Top 99 players for '09
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9665338/NFL's-top-99-player-rankings-for-'09
FoxSports.com's Peter Schrager posted a list of the what should be the top 99 players of '09. I posted the Eagles plaers after the jump but you should check the list to kill some time. I dont agree with some of the rankings like Eli Manning ahead of Mcnabb or Calvin Johnson ranked at 83, but thats just me. Also Im not sure how the addition of Jeremy Maclin is supposed to help Westbrook this season, but Im guessing he meant McCoy. I think that was a mess up when Ole' Pete wrote this list.
78. Jason Peters, OT, Philadelphia Eagles: Tra who? The Eagles went out and traded for the versatile Peters when Philly's long-time LT Thomas signed with Jacksonville this offseason. A perennial Pro Bowl performer while up in Buffalo, he'll be the man protecting Donovan McNabb from the likes of DeMarcus Ware and Justin Tuck.
54. Brian Westbrook, RB, Philadelphia Eagles: Tough not finding a place for Westbrook in the Top 50. He's still one of the more lethal weapons in the league. He just needs to stay healthy in '09. The addition of Jeremy Maclin will open things up even more for the Eagles all-purpose back.
50. Asante Samuel, CB, Philadelphia Eagles: A two-time Super Bowl champion in New England, Samuel brought his ball-hawking corner skills to Philly last year and delivered. Rated here as the top cornerback in the NFC, he'll need to do it in '09 without Brian Dawkins manning the middle.
23. Donovan McNabb, QB, Philadelphia Eagles: The single hardest person to place on this list, McNabb could have been slotted anywhere from No. 5 to No. 50, and there would have been people who both supported and detested the placement. With Brian Dawkins now in Denver, he's the official heart-and-soul of the Eagles. There's a ton of expectations in Philly for '09. Lots of prognosticators have them taking a Lombardi back to the City of Brotherly Love next February. It's on you, Donovan.
Brian is also on the list but I figured since this was for the '09 season, Id respect most people on heres wishes and stop posting anything about him, but he's number 66 is you wanna take a look.

Its cool, I edited some pictures onto mine to make it a bit more enjoyable. I love the Asante Samuel one.

BS
He just lists the players everyone knows or has heard of. Bradley, Cole, Mikell, and at least one of the Patterson/Bunkley duo deserve to be on that list.

I agree.
And let’s not forget Sheldon or DeSean either.

to be fair he is a writer and has to split the list with all the teams in the NFL. This is just off season nonsense I’m sure other teams have some players they think should be there. This is basically league leaders in major categories from last year.

well
this list is great because it is somewhat accurate .. westbrook is right where he should be ,, hes small fragile and cant run between the tackles like a rb such as portis .. mcnabb is the best player on eagles so thats accurate .. bradley is not top 100 yet .. mikkell hahaha .. not even top 10 saftey let alone top 100 .. peters is too low .. he should of been a lot higher. .and calvin johnson is top 20 .. but some of it is accurate

Mikell was 2nd team All-Pro last year which would in my book put him in the top 5.

My book doesn’t work like that. Top 10 I might buy into, not top 5.

u forgot to mention that jack should’ve been in the top 50 considering the fact that asante is #50

Holmes shouldnt be on the list .. im not sure hes better than hines ward .. harrison is to high .. he had one good year .. big ben is too high .. palmer is too high .. cassell is a joke .. he is a product of NE .. he wont be good in KC .. but overall its fairly accurate

Jacobs...
I don’t get it… Never had more than 1,100 rushing yards in a season and is as one-dimensional as they come – 6 receptions last year. 6. 1-2-3-4-5-6. He’s not anywhere close to the top 10 players in the league.
by Bye, Dawk :( on Jun 12, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. I’d also slap the frail tag on him.
He’s also probably, at least in part a product of the Giants. Ward was very comparable in that offense, with teams doubling Plax, and running behind a very good line.
by FredEx on Jun 12, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jacobs is NOT top 10
I don’t know that he’s ""frail""", he’s just too tall.
I don’t know where to rank him tho. Cuz when he’s healty, yea the Giants O-Line made him what he is, but he’s still gigantic and as good a RB in the league carring the ball.
I mean if Westbrook is #54, #70 sounds about right for Jacobs.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 12, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe not the best word choice, but certainly an injury concern. I wonder how good he can be without an effective passing game (if that happens). I wonder even more how well he’d do if he didn’t have that line. Tough to say.
he’s still gigantic
And no offense directed at you, but I hate when people say that. I know you actually look at production and talent and such, but a lot of people throw it out there as some great accolade of his. If anything I think its probably a detriment to him, as he’s likely to get hurt and miss games. I attribute much more the Giants line than his massiveness.
by FredEx on Jun 12, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
if the guy could stay healty, I might be able to agree with JIBTA, cuz Jacobs is a beast with the rock.
Its really not all the O-line either. Jacobs is incredibly quick for any RB not just a guy his size. Countless times when he was hurt you could see holes that Ward was getting stuffed in that when Jacobs was playing he’d be through it already.
Jacobs is a unique talent. He as much a force because of his size as he is a liability cuz of his size.
He has 6 catches, and yea I know that eagles fans think that’s horrible cuz of the guy you have (and I don’t like it either, Tiki Barber was as much a catching threat as Westbrook), but that’s just not his game.

