Ten Intriguing Storylines for Eagles Training Camp
In no particular order of importance, here are ten storylines to pay attention to before and during training camp:
1. The Health and Readiness of Brian Westbrook - As always, there are two sides to this story. The injury was reported to be more serious than the team is letting on, and as usual, the team is downplaying everything. The truth is, we won't know how fast B-West will recover until he actually suits up again. Obviously, we don't want him rushing back from injury, but we can't afford to be without him for too long. He's expected to miss the preseason, so camp is pretty much out; it'll be interesting to see how he'll ready himself in the meantime.
2. Donovan McNabb's Contract Situation - Lips are tight across the board on this issue, but I think the two sides will be able to hammer out a contract extension sometime before the start of the season; before camp would be terrific, because it would give Donovan peace of mind and allow him to go about his business without money matters festering in the back of his mind.
3. McCoy or Booker? - This will be a very interesting camp storyline. Lorenzo Booker has already staked his claim, publicly stating that he would readily fill Westbrook's shoes for as long as he is out, and that the job is his to lose. After all, what would you expect a veteran running back to say? No vet wants to go into camp and be beaten out for the job by a rookie. LeSean McCoy, however, has tremendous upside and is already listed as the backup on the team's unofficial depth chart. Hopefully that sprained thumb won't become a nagging injury for McCoy, because I'd love to see him wow everyone and make an immediate impact.
4. Who Starts at Free Safety - The quick answer is Quintin Demps, but I think we should reserve judgment and see how camp plays out. We didn't sign Sean Jones for no reason, after all. Jones is very hungry, and wants to prove that he can replace a legend like Dawk. Demps is hungry too, but it remains to be seen if he's matured since last season. The knock on him coming out of college was his cockiness, which I personally don't mind in a player as long as he can back it up. But that cheap shot on Kurt Warner caught everyone's eye, and don't think Andy wasn't thinking about that when he endeavored to sign Jones. At any rate, this should be one of the best position battles of the entire camp.
5. Number Three Receiver - Barring disaster, Kevin Curtis and DeSean Jackson should be the first and second receivers, respectively. The way I see it, there are three guys who will vye for that third spot: Hank Baskett, Jason Avant, and Jeremy Maclin. What is so interesting about this is that each guy brings a different strength to the field; Baskett has height, Avant has hands, and Maclin has speed. It all depends what Andy thinks he'd need most when throwing to the slot. I think the smart money is on Avant taking the spot, because he's really come along and as I've said before, he's become a very reliable third down pass-catcher. Baskett could be used more in a situational role, particularly the red zone, and Maclin could see a lot of return duty.
6. The Sheldon Brown Saga - Brown skipped a recent set of OTAs, but it was reportedly due to personal matters and not his contract. Whether that is true or not, who knows, but if Brown is smart, he'll show up for camp ready to rock. If he acts up, I'm sure Andy will have no problem replacing him with Joselio Hanson. The team didn't let him become a free agent because they saw value and talent. I'd love to keep Sheldon around because he's a heavy hitter, so we'll see how this plays out.
7. David Akers' Longevity - I raised an eyebrow when the team took Sam Swank, a kicker from Wake Forest, because I wondered if this was the year Akers finally had some competition. As it turned out, Swank's already been released, and once agin there is no one behind Akers. He had an up-and-down season last year, but it will be interesting to see how well he's recovered from his ugly performance against the Cardinals to close out the season. He's one of the Iron Men of the team, but can he still kick at an elite level, or even well enough to help his team win come playoff time?
8. The Brothers Andrews - The shake-up on the o-line was one of the top stories of the offseason, beginning with the signing of man-mountain Stacy Andrews, big bro to Shawn. The team subsequently added Jason Peters, and then decided to move Shawn out to tackle. This will prove to be one of the most momentous stories of training camp, as we will find out how well the line can adjust to the new system.
9. Short-Yardage Woes - The team finally has a genuine fullback in Leonard Weaver, who the team hopes can help convert in those pesky 3rd-and-short situations. This is a problem that should be fixed before anything else, and hopefully Weaver is the answer.
10. Ingram or Celek? - Obviously, the job is currently Celek's to lose, but Ingram has been impressing coaches early, even with his blocking, which was thought to be suspect at best coming out of college. His speed is expected to create mismatches with linebackers, as has been stated exhaustively. Will Ingram just push Celek in camp, or will he shine and make that starting spot his?
More Food For Thought:
Will Victor Abiamiri nab a starting spot?
How much will Kevin Kolb improve?
Does Trevor Laws push Patterson or Bunkley for a starting job?
Chris Clemons: will he live up to his contract?
Macho Harris: diamond in the rough?
More than a month to go now...lot to think about.

You pretty much nailed it
Westbrook should be OK. I really do think this year he will be used less sparingly and more as a decoy…. I think McCoy will get some reps and weaver will get some carries too. Westbrook has to stay fresh especially if we make it to the playoffs.
McNabb’s contract doesnt bother me.
Booker has a great attitude, it would not surprise me if he got some reps this year as well
Avant should win that #3 spot…I think Curtis will get rotated in and out. This probably is curtis’s last year.
Celek shoul dhave the starting job. It sounds like he’s been working hardcore on his blocking but I think Ingran will get some reps too. He’s super fast, athletic, and has never droppped a td pass in the end zone.
I hope Sheldon doesnt go down that road.
At this point — I think Jones starts. He had a pro bowl year 2 years ago. Not that he’s touted as a great safety — but I think he’ll make some plays for us.

Any news on that punter they picked up for camp? I heard he was turning heads as well during the OTA’s and stuff. Id love for someone to come in and challenge Rocca.

I haven’t heard much on him other than what you know, but Rocca could definitely use some competition to tighten up his game…he ain’t too young, either.
Tony Romo...why so serious?

