Where do various Eagles rank?

The Sporting News along with RealScouts.com has been writing up various lists of their top 20 NFL players at every position. Most lists have Eagles on them. Here's what they've got so far.

Donovan McNabb is the 7th ranked QB

7. Donovan McNabb, Eagles. Contrary to those who think McNabb is on the decline, he set a personal career high in passing yards last year and the 23 touchdowns were his most since 2004. McNabb still has a strong, accurate arm, so this season looks promising. The line has been upgraded significantly, and potential impact players have been added at the skill positions.

Jamaal Jackson is the 5th ranked center

5. Jamaal Jackson, Eagles. As Eagles' coach Andy Reid shuffled the line in the offseason, he certainly didn't even think of moving away from Jackson. He's an immovable object in the middle of the line at 330 pounds, but he also has impressive athleticism. He gets off the snap and reaches the defensive tackle quickly, and he can pull and seal the corner for perimeter runs. He'll be even better in '09, leading an improved line that added Jason Peters and Stacy Andrews.

Brent Celek sneaks in as the 19th ranked TE

19. Brent Celek, Eagles. After spending time in Smith's shadow, Celek takes over as the starter. Celek has soft hands and is athletic and fast enough to be a threat down the seam. This offense still runs through RB Brian Westbrook. An improved line, a healthy Westbrook and dangerous perimeter threats should allow Celek opportunities to make an impact in '09.

Jason Peters is ranked as the #3 offensive tackle in the NFL

3. Jason Peters, Eagles. Peters got some bad advice on his contract issues last year in Buffalo. As a result, he missed a lot of practice time and it showed in his play. Now that he has a long-term deal in Philly, all that is behind him and he can focus on returning to the form that made him one of the top young linemen in the league.

The Eagles have two guards amongst the sites' top 20 and it's the Andrews brothers

4. Shawn Andrews, Eagles: Right now the Eagles are trying Andrews at right tackle. He has the athleticism to pull off that move, but he is a three-time Pro Bowl selection as a guard. He has tremendous size and athletic ability. He can dominate as a straight-ahead run blocker, but he also has the lateral movement skills to play in space. It seems he is over his injuries and bout with depression and could see a return to form playing with an improved unit this year.

20. Stacy Andrews, Eagles. We're putting him in here. Though he played right tackle in Cincinnati and got paid tackle money to come to Philly, he's been moved to right guard in the early going, and that's probably not a bad move. Though he played well outside, his 345-pound frame will serve him well on the interior. Everything about him is big, from his body, to his hands, to his height and long arms. He plays with power and can dominate as a short area blocker.

No Eagles managed to make TSN's top 20 WRs in the NFL. Yet...

Idunno. Maybe I overrate McNabb because I’m a homer but I take offense to them saying Rivers and Palmer are better. Rivers has freaking LT and Gates and Palmer had Housh and that crazy motherfucker, whatever his name is this week.

Interestingly they did put him above Warner despite the Eagles’ loss in the NFCCG. I know FItzgerald was really the one who won that game and not Warner but still thats about as close as you can get to a direct comparison. In the end its very difficult to make a rank list like this so I’m not too bothered.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Rivers

Phillip Rivers, right now, is a better QB than McNabb. You can say all you want about his weapons, but LT was a gimp last year (Westbrook was better in the games I saw) and having a great tight end hardly makes up for lacking a great receiver. Rivers took a giant step forward this past year, and it was him making his teammates look good, not the other way around.

Don’t know all that much about Carson Palmer, though I think his injuries may catch up to him in a bad way this year.

As for McNabb, I think this is his spot: One of the most reliable QBs in the league whose experience and smarts are compensating for his diminishing physical tools. Having said that, he still is an incredibly streaky QB, and while he is deadly accurate at times, he will sometimes make game changing errors. Take a look at the NFC title game, he kept them in that game, and almost won it for them, but he also made several first-half mistakes that could have kept them out of that hole. He’s probably my favorite QB in the league, but it is important to realize his short comings.

having a great tight end hardly makes up for lacking a great receiver.

Great tight ends can easily break through linebackers in coverage. Because of this, a lot of teams will have a safety spy the really good TEs (Gonzalez, Witten, Gates) and this takes away from the CBs support on the outside receivers. Without defenses paying attention to Gates, would Vincent Jackson have had such a good year? Also, with Gonzo gone, don’t be surprised if Dwayne Bowe loses some production (granted, even Cassel is an upgrade over Thigpen), so that might make up for the increased coverage.

