Is the UFL the future NFL developmental league?
I have to admit, I am really intruiged by the concept of the UFL. It is pioneered by ex NFL executives. It already has major NFL ex coaches: Dennis Green, Jim Haslet, Jim Fassel.
The concept behind the league is awsome. It will play its game during fall, simultaneous to the NFL season, it will feature undrated guys, and it will try to lure players from the NFL who don't want to ride the pine. It give the the opportunity to showcase their skills and try to move up the NFL roster depth chart.
If they can maintain a strong level of competition, it will be respected and viewed. Lets look at what when wrong with other former Leagues.
#1 XFL - This league was a joke from day one, that whole WWE approuch did not translate well to a good league. The level of competition was poor and the games were played in the spring
#2 AFL- Scoring is way tooo high, it like watching a basket ball game. Very little defensive matchups and strategy is not showcased like the NFL. I will never watch an AFL game, because its hard to root for a TD when you have like 9 in a game.
#3 World League, NFL Europa - Never televised consistantly, decent level of competition, but did not receive support overseas. I actually liked this league and don't understand why it failed. We were never able to follow the teams too well, and games were broadcasted in the spring. Another No No.
This league has an interesting concept, teams will actually honor unofficially the NFL. Teams can only use players from designated NFL divisions. Example, if you want to sign a player from the NFL, a team like Orlando will have to select players from the NFC south.
Will NFL players jump ship? If so, who? I can imagine Kolb may want to sign with a team in this league. Gives him a chance to prove that he should start.
Will the NFL adopt this league as an official developmental league? I hope so.
The most important question, do you want a Philadelphia franchise?
Will you watch and support this league?

I think it’s a great idea.
It’s like having a practice squad I can follow.
And I get to watch more players I loved that wouldn’t normally make it to the NFL.
And some great talents might develop out of it.

I dont know
It would be like watching a preseason game. Your watching it, but your not really into it like a regular season game. I mean your happy to see your team playing, but your not going to go ape shit when they score a touchdown. You get what im saying?

All over again. There gonna have He HATE ME part2
"If I can't practice, I can't practice. It is as simple as that. It ain't about that at all. It's easy to sum it up if you're just talking about practice. We're sitting here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we're talking about practice".

football is football…give more guys the shot to make a name for theirselves. i like the idea, can never have too much football. just imagine the guys that werent drafted having a shot to show their talents. Guys in late draft rounds become stars even the undrafted ones. This is like another chance
i think im just spitting thoughts out so ill stop haha

and to reiterate my
if your not good enough to make in the nfl goodbyei never said there isnt unsung talent … im just saying that this unsung talents are going to be surrounded by scrubs … who wants to watch that ? and chances are a few players a year could develop but i dont wanna watch that … unless this league allows steroids , i just cant see any interest (check my sig for daniel toshs beliefs that i share) ….
the only i can see myself watching this is if this league takes place during the off season …

This would be the unsung talents time to shine, if they are surrounded by bums they should stand out more. If you have guy who has Bwest talent he should have crazy numbers in the D league, and should get a shot at playing with the Big Boys.

The initial problem is going to be money
Players are not going to jump ship just for PT. Most NFL pine riders are still going to make a lot more than the stars in a developmental league.
I believe that, if done correctly, a farm system can be beneficial for the NFL. But, it will need to be like the other sports do. I went to many a Phantoms game and had a blast. Why… because I am a Flyers fan. If the NFL did something like expand its practice squad (and perhaps allowed certain position backups to play, like QB), and had Friday or Saturday games between the farm teams (at a much reduced ticket price of course), I would definitely show up to watch Kolb to Gibson or Joe Mays get 15 tackles.

I hope the NFL adopts this league.

would this work like minor league teams in baseball? For example if Kolb signed with one of these teams would he still be under contract with the eagles? If McNabb got injured would Kolb be “called up?” Would the UFL teams act as farm teams to NFL teams or would they be separate?
by phllyfan22 on May 14, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
right now this is an independant league, they honor NFL rules though.
I think you have to find a way not to penalize the player for jumping ship. Maybe an agreement between the two leagues that once a player is needed, he can be resigned by his origional team. Example, Graham Harrell, he can play with guys like Brandon Gibson, but if the Eagles need Gibson, he can only sign with the Eagles, and no other teams. And Since Harrell is a FA, he can sign with any team. Keeps the players ready. World league players played during a different time in season, and played far away.

There are former NFL coaches but there are only 4 teams signed for the 2009 season. How can this league function with only 4 teams and no money??? It will be played during the NFL’s regular season on Thursdays and Fridays in 7 different cities. They are trying to market this league as an alternate to the NFL in smaller markets such as Hartford and Las Vegas but the teams are from New York and Los Angeles. It is a great concept but lacks any real substance.
