A look at past veteran movement from the Eagles
With the talk from certain individuals about whether the Eagles were right or not to allow certain veterans to leave this offseason, I decided to take a look, during the Andy Reid era, of the veterans that the Eagles have let go and their fortunes after leaving the Eagles. Note that it's difficult to find past season free agent movement, so I may be missing some here (or forgetting some. Hey, I've got a 3 week old infant at home, I've got other stuff on my mind). Also, I really only looked at "significant" departures, as opposed to backups who may have left and gone on to other teams.
Jeremiah Trotter, LB
Left as a Free Agent after the 2001 season and signed with the Redskins. Played 2 seasons with the Redskins and did not reach the heights he had with the Eagles. Re-signed with the Eagles in 2004 and made the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2001. Was released after the 2006 season and played part of one season with Tampa Bay before retiring.
Hugh Douglas, DE
Left after the 2002 season via free agency. Started all 16 games for Jacksonville in 2003, but did not match his 2002 performance. Went from 51 tackles (44 solo) to 26 tackles (21 solo) and from 12.5 sacks to 3.5. Released by Jacksonville after 2003 and re-signed with the Eagles for the 2004 season before retiring.
Duce Staley, RB
Left after the 2003 season. Played a total of 16 games over the following 3 seasons due to injury and then retired. Best season was 2004, where he had 830 yards in 10 games, but played only 5 games in 2005 (148 yards) and 1 game in 2006 (0 yards)
Bobby Taylor, CB
Left after the 2003 season. Played 1 season with the Seattle Seahawks before retiring, playing in only 9 games with no starts and no interceptions in his final season in 2004.
Troy Vincent, CB
Left after the 2003 season and signed as a Free Agent with the Buffalo Bills. Played 4 additional seasons. Best remaining season was in 2005 after being switched to Safety, where he started all 16 games and had 4 interceptions. Injuries in 2004 and 2006 left him playing a total of 16 games in those 3 seasons. Did not make another Pro Bowl after leaving the Eagles (after having made the Pro Bowl each season from 1999-2003)
Derrick Burgess, DE
One of the few mistakes. Burgess was allowed to leave after the 2004 season and signed with the Raiders. Had his best season in 2005, leading the NFL with 16 sacks and making his first Pro Bowl. He made the Pro Bowl again in 2006 recording 11 sacks. Injured in 2007 and was involved in an infamous in-game altercation with Warren Sapp. Started 10 games in 2008. Has recently been mentioned as being on the trading block, with the Eagles as a possible destination.
Jermaine Mayberry, G/T
Signed with New Orleans after the 2004 season. Played one additional season, starting 8 games, before retiring with an injury in 2006.
Freddie Mitchell, WR
Allowed to leave after the 2004 season. Don’t think I really need to talk about how his career went after that.
Ike Reese, LB
Signed with Atlanta after the 2004 season. Played two additional seasons in a part-time role before retiring. Had more tackles in 2004 (52 (44 solo)) than in 2005 and 2006 combined (44 (37 solo)).
Corey Simon, DT
Was originally given the franchise tag after the 2004 season but was released and signed with the Colts. Started 13 games in 2005, then missed the 2006 season due to injury and was released by the Colts. Signed with the Titans in 2007 before retiring mid-season due to injury.
Hank Fraley, C/G
Traded to Cleveland after Jamaal Jackson won the starting C job in the 2006 pre-season. Was called Cleveland’s offensive MVP by some in 2006. Has started every game since at Center for Cleveland.
Hollis Thomas, DT
Signed with the Saints after the 2006 season. Started well in 2006 but was suspended the final four games of the season after a positive steroid test. Played well in 2007 before an injury in 2008. Was recently let go by the Saints.
Michael Lewis, S
Was let go after the 2006 season after losing his starting job to Sean Considine and signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Hs started all 32 games for the 49ers since, but with only 2 INTs (none in 2008).
Jevon Kearse, DE
Was released after the 2007 season. Started all 16 games in 2008 (after not doing so in any of his 4 years in Philadelphia). Finished with only 34 tackles (less than in either of his two seasons where he played at least 14 games with the Eagles, 2004 and 2005), and finished with only 3.5 sacks (after having at least 3.5 sacks in each year with the Eagles, including the 2006 season where he played only 2 games)
--------
Looking at the above, the only glaring "mistake" was in Derrick Burgess. For the rest, either the player did not perform after leaving the Eagles (Trotter, Douglas, Staley, Taylor, Mayberry, Reese, Mitchell, Simon) or was replaced by somebody better (see below).
As for players being replaced by better players, we've got that as well. If we don't let Michael Lewis go, we don't have Demps starting at safety right now. If we don't let Fraley go we don't have Jammal Jackson starting at center. Troy Vincent's departure led to Sheldon Brown and Lito solidifying themselves as our CB pairing. Staley's departure led to Westbrook solidyfying himself as the #1 RB. Kearse's departure has really allowed Trent Cole to shine. In 5 years, don't be surprised to see what the departures this offseason has allowed this team to do.
If you give some of these players contracts based on sentimentality, you lose a lot. Just look at the Patriots. They've been far more ruthless than the Eagles in ridding themselves of veterans -- and have been more successful for it.

