Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

The worst offseason this year?

WITHOUT a doubt in my mind has to be the Denver Broncos. They went from an 8-8 team to a 4-5 win team and the only reason why they get that many wins is because of their weak division.

Let's review"

1. Got rid of their franchise QB

2. Drafted a RB @ #12 when there are 8 other RBs on the roster... Oh and that defense wasn't exactly ranked #1 either

3. Speaking of the defense it sucked, so they switch to a 3-4 defense.... Without the personnel to do so!!!

4. Over paid the HELL out of Dawkins. Sorry Brian, but your days of flying all over the field are over. Without much talent around Dawkins he's going to have some problems. He's never played in a 3-4 either.

5. Last but not least, they have a diva at WR (Brandon Marshall). I think almost every franchise in the NFL has suffered through having a diva on a team. They are lucky they drafted perhaps the best WR in last years draft class Eddie Royal. As amazing as Jackson was, Royal was just as impressive.

Which brings me to my next point. Every Billichick protege has been a complete bust in the NFL

1. Eric Mangini - Didn't do much with the Jets

2. Romeo Crennel - Tanked with the Broncos

3. Charlie Weiss - ND hasn't been exactly great since his time as a head coach.

4. Nick Saban - Enough said!

5. Josh McDaniels - While it's just a belief for NOW, I truely believe this guy will stink it up a mile high (pun intended).

With Belichick's underlings doing so bad it makes you wonder how much of a football genius Belichick really is.

It is an interesting question about NE

I thought the same thing when Weiss and Crennel were clearly not good as head coaches. They are doing something right up there. If it isn’t the coaching staff, what is it? Stellar personnel team? Belicheck running everything so that assistants really don’t impact the outcome? Cheating?

Regarding Denver, it is hard to disagree. They have been a trainwreck. If Marshall leaves, they will be hosed completely in 09. Dawkins was the only good thing that happened to that team but they did not pool their investments wisely. To make the decision to overpay him he should have been the final piece with other good pieces already in place.

I think Belicheck is a supreme leader and his coaches are more puppets so when on there own don’t turn out so well.

I knew somone on here could get past their hatred of bellichick and see the genius he is….i still dont like him but IMHO hes the best coach ever to guide a team …period. As for why the pats are so good ive been told by several friends of mine who are close with teddy bruschi and vrabel that those 2 say its their conditioning program that makes the team so damn good becuase thay can outlast almost all thair opponents.

I think most unbias’d people on this board can honestly admnit that Belichick is a really good head coach, but it doesnt mean we have to like him or look past his spygate b.s. The same way i think most can admit the quality wr that T.O. is, but it doesnt mean we can’t hate every breathe he takes.

this post

reminded me how much I hate the Gaytriots.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the Chiefs do better than the Broncos this year. If I had to take someone from Belicheck’s system I’d take Pioli over McDaniels simply based on the fact that Piolo is a personnel man, and I think this will be evident in Denver this year with their struggles.

of course none of this matters considering the team we’re rolling out this year. GO BIRDS!

the rep party is not falling apart

the democratic party is screwing everything up right now the rep party doesn’t want to be involved.
even some democratcs in congress are regretting pelosi & obama, if obama had his was the deficit would be twice as high, & now is talking about raising taxes in the future, who would have guessed that was coming with democrats,(sarcasm) & pelosi is just being a dumb bitch

you should have said the economy, would of made a lot more sense & been a lot funnier.the rep party lost power, but only for 4 years when the uninformed american public turn against obama because the economy didn’t recover by that point, but since they have no idea about economics, the rep party will feed them useless info and win the presidency, like the dem media did with buh & palin to get obama the victory, it’s how politics works & why we need tests before you can vote, like the citizenship test (test people have to take for their american citizenship)

whoa

sorry man…didn’t mean to offend anyone. However, I will point out that although I voted for McCain, it is pretty obvious that the republicans are in at least mild disarray. And you might be right…they’re not falling apart, they fell apart during the 2008 election. Which is fine, because it is a cyclical thing…the democrats fell apart in time for the 2004 election and got their asses handed to them. I’m sure the republicans will eventually figure out how to appeal to more people again.

As for your comment that I should have said the economy…well, I’m sorry that I didn’t make you laugh, but that doesn’t make sense either…maybe a few months ago it would, but the economy has recently showed signs that things might actually be improving. So, again…the economy fell apart, but now it’s getting better (slowly)…cyclic deal.

But in reality, I don’t really want to talk about politics here…I just typed the first analogy that came to my mind, and after reading the news for about 5 hours a day at work, politics were on the mind. Sorry to offend you. But…I still thought it was clever

If this season turns out to be a total shit sandwich for the Broncos, is it possible that Dawkins retires after this season?

It might be tough to fairly judge Josh McDaniels as a coach from how shitty the team is being run from a personnel standpoint.

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on Jun 17, 2009 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

totally agree about the broncos

has there ever been a coach that has come into a team the torn it apart as fast as McDaniels has with the broncos. I mean is they are the worst team in the league next year what is he going to say “Looks like I was doing this wrong all along”

Let's get it.

by homestar2281 on Jun 18, 2009 4:41 AM EDT reply actions

It really looks like

the Broncos are gonna suck this year right?

