Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Help please.. I have jersey problems.

While I have bad mouthed the state once or twice (who hasn't)... this post, which is also my first, has nothing to do with that.  My problems concern picking a jersey.. mainly which player should I support, who's number should I wear.  Please read my woes after the jump, and help.

Star-divide

I will admit that I was quick to request a TO jersey for Christmas one year, only to have it turn sour well before any left over fruit cake.  I went without updating for a while, supported the team with other wearables (hats).. and a loud voice while watching games.  Just before last season, when I was back in Philly for my cousin's wedding (I'm from Philly, but currently living in Florida), I decided to take the plunge.. many numbers were available, and #5 was everywhere for cheap... but my relatives assured me that everyone in the city was certain he'd be out soon... and I did not want to be stuck with 2 jersey's of ex-Eagles.  So my wife got her Westie jersey (only one she could find, lucky).. and to not be matching, I went with the guy that I will always view as a true Eagle for life, and grabbed myself a number 20.  I'm sure you saw that coming a few sentences ago... unfortunately I require glasses so my foresight last summer is much incredibly worse than your hindsight.

If Brian Dawkins had left by retiring an Eagle, I would wear the jersey til the midnight green was a throw-back look and then continue until it could continue no more.  Here I stand.. with Dawks still playing, but in Denver and me wanting something else... until (fingers crossed) Brian comes back for his last season then retires his number with our team.

As for new jerseys... my choices still include 5 & 36.  The new 2 year deal Donovan McNabb signed does make that #5 more appealing then it was last year.  Also, I think I would be alright with matching my wife's 36, but with my luck of picking 'soon-to-be-ex-Eagles'... and Brian Westbrook's current injury situation, I feel I should stay away.. he doesn't need my help.  I'm currently leaning towards others such as 10 or 22.  DeSean Jackson is running hot, and since he's new, in theory he will be around long enough to break my jersey to season record of 1 and done. As for Samuel, I'm a UCF grad, and I got to see him in action before he went pro.  Wearing his number would support both my college and professional teams.

Maybe I should just get a Cunningham or something older?  I'm open to other suggestions.

Just got a DeSean Jackson jersey myself. He is a young guy and should be around for a while, if not his entire career.

If you are only buying one jersey and don’t want it to go out of style, get a throwback.

That’s why I’m thinking throwback. No bad luck.

I have an Asante Jersey now, and if Bradley or Abiamiri sign long term contracts I’m going to jump on that with a quickness.

DJax is a great choice too. If I were to go Offense it would be Shawn Andrews all day.
Personally I’m thinking Defense all the time.

I think your bigger problem is having your cat as your profile pick (haha, just kidding).

Anyway, I’m with you on trying to find a jersey for the longterm… Not for the money aspect… It’s more of thing where I just like to have a worn, beat-up jersey after a few years of use. I’m also in the process of looking for a new jersey as well. I have to replace my Dawkins jersey, which I’ve had for like 10 years, and is beat to shit.

Here are my thoughts…

5, 36, 10 – I’d shy away from those for a few reasons… First off, don’t be like everyone else. You know how many 5’s and 36’s and soon to be 10’s are in the crowd already? Be unique. Also, McNabb is 32 years old, and Westbrook will be 30 when the season begins. You won’t get the longevity.

22 – Here’s a good choice. He’ll be with the team for a while, and you have a back story on why you picked 22 (the college thing).

Throwback – No. Lame. If you’ve had the Cunningham jersey since 1990… Great. That’s awesome. If you buy it in 2009, weak.

Personally, I’m a defense guy…

- I strongly considered Mikell (NOBODY has a Mikell jersey), but he’s getting up there in years.

- I also gave consideration to Cole, but I do this thing in the parking lot of tailgates where I interrupt 2 people playing catch by intercepting their pass and running really far away with their ball, and then do an elaborate touchdown dance (and it just wouldn’t look right with a Cole jersey). It usually goes over really well with people not even involved in the situation, too.

- Sheldon Brown was also a possibility until he became a whiny bitch.

- And finally, I decided on Stew Bradley. Like your Asante Samuel college connection, I have a backstory with Bradley – Bradley happens to be my middle name, so I thought it would be funny (Insert middle name joke here). Plus, Bradley happens to be a beast, and is likely to be an Eagle for a loooooong time. The only drawback I see here is that any time I see a white guy with a white player jersey, I subconsciously think… “Racist.” I’m a white guy, so I hope people don’t think I’m a racist with my Bradley selection.

Everyone will get Desean’s or Westy-#5-Asante I hate having the same jersey everyone is getting. of course some1 is bound to have a Stew but not the mojority.

My worst luck jersey was a black Stallworth….that my wife surprised me with 1 day before he signed with the Patriots.

I could get a nameplate and make it a Maclin, but it’s a pretty cheap-o jersey so probably not worth it.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Talk about an epic failure

Both Bobby Hoying as a QB and for selecting his jersey. If you were a season ticket holder, I think I saw you wearing that Hoying jersey in the Vet parking lot. What do you do with a jersey like that?

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on Jun 23, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I have a plan for #20 jersey

Buddy of mine is going down to Clemson for Clemson’s hall of fame game and Dawkins is getting inducted into their HoF. I’m going to try and get my Dawkins jersey signed and then frame it. If Dawkins makes it into the NFL HoF (and he should), I’m taking the same jersey to Canton to try and get it signed again.