100% agreed except for one aspect of the Patriots comparison
The Patriots have done quite well by keeping aging veterans on the team such as Teddy Bruschi, Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison, and Kevin Faulk. There can be exceptions to the “age” rule, even though the philosophy plays true most of the time. Those guys are good role models even though they have lost a step and are placed in situations where they can be successful.
Also, in the defense of the Birds for Derrick Burgess, he was not aging like the rest of this lot. He had just never stayed healthy. Similar to Charlie Garner. Go figure, he never gets injured again after leaving.

check his blog, he asked to be let go!

Yeah the burgess one was a mistake
but that was a tough call. for being so injured and the deal he got at the time was insane. I would not mind him back in place of juqua parker (who could easily get a job elsewhere)
about the age thing… we covet speed in our system and I think that’s a large reason why we don’t allow vets to over warm their welcome.

Good point
You are right. Speed is not part of the Patriots game and that is how they do a better job with aging vets. Those vets just happen to fit well into their system.
Why isn’t Reno Mahe or Todd Pinkston on this list? Damn it! (Sarcasm)

Don’t forget that Burgess’ totals have decreased every year. He was great in 2005 and very good in 2006 but nothing special since.

agreed, Burgess was injured regularly while here. They knew he was gonna be good,
but Oakland gave him a huge contract. I can’t fault them on that.

dont know if letting go of michael lewis
led the eagles to getting demps. I think they had not let lewis go they would have never got Quintin Mikell.

Meh
Michael Lewis was drafted by the Eagles in 02 and played until 06, Q was signed in 03, we had him regardless of what we did with Lewis.

he was one of our leading special team players while lewis was here, so i think he would have continued to make it

Lewis had way subpar caverage skills and Mikell hits equally as hard as Lewis

meh
Lewis was good but he’s not leaps and bounds better than Mikell. In fact Mikell had better numbers last year than Lewis. 3 INTs to Lewis’s 0 2FF to Lewis’s 1.
Michael Lewis is/was a tackle machine but was horrible in coverage. Quintin Mikell can do both and that is what makes him the better safety.

how many probowls did lewis make? exactly he was a stud. .. the problem was that we had dawkins .. and neither one was great in coverage .. if lewis was here he could have replaced dawk .. its like roy williams .. hes agood saftey .. he just needs to play with a cover guy .. if hes with hamlin he sucks .. but with woodson hes a star .. safteys are tandems .. and mikkell was only good cuz of dawk .. i think sean jones will out shine mikkell this year .. and demps will steal some of his reps

lol Michael Lewis made 1 pro bowl in 2004 it wasn’t even his best year but the Eagles were amazing and Dawkins and Lito made it that year too.

I can’t take you seriously until you spell his name correctly.
Pro Bowl is a joke it’s a popularity contest and let’s face it Q isn’t a very popular player.
Michael Lewis = 1 All-Pro in 2004
Quintin Mikell = 1 All-Pro in 2008
This would leave us to believe that right now in 2009 Quintin Mikell > Michael Lewis.

jim johnson made lewis into a stud .. he made mikell decent .. but lewis was a better tackler .. and a pro bowl is a pro bowl .. its on rep .. people knew peters was good and you all ripped him for giving up X amount of sacks .. and then we get him and we all love him .. thats wha pisses me off .. i wanted peters .. i was the one saying peters is better than boldin to go and get

nice run down
looking over the list, it is a lot of names that you wouldnt expect to say yeah it was good they cut that guy but as you note, none but Burgess and maybe Fraley (I dont know about either of these two, just taking the above as correct) none of these guys did very well afterwards.
I remember after Staley, Taylor and Vincent left I was like, well they got to the NFC champinoship, but now that is over, they are going to have to go through some tough times, of course I was way off

great post...
They make us scratch our heads from time to time, but in the end the front office knows its business. I also agree with Dawk about Burgess, because I don’t think he ever played a full season in Philly, and Oakland gave him an enormous contract (at the time).
A couple guys I would add to that list would be Brian Mitchell and Carlos Emmons. Mitchell was on the back nine by the time he got to Philly, but he was still fairly productive and remarkably consistent. He went to the Giants and did virtually nothing. Emmons was a guy I was sad to see go because he was one of the best LBs I’ve ever seen vs the tight end. But the Birds were correct once again with him, as he proved to be a product of a great defensive scheme that maximized his abilities.

and Shawn Barber… Barber got signed a huge deal after leaving but he never lived up to the deal..

Don't forget Al Harris
who, after being traded by the Eagles, wound up making the Pro Bowl. Not that I don’t think the Eagles are great at foretelling players on the decline, but this was – along with Burgess – a mistake. Burgess had a monster post-season for us his last year, but I understand, because of his injury history, why they wouldn’t pay the money to keep him.

That wasn't a mistake
Harris wanted to be a starter, deserved to be a starter, but Brown and Sheppard weren’t going anywhere. He would have walked as a free agent anyway. At least they got something out of the trade.

Trent Cole has been a starter since the back end of Kearse’s second season in Philly.

Blame the Fans
They get attached to declining veterans, when they should be getting excited about a rookie’s potential.