the rb
only latly has a rb catching passes come up .. LJ was dominant for like 5 years and didnt catch passes

LJ was dominant for like 5 years and didnt catch passes
Statistical evidence?
He was dominate for 2 years. In 05 and 06, he was over 1700 both seasons. I’ll give you dominance there. Over those two seasons he did catch 74 passes for 753 yards.
As for 3 more seasons he was dominate? He never eclipsed 1000 yards aside from those two years. In fact he only broke 600 yards once.
When I think of dominant, I want a guy on the field, producing, and getting a lot more than 600 yards.

jacobs
ill take jacobs over deangelo williams .. turner and some of the other average rbs on that list .. jacobs is easily top 3 in the league .. and a full workload could mean 2000 yards .. hes a monster .. ypc is disgusting .. and thats what you should be looking at when juding a rb
by jack is better than asante on Jun 13, 2009 3:10 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Easily top 3? You could argue he’s not in the top 3 in the NFC East.
by FredEx on Jun 13, 2009 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jacobs Top 3?
wow.
I mean when the guy’s healthy and not nicked up, which is RARE, Yea, I could put him right up there with any RB as a force with the rock.
But the guy has more injuries than any RB in the league. Unlike even Westbrook, usually there are severe enough to knock him out of the game.
He has plenty of games where he gets 50 yards in a quarter, but then doesn’t play the rest of the game.
As for a 16 game season? Id take Portis over him anyday. Westbrook too tho he’s injured a lot too, but his injuries are usually playable.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 13, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no way
you can make a case for portis .. but jacobs over westy any day .. hes a monster .. and you rotated rbs .. he put up 70 yards in the first half .. you build a lead .. then you ran ward and bradshaw to keep him fresh .. no more ward means a full workload .. which translates into close to 2000 yard season

When Jacobs can get 2,000 yards in a season, please come to me first.
God, you’re an Eagles fan? You’re first one to praise a Redskin, Giants, or Cowboy player over any Eagles player.
Moo.

dude, seriously…where the fk does your love for jack come from…why is he your boy?? he hasn’t played a down in the NFL…
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

If he was being kept fresh last season, and still got injured, what makes you think he can even stay healthy enough to have a shot at 2,000?
Yes, Ward too away touches, and therefore yards, but it kept him fresh and gave him better odds to stay healthy. You don’t assume he’s going to just double his stats because the back up is gone. Between the wear and tear, less rest, and potentially more men in the box I think expecting close to 2,000 is way overboard.
by FredEx on Jun 13, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Overboard is just that
There is no way Jacobs will eclipse the 2000, or even 1500 yard mark. 1200? Yes, that’s a possibility. Given Jacobs history, he has not played a full season. You can probably attribute that to his style though. As much punishment he delivers, he also absorbs it too! Anyone who has ever watched how the Giants use their RB’s can attest to this. Last year…
Jacobs/Ward for the 1st half
Jacobs/Ward for a portion of the 3rd, # of possessions ahead
Ward/Bradshaw for at least the remaining of the 3rd
Bradshaw to close it out
It does depend on any particular game on how many carries Jacobs get’s, by virtue of the score. If the Giants are behind, they’ll utilize him more, and Ward moreso in the passing game but overall, depending on factors, they will try to lessen his touches!
by Hootman on Jun 13, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only reason to lighten Jacobs workload was
to keep him healthy. Not really cuz of freshness, not really cuz of Ward being necessary to be on the field, but cuz Jacobs is injury prone.
THere is no way he’ll get carries to get 2000 yards. The only reason he’d try is to get a big contract, but that’s not the type of guy Jacobs is and he already has his contract now.
