Rankings... What 20 Eagles can we least afford to lose?
With Brian Westbrook's surgery last Wednesday, we get reminded how quickly a season can be altered by an injury. Today we'll take a look at the Eagles' roster and rank what would be the Top 20 most devastating injuries.
20) LeSean McCoy

Let's start with Westbrook's replacement. It's not really fair to put a rookie on this list, simply because he has yet to play a single snap in the NFL, but ask yourself this... With Westbrook already a big quesiton mark, if McCoy goes down with an injury, can you honestly say you're not completely freaking out? Personally, I'd like to see the Eagles sign a guy like Michael Pittman (nice yards per carry average in recent seasons, can catch, and most importantly... block). That would give McCoy the luxury of easing his way into the league rather than throwing him to the wolves Week 1 against a good Panthers D.
19) Quintin Demps
There's a debate on who will win a starting safety spot opposite Quintin Mikell this year... Quintin Demps or Sean Jones. Regardless of who wins that battle, it's quite clear that Quintin Demps is the longterm answer at FS on this defense. An injury to Demps would severely impede his growth as a talented, young player, and we need Demps on the field continuing to get better.
18) Leonard Weaver

A fullback makes this list? Really? Yeah, really. On this roster, we have 2 running backs that can pass block - Brian Westbrook and Leonard Weaver. Having a running back that can pick up the blitz is an extremely crucial piece to this offense. Seeing as Brian Westbrook hasn't played in all 16 games in a season since... um... ever... Leonard Weaver is really important to this offense.
17) Kevin Curtis

You know what? We really missed KC last year... and not just for the first 6 games of the season. He was hampered by a sports hernia injury the entire season. You know what a healthy Curtis averaged during the playoffs? 4 catches and 70.3 yards. We get production anywhere near that next year, and I'm extremely happy.
16) Brent Celek

You know who our backup TE is? Nope, not Cornelius Ingram. It's Matt Schobel. I think Cornelius Ingram is going to see plenty of action this season (much more than Schobel at least), but mainly in 2 TE sets, often split out in the slot to exposes mismatches against slower linebackers. However, if Celek gets hurt, make no mistake... Schobel will start. I expect big things from Celek this year. In our 3 playoff games last year, Celek had 19 catches, 151 yards, and 3 TDs. I'm excited to see what he can do as a starter for an entire season.
15) Stacy Andrews

Stacy Andrews is not only our starting RG, but he's also our backup RT should his brother either get hurt or need to take a few weeks off with some Prozac.
14) Todd Herremans

Pretty much the same situation as Stacy Andrews - except he's on the more important side of the line - He's not just the LG, he's the backup LT.
13) Sheldon Brown

Any other year, I'd have Sheldon Brown much higher, but the opposing receivers in the NFC East are complete garbage. We also have a ton of depth at CB, so losing Sheldon wouldn't be a complete disaster, but he's still a really talented player.
12) David Akers

Akers was 33 of 44 (82.5%) on field goals last year, which was actually his best year since 2004. However, he missed an easy FG and an extra point in the NFC Championship game, and definitely doesn't have the range that he once had. Eventually, it's going to be time to replace Akers, but as we saw in 2005 (see picture above), replacing kickers mid-season is never a good thing. Is the idea of having Mark Simoneau kicking extra points a scary thought? Yup. Then again, in fairness, having Mark Simoneau as our starting MLB might be just as scary.
10 and 11) Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley

Our 2005 and 2006 first round picks are what they are... They do a great job stuffing the run, but they could both improve on getting to the QB more consistantly. Trevor Laws looks like another run stuffer in the mold of these 2, so there is some depth, and although I like Klecko as a jack-of-all-trades guy, he's going to get manhandled in the run game if he has to see significant time. If either of these 2 guys gets hurt, it severely messes up our Bunkley/Patterson/Laws run-stuffing rotation, and I certainly don't miss the days of Tiki Barber running for 200 yards on us.
9) Quintin Mikell

With the loss of Dawkins, Qunitin Mikell is now more important to this team than ever. Mikell has been learning Jim Johnson's difficult-to-master scheme for 6 years now, and can play either FS or SS. Meanwhile, Qunitin Demps is entering his second year as a pro and Sean Jones is new to the team. Mikell's experience in this system is therefore irreplacable. In the Demps/Jones battle for a starting job, if Demps wins, Mikell will remain the SS. If Jones wins, Mikell will likely move to FS. That kind of verstility is impressive. He played at a very high level in 2008, earning 2nd Team All-Pro honors, and if we were to be left with 2 safeties (Demps and Jones) will 1 year combined in Johnson's defense, it could be trouble.