It's getting good.
Hopefully Westy’s going to be okay. He’s a good athlete, and as a good athlete, he’ll strive to get back on the field through therapy as fast as he can. I’m fine with McCoy getting most of the snaps, though.
McNabb will get an extension. I think it’s a little overplayed, but if this were to happen next year, then it would be a concern. Talks about him leaving because of this argument this year? I doubt it.
McCoy. I see Booker verses Mendenhall to be the real issue here. It just depends on how much we either need a speed/catching back, or a power back.
My first instinct is that Sean Jones will win it, but to be honest, Johnson might switch between the two during plays this year. It’ll come down to who produces the most in the first few games of the season.
I would love for Maclin to win the job, but I’m not seeing Reid giving a rookie some playing time, other than McCoy and the RB situation, two years in a row. Avant has shown that he’s a reliable chain mover this past year, so I’m giving him the edge.
This is the storyline I really don’t want to talk about. To me, it’s going to get ugly. Hopefully this clears up.
The Great Wall of Philadelphia? Sign me up on the bandwagon.
The Weaver pick-up and the improved OL just saved thousands of televisions in Philadelphia from flying remotes on third and fourth downs.
Honestly? It’ll be a tie: I predict this year, these two will be interchangeable at TE, and both will see touches. I don’t think a clear-cut decision, if any, will be made until the end of the year.
Short answers for the Food part: Yes, can’t say but hopefully by a good margin, he’ll get in rotation time, same as last answer: he has some promise as well, and he’s my pick for the underdog this year.

Exciting
Just set up my account here and holding up the eagles fanbase in upstate NY
Training camp can’t come fast enough, this is definately the down time. Eeven though its hard for rookies to go out and contribute right away i have to believe that there will be a lot of 4 WR sets with 6 very capable WR. Also with both TE’s improving on blocking I feel like there will be a lot more 2 TE sets. Havent had a real productive TE since Chad Lewis was McNabb’s go to guy so having two solid guys could really help us out especially in the red zone. Also with Westbrook hurt and no proven backup i have to believe that Reid will continue his pass happy offense. I also wouldn’t mind seeing 5 or 6 db’s out there with all of the great players we have.
This team could be scary good!
That being said I cant wait to see them all out there.

We cut Swank & picked up a punter, Parrish
So get rid of #7
Not to mention Akers was coming off an injury, and also increased his leg srength, it just took him a while to get back his accuracy, but he was fine down the stretch, and should still be extremely productive

Shaky against the Cardinals
It was weird emotionally for me…I felt great about Akers all through the end of the season and playoffs, and then he laid a big ol’ egg in the NFC championship game. It didn’t cost us the game, apparently, but it was disquieting.
So he was fine down the stretch, except for the last game. Was that just a fluke? I’m going to say a very reserved yes.

trashbag elbow?
im at work so i really can’t look that up.
“tacopants” goes back to his days at michigan.
from mgoblog:
“Tacopants”? Tacopants is Jason Avant’s eleven-foot tall imaginary friend. Chad Henne spent much of 2005 hitting him between the numbers, which are unfortunately eight feet off the ground and made of dreams. Blessed with infinite eligibility and the ability to sneak on and off the field without alerting the referees — made of dreams, remember — Tacopants has taken a lesser role in the offense as Henne matures but still pops up at inopportune times.

so basically
avant has a great deal of experience snagging off target balls due to previous help from his friend, tacopants.

That’s funny, but Henne is my cousin, so I shouldn’t laugh too much.
I think Taco Pants has a sister named Camel Toe. :)

Good post
only disagreements is that Reggie Brown definitely has an opportunity to get that 3rd spot, of even take back the second spot currently held by curtis. Also, Trevor Laws will get rotated in, but will NEVER become a starter with Patterson and Bunkley ahead of him, those two are unbelievable, and Patterson is incredibly underrated.

I don’t know about Reggie Brown. I think Andy really values Avant as the slot guy. Brown will have to leapfrog him and beat out Curtis/Jackson if he wants a spot high up on the Depth Chart.
I’m really interested to see what Abiamiri has got. I was impressed by him last year until he got injured, and that LDE spot is certainly up for grabs. The battle at Safety will be good, but I see Abiamiri/Parker/possibly Clemons being just as good. And I have high hopes that Abiamiri can win the job and develop into a solid compliment to Cole on the other side.
I'm not ready to move on from #20.
by LeonSA on Jun 8, 2009 11:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Interested...
in what C. Clemons will bring to the table healthy and with another year under his belt in this system.
Hope he can return to his 2007 8 sack year.
If Clemons can pull 8 as a # 2 and Abiamiri can step it up that should take a lot of pressure off of Cole and he will throw up some monster numbers.

GOOD READ
1. WESTBROOK WILL NEED AS MANY WEEKS CONDITIONING AS HE WILL BE OUT WITH INJURY. IF HE SITS 6 WEEKS, HE WILL NEED ANOTHER 6 TO REGAIN THE CONDITIONING HE LOST.
2. I HEARD MCNABB WILL NOT GET AN EXTENSION BUT WILL GET A RAISE. NOT SURE IF I AGREE WITH THIS BECAUSE EVERYONE WILL WANT THAT KIND OD DEAL AND WILL BE BEATING DOWN BANNERS DOOR.
3. REGGIE BROWN WILL DEFINITLY COMPETE FOR THE NUMBER THREE WR.
4. CELEK CELEK CELEK

Gocong
Just joined this blog list love the eagles love to be apart of this blogging thing. With our team having four above avg. linebackers, wat do you guys think about putting Gocong at LDE on some packages, i love Gocong’s run stopping ability, but i prefer gaither when it comes to pass coverage. I think we should role Gocong into End in passing downs. let me know wat you guys think.
