Cowboys and Redskins - Oldest O-Lines in the NFL

I did a little research on the oldest O-Lines in the NFL, and to my delight, they are none other than 2 of our NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins.  The Jags, Raiders, Bears, and Lions O-Lines were the other notable older units - Anyone see anything that the Cowboys, Redskins, Bears, Lions, Raiders, and Jags have in common?  Give up?  They were all golfing in January.

Surprisingly, of the 18 combined picks these two teams had in the draft this year, ONLY ONE pick was used on an O-Lineman.  Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder...Fantastic!!!

The oldest...   Washington Redskins

  < Shrinkage?

LT - Chris Samuels - 31

LG - Derrick Dockery - 28

C - Casey Rabach - 31

RG - Randy Thomas - 33

RT - Jon Jansen - 33

Average age - 31.2 years old

How many offensive linemen did the Redskins draft in the 2009 NFL draft?  NONE.  Well, as usual, they didn't have many picks (6), but it's unimaginable that they wouldn't address that issue.

2nd Oldest... Dallas Cowboys

LT - Flozell Adams - 33 (Turns 34 on Monday)

LG - Kyle Kosier - 30

C - Andre Gurode - 30

RG - Leonard Davis - 30

RT - Marc Colombo - 30

Average age - 30.8 years old

Now, the Cowboys had 12 picks this year.  How many of those 12 picks were used on offensive linemen?  ONE, 3rd round pick Robert Brewster.

By Comparison - Philadelphia Eagles

LT - Jason Peters - 27

LG - Todd Herremans - 26

C - Jamaal Jackson - 29

RG - Stacy Andrews - 27

RT - Shawn Andrews - 26

Average age - 27 years old

And our first 2 guys off the bench...

Nice Cole - 24

Max Jean-Gilles - 25

NICE!!!

And just to round out the last division opponent... New York Giants

LT - David Diehl - 28

LG - Rich Seubert - 30

C - Shaun O'Hara - 31

RG - Chris Snee - 27

RT - Kareem McKenzie - 29

Average age - 29 years old

(Note - I was a little surprised by this one.  I thought they were younger than this.)  However, the Giants had a great draft and were happy to have William Beatty (OT, UConn) slip to them at the 60th overall pick.

I think that its hard to find a line around the league

that has this kind of tallent and youth on it. First of all you start out with our two best Linemen in Jason Peters and Shawn Andrews who are two huge athletic dominating Linemen. Does any other line in the NFL have this kind of two physical freaks anchoring them. Then you move on to the other three and there is Jamaal Jackson who was just called the 5th best center in the league on the real scouts listing. Then there are Todd Herrimans and Stacy Andrews who Andy Reid said performed at a pro bowl level last year. It is just so exciting to think about.

Let's get it.

Agreed.

On paper, Philly has the best line in football right now. Peters is the most talented left tackle in football and should be motivated to return to his 2007 form after getting his contract and being with a top organization. The Andrews brothers, if healthy, should form the most dominant right side of any line in football. And the scary thing is, they’re going to get better the more they play together, which should be for at least the next 5 or 6 years.

Are you sure the Jags have one of the oldest lines? Because I think I read that Britton is going to start this year and I know they signed Tra Thomas but they did draft Eugene Monroe and I would probably rather start Monroe then Tra since Monroe is probably a better run blocker and they are a running team.

Good point. With Monroe, that makes them considerably younger. I was using espn’s depth charts, which aren’t the most reliable, but for the purpose of a fanpost it’s good enough.

I would also like to give Bye Dawk credit

for being a thorn in the side of the cowpukes blog. you have a great way of fucking with them without actually fucking with them. you really seem to get under their skin and you are able to do it without name calling or any other childishness.

you really are getting to this one redneck who has posted 2 posts specifically about Bye Dawk today, i guess the first one got yanked.

those dumb hillbillies are all worked over Bye Dawk’s comments, I guess the truth really does hurt!

Dumb Hillbillys?

Speak for yourself buddy. When you start talking about somebodys beliefs other than football it rubs people the wrong way but i suppose thats probally over your head, you dont seem to bright.

I think by hillbilly he was reffering to the guy with the confederate flag in his picture. I mean… In fairness, is it unfair to stereotype people with confederate flags as hillbillies?

Spot on Bye Dawk

news flash to all sporting the confederate flag….YOU LOST! I bet our new pres really boils his blood.

Ha, yeah, I go on there with the intent of not trying to be a jerk and try to stay respectful. But inevitably someone will say something ridiculous about the Eagles, and it just goes from there. Eventually the entire conversation turns to the Eagles, which isn’t really even my intent, but it’s very entertaining.

I don’t even post on many threads over there. Maybe 1 out of 15, but they constantly call for me to be deleted. I don’t get why a little spirited debate is so bad. If a Cowboys fan were on here for example and said the Eagles O-Line is not the best in the league because x, y, and z… Then fine. We’ll argue it out. I mean… Who wants to read a whole list of comments where everyone says “I agree?”

How old was your team lineup last year with Thomas and Runyan?

Almost 30? And they went to the NFC Championship.

It’s been demonstrated, time and time again, that age on the OLine isn’t a bad thing as long as those guys are still able to move and remain healthy.

And our first 2 guys off the bench…

Nice Cole – 24

Max Jean-Gilles – 25

BTW, the first 3 guys off the Cowboys bench: Procter (26), Free (25) and Brewster (22), I can play that game, too.

Ya...

The thing is about Cole and JG is that they are starters on other teams..
I think his point was to show how young AND deep we are on O-line

by ssean2266 on May 18, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

..and also that these guys havent even reached their full potential being so young. We have many years out of our line still ahead of us. Plus if we keep adding lineman in the draft we can slowly groom them into pro-bowl caliber players

by ssean2266 on May 18, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that you're exaggerating a bit...

Who’s Herremans? When I think of Herremans, and I’ve seen him play so I kind of know of what I’m talking about, I think of Kyle Kosier, a guy that tries his hardest, manages to do a decent to good job in a consistent basis but he isn’t anything to feel excited about. He can be replaced.

So, if those guys are as good as you’re trying to imply, why haven’t they been able to replace Herremans? I understand why they haven’t been able to replace a sane Andrews and Jackson (even though he’s inconsistent, but in his good moments is a beast), but Herremans? That’s your team weak link along the OLine and both guys are entering their 4th years of development.

They looked good last year for moments? Well, Montrae Holland looked good for us last year in the small window that he had. And I don’t think much of him, as you can see from the backups that I listed.

Maybe b/c Herramans is prolly the most underrated lineman in the game today???