But I really don’t know how you can say that before they start a game. What the Broncos did last season was just about as big a choke job as the Bucs in the NFC. They merely had to win one game to get into the playoffs and they couldn’t do that.

Im not gonna say that he was smart to trade Cutler or now they should get rid of Marshall too.

As for the draft and the RB’s, they really don’t have one even close to Moreno. Plus the Patriots offense last year run by McDaniels used at least 3 RB’s per game, so I don’t know where you getting that being a bad move.

Give it time. I mean EVERYONE thinks this is gonna fail, aside from some insane Bronco fans. You really can’t say anything one way cuz it could work out.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 18, 2009 7:50 AM EDT reply actions

the broncos are the bears last year

with no defense & if marshall stays, an actual receiver

by sports00fan00 on Jun 18, 2009 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

How do you know Moreno is better?

Than the rest of their RBs?

Last year they reminded me of the colts in the early 2000s where they had to put up 30 points to win a game. This COULD work and I might ending up looking silly, but I just can’t see it… Not even a little bit. The Raiders might be better than them this year…and that’s saying something.

eddie royal had a better rookie season than desean

but desean was far and away the 2nd best, and no one was even close

by Manoovi on Jun 18, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they had equal success …

91 Rec 980 Yards 65.3 YPG 10.8AVG 5TDs
62 Rec 912 Yards 57.0 YPG 14.7AVG 2TDs

That’s pretty comparable considering Royal had 29 more receptions, you are right though after the two of them no one comes close (save maybe for Donnie Avery who had a very good Rookie year as well)

I don't know for certain

But i would say they were utilized differently. By the looks of their averages, Royal seemingly did alot of the underneath stuff. Whereas DJax was more down the field. Though i’m sure DJax could turn something short for a major gain too!

by Hootman on Jun 19, 2009 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

The biggest thing

Is Royal had the pleasure of taking on the #2 cb and no double coverage cause of Marshall.

Royal didnt have Marshall for the first 3 weeks of the season. His first game he blew up for 146 and a td.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by greenbean#twoOH on Jun 19, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true, although he did have the pleasure of being covered by Hall in the game. And then in those next two games he had less than 50 yards combined.

by FredEx on Jun 19, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

he was obviously the best wr on the field…not switchin hall off him was their fault.

Cutler had great games those first three, and the second was really good. So i dont know why he didnt have better stats those two games, would have to ask a broncos fan. It would seem he was good enough to open up the rest of the offense if he was on the field because if he was being blanketed (speculation).

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by greenbean#twoOH on Jun 19, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Raiders definitely made a mistake by not switching coverage. But he was still getting 2nd WR treatment, even in the 2nd half for whatever reason. So that combined with his two low yardage outputs doesn’t really get rid of the 2nd WR therefore less coverage attention angle. Either way, Royal had a great year, and was better statistically than Jackson, I don’t want to take that away from him.

by FredEx on Jun 19, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s why im sayin after week 1 he got top WR treatment while Marshall was still out. He runs short crossing routes and is not a deep threat so he only amounted 37yds in week 2, but still had a touchdown against a pretty good secondary. Week 3 i dont know how he didnt torch new orleans, but either way Cutler still had good games. So what im sayin is he got top wr treatment for those two weeks and it opened up the rest of the passing game. I dont watch Bronco’s games, so i dont know for sure, im just speculating. I just don’t by into the second corner theory.

He def. had better numbers per se, but im not tryiin to say either one is better. Royal had 29 more receptions and 68 more yards in one less game then Djax. I would say Djax is better, that might be my green bias, but either way he had better numbers. I think they’re both obviously very good and it will be nice to compare their careers.

Djax doesn’t drop the ball in Dallas and catches the td in Wash. then he’s over 1000yds w/ 4 tds. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

That makes a lot of sense for those games, but then that still only 2 games out of the whole season he would have been getting that extra attention. Either way, doesn’t really matter, he made the most his own situation and did very well, as did DeSean. If you’re comparing the two one year out of a whole eventual career isn’t a big deal anyway.

Also, I’m very surprised to look up and see this didn’t start as a what happens if Marshall leaves the Broncos thing.

by FredEx on Jun 19, 2009 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

hahaha…yah it started about rookie wr’s, and then the comment bout royal gettin 2nd cb coverage. which i think is a weak argument.

Man, if he wasn’t such a fucktard off the field, it would be bad ass to see him in an Eagles jersey. Asomugha said he was the toughest guy to bring down. You could basically clear out curtis, brown, and baskett if there was a chance in hell we would trade for BM. I know its not gonna happen, but its nice to dream of a maddenesque wr corps.

How do i teeach these keeeeds

Whatever, the patriots are savvy! Lets just listen to ESPiN commentators discuss how it wasnt a big deal.

But i digress, I looked back on that draft and I did want DeSean, but I also wanted Mario Manningham….ugh. I guess we aren’t GM’s for a reason.

The broncos however, they may or may not be toasted, it all depends if Josh “Googly Eyes” McDaniels can get Orton to play like Matt Cassel did last year. But if they lose Brandon Marshall as well, then it makes it just that much more diffficult. Also, how dare they take Moreno and totally destroy his fantasy value!