He's 22, he had an outstanding rookie season, and he needs to be out on the field getting better... and better... and better... and better. An injury isn't an option here.

Are there better players on this list ranked lower than Stewart Bradley? Yes. However, our complete lack of depth at linebacker is very concerning. I don't want to slight Bradley here by the way - In my opinion, he's a future star in this league. If Bradley goes down with an injury, we're left with Omar Gaither shouting out the defensive adjustments, and I'm definitely not very comfortable with that.

In another post here on BGN, we had a Cowboys fan claiming how overrated Asante Samuel is. After doing a little research, I found that there were only 5 Dallas Cowboys that have more career TD's than Asante Samuel. Yup, 5 - Barber, Williams, Witten, Crayton, and that touchdown scoring machine... here it comes... wait for it... Jon Kitna! That's it.
My point here isn't to make fun of the Cowboys - It's to point out how much of a playmaker Samuel is. 2008 was actually a down year for Asante, as he only had 4 regular season INT's - He had 6 in 2007 and 10 in 2006 with the Pats. However, we saw what a game-changer Samuel is in his playoff performances. He had an INT return for a TD against the Vikings and an INT return to the 1 vs the Giants. Those may have been the 2 most important plays of their 2 playoffs wins. We have incredible depth at CB, but nobody on our defense is anywhere near the playmaker that Asante Samuel is.

Despite being drafted back in 2004, Shawn Andrews has only played 3 full seasons in the NFL. He missed 15 games in his rookie year and 14 games in 2008. In those 3 full seasons he did compete, he made 2 Pro Bowls (2006 and 2007) and was the first alternate at G in 2005. In my own humble opinion, the absense of Andrews in the lineup last year was easily the BIGGEST reason for our short yardage woes. We're certainly used to Andrews not being in the lineup and have very capable replacements, but he is an extremely talented player and his loss is a very big deal. With Andrews possibly moving out to tackle this year, his importance to this team is even more great.
4) Jason Peters

We paid a hefty price (A 1, a 4, a 6, and $10 mil per season) for our newest LT. With the losses of Tra Thomas and likely Jon Runyan, my biggest fear coming into the season was how we were going to block the Giants with their rotation of Tuck, Umenyiora, Canty, Bernard, Kiwanuka, Cofield, Robbins, etc. I REALLY like Todd Herremans and think he's going to be a part of our starting lineup for a loooong time... But I like him as a guard. An injury to Peters would mean that Herremans would slide out to left tackle, and Nice Cole would fill that guard spot. Peters/Herremans protecting McNabb's blind side sounds a lot better than Herremans/Cole.
3) Trent Cole

The Eagles like to continually rotate their D-Linemen to keep them fresh into the 4th quarter. It is rare that any of our D-Linemen will see 60% of the snaps throughout a game... with the exception of Trent Cole, who NEVER comes off the field. He can rush the passer, he can stuff the run, he frees up other players when he gets double-teamed, he drops into coverage on zone blitzes, he blocks field goals, he does everything. Trent Cole is an outstanding DE in this league, and it would be an absolute disaster to this team if he went down - I think we kind of take Cole for granted a little, and if he got hurt we'd see how badly it would affect the entire defense.
2) Brian Westbrook

He's our best player. Period. As the Giants always say, "You always have to keep 22 eyes on #36." We saw a healthy Westbrook for almost an entire season in 2007, and what happened? 2,000+ yards from scrimmage. In 2008, he was hampered all season by various leg injuries, and it showed in his and the rest of the offense's performance. When healthy, he's an absolute mismatch nightmare that completely opens up the passing game... You want to shade him with a safety or corner? Good luck covering Jackson, Curtin, Maclin, Avant, Celek, and Co. with single coverage. You want to take your chances with a linebacker? Ask Antonio Pierce how that worked out for him. You want to bring in a nickel or dime package? Be prepared to get mauled by our O-Line (which averages 333.6 lbs. of beef per starter).

Like Westbrook, this certainly isn't uncharted territory either. We all know what happens when McNabb gets hurt for extended periods of time. McNabb is by far the most important player to this team. Without a healthy McNabb, we realistically have no shot.

