I don't think it hurts

to link to the other predictions so people can compare and contrast. And so people who missed the previous ones can look at the others without having to sift through the fanposts.

But since I just did it on yesterday’s thread, I’ll spare you … and add you to the list for next time :)

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

As for your points, I like keeping White and Daniels as special teamers, but White and Daniels and Mays sounds like a lot of extra LBs.

8 DBs seems like one short. Macho Harris will have a role with the team, but probably on practice squad or the phantom IR “redshirt” injury, IMHO

9 OL … interesting take.

Eugene Bright … might

I’d rather have Reggie Brown as a 6th WR than Kyle Eckel as a 5th RB.

Interesting take though. Different from the others for certain.

Ikegwuonu is making the team

You really think we’re going into the season with just 8 DBs? Also, the roster has 52 players on it by my count.

And do you really believe Eugene Bright is making the squad over Reggie Brown? Really? Why not just make Dorenbos, who already blocks, into more of a blocking TE? I think Bright is camp fodder. Even if you don’t think Brown makes the team, you still think Bright makes it over a guy like WR Gibson (5th round pick)?

Mike McGlynn doesn’t make it? He’s practicing with the 1st teamers right now while Jean-Gilles is injured. How does he go from tied for 2nd string into not on the team?

None of our O-line draft picks make the squad?

Our d-line has only 9 players on it. We usually go with 10-11. Regardless of how you feel about Klecko, he’s a solid pass rushing DT, and I’d be real surprised to see us carry 7 LBs when we would normally be inclined to carry 5-6. Tracy is a nice prospect, but he could sit on the practice squad another year as Gaither insurance. If he does make the team, though, along with Mays and Daniels, I don’t see how Gaither is on the squad.

Those are a lot of depth player quibbles. I like the boldness in predicting Abiamiri will start, hopefully that’s accurate, ditto Ingram. I very much doubt, though, that Ingram goes in as the #1 TE. I suspect he’ll get a bunch of playing time, but as the #2 TE on the squad.

I count 53 guys...

Yes, I think Eugene Bright makes the team. A lot of people are quoted on PhiladelphiaEagles.com saying he was good and has a shot of making the team. The only two spots on my roster that I think are up for grabs are Eckel’s spot and Bryan Smith’s spot.

by labe35 on May 3, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I got 52 as well. I think you counted Winston and Justice as two separate people.

by FredEx on May 3, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with you Alon on Celek … yes Ingram looks real good right now catching passes but it’s very early and it is yet to be seen what he is going to do when the pads go on… However I don’t think his ability and talent can be kept off the field but on the other hand Celek really showed he can play in this league and I’m a big Celek fan… I could see them splitting playing time come season.

If Jack doesn't make the team, what will that guy Jack is Better Than Asante do?

Will he find a new screen name or just stop posting because he will develop an total hatred for the Eagles?

he wont give up that easy

he will follow him to whatever team he goes to, or bitch and moan on here for an entire season that he is on the practice squad

unless he get’s IR’d for his hammy or something else

I don’t think Eckel makes the team.

by The Legend on May 3, 2009 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

now that you bring it up...

I don’t think he will either…thanks

by labe35 on May 3, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Mays/Daniels/White are probably competing for one spot.

Ikegwuono should make the team for sure.
Klecko as the 4th DT.
McGlynn as the 10th and final O-Lineman.
Reggie in top 6 WRs

You had 52, Take off two of those LBs. That’s now 50. Add Jack, Klecko, Reggie Brown, and McGlynn. That’s one too many now, and I think Eckel is gone to make it work.

Bright has a chance, he only has to be out Schobel, One of those two will most likely be on the team.

Also I think Swank has a good shot to stick around.

by FredEx on May 3, 2009 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

thanks...

and I also like Swank a lot because I am a Wake Forest fan. I think he will make the team at some point but I see him on the practice squad this year.

by labe35 on May 3, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I like your take FredEx

I think my thoughts are pretty close to yours.

I think Klecko makes it, I think Reggie Brown makes it, I think Eckel and Booker might be battling for one spot, and those LBs are definitely battling. There could also be some surprises in the secondary. And McGlynn just ran with the 1s, he seems pretty highly regarded.

I never hope for an injury, but if there is one/are some, it will save somebody’s job.

The sign of having a really deep team is cutting guys who can play in this league. I am certain we’ll be doing that.

by D3Keith on May 3, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Klecko, for sure makes it. People downplay his contributions, but as mentioned above, he is a terrific pass rushing DT. He had two sacks in two games before he was pressed into emergency fullback duty.

Bright is most certainly just a camp body. Everyone writes positive things about people in camp, it means nothing. Any number of transactions can occur between now and roster cuts, so putting anything concrete down about “fringe” guys is shaky.

I’d like to see Eckel get a spot, as he can play FB and mop-up/emergency running back. He probably won’t but versatility like his (and Weaver’s obviously) goes a long way methinks.

This could also be the year Winston Justice gets cut. McGlynn and Gibson could both make it. As could any of the linemen we just drafted.

by Walcott on May 3, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

Good point

there should be a lot of competition among the lineman, and that’s one of the positions fans generally know least about, as compared to Juan, Andy and the gang. We might have an Artis Hicks or Jamaal Jackson come out of nowhere.

Ingram/Celek

I’m excited about what Ingram might give us, but I think we need to temper our expectations. No way he starts as a rookie.

by JimmyK on May 3, 2009 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

The #'s

- We’ll definitely keep 6 WR’s…no way Andy goes with 5, and we won’t cut Reggie Brown
- No way we keep 2 FBs…Eckel is out
-7 LBs to 4 CBs is out of proportion…FredEx is right, I think Daniels, White, and Mays are competing for one spot, and I think Mays gets it.
- I dont think Bright makes it, and I do think Klecko does.