I had bad luck on my jerseys as well. For novelty’s sake, I got a McMahan jersey seeing as how we had the same last name. Then he played. Now it sits in my closet…

I too need to think about a new jersey and I’ve been thinking one of the DT’s, like Bunk.

by JimmyK on Jun 22, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

same problem here

I bought a lito sheppard jersey cause I wanted something different, and I had gotten McNabb as a gift anyways. I still have my TO jersey but I can’t seem to find those Avant nameplate sew-overs anymore.

I think we’ll extend Stew Bradley so I agree w/ most people here. I see Bradley being here for 10+ years and he could very well sign that extension in the next month or two if you want to wait a little. He’ll be like our Ray Lewis.

Right now I’m debating between Peters, Shawn Andrews, and Gocong. They’re all young guys so I should get a good 5+ years out of it. Peters is nasty but I haven’t bonded with him yet, Andrews is really cool but I gotta make sure he’s not going to retire at any given moment, and Gocong would be sweet cause people would be like no way you have a Gocong jersey wtf.

I may never get a jersey again.

I’ve never owned an Eagles Jersey, but I’ve got 4 Denver Nugget jerseys.
My first: Dikembe Mutombo – left free agency
Second: LaPhonso Ellis – left free agency
Third: Antonio McDyess – Traded (Twice)
Fourth: Marcus Camby – traded for cash.

If I were ever to get an Eagles jersey, it’d have to be one belonging to a player who meant something to me and will continue to do so.
I’d have to go with Harold Charmichael, Wilbert Montgomery or Andre Waters; Keith Byars and Keith Jackson might even be in the running and Jerome Brown almost goes without saying. Brian Dawkins will be ok once he retires and probably Donovan McNabb too, but I’m kind of on the fence there.

by cavortingEagle on Jun 22, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Camby, Ellis, McDyess, and Mutombo?

You got a 6’8 and over requirement? You might have to go with King Dunlap.

defense has the intimidation factor that everyone should want!
I also have a dawkins and will always love it……..also when we got Spikes i was thrilled he was my fav. nfl lb and then one day he was on our defense i couldnt pass up the opportunity.
That being said I would look for a Trent Cole Jersey maybe a Demps jersey if you expect big things like I do. A jersey needs attitude and intimidation, Cole and Demps have a good deal of that

Some of you have heard this before....

I bought a TO jersey back in the day. I jumped all over that bandwagon, and when he started pulling his usual garbage, i stuffed it into the back of my closet. Then, we signed a new 81 and i was pretty stoked. My dad works for the sales team that sells the NFL their jerseys. My jersey was a true “Authentic” jersey; not one you can buy from the mall. I sent it back to the factory where they happily removed OWENS and replaced it with the then rookie AVANT! I still think i am the only one with a legit Avant jersey….not just duck taped over Owens!!

I’ve got 2 McNabbs, 2 Westbrooks, a Dawkins, and a Black Stallworth (which, luckily, I think is one of the cheap Walmart jerseys)

White McNabb was the first jersey I ever bought. Got it in ’99 before attending the Eagles-Giants game.

Green McNabb was a gift from my best friend for being in his wedding.

My wife got me a black Stallworth jersey for (I think) Valentine’s day. Good thought, but he signed with the Pats shortly after and I only wore it once.

I got the 75th anniversary blue and yellow Westbrook jersey after attending the game where they wore them. I didn’t want any more McNabb jerseys, since he seemed like he might not be the best long-term option, and Dawk didn’t play.

Wife got me the Green Westbrook for Xmas.

I got a “Replethentic” (nicer than my other jerseys) Dawk jersey at half price. Sure, I only got 1 year out of it, but when he retires, I’ll wear it to games again.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

The nice thing about a Dawkins jersey

is that in a few years it will be the same as wearing a Reggie White jersey now. If you have an authentic in good condition, you’d be an idiot to get rid of it

by 700 Level on Jun 23, 2009 8:46 AM EDT reply actions

Or bad condition… The best jerseys, in my opinion, are the ones that are battle tested… They’ve seen big wins, big losses, blackouts, vomit, etc… I have to figure out what to do with my Dawkins jersey. My fiancee bought me sock monkey slippers that I wore throughout the entire Phillies run last year, and I immediately retired them. They’re going into a glass frame and up onto a wall in the basement. I might have to put up the BDawk jersey with it.

I have Dawkins and Stallworth (should have thought that one out). If I were to buy an Eagles jersey today it would be Trent Cole.

I was reading this site with a certain amount of empathy. Spending big money on a Jersey, there is a need to get the right one. You want a guy that is good, young and will be on your team a while.
My girlfriend just walk in and ask me what going on. i told her the delima and she said “you mean to tell me you spent a 140+ posts on what to wear to a football game, What are you a bunch of pussies? Is their going to a future post on what shoes to wear to a game.” Of course I am embarrassed but quickly recovered and told her it was a Philadelphia thing.

Thanks for all the comments and help

Wanted to say thanks. Your comments were fun to read..

While I haven’t come to an official decision, I am gonna close this poll. If anyone wonders why I voted for Westie… it’s not because that’s what I’m getting, but because he only had 4 votes, and I needed to vote somewhere to not have to constantly click on “view results”… so I gave him some love.

My decision will probably fall btwn D-Jax & Sammy, but I must give honorable mention to #55. I didn’t have Stew on the poll, but those that mentioned him gave great points and he ranked a close 3rd…

And now I’m left to myself to decide before the season starts.. do I go with the Alma Mater link I have to Asante… or the potential longevity of an Eagles career for DeSean.

So, since I’m bad at remembering details.. does anyone know the current remaining contract time of these 2?