Awesome post!
I’d have DJack at 6 but otherwise this is great. I loved the garbage wide receiver post too. New to this site and its great and bye dawk’s stuff is fantastic.

good stuff man
i always read you stuff on here. really in depth and points out a lot of stuff that people dont realize, myself included. you made a really good point about trent cole. he really is the only consistent pass rush threat we have, we get a lot of sacks but its not often that its just from a four man rush. without cole i dont really see anyone who i definitely think could get to the quaterback on any given play.

Biggest lost, McNabb
With not knowing much, or anything about Kolb, i think it would be safe to say that the Eagles passing game would decline without McNabb. Opposing D’s, not respecting Kolb would load the box-up and dare them to pass, hence trying to stop Westbrook.
Vice-versa, losing Westbrook, you would still have McNabb whereas D’s might playback a bit in respect, thus opening up lanes for Booker, McCoy or whoever. Philly’s run game presumably would take a stepback w/o Westbrook, but as a group, do enough to get the job done! Besides, Philly is a pass first O, an seemingly find way’s to incorporate the RB in the passing game, regardless of who it is!

Pass first Offense is right...
but which current Eagle has 401 catches and 3609 receiving yards for his career.
That’s right, Brian Westbrook. He is still our best passing threat. 90 catches in 2007 makes him the Eagles All-time leader in catches for a single season passing WR Irving Fryar’s 88 in 1996.

Another great post
Brian Westbrook, hands down would be the biggest loss. Without Westy, we have a way higher chance of losing. The Eagles have shown they can win games without Mcnabb. Jeff Garcia and AJ Feely did great jobs for the year they were starting. #36 is irreplaceable.

p.s
That Giants game when Mcnabb was sacked 12 times and us losing 16-3. Westbrook not playing that game was the other big reason that happened. First being Justice can’t block for shit.

I can see your point, w/o BW
Besides his rushing/receiving ability, his ability to pick up blitzes. And your right about Garcia and Feely, they were a combined 9-4 in McNabb’s absence! When i was thinking McNabb, i was merely thinking about the long term affect w/o him. Kolb being young, and thrusted into action, how would he do? IDK, perhaps a Cassel-like performance? Then again, it’s been proven you can win with average QB play (if thats the outcome)!
But, when i was thinking about BW, i was thinking short term (a couple games). Knowing Philly is a pass first O, they presumably wouldn’t miss a beat in the passing game, at the same time, having enough of a patchwork running game until BW returned! Long term, teams could easily game plan w/o worrying about him period, because of what he can do.
At this point, IMO, i think it’s the amount of time each player might be out, seems tricky!

The only thing I disagree with is about Bradley. Not really his place on the list, but about his replacement. I don’t think too many people would be shitting their pants if Joe Mays came in place of Bradley for a couple games (I seriously doubt Gaither would be the replacement at MLB). I know it was just the preseason, but Mays looked like a ball hawk during those games last year.
by BreckBirds20 on Jun 7, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nah, It'd be Gaither
(I seriously doubt Gaither would be the replacement at MLB)
When he had the chance to start there a few years back he was pretty decent, and thats a very good thing to be able to say about your 2nd stringer. He’s vocal and he can make adjustments. The reason he got benched last season was because Bradley is a better MLB and we already have a bigger OLB in Gocong. Gaither just didn’t seem fast enough to keep up with TEs in man coverage and lost his job to the quicker (albeit smaller) Akeem Jordan.
All that being said, Gaither has a size and experience advantage over Joe Mays. I’m completely comfortable with him being Bradley’s backup. (Not that I ever want this scenario to see the field)
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

my 20
1. Trent Cole-he has a great motor. even though we have a lot of depth he carries an attitude with him that carries throughout the defense.
2. Donovan McNabb-Kevin Kolb will be a great quarterback but he isn’t ready for the nfc east yet
3. Brian Westbrook-He does everything. Young guys behind
4. Jason Peters-who else can play left tackle like him on this team?in the league?
5. Stewart Bradley-Joe Mays looked good last year but that isn’t enough to prove he is ready to be the signal caller/middle linebacker for the eagles this early.
6. Leonard Weaver- the problem with our short yardage running last year was that klecko wasn’t even out of his stance by the time westbrook was being tackled at the LOS
7. Desean Jackson-him and Avant tend to be the only guys on the roster who have the balls to catch a tough ball over the middle. Did I mention he returns punts and is a td threat every play.
8. Todd Herremans-very versatile lineman
9. Quintin Mikell- First Team All-Pro Safety this upcoming year guaranteed
10. Asante Samuel- beast/ball hawk/turnovers
11.Shawn Andrews-can’t lose him again
12. Sheldon Brown- corner who can hit…love it
13. Brodrick Bunkley-Run Stuffer who brings energy
14. Akeem Jordan- i like his athletic ability as a backer
15. Victor Abiamiri- i think he will be a big part of this team this year. hopefully he starts
16. Quintin Demps- special teams abiltity is a great asset to this team. plus safety
17. David Akers- great kicker.
18. Sav Rocca- field position is key
19. Lesean McCoy- could start opening day
20. Mike Patterson- Run Stuffer