Westbrook was pretty gimpy, Mcnabb lacks a great WR and he took his team further…

McNabb

Hey guys ……tell me what’s happening with Donovan? Any word on signing a new contract?? Need this to happen soon!!!

by Scream'n Eagle on May 18, 2009 12:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why?

Why does this need to happen soon? He has three years left and he’s 32.

by bdptcob on May 18, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not really McNabb can void his contract for the 2011 season as long as he plays the last game of 2010 or something like that, even though his contract runs until 2013.

It makes me ill that Carson Palmer is always ranked as high as he is, and please don’t give me that Carson hasn’t played on good teams if you are a top 5 QB then you should be able get your team into the playoffs year in and year out. I mean McNabb got there with Trash and Aligator Arms Pinkston a couple years in a row.

Can someone explain to me how more of our guys didnt make this “top 20” list? How are Trent Cole, Asante Samual, and Brian Westbrook not considered top 20 in their respective positions?

by Qu1nTeR on May 18, 2009 8:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the guys that made this

did not do rankings for running backs or for any defense yet

Let's get it.

Nevermind they didnt rank those positions…. =(

Does anyone else think Jamaal really is the 5th best center???

Or is the NFL real shallow in those positions???

To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

by XxBleedGreen5xX on May 18, 2009 8:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I always thought Jamaal was the leakest link on our O-line. Andy didn’t draft another center though, so maybe I am wrong.

by Clyde Simmons on May 18, 2009 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just because they didn't draft a center doesn't mean he's safe

Cole has been listed as his backup, and McGlynn supposedly was viewed as well-suited to Center when he was drafted. Neither of these guys will play much guard with Herremanns and Stacy (when his knee’s OK) starting. Certainly they’ll be his competiton in camp.

by since1961 on May 18, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nick Cole is going to challenge Jamaal this summer for starting Center PE.com said.

that’s a perfect scenario because either Jamaal will get his ass in gear and play lights out, or we have his immediate and future successor already in house and in the system

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on May 18, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The thing is

I know that alot of us get down on Jamal sometimes, but do we really remember that many instances where he clearly did something bad? Like a blatant missed block or whatever? Cause I can’t really think of many. Then again, when does he do something that really stands out? Then again, he’s a center….

Honestly, I guess I’m pretty happy just to have a big ol’dude in the middle, who isn’t missing lots of blocks, and who doesn’t snap the ball over McNabbs head in the shotgun. There are some pretty crappy centers in the NFL…

they did do a rb ranking and westbrook comes in fourth

McNabb=Accurate?

Might be the first time I’ve seen the words McNabb and accurate in the same sentence.

by bdptcob on May 18, 2009 10:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe...

…they meant accurate on the deep pass? It astounds me he can perfectly throw a 70 yard bomb but can’t throw a 7 yard slant with much accuracy at all.

by ajay on May 18, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

accurracy

He’s kind of funny in that he’ll hit bombs perfectly, and he’ll nail strikes in between 2-3 defenders, but he’ll blow easy passes. He’s a streaky QB, but when he’s hitting on all cylinders, he’s as accurate as pretty much any QB in the league.

by Livingonapear on May 18, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish my girlfriend was streaky.

And Rivers. I think he’s better than Rothelisberger and Brees too.

How many winning season’s has Brees had? Two?

by Andrew B on May 18, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

McNabb isn’t better then Rivers.

Rivers:
QB Rating: 105.5%
34 TDs
11 Int
4009 Yards
8.4 YPA
312 Completion
478 Attempts
65.3 Completion%

McNabb:
QB Rating: 86.4%
23 TDs
11 Ints

If we’re talking about going into the 2009 season, I don’t see how it doesn’t. Outside of any injury, Rivers should put up those numbers again or hell even better than those. McNabb, too, should improve his numbers, with a healthy Curtis going into the season and DeSean Jackson getting better. But I don’t see McNabb posting 30+ TD or 100+ passer rating.

YEs, especially if “playoff wins/games” were one of the stats listed…

by JasonB on May 21, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rivers’ record is 3-3
McNabb’s record currently is 9-6 (or 10-6, can’t remember which)
Career wise, McNabb playing better.
(Of course, between the two, they’re 1-6 in Championship game. Both might want to improve on that…)

I should’ve said heading into 2009 season, Rivers’ better QB. I also avoided the career stats between the two because I’m trying to talk about 2009 season.
