Is McNabb a future Hall of Fame Quarterback?

I was looking around different sports sites and came across this. This link got me wondering. Is Donovan McNabb a future Hall of Famer?

Many argue that since Donovan has yet to receive a ring, he is automatically counted out for consideration for a spot in the HoF. I beg to differ. Look at quarterbacks such as Trent Dilfer and Jim Plunkett. Despite winning Super Bowls, are they a lock to get into the HoF. Do they even have a shot to get in?

Here are some household names in the Hall of Fame that do not have Super Bowl Rings.

- George Blanda

- Dan Fouts

- Sonny Jurgensen

- Dan Marino

These guys have had exceptional careers and are enshired with the best in the HoF. Yet, none have rings on their fingers. They ended up in the HoF because of stellar careers and their performance on the field. Each of these players ment a lot to the team. I think the same can be said with Donovan McNabb.

Lets compare McNabb to these players listed above. Ex-Eagle Jurgensen passed for 32,224 yards in his career of 18 seasons.  In 10 seasons and counting, McNabb has passed for 29,320 yards. Blanda passed for 26,920 yards. The completion rate is not far off either. McNabb's completion rate as of now is 58.9%. Marino's was 59.4%, Jurgensen's was 57.1%, Blanda's was 47.7%, and Fouts was 58.8%. McNabb is just as accurate as these quarterbacks, better then some.

But, what really makes McNabb stick out is his Touchdown:Interception Ratio. McNabb has passed for 194 Touchdowns to 90 Picks. Thats a little bit better then 2 touchdowns to 1 pick. Marino passed for 420 touchdowns to 252 picks. That is a good bit less then 2 touchdowns to 1 pick. Blanda passed for 236 touchdowns to 277 picks. He has thrown more picks then touchdowns. Fouts looks about the same with 254 touchdowns to 242 picks. McNabb is safe with the ball, much more safer then many of the quarterbacks in the NFL. He doesn't make as much mistakes and shows poise under pressure.

Another part that goes to McNabb's favor is his rushing game. In his younger days, McNabb was a threat to score running as well as passing. While he has lost a good bit of that magic, he has shown from time to time that defenses cannot sleep on him running the ball.

So, does McNabb have what it takes to get into the HoF. Keep up the way he is going and yes. A couple more productive seasons and he will rival some of the best in the HoF in terms of statistics. A ring or two may not hurt either. Remember, Jon Elway took 17 years before he won his first Super Bowl. McNabb's time will come. But, the stats do not lie. If he keeps it up, McNabb should be well on his way to the Hall of Fame.

He’s in.

His resume is too impressive to deny and the fact that he will be in the league for several more years to come almost guarantees his entry into the HoF.

He's in

If he continues w/ 3000 yard seasons and keeps the stats up….he’s def. in. You can compare him to HOF’s like Jim Kelly and Mcnabb’s numbers will be better. If you run through the numbers, no one can deny the career Mcnabb has had. They can give all the accuracy b.s. they want, but he’s right behind Marino in that category and Mcnabb has a better TD to INT perct.

I’m a die hard, but i’m defending Mcnabb from a fans standpoint, but by his numbers and his accomplishments. You can call Brady and Peyton some of the best to play the game, Mcnabb only needs the ring to have his name thrown in w/ these two. I’m not a stat person, but isn’t Mnabb third behind these two when it comes to wins in the past 7 years or so? There’s no denying him if he has a ring, but if plays 5 more years w/o a major drop off, he gets in w/o the ring.

MCNABB and PEYTON are the only two qbs i believe to ever throw for 30tds and fewer then 10 picks. Mcnabb 31/8 to Peytons 31/9. Peyton holds the rookie record for interceptions, 28 his rookie year. Mcnabb has thrown 13 in a season at most. Mcnabbs numbers and accomplishments will hold there own.

From a fans standpoint, he’s the been the best Eagle qb we’ve ever had. I couldn’t be more proud to be an Eagle fan if Donovan Mcnabb became a hall of famer. I’m not in love w/ him, Randall is my favorite eagle qb ever, but i do love Dmac as our QB.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

What if..

Big Ben went down with a career ending injury right now..would he be a HOF’er? I don’t think he would.

This thread is about Mcnabb, so I don’t want to get off topic, but check out Big Ben’s wiki page and read some of his records/accomplishments and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Not that it matters, but ...

… except for Jim Brown, I can’t think of a modern NFL hall of famer who spent less than ten years in the league. And to be clear – Big Ben is no Jim Brown. As for McNabb, I don’t know. I like his resume versus a guy like Warner (McNabb has consistently been able to earn a starting position, at least). And, in my view, he’s only a half step behind Young and Favre. Still, I think the Hall of Fame should be for dominant forces in the league. And, as much as I respect McNabb, in this era, that means Manning and Brady.

by dave in san mateo on May 5, 2009 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Lynn Swann was only in the league for 9 years and not all of them were productive

If he makes it, then McNabb makes it. Look up his stats and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

dominant forces in the league

Did you not watch McNabb from 2000 to 2002? When Peyton couldn’t win a playoff game, and Brady was just some no-name who get lucky?

Its not fair to McNabb to ignore his early accomplishments and focus on Manning and Brady’s recent success compared to his recent injuries.

Every year I say that this year will prove it to the doubters, and every year they are back. maybe the absence of Dawkins, Thomas, and Runyan is what its going to take to show that McNabb is the dominant force of the Eagles franchise success under Reid.

Weapons

Lets also remember that McNabb did all of this with limited weapons….Thrash/Pinkston as a starting wideout tandem it can’t get worse then that. Look at what he did with a dominate #1….he had career numbers. Payton has had Wayne/Harrison/Clark forever I could be a hall of famer with those guys. Brady has also had limited weapons in my opinion but still better options that Thrash/Pinkston.