i agree
we have good enough depth that it wouldn’t be that bad of a loss
maybe the question is who would play tackle because shawn is supposed to move out.
justice? ew.
or maybe also the fact that he can’t miss too many more games
because its getting on everyones nerves

Three Consecutive Pro Bowls
2000, 2001, & 2002 Chad Lewis made the Pro Bowl beginning a chain of five consecutive playoff appearances He was a beast and McNabb carried the Eagles on his legs and Chad Lewis’ hands. No WR to speak of although i loved having Antonio Freeman here in 02. Point is when Lewis controlled the middle of the field we moved the chains and scored points when it mattered. We got a glimpse of that with Celek in the playoffs but if we could get consistant performance from our TE’s not to mention our great receiving core we are going to be hard to defend and fun to watch.

I think we could afford to lose...
any wide reciever, or dback because of the depth. I even like our O-Line depth. I think Stewart Bradley would scare me because I think that he is much better than any replacement. Sheldon Brown might not even be starting by the end of the season. I think TE would hurt bad, along with RBs.
The real way to judge is look at the backups at each position, whichever one had the biggest drop off from starter to back up were in trouble. Celek to Schobel is significant, Westbrook to anyone (for now), Bradley to Mays or Gaither, Weaver to Eckle, are all big drop offs.
WRs -Djax to Curtis, Curtis to Maclin, Maclin to Avant to Baskett to Reggie to Gibson, not too bad of a drop off

McNabb to Kolb....
who knows, McNabb could go down and Kolb could take us to Super Bowl. We trade Mcnabb for a 1st round pick and change, Kolb goes on to be the next Tom Brady and leads us to SB year after year. We don’t have to rework McN contract, get picks for him, and a better, clutch, and winning QB takes his place. Its improbable but not impossible. We’d never know if Kolb doesn’t get a chance.

To be honest..
I voted for McNabb but you cant say which one would really be the bigger loss because we have no clue at all how McCoy or Kolb would handle the role of starter. I have to vote for McNabb though because he is a great leader in the locker room and he’s a pretty classy guy. He’s deffinently the face of the organization.

I still believe RBs are a dime a dozen in the NFL. Unfortunately for the Eagles the offense is complex for a RB and they are asked to do a lot so transition can be a little tougher.
Demps is the starting FS if Sean Jones beats him out in camp he will be the starting FS, Mikell will remain the SS no matter what happens at FS. Jones has the ball hawking ability to be a very good FS.
I agree we really did miss KC last year he will be an important part of this offense and the grooming of Jackson and Maclin.
Brent Celek get’s no play and after the way he finished last season emerging past LJ I can’t figure out what people don’t like. He works hard, has only improved, and is a baller.
We lose anyone on the line and I’m worried, I think Herremans could be a starting LT on most teams in the NFL so moving him out wouldn’t bother me as much as filling his spot at LG would. that said I don’t even want to think about injuries or mental demons.
Sheldon Brown is the best technical corner on this team, he goes down it’s big shoes to fill. I think that Joselio Hanson has the ability to fill those shoes he’s just a different type of player than Sheldon.
If Zont goes down we lose a playmaker, and potential points on the board. Anytime a pass goes his way it could be 6 for the Eagles and to lose that on Defense could hurt. That said we do have Jack Iguana waiting in the wings and a very good back in Hanson (assuming Sheldons still on the other side of the field).
Losing anyone on the Defensive line is just as bad as the offensive line. We happen to have 3 DTs that could start but as much as I loved Klecko in there at the beginning of the year I agree I’d be weary of him there full-time. Trent Cole well I’m not even thinking about that, you can’t hurt Jesus.
2) Brian Westbrook
Duh!
1) Donovan McNabb
I feel like you could have just put 1) You Know … and if anyone didn’t know they should be shipped off to Canada.
I don’t hate on Kolb as much as everyone else I’ve seen other starting QBs have bad starts to their career (Aaron Rogers, Peyton Manning … et al.) The truth is you don’t really know about a guy until the team is his. I think he is capable of being a very good QB in this league and I was impressed with his pocket movement and decision making last year in training camp. That said, this team would suffer if McNabb went down.