Dark horse

Maybe Gaither gets cut, if they think Daniels/White/Mays have more potential / special teams contributions than he does.

by Alon on May 3, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmmm...

Interesting call. It’s a longshot because he brings a lot of versatility (he can play all 3 LB positions), but if they really like Mays and if the kid we drafted in the 7th round (Fokou?) can play, it’s not out of the question.

by JimmyK on May 3, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's how the roster broke down for Week 1 last year...

3 QB, 3 RB, 1 FB, 6 WR, 3 TE, 9 OL
6 DE, 4 DT, 6 LB, 4 CB, 5 S
1 K, 1 P, 1 LS

How will it be different this year, in terms of positional breakdown? I have trouble seeing where anything will change. To those who have Jack Ikegwuonu making the team, he’s almost definitely the fifth corner (behind Samuel, Brown, Hobbs and Hanson). What position would the Birds cut back on to make room for him? I don’t see where the give would be. Any ideas?

I will support labe35 that Eugene Bright has a shot at the roster. If the Eagles do carry three tight ends like they did last year, I’d much rather have a former defensive end who can supposedly block well than Matt Schobel.

by tgthree on May 3, 2009 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

You don't need 6 DEs either

We just happen to have that many we like.

From the numbers above, a team could survive with 4 safeties, 5 WRs, 9 DLs and 5 LBs, so those are all potential places where we could lose a spot to gain one elsewhere.

Specific to the Eagles, their LBs and DLs are versatile enough to save a spot somewhere.

I also think youth could be a factor … who can they get away with stashing on the practice squad?

Ingram QB

I hear he played QB in High School and was recruited at Florida as a QB. Any chance we ditch Feeley and make this guy the emergency QB?

Runyan

Any shot we re-sign him as a backup (and possibly use him in goaline formations)? What a great backup he’d be.

Iguana makes the team for sure. No way we enter the season with only 4 CBs. One of those LBs will have to go

The only other thing I'll add ...

… is that we often have a surprise cut, trade or signing during camp.

Between now and the final roster, there will be opportunities to trade from where we’re strong. I don’t know if that’s likely or not, but we might want to get something for our extra DE, WR or OL rather than end up cutting one for nothing.

Also, an injury could quickly change the projection. I know you all know this …

It's true

I was up at camp last year and particularly impressed with McDougle, only to see him end up a Giant a couple weeks later.

Dorenbos

I know he is only a long snapper, but does anyone know what other position he played while in college?

I think Joe Mays really has to show he can play special teams to make the roster. Either he or Tracy White so Jack Ikegwuonu makes the team.

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on May 3, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

I think he was purely a long snapper in college too. This ESPN article claims he had played some fullback and linebacker, but it sounds like that was before his days at UTEP.

by FredEx on May 3, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks, FredEx

As a fan, Dorenbos is one of my favorite players because of his personal story and what he has overcome.

Dorengos might be able to play in some short yardage situations in a pinch.

by Baron Dainer Von Tresvant on May 3, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

A lot of people (myself included) don’t really value his importance as a long snapper. His consistency, talent, and magician skills make him deserving of a roster spot.

If we cut Eckel (which I think happens) we could also use Cole or Klecko in a pinch. We had zero fullbacks last year, so I don’t think we (or the front office in determining the roster) need to worry about what happens if Weaver is out too too much (if it all).

by FredEx on May 3, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Eckle

Eckle will make the team, he will go for that tough extra yard and helped improve our 3rd down conversion rate after we signed him. he is a good blocker too. i feel like our TE’s wont be blocking so it will be up to the backs to pick up the blitz

by worldphuckinchamps on May 3, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Its definitely possible, but as for short yard conversions, we added Stacy Andrews, Peters and Weaver this offseason. We also get Shawn Andrews back. I don’t think short yardage is going to be a big issue this year, and thus the need for Eckel is gone.

by FredEx on May 3, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That being said he has a chance to beat out Booker, but I don’t think all 5 of those backs stay. I say Booker or Eckel needs to go.

by FredEx on May 3, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree i think its between booker and eckle. and stacy andrews, peters, and weaver will all help with the short yard conversions but i think they will still keep eckle to pick up the blitz and so westbrook/mccoy dont have to do it all the time and when weaver is out

by worldphuckinchamps on May 4, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't really understand

why it is that we can’t just call him a TE and line him up there and teach him to block from a TE set. Solves a lotta issues.

bs

jack is better than hobbs .. hobbs is here to return kick offs .. klecko is a long shot to make the team .. no way they keep all those linebackers .. this roster is stupid .. as much as i love jack .. there is a bout a 1 percent chance he gets cut .. 95 percent chance he makes the team .. and 4 percent chance they IR him again .. i think thats a 100 .. but there is 0 PERCENT CHANCE reggie brown gets cut .. traded? maybe .. but prob not .. he is a sure bet to be on this team and has a great chance to start

jack’s hammy is better than hobbs’! reggie brown is better than every other WR we have. macho is too slow. i know the eagles. they should cut asante. we should give two 1st round picks for peppers. blah blah blah.
i need to post more shit on jack getting injured to keep this jackass quiet. that was the most peaceful and reasonable day this site has seen in weeks!

those are all true statements .. hobbs is a back up corner .. jack is an eventual starter .. reggie was last years starter and got hurt .. the eagles are high on him even if u arnt .. he is at worst the third wr on this team .. i never said cut asante .. just said hes over paid .. hes still productive .. peppers is worth two first. . theres a short list of guys worth two first .. larry fitz .. AP ..some young qbs etc. . and peppers is on that list .. a dlinemen that size and dominant .. only comes along once a decade .. would i do it? maybe .. but if i was the panthers i wouldnt take anything less than that
