Lesean McCoy Agrees to Deal
Because of the nearing of Training Camp, the Eagles needed to sign all of their draft picks before the start of the camp, and entered today with all but two of them under contract. But now there remains only one player left unsigned--WR Jeremy Maclin--as the team was able to work out a 4-year deal with 2nd-round selection LeSean McCoy today.
The details of the contractual agreement have not been disclosed, but all that matters to the fans and the staff is that McCoy (see picture) is locked up. He finished off a 2 year career at Pittsburgh University last season, and amassed a total of 3,365 yards from scrimmage and 36 touchdowns. Ranked as one of the top runningbacks going into the Draft, McCoy was taken with the 53rd overall pick by the Eagles, and compared well to starter Brian Westbrook while practicing in mini-camps. He is undoubtedly going to be a key player in the offense, whether that is this season, future seasons, or both.
General manager Tom Heckert released a brief statement regarding McCoy's unique athletic ability and how he will most definitely bring a lot to the Eagles:
"I think he can do the same types of things that Brian can do," "We think he's
an all-around player and we think he can step right in and help us out. He's a
great receiver out of the backfield. You can spread him out and he can also run
the ball in between the tackles. It's not fair to him to say he's just a 'change
of pace guy', that he's not a full-time player. He's proven that he can be
durable enough to carry the football in major competition."
Bob Kent of www.philadelphiaeagles.com wrote this about McCoy in a recent article:
"The 5-foot-10, 198-pound McCoy ran with the second-team offense during the
post-draft mini-camp and seemed to be in the right place at the right time. He
showed good quickness and caught the ball very well while absorbing as much as
he could from Westbrook. With Westbrook recovering from ankle surgery, McCoy
figures to see plenty of work in training camp and in the preseason."
With LeSean, also known as "Shady" to his teammates, secured into the organization, the Eagles can take a small sigh of relief, for they now have more guaranteed depth behind the injured Westbrook. The 21-year-old's signing may not have made the front headlines in the sports world, but it is surely a big story in Philadelphia.