if Mcnabb goes down
and kolb brings us to the super bowl and we win I say we def trade Mcnabb, Kolb would have earned his starting QB spot which was part of the plan all along. I’m not trying to hate on McNabb, I think he’s top three QBs in the league, but if Kolb wins the spot you think Dmac will ride the pine? We drafted Kolb to be the future replacement. Why not get something for Donnie when he leaves. You would turn down two firsts and a second?
O wait, your right, Donovan will play in the NFL forever.

Love Trent Cole, but...
Trent Cole is a great player, but there are at least 5 more players I would rank over him. While Trent stays on the field a lot, this is a team that has never done well with a 4-man rush, and that includes last season. The Eagles blitz to create pressure in a more or less gambling proposition, and that’s what they will continue to do. I wish Cole was the guy you claimed he was, but he rarely demands a double team, and when teams run directly at him, he is very unsuccessful in stopping the run.
Great post overall though! I’m just expressing my difference of opinion. Keep it up!

Agree with McNabb...
I gotta say McNabb over Westbrook because if McNabb is out for a significant period of time I think Westbrook would probably be hurt not long after because he would bare too much of the burden…
Also I think Akers is too high…it would suck for the game he was hurt in but after that we would pick up a FA Kicker and not miss him too much…

My List (Before Reading Post)
Great post! A new angle on ‘best’ players for Eagles. I wanted to put together my list first.
1) McNabb, 2) Westbrook, 3) T.Cole, 4) Peters, 5) D.Jackson 6) Samuel
Top six Eagles, Shawn does not play a premium position and we’ve played without him.
7) Bradley, 8) Bunkley, 9) Mikell, 10) ShawnA, 11) S.Brown, 12) Herremans, 13) Patterson, 14) Curtis, 15) Weaver
Probably the next tier of quality players. Last 5 are more positional depth issues.
16) Celek, 17) Akers, 18) Gocong, 19) Avant, 20) McCoy
Other Valuable Depth Guys: Gaither, Ingram (please no Schobel)
By the way. My first post. I have been reading for over a year but finally signed up! Great site!

I think Westy is what spawned this post.
With Brian Westbrook’s surgery last Wednesday, we get reminded how quickly a season can be altered by an injury. That is why he is on it, plus he is expected to be back by week 1.

I still think Asante is OVERRATED.......

Hes got 4 regular season touchdowns
thats 1 every 1.5 seasons thats good but dynamic and game changing i dont think so….. Hes had one great year and 5 average years…… he’s only deserved 1 probowl but he like peters gets it due to his name.
And hes got 4 regular season touchdowns……. nobody counts playoff stats with regular season stats…….
so say his 4 touchdowns
You want to know whos got more than 4 touchdowns on the Cowboys?…..

Aren’t the playoffs kind of important?
by Bye, Dawk :( on Jun 12, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Remember: Cowboys don’t know what a playoff game is like. Or as least how to win one.

OK, no problem...
You just gave me a MUCH, MUCH more embarrassing argument…
How many Cowboys have more postseason TDs than Asante Samuel?
Ready?
No, wait… Ready…
Here it comes…
0.
Ooooouuuuuccccccchhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

The playoffs are important... and winning them is just a step to winning a superbowl... something the eagles havent done.

Asante has a ring, two actually. Asante has won, not one, but multiple playoff games. How many current Cowboys players can say the same?
by FredEx on Jun 12, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
None...... But Asante has done that with another team....
Not with the Eagles….. Hes a good player who played on a great “GREAT” team in New England and a great defense and in philly a not ’GREAT" team hes just average…… Thats all im saying im not knocking the dude hes just overrated.

how is saying someone is overrated not knocking them?
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Those Stats are wrong......
FYI………. He had 24 PD in 2005 so if you got those at nfl.com maybe you need to send them a email to get them fixed or something or go to a different site…. because in 2005 he had 10 int and 24 pd…… so im not blaming you caz NFL.com is wrong not you.