Big Bens records are mostly from his rookie year. He’s a good qb, but i personally don’t think he’s an elite qb that they make him out to be. He plays in a great system in one of the best if not the best football city. (fk pitt and their 6 rings) He’s in a system that only requires him to throw the ball 15 times a game. Isn’t his winning perct. way down if he tops 20-25 passing attempts a game. Thats a hall of fame qb??? My fav. record is his qb rating from the ’05 Super Bowl. HAHAHA

If his line holds up the way it did last year, and he continues to take a beating, he’s def. not gonna make it to be even considered for the hall of fame.

Yeah but at some point superbowl rings overshadow stats. Bottom line is the guy is a winner, even if he gets it done in the most ugly way possible.

Is Dawk?

I got into it with a cowboy fan the other day about Dawk and the HOF.

i love Dawk just like everyone else, but i dont think he’s truly gonna get the HOF recognition he deserves without having a ring on his finger. I would say the whole country respects Dawkins as one of the best players, but he won’t get hall of fame consideration for that.

meh… i think the fact that he revolutionized his position will supercede the fact that he doesn’t have a ring… just my opinion though

Do you think Kurt Warner is a HOFer?

I think if 5 makes 1 more SB, regardless to the fact he wins it or not, its hard to turn down a guy with 2 SB appearances and 4 other NFC championship appearances. That means five would have been to 6 NFC championships, I don’t know any QB has been at the top of his division for so long. Hard to turn those stats down. But if he wins, he is in hands down.

Also, do you think Roethlisberger is in? He’s got 2 rings. Just wondering what your opinion is about that.

I’d hate to say either way with Big Ben yet. I just don’t like the fact that certain aspects of a career can make or break you HOF chances, rather than the complete body of work you have at the end of your career. Say, for instance, that Big Ben somehow tanks for the next 6 seasons, horribly. Then, I’d say no… but if he produces decently well for the remainder of his career, then probably yes.

As for Warner, man I dunno. I just can’t get past his last year or so in STL and then all of the play up until this year. In that timespan, he was a horrid liability at the position. Constantly put the ball on the ground. I dunno. Again, I’d want to see the body of his carrer work and evaluate it then.

Again, I just hate the fact that Super Bowls are such a determining factor in the process and can negate years of pure suck. That’s just my opinion though, and the people that matter don’t share it.

Warner

Name another QB who took two different teams to the Super Bowl. And has been to three Super Bowls. #3 all time in passer rating. #2 all time pass completion percentage. And has even better post-season stats. And a 2 time league MVP. And a 4 time pro-bowler. And has the inspiring not-drafted grocery bagger story.

(fingers thumping the desk) I’m waiting ….

Not a Hall of Famer? Are you kidding?

by Andrew B on May 5, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

name another QB that was gifted with such a terrific offense?

Playing with the peak of the Greatest Show on Turf with Marshall Faulk and Holt and Bruce in their prime as well as a duo of Pro Bowl WRs in Fitz and Boldin is amazing. QBs are really a huge deciding factor in how the offense runs but when you are given that much talent around you, it makes it all that easier to succeed. A prime example WILL, mark that, WILL be Cassel. You put anyone behind that line and given Moss and Welker to throw to and you’ll get success.

However, I do agree that Warner will be in the HoF. Everything you said, except the grocery bag story, is evidence enough haha.

Rothelisberger and Warner

Clearly HOF’ers. Berger has longer to go to prove it, Warner has already done it.

I have a question, and didn't want to create an entire post for it.

Do you know when the scrimmage Offense vs Defense will be for Camp? I want to schedule off to go to camp, but don’t want to go to a 10,10,10 day or something boring. I want to catch the scrimmages this year. Do you know what day the scrimmages are?

I think Dawk is in ...

… consistently one of the best at his position at the beginning and end of it (Pro Bowl last year, for instance).

HOF usually has a couple of non-name recognition guys that go in with the QBs and superstars every year.

I bet if some QB goes in Dawk’s year, Philly overruns Canton.

Maybe he and McNabb can go in the same year :)

I actually put together a post about this a month or two ago but never posted it and now I can't find my stats.

When you look at the Quarterbacks in the HOF without a ring (Kelly, Marino, Jurgenson, etc) McNabb needs to stay at his level for another 2-4 years to match their numbers. When you look at the QBs in the HOF with Rings (Aikman, Bradshaw, Young, etc.) he has most of them beat in the stats column but lacks the ring.

If McNabb wins a ring this year he’s a lock, if he plays for 2-4 years at the same level or better and doesn’t get injured he’s a lock. If McNabb retires after this year and has a so-so year he still gets a lot of consideration and I’m pretty confident he would get voted in.

Warren Moon

Damnit – I just spent 10 minutes doing a McNabb / Warren Moon comparison and accidently hit the back button on the browser. Since I’m at work I’ll now just simply say that if you’re looking for comparison cases I think Warren Moon should be a prime example. The comparison shows that McNabb still has a fair share of resume building to do. McNabb can’t start fading now. Time will tell though. Naturally a ring would be a really nice addition to the resume.

I think it comes down to whether he wins a ring ...

… otherwise, right now, it’s iffy.

Remember, the final votes on these things are cast by humans, so the argument is not always whether he DESERVES to get in, but whether he WILL.

And as artifical a measure of greatness as Super Bowl victories sometimes are, winning one would put McNabb with the greats of his era (and those 5 NFCCGs look a lot better after closing the deal on one).

Otherwise, all he’s got to go on is longevity and consistency … which aren’t bad, but.

Maybe it’s the difference between being a first-ballot guy and an Art Monk wait.
