson knows that he cannot take his starting job for granted, and should strive perform at that near-pro-bowl level that is expected of him, thus winning the starting job.
Defensive End
Projected Starters: Trent Cole, Victor Abiamiri
Backups: Jaqua Parker, Darren Howard, Chris Clemons, Bryan Smith
Analysis: The coaches were high on Abiamiri last season, but an unfortunate wrist fracture caused him to miss several weeks, giving the starting spot to veteran Jaqua Parker. A healthy Abiamiri will win the staring position with a solid preseason, making our defensive line perhaps even more fearsome than it was last year. As for the rest of the personnel, Howard and Clemons both had admirable seasons and will stick around. Also, we should see a bit more out of Smith as he develops into a quality young DE.
Defensive Tackle
Projected Starters: Mike Patterson, Brodrick Bunkley
Backups: Trevor Laws
Analysis: After an 82-tackle, 2-sack season, Bunkley should see a lot more playing time this year. Patterson should also start, and Laws will continue to develop, giving us a vicious trio of DTs. Dan Klecko is also a great option here, but with a crowded roster, the Eagles will likely keep only 3 DTs, leaving Klecko as the odd man out.
Outside Linebacker
Projected Starters: Chris Gocong, Omar Gaither
Backups: Akeem Jordan, Tracy White
Analysis: Since Gaither lost his starting job to Jordan midway though last season, he has been fighting to get it back. Both can contribute on special teams, but Gaither's experience (at MLB as well as OLB) should edge him out over Jordan. White is a standout special teamer and should stick around for another year as rookie Moise Fokou learns the system. Tank Daniels, another special teams player last season, should just miss the roster due to his lack of discipline (a $5,000 facemask fine plus multiple penalties).
Middle Linebacker
Projected Starter: Stewart Bradley
Backup: Joe Mays
Analysis: Mays had a brilliant preseason last year, but disappeared during the regular season. The young ballhawk will certainly be fighting for more playing time this year, and will likely beat out CFL star Charleston Hughes for the backup MLB spot. Whether or not Mays sees the field this year all depends on the health of the standout Bradley.
Cornerback
Projected Starters: Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown
Backups: Ellis Hobbs, Joselio Hanson, Jack Ikegwuonu
Analysis: If Brown keeps his contract dispute under wraps like he has been doing recently, he should be able to concentrate enough to keep his starting job. Hobbs will make a legitimate push, but will likely help most on special teams and in the nickel set. Hanson is here for good after his above-average performance led to a 5-year contract extension, but will have to fight to crack the top 3 CB spots. He will most likely be used in dime packages this year. Ikegwuonu will be a reach to make the final roster, but is likely to impress after spending over a year recovering to his first-round talent status from a knee injury he sustained during the NFL Combine. Ike's recent acquittal should also help him concentrate 100% on football.
Free Safety
Projected Starter: Sean Jones
Backup: Quintin Demps
Analysis: Something about Demps just says "not ready." After his juvenile hit on Kurt Warner and his being burned by Larry Fitzgerald for a TD (granted, it's Larry Fitzgerald) in the NFC Championship game, it seems that Demps will require another year to blossom in the NFL. The coaches still have high hopes for Demps, and while he will be given plenty of opportunities during training camp and preseason, Sean Jones' experience and his knack for nabbing interceptions (4 last year with the Browns) should give him the honor of being the first Eagle to fill Dawkins' FS spot.
Strong Safety
Projected Starter: Quintin Mikell
Backup: Macho Harris
Analysis: Entrenched as the starter, Mikell is going nowhere. But after him, who will fill the void left by Sean Considine? The ex-Raider Rashad Baker has yet to find a team that will keep him for more than two seasons, so what does that tell you? CFL star Byron Parker turned 28 this March, and with the Eagles' youth movement, a 28-year-old "rookie" is not likely to crack the final roster. Enter Victor "Macho" Harris, a standout cornerback from Virginia Tech who envisions playing as a safety. He has the brain required to break down the X's and O's and has thus far impressed the coaches with his conversion to safety. He is even being considered as a return man candidate. Expect Macho to take the field in an Eagles uniform come September.
Kicker
Projected Starter: David Akers
Backups: None
Analysis: After K/P Sam Swank's release, Akers will have no competition come training camp. He remains the unchallenged starter.
Punter
Projected Starter: Sav Rocca
Backups: None
Analysis: Although former police officer Ken Parrish was brought in to the training camp roster, his 40.3 yd average punt should not be enough to oust Aussie punter Sav Rocca. Rocca will look to become more consistent with his punts this season, but Parrish should do no more than take the edge off Rocca's leg during preseason games.
Long Snapper
Projected Starter: Jon Dorenbos
Backups: None
Analysis: Since his acquisition by the Eagles in 2006, the 29-year-old Dorenbos has been an outstanding long snapper. No competing long snappers were brought in this year, and it is extremely unlikely that the Eagles will want to tinker with their three-man field goal unit, thus leaving Dorenbos as the starter.
Practice Squad
Projected fillers: G/C Dallas Reynolds, WR Brandon Gibson, FB Marcus Mailei, DT Jervonte Jackson, LB Moise Fokou, OG Paul Fanaika, S Reshard Langford, TE Eugene Bright

Klecko doesn’t ‘blow’ at playing DT. He’s not starting caliber by any stretch, but he’s a solid depth guy there. The fact they let him embarrass himself at FB makes me think he’s still on the team this year. Also the fact they were allegedly looking at Hollis Thomas makes thing they plan on going 4 DTs, and I think Klecko is the front runner for that spot.
If they go 4 DTs, I think Tupou gets redshirted or White loses his spot.
I will be completely shocked and pissed if Jack doesn’t make it.
Hobbs split time with Sheldon in camp. Not sure if that meant to fire up Sheldon, get Hobbs more exposure to the system, and/or they want Hobbs to be the nickle back. Hanson does have that new deal, but I don’t think that guarantees him the 3rd spot or anything for that matter. I think that battle is if nothing else, close.

No love for Amendola?
Not even on the practice squad?

Well you can only only stash so many guys, and he’s probably our 8th WR. And guys like Jackson, Maclin, and Gibson are real young. That might be the reason.

Yeah I figured we could only spare one, maybe two spots on the practice squad for a WR, especially since in this scenario we’re carrying 6 on our roster. Amendola is one of 11 WR’s and one of about 8 return man candidates (DJax, Maclin, Demps, Hobbs, Harris, Booker, Courtney Robinson, and Marcus Thigpen) It would be extremely hard to fit him in anywhere on this team.

Only 3 DTs seems unnecessarily risky on a roster with 6 WRs and 10 OL. I suppose they can always keep Hollis Thomas nearby in case of injury, assuming he’s good for 20-25 plays a game.

True, and I definitely think they’ll keep at least one DT on the practice squad in that situation.
